Under the Radar Game of the Day: East Tennessee State at Mercer

East Tennessee State at Mercer, 2:00 PM Eastern, espn3

It is New Year’s Eve, making today’s Under the Radar Game our final UTR Game of the Day for 2017.  The honor of today’s selection heads to Macon, Georgia as the Mercer Bears play host to the East Tennessee State Buccaneers in the SoCon opener for both teams.  Head coach Bob Hoffman’s Bears enter today’s game at 7-6 on the season, though all of their losses have been respectable (to the likes of UCF, Colorado, Alabama and more).  This has landed them at 89th in the KenPom ratings enter play today, the top such rating among all SoCon teams.  Ria’n Holland has led the way for Mercer, including a pair of games in which he scored more than 30 points.

East Tennessee State enters play today at 9-4, having won 7 of their last 8 games, with the only loss being a near miss at Xavier on December 16.  Desonta Bradford led the way in that game, scoring 20 points and pulling down 10 boards against the Musketeers.  ETSU’s performance has landed them at 92 in the KenPom ratings, making today’s game a matchup of the two highest rated SoCon teams in that metric — both better even than Wofford, the team that won a road game at North Carolina!  With so much depth in this league this season, today’s matchup may not be the conference championship preview, but it would not be a shock to see these teams right there at the top of the conference standings in March.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Saturday, Dec 30th

NEWS AND NOTES

-The featured game of the day yesterday between Louisville and Kentucky ended up being so bad that it may have started to make peoples’ eyeballs bleed.  Kentucky blew it wide open in the second half in what was easily their most impressive showing of the season.

-West Virginia and Kansas both picked up big road wins in their conference openers as West Virginia survived Oklahoma State, and Kansas won at Texas.

-Washington also picked up a really nice road win at USC, and this is not the first really nice win away from home for the Huskies.  They certainly have some warts on their profile, but all and all they’re looking like a potential NCAA team.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-WICHITA STATE AT UCONN (American).  Wichita State, for the most part, has looked like a top ten team this year.  UConn, for the most part, has not even looked like an NIT team this year.

-WAKE FOREST AT NORTH CAROLINA (ACC).  Wake got off to an atrocious start, but they’ve actually won six of their last seven and are looking a little better.  They’re not looking so much better that they’re likely to pick up a win against the Tarheels.  UNC is still reeling somewhat from the surprise loss to Wofford, but they’re still in really good shape and should end up as a protected seed.

-TENNESSEE AT ARKANSAS (SEC).  Tennessee has looked a lot stronger than what we expected this year, but they have a really tough assignment today against an Arkansas team that’s also really good (especially at home) and that a lot of people seemed to have overlooked so far.

-FLORIDA STATE AT DUKE (ACC).  Duke actually lost their ACC opener at Boston College, but is still on pace to end up as a #1 or #2 seed, especially if they can win at home today against a pretty good Florida State team that comes in with just one loss.

-DEPAUL AT XAVIER (Big East).  Xavier is coming off a big road win in their conference opener, and has looked like a top ten team pretty much all year long.  They shouldn’t have any trouble today.

-BOSTON COLLEGE AT VIRGINIA (ACC).  Somehow BC is 10-3 and they already have a big win against Duke.  They’ve still got a lot of work to do, and winning at Virginia, who is deservedly in the top ten, is a VERY tall order, but if they are able to somehow pull it off then we have to start thinking of the Eagles as a tournament team.

-OKLAHOMA AT TCU (Big Twelve).  Both teams are ranked in the top 15, both deserve their ranking, and not many people were expecting much out of either one of when the season started.  This is a fantastic showcase game, and it’s one of the bigger home games for TCU in recent memory.

-GEORGIA TECH AT NOTRE DAME (ACC).  There aren’t many easy games in the ACC, but facing Georgia Tech at home is arguably an easy game.  The Irish could really use it too after some of their recent struggles.

-HARVARD AT MINNESOTA.  Both teams have been somewhat disappointing, especially Harvard, but Harvard could turn it around and be a strong force in the Ivy League, and Minney could end up safely inside the bubble with a strong showing in conference play.

-UMASS AT SAINT BONAVENTURE (Atlantic Ten).  The Bonnies are coming off a huge win against Syracuse and are playing like an NCAA Tournament caliber team.  If they hold serve in conference play, which basically means beating everyone at home and dropping very few on the road to teams other than Rhody, they’ll be breathing easy on Selection Sunday.

-VILLANOVA AT BUTLER (Big East).  This was one of the few games that Nova lost a year ago.  The difference is that this year Nova looks like they’re even better than last year’s team, and Butler isn’t as good.  They did have a nice come from behind win against Georgetown, so they’ll have some momentum coming into this one, but it’s still a very tall order.

-MIAMI FL AT PITTSBURGH (ACC).  Miami is off to a great start and has a winnable road game today in their conference opener.

-NC STATE AT CLEMSON (ACC).  NC State has a solid 10-3 record, but doesn’t have a win as good as this one would be on their resume.  Clemson is off to a fantastic 11-1 start.  It’s not the first time they’ve looked really strong out of conference and then struggled in league play, though.  So this is an important game if for no other reason than they need to win all their winnable games.

-SAINT MARY’S AT BYU (West Coast).  This is a hugely important game for Saint Mary’s because their OOC schedule was so weak that they have limited chances at big wins.  This is one of those limited chances.  It’s also a big game for a BYU team that’s off to an impressive 11-2 start and is looking to play their way into the NCAA Tournament.

-VANDERBILT AT FLORIDA (SEC).  Florida has stumbled a little bit after a very strong start to the season, but should be able to win this one at home and get back on track.

-EVANSVILLE AT LOYOLA CHICAGO (Missouri Valley).  Loyola has one really nice win at Florida, but is coming off of back to back losses and really can’t afford to lose this one at home to an Evansville team that’s also pretty good.

-DAYTON AT DUQUESNE (Atlantic Ten).  I know it isn’t likely.  In fact I know it’s virtually impossible.  But, it isn’t ENTIRELY impossible that Duquesne is good and can make a run at the bubble.  They come into this game at 9-4 and if they’re somehow able to finish at or near the top of the standings they may find themselves in the discussion.

-GEORGE MASON AT RHODE ISLAND (Atlantic Ten).  Rhody will be in good shape so long as they hold serve throughout conference play, which means winning games like this.

-TOWSON AT CHARLESTON (Colonial).  These are the two best teams in the Colonial, and if either one of them wants any chance at all of landing inside the bubble then they need to blow through this conference and win against each other.

-GEORGETOWN AT MARQUETTE (Big East).  Georegetown blew through a weak schedule, and also blew it against the only two good teams they’ve played after they built up comfortable second half leads against Butler and Syracuse, but couldn’t hold on.  Both are coming off of losses in their conference openers, so this game has a pivotal feel to it.

-NEW MEXICO AT NEVADA (Mountain West).  Nevada had a really nice win at Fresno State the other night and shouldn’t have too much trouble beating a struggling New Mexico team today.

-MIDDLE TENNESSEE AT UAB (Conference USA).  Middle Tennessee is coming off of close back to back losses in the Diamond Head Classic, which denied them the chance to pick up a notable win for their resume, but they still look like one of the best teams in conference and could end up inside the bubble if they run the table or come close to it, which they appear to be good enough to do.

-TEXAS A&M AT ALABAMA (SEC).  Texas A&M could end up with a #1 seed if they’re able to dominate in conference play.  Alabama appears to have a solid tournament caliber team, and they’re at home, so this is not an easy assignment for TAMU.  It’s also a huge opportunity for Alabama to pick up a big win against a highly ranked team and build some momentum for themselves.

-TEMPLE AT HOUSTON (American).  Both teams have looked good at times, but both still have a lot of work to do and this is a big game for both teams for that reason.

-SANTA CLARA AT GONZAGA (West Coast).  The only reason this isn’t with the buy games is because it is a conference game.

-AIR FORCE AT FRESNO STATE (Mountain West).  Fresno needs to rebound after being dominated at home by Nevada.  They can still play their way into the discussion, and perhaps even into the field, with a strong showing in conference.  That would mean taking care of business in games like this where they’re at home against a non-tournament team.

-CHARLOTTE AT OLD DOMINION (Conference USA).  With just three losses and a few decent wins, Old Dominion could play their way onto, or even inside of, the bubble, but they’d need to win out or at least come close in order to do it.

-LOUISIANA TECH AT MARSHALL (Conference USA).  I’m not expecting either team to be in the NCAA Tournament picture come March, but both enter this game with nine wins so we’ll go ahead and highlight it and keep our eyes on both of them until we have a reason not to.

-LIPSCOMB AT PURDUE.  This is a buy game, but we’ll go ahead and highlight it because Lipscomb looks to be the the frontrunner in the Atlantic Sun this year, and this is a nice litmus test for them.

-ARIZONA STATE AT ARIZONA (Pac Twelve).  This is a huge rivalry game between two ranked teams, one of which is unbeaten and looking like a #1 seed (Arizona State) and another that is unbeaten and has looked fairly strong outside of a really poor showing at the Battle 4 Atlantis.  This one will be intense and it will be fun.

-UTAH STATE AT SAN DIEGO STATE (Mountain West).  San Diego State has been schizophrenic this season, and really can’t afford to lose this game.

-BOISE STATE AT UNLV (Mountain West).  Both teams have looked really strong this year, both look like they could end up in the NCAA Tournament, and both need quality wins between now and the end in order to get there, so this is definitely one to circle, even if it’s a really late tip for those of us in the east.

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Dartmouth at New Hampshire

Dartmouth at New Hampshire, 7:00 PM Eastern, americaeast.tv

Conference play is starting to kick into gear, but tonight we are taking a step out away from it for the Battle of the Granite State as the Dartmouth Big Green travel across state to take on the UNH Wildcats.  The host New Hampshire Wildcats enter the game at only 3-10 on the season, with only one of those wins having come against D1 competition.  The good news for UNH is that after tonight’s game America East conference play will begin and they will essentially be able to hit the reset button on their season.

The visiting Big Green enter at 4-6 on the year.  Ivy League play will start for Dartmouth next week with a game at Harvard, though they will step oft of conference after that for two more games (vs Vermont and at Boston College).  Last season, Dartmouth won this rivalry game to cut UNH’s all-time lead to 34-30.  The game was won thanks to a three pointer by Brendan Berry with 3 seconds left.  The Wildcats responded with what for a moment looked like a buzzer beater of their own, but Jaleen Smith was ruled not to have gotten the shot off in time, and Dartmouth escaped.  Although neither of these teams have impressive records or notable wins on the season to date, none of that matters in a rivalry game, and this should definitely be a fun one in the Granite State tonight.

NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day, which highlights the start of play in the NEC – CLICK HERE

-Another exciting game in the Big East as Seton Hall came from behind to get the win at home against Creighton.

-It was a rough night for two UTR teams that we were just praising 24 hours earlier as possible/likely at-large candidates.  Northern Iowa, almost inexplicably lost at home to Southern Illinois.  There are some really good teams in the Missouri Valley.  We didn’t think Southern Illinois was one of them, and we certainly weren’t expecting them to win AT Northern Iowa.  Stephen F Austin also lost in a shocker at SELA, who is a sub 200 team.  This REALLY damages UNI’s chances to land inside the bubble if they fail to win the conference tournament, and it pretty much eliminates SFA’s chances entirely.

-The Johnnies, which was another team that we really thought that was good, were blown completely out at home by a Providence team that we didn’t think had looked good at all.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-LOUISVILLE AT KENTUCKY.  This game is always intense, and things won’t be any different this year.  Louisville is still looking for their first true road win, and if they’re able to pick it up today not only will they have bragging rights, but their NCAA Tournament profile will be given a huge boost.  Kentucky is coming off a loss to UCLA, and could use some more good wins on their resume because outside of their win against Virginia Tech they haven’t done much.  Both teams have a lot of potential, but both also have a lot of work to do.

-WEST VIRGINIA VS OKLAHOMA STATE (Big Twelve).  It’s the conference opener for both teams, and like virtually every Big Twelve game, it should be a good one.  West Virginia is ranked in the top ten and this would be a solid road win for them.  Oklahoma State is a team that we thought would be rebuilding, but they come into this at 10-2 and can keep that momentum going if they can somehow pull off this win.

-BAYLOR AT TEXAS TECH (Big Twelve).  Texas Tech has been a surprise team in the OOC portion of the season, and have actually played their way into the rankings with just one loss.  Baylor has looked really strong as well.  It’s two ranked teams that are looking for a quality win, and who also have a lot of tough games ahead of them.

-LOUISIANA AT LITTLE ROCK (Sun Belt).  Louisiana’s margin for error is small, but if they can blow through the Sun Belt they should be in the discussion for a bid.

-KANSAS AT TEXAS (Big Twelve).  This one should be fun.  Texas has looked really good this year, but doesn’t have a win this big on their resume just yet.  Kansas has looked good as well, but has also looked vulnerable, especially in true road games.

-KANSAS STATE AT IOWA STATE (Big Twelve).  K State has a bloated record, but not much in the way of big wins.  That can change if they can pull this one off tonight against an Iowa State team that’s lost just two games and looked a lot better than what we expected coming into the year.

-UTAH AT OREGON (Pac Twelve).  Both teams have looked good at times, but both also have a lot of work to do, which gives this game a bit of a pivotal feel.

-WASHINGTON AT USC (Pac Twelve).  It’s been a rough year for USC, and things probably won’t be getting any smoother any time soon despite the fact that they just won the Diamond Head Classic.  Washington has been somewhat inconsistent this year, but they do have a big win against Kansas in Kansas City and can play their way into the field with a strong showing in conference.

-COLORADO AT OREGON STATE (Pac Twelve).  Both teams need to improve and get hot in conference play if they want to be relevant in March.

-WASHINGTON STATE AT UCLA (Pac Twelve).  Both teams need to improve and get hot in conference play if they want to be relevant in March.  Both have some decent OOC wins, and UCLA picked up a really nice win in their last game against Kentucky, but they’re hardly to a point to where they can just start skating.

Under the Radar Game of the Day: St. Francis (PA) at Central Connecticut

St. Francis (PA) at Central Connecticut, 7:30 PM Eastern, necfrontrow.com

With the start of conference play this week, we are also seeing the start of very meaningful games in one of our favorite conferences here at HoopsHD, the Northeast Conference.  Today is Day One of NEC play as the ten members of the conference fight to qualify for the 8 team conference tournament and secure home court advantage once there.  Our Game of the Day heads to New Britain, Connecticut as the Central Connecticut Blue Devils play host to preseason favorite St. Francis (PA).  The Blue Devils enter play this afternoon at 7-6, which is notable in itself as the program had not won more than 6 games in a single season since 2013-14.  They are led by senior Mustafa Jones, who has scored 24 last time out in a win over Mass-Lowell.  Also keep an eye on Tyler Kohl who had a double-double in last week’s win over Maine.

The Red Flash of St. Francis University enter play today at only 6-5, though they have won three straight since getting blown out at Duke by 57 points on December 5.  Keith Braxton has been a double-double machine, with six of them so far this season.  Last game out, in a 84-70 win over Lehigh, he had an incredible game with 20 points, 16 rebounds and 8 assists.  Efforts like that today and throughout the conference season could put the Red Flash in line for their first regular season title and NCAA Tournament bid since 1991.

NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Big East play got underway with Butler and Georgetown going into double overtime before Butler won in the final couple of seconds.  Xavier and Marquette seesawed back and forth as well, but Marquette was unable to hold on to pull the upset.

-San Diego State fell on the road rather convincingly at Wyoming.  SDSU just can’t seem to play well with any sort of consistency.  That’s better than being consistently bad, but still.  They don’t have the biggest margin for error in the world and they won’t end up on the right side of the bubble if they keep dropping these kinds of games.

-Nevada picked up another impressive win with their win against Fresno State.  It wasn’t just that they won the game, but that they led a really good team on the road by a comfortable margin for the entire game.  The Wolfpack are looking like the class of the Mountain West again this year.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-CREIGHTON AT SETON HALL.  Both teams seem to be headed toward the top half of the bracket and are expected to be wearing white in the Round of 64.  This is a chance for both to start off conference play with a big win that will look good on the resume.

-TULANE AT TEMPLE (American).  Tulane is a much improved team and it will be interesting to see what they can do in conference play.  They start with a tough road test against a Temple team that has looked good at times, but still has some work to do.

-HOUSTON AT SOUTH FLORIDA (American).  Houston has a bloated record, but they need a strong showing in conference with some solid wins to go along with it in order to land on the right side of the bubble.  They definitely need to be able to hold serve in games like this.

-PROVIDENCE AT SAINT JOHN’S (Big East).  The Johnnies have been really impressive this year and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them make quite a bit of noise in Big East play and end up dancing in March.

-STEPHEN F AUSTIN AT SELA (Southland).  I think if SFA runs the table in league play then they will make the NCAA Tournament even if they end up losing in the conference tournament.  That’s the story for the rest of the year.  Can they win out?

-SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AT NORTHERN IOWA.  UNI has had a rough week, but of their four losses three of them are to top ten teams, so their resume is still pretty strong.  If they finish at the top  of the MVC I think they’ll be inside the bubble regardless of what happens in the conference tournament.

-PACIFIC AT GONZAGA (West Coast).  The Zags need to dominate this league if they want to end up on the top half of the bracket, which they are certainly good enough to do.

-PORTLAND AT BYU (West Coast).  BYU has just two losses and some fairly decent wins on their resume.  A strong showing in conference should land them inside the bubble, but their margin for error is rather small despite the bloated record.

-LSU AT MEMPHIS.  Neither team has looked super strong this season, but both come into this game with just three losses and the longer they keep it up the more realistic it is to think that they can make the field.  This is a big game for both teams tonight.

-NEW MEXICO STATE AT UC IRVINE. New Mexico is on a path to land inside the bubble, but they’ll need to win out or come close to it in order for that to happen.  They are in the midst of starting a four game stretch of true road games, and are in the middle of an eight game stretch of games away from home.  If they get through this they should be in good shape.

-LMU AT SAINT MARY’S (West Coast).  SMC has almost no margin for error because they’ve done very little, and outside of Gonzaga and BYU they won’t have any more chances to put good wins in their resume.
