Two days ago, our colleague Jon Teitel made his first bracket projection of the season – you can click HERE to view his picks. This bracket is his best guess as to what the selection committee would decide as of this current checkpoint.

For this article, John Stalica will making his own bracket projection (aka the Hoops HD Staff Bracket) as he fills in for David Griggs this week. Here is the bracket below: (through games played on 1/1/18)

NOTES FROM JOHN

– This is a rare year where no team in Division I play enters the new calendar year undefeated. The last three teams (Villanova, TCU and Arizona State) all lost tough road games in conference play.

– One of the biggest movers in recent weeks has been the Oklahoma Sooners. They already had nice wins at Wichita State and against USC on a “neutral” court in LA, and they were responsible for ending TCU’s perfect start to the season. An argument could be made that they could even be a 1-seed, and they would undoubtedly be if not for their only loss against Arkansas back in the PK-80 in November.

– Exempt tournament season is starting to look anomalous not just for Arizona, but also for Purdue and even SMU as both teams have started to rebound nicely going into conference tournament play. Unfortunately, teams like Northern Iowa and Western Kentucky have fallen off the path in recent weeks and will need to stockpile wins in conference play just to get back into automatic bid status for these brackets.

– As of this checkpoint, I believe that teams like Nevada and New Mexico State are good enough to be in the NCAA Tournament even without benefit of an automatic bid. Saint Mary’s is back in my field above the First Four for now, mainly because they a) got a much needed win at BYU and b) other teams around the bubble have not stood head and shoulders above the Gaels.

– St. John’s has stumbled to open the Big East, but it should be noted that they are currently without two of their best players in Shamorie Ponds and Marcus Lovett. The Johnnies were NCAA Tournament-caliber with them in the lineup, but you cannot convince me that they are without those 2 guys playing.

First 4 teams out: Boston College, Washington, Notre Dame, Providence

Others considered: Marquette, Baylor, Maryland, Central Florida

COMMENTS FROM DAVID

-I’d like to thank John for stepping up and doing this bracket.  I was busy sorting out my bail and didn’t have time to do it today.

-The first thing I’d like to say is that the #10 seeds in the East and West Regions should absolutely be switched.  For that matter, the #7s in the Midwest and South should also be flopped.

-I’m a little shocked that Stalica doesn’t like Auburn a little more than he does.  They only have one loss, and although nothing is hugely impressive, they do have enough decent stuff on there to where I think it adds up to them being better than a #12.  It will be interesting to see what they do as they begin conference play.

-I agree with him on Oklahoma.  They’re not on the #1 line now, but they’re starting to put together the type of resume that a #1 seed would have.  They’ve already got the true win against a potential protected seed with their win at TCU, and although they didn’t blow out the Horned Frogs, they didn’t really sweat them out either.  They may be the best team that I’ve seen out of the Big 12 so far.

-I’ve liked this Arkansas team all year long, but WOW!!!  The #3 line??  I guess Stalica likes them even more than I do.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Tuesday, Jan 2nd

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-BUTLER AT XAVIER (Big East).  Both teams are off to 2-0 starts and Butler is coming off a stunning win against top ranked Villanova at home.  This game is on the road, though, so as great as the Nova win was, this one would be infinitely better.  Xavier has had to come from behind in a few games, including their last game against DePaul, but they’ve been good enough to overcome big second half deficits on two occasions.  I think they have a shot at a #1 seed, but they can’t keep falling behind like that because against a team like Butler it will be a lot harder to catch back up.

-TCU AT BAYLOR (Big 12).  TCU is coming off a home loss to a very good Oklahoma team, and although Baylor has been somewhat disappointing, this is still the first big road test for TCU, and it comes against a Baylor team that’s really needing a win.

-MICHIGAN AT IOWA (Big Ten).   I had picked on Iowa quite a bit early in the season, and while they’re still not good, they’re not nearly as bad as they were back in November.  Michigan should win, but they won’t be able to just skate through it.

-PENN STATE AT MARYLAND (Big Ten).  Both teams have shown promise, but both still have a lot of work to do and could really use this game today.

-ALABAMA AT VANDERBILT (SEC).  Alabama is coming off a very impressive blowout win against Texas A&M, and can add a conference road win to their resume today against a Vanderbilt team that has struggled.

-EASTERN MICHIGAN AT BALL STATE (MAC).  Ball State is off to a great start and are red hot right now.  The chances of them landing inside the bubble are small, but not impossible.  If they can blow through MAC play then they should be there in the end.

-DELAWARE AT CHARLESTON.  If CofC can win out, which they are good enough to do, then they should be at least on the bubble come March.

-TEXAS TECH AT KANSAS (Big 12).  Texas Tech has been one of the bigger surprise teams of the season so far, but this is by far their toughest test up to this point.  If they win this one then they’ll be on pace to end up as a protected seed.

-FLORIDA AT TEXAS A&M (SEC).  TAMU is trying to rebound from a blowout loss, and Florida is still looking to find themselves.  During the PK-80 they appeared to be solid, but haven’t looked nearly as strong since then.

-ARKANSAS AT MISSISSIPPI STATE.  The Razorbacks are off to a great start.  Mississippi State comes in at 12-1, but their wins have been mostly buy games.  This is definitely a winnable road game for the Razorbacks.

-PITTSBURGH AT LOUISVILLE (ACC).  The Cardinals are coming off a blowout loss to rival Kentucky and have done very little to demonstrate that they are a tournament caliber team.  If they end up losing this one at home then they will have demonstrated that they are NOT a tournament team.

-NEBRASKA AT NORTHWESTERN (Big Ten).  Both these teams are on the outside looking in and the loser of this game will be even further outside.

-GEORGETOWN AT DEPAUL (Big East).  Georgetown still hasn’t won a game that’s worth mentioning yet.  They probably need to finish at least four games over .500 in Big East play to be considered for the NCAAs considering how weak their OOC schedule was.  That means needing to go 11-5 the rest of the way.

-SAN DIEGO STATE AT COLORADO STATE (Mountain West).  This is a road game that San Diego State simply must have.

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Vermont at Harvard

Vermont at Harvard, 7:00 PM Eastern, NESN+/ivyleaguenetwork.com

There are still a small handful of conferences that have not yet tipped off conference play, and the preseason favorites from two such leagues are meeting tonight in our Under the Radar Game of the Day.  Vermont, the early pick to win the America East, will be travelling to Cambridge to take on a Harvard team that has been somewhat disappointing in non-conference play, but is almost ready to clear the slate and begin anew with league play.  Vermont enters tonight’s game at 8-5 on the season.  The Catamounts’ losses include Kentucky, Marquette, St. Bonaventure and a very good Bucknell team.  The only somewhat surprising loss was a game at Northeastern, though star point guard Trae Bell-Haynes missed that game due to injury.  Injuries could be a major factor tonight as well, unfortunately, as sophomore forward Anthony Lamb, who has been in double digits in scoring 11 times already this year, is out with a fractured foot that will cost him at least eight weeks, and potentially the rest of the season.  Vermont will need to find a way to win without Lamb, and tonight’s contest at Harvard is their lone chance to do so before conference play starts on Thursday night.

Harvard enters tonight’s game at 5-8, including having suffered disappointing losses to Holy Cross, Manhattan and Cal State-Fullerton.  The Crimson are coming off an 11 point loss on Saturday at Minnesota, and need to find a way to start winning games with their first conference matchup coming this weekend.  As with Vermont, Harvard is dealing with an injury — to point guard Bryce Aiken.  Aiken has been key to the success they have had, including an impressive 21 point and 8 assist effort in a win over St. Joseph’s.  If he can get healthy and back on the court, the Crimson will be in a much better position to not only win tonight’s game, but to be successful once league play begins.

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Southern at Texas Southern

Southern at Texas Southern, 9:00 PM Eastern, ESPNU

On Tuesday, March 7, Texas Southern defeated Alabama State at home in the quarterfinal round of the SWAC Tournament by a score of 87-72, en route to an eventual SWAC Tournament championship and berth in the NCAAs.  That game was also the last game played by the Tigers on their home court, as all 13 games so far this season have come on the road.  In fact, Mike Davis’ team has not played a home non-conference game since November 2014.  This season, the Tigers went 0-13 in their all-buy game slate with all of those losses having come to teams ranked in the top 50% of teams in Division I according to KenPom (and 7 of the 13 coming against the Top 50).  It has been a long time since Tigers fans have been able to come out to cheer on their team, but with 2018 being welcomed in today, so are the Tigers as they host rival Southern University.

Southern enters tonight’s game at 4-9, with all 9 losses having come in their 9 road games.  Jared Sam has been leading the way for the Jaguars so far this season, having scored in double digits 10 times already, including four double-doubles.  He will need to have a big game, especially if Trae Jefferson plays for Texas Southern.  Jefferson has topped 20 points in all but one game he has played so far, but did not play last time out at BYU as he was with his family to deal with the tragic shooting and killing of his father.  Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with Jefferson and the entire Texas Southern family as they deal with this tragedy and get ready for today’s start of SWAC play.
