Under the Radar Game of the Day: Morgan State vs Grand Canyon

Morgan State vs Grand Canyon, 9:00 PM Eastern, YUR-Arizona/gcu.tv/espn3

The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada is the site of tonight’s Under the Radar Game of the Day, as the Morgan State Bears will be taking on the Grand Canyon Antelopes in what may be a lot more exciting of a game than the team’s actual records indicate.  Thunder Dan’s Lopes enter tonight’s game at 9-4 overall, ranked 128 in the nation by KenPom, good for second best in the WAC behind New Mexico State.  Although they have yet too pick up a notable win on the season, their losses are respectable, including at Louisville and in double overtime at Boise State.  Josh Braun was held to only 8 points in the Louisville loss and needs to contribute more tonight to help lead his team.

The Lopes need to be certain not to look past tonight’s game to a matchup this weekend at Illinois, because head coach Todd Bozeman’s Morgan State Bears are a lot more dangerous than their 4-7 record and 272 KenPom rating indicate.  This is because the first 10 of their 11 games were played without the services of senior swingman Tiwian Kendley.  Kendley made his season debut last time out, in a loss at George Mason, and promptly scored 31 points in an 8 point loss.  With Kendley back in the fold, the Bears are primed to make some serious noise in the MEAC this year, and his presence should have GCU fans on upset alert in tonight’s game.

The Hoops HD Report: Tuesday, December 26

While the past week in college hoops was relatively light due to the holiday break, there were a few surprises along the way. North Carolina had a surprising loss at home to Wofford, and the panel discusses this game and what UNC’s prospects will look like going into ACC play.

Our panel previews all 6 major conferences along with the American, Atlantic 10, Mountain West and West Coast Conferences. This week, host Chad Sherwood is joined by David Griggs, Jon Teitel and John Stalica to discuss who they think look like the favorites to win each conference based on how nonconference play has gone so far.

Other notable teams include the USC Trojans – they won the Diamond Head Classic with wins over Akron, Middle Tennessee and a New Mexico State team that defeated previously undefeated Miami Hurricanes in the semifinal round. UCLA was another team that got a much-needed win against Kentucky in the CBS Sports Classic in New Orleans over the weekend.

And without further ado, here is the video podcast:

Bracket Projection: Tuesday, December 26th

With the holiday break set to conclude for many NCAA schools today, it is now John Stalica’s turn this week to submit a staff bracket this week for Hoops HD. This is a checkpoint of games played through the Diamond Head Classic that concluded last night with USC knocking off New Mexico State in the closing seconds. It was an opportunity for USC, for example, to help fortify a profile that had fallen on hard times in recent weeks. For New Mexico State, it gave the Aggies a window to bring their profile close to at-large status. Beating Miami was huge, but they missed an opportunity to add a USC win to a profile that won’t have any more chances at quality wins in the WAC.

A team like North Carolina certainly stubbed its toe a little bit with the Wofford home loss, but they still have a lot of solid wins on their profile (including a win at Tennessee that is looking more and more significant by the day). Oklahoma has also shot up the seed list in recent weeks, and they will have opportunities every single game the rest of the way to look like a protected seed after a one-year hiatus from the NCAA Tournament.

St. Bonaventure got itself a much needed win at Syracuse to give the A-10 a much-needed 2nd team into the NCAA field. The Bonnies’ highlights are wins at Syracuse and against Maryland on a neutral court. While the computers love teams like St. John’s and Missouri so far, I’d love to see how their successes so far will translate in conference play.

And with that in mind, here is the bracket:

Awards season: HoopsHD interviews Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman

In an effort to promote the game of basketball and recognize the best players in the nation, the Basketball Hall of Fame created awards for the men’s All-America Team in 2015. These awards covered 5 different positions and were named after 5 of the best players to ever step onto the court: the Bob Cousy Point Guard Of The Year, the Jerry West Shooting Guard Of The Year, the Julius Erving Small Forward Of The Year, the Karl Malone Power Forward Of The Year, and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Of The Year. In 2017 the Hall of Fame announced a partnership with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to present awards celebrating 5 of the best women to ever play the game: the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Of The Year, the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Of The Year, the Cheryl Miller Small Forward Of The Year, the Katrina McClain Power Forward Of The Year, and the Lisa Leslie Center Of The Year. As we approach the April announcement of this season’s women’s award winners, HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel will present interviews with all 5 Hall of Fame legends:

Miller: posted back in September: https://hoopshd.com/2017/09/03/season-preview-hoopshd-interviews-hall-of-famer-cheryl-miller
Lieberman: see below (youngest basketball player in Olympic history to win a medal, 3-time All-American/2-time national POY at Old Dominion where she won the 1978 Women’s NIT and AIAW titles in 1979/1980 while setting a school-record with 961 AST, 1st female to play in a men’s professional league after signing with the Springfield Fame of the USBL in 1986)
Meyers Drysdale: January
McClain: February
Leslie: March

While attending Far Rockaway High School in New York you earned a spot on the US national team, and in 1976 you became the youngest basketball player in Olympic history to win a medal: what did it mean to you to represent your country, and how unstoppable was 7’2′ Soviet center Juliana Semenova? It was an honor to play for America and 1 of the best things to happen to me during my career. I was just a junior in high school in 1975 when we won a gold medal in the Pan Am Games.  It was pretty exciting at the time and now I can look back at all of the Hall of Famers I played with (Pat Head/Ann Meyers/etc.). Semenova wore a size 18 shoe and was the dominant force in women’s basketball. We had some pretty talented 6’3”/6’4” players (including Rita Easterling/Charlotte Lewis) but she was too big/strong for us: once she carved out space you simply could not move her. The rest of the Russian team was also big and they were a professional team playing against amateurs.

You attended Old Dominion University, where you won the 1978 Women’s National Invitation Tournament and a pair of AIAW national titles in 1979/1980: how was your team able to be so dominant throughout your college career? At that point in my life I had about 100 scholarship offers but I wanted to go to a school that nobody had ever heard of and had not had much prior success. We started to draw some big crowds and make a name for ourselves. Marianne Stanley became our coach when I was a sophomore and she gave us a vision of what it took to win national titles. We started to feel really comfortable and after my sophomore year she told me that if I could make my teammates better by making some sacrifices in my own game we could win a national championship.  We went 37-1 and the light went on for me: this winning thing is a lot of fun! It was really neat to make people better and try to become a good leader.

You were the 1st 2-time winner of the prestigious Wade Trophy as well as a 3-time All-American: what did it mean to you to receive such outstanding honors? Any player worth their salt has a carrot in front of them: winning. I was very interested in doing that but I also wanted to show everyone that I was the best player, which pushed me every day even when I was tired. I was driven to be the best.

You graduated with 2430 PTS/1167 REB and your 961 career AST remains a school record: how were you able to balance your scoring with your rebounding with your passing? My last 2 years I only averaged about 15-18 PPG because I realized there was more to my game than just scoring. If I had not missed a few games with mono I think that I would have ended up with 1000+ career AST. I was a power forward on team USA so I was use to hitting the boards and trying to rebound, which I continued to do even though I was a PG.

You also had 562 career STL, which is believed to be a modern record: what is your secret for playing great defense? I was very aggressive, read the passing angles, and tried to anticipate. Playing defense is about commitment: you need to have multiple actions/efforts and I wanted to be a nightmare for my opponents to play against.

In 1986 you became the 1st-ever female player in a men’s pro basketball league when you signed with the Springfield Fame of the USBL: how big a deal was it at the time, and how did you do against the men? I have played against men my whole life.  As a teenager in New York I would take the train to Rucker Park to play against the best players in Harlem, and they taught me how to compete. I played for Pat Riley in his 1st summer league with the Lakers: people say that Magic was his 1st PG but it was actually me! When Springfield called me I was thrilled to join them. I had some great teammates like Michael Adams (1992 NBA All-Star) who pushed me every single day to be better. I was fearless and a really good athlete: I could dunk a tennis ball at 5’10” and teammates like it when you can pass the rock. After that I played for the Long Island Knights alongside Micheal Ray Richardson (4-time NBA All-Star) and later played for the Utah Jazz summer league team with Karl Malone.

The following year you joined the Washington Generals: what was it like to face the Harlem Globetrotters, and how did it feel to go from winning almost every game in college to losing every game with the Generals? In 1987 I felt that it would allow me to travel around the world and be a good ambassador for the game of basketball…but going 0-200 was not exactly fun! I joked to Tim Cline that if we lost 200 straight games that we should get married: we did, and then we did. We played 47 straight nights and we were all dead tired, but when you walk into an arena and see all these kids cheering it gives you a burst of energy.

In 1996 you were elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame: where does that rank among the highlights of your career? They said they would call me with the announcement by 11AM so I sat by my phone all morning long. It is the elite of the elite saying thank you for everything that you have done. It was breathtaking to be a part of it.

In November of 2009 you became the 1st woman to coach a men’s pro basketball team after you were hired as coach of the Texas Legends in the D-League: why did you take the job, and what is the biggest difference between coaching women vs. coaching men? To know me is to know that I am competitive. The year before that I played in the WNBA after turning 50 years old. I enjoyed doing TV coverage but it is not the same as being in the huddle. Legends co-owner Donnie Nelson said that I checked every box he had for hiring a coach and the most important thing was that I was not afraid. Donnie deserves a lot of credit: he was ahead of everyone else and was so protective of me that it gave me power. I wanted us to win so badly for him: we went to the playoffs as an expansion team and helped Antonio Daniels eventually get to the NBA. Donnie showed everyone that this can be normal.

In July of 2015 you became the 2nd female assistant coach in NBA history after being hired by the Sacramento Kings: how is it going so far, and do you think we will ever see a female head coach in the NBA? I am very humbled and grateful to the Kings for having the vision/strength to be a part of history along with the Spurs. If George Karl did not want this then I would not be here, which is a life-changer for so many people. Everyone applauded George, which made it easier for me to come here and do my job. It is a joy to be in the coaches’ meetings and we are making our fine young men better every day. You cannot win a title until you make the playoffs and you cannot have a female head coach until you have some more female assistants like Becky Hammon/myself. I think it will happen someday but I do not know when. We have a successful track record and are learning from the amazing guys next to us…but we still have a lot to learn.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Saturday, Dec 23rd thru Tuesday, Dec 26th. MERRY HOLIDAYS!!

NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Xavier picked up a REALLY nice road win at Northern Iowa.  I think that Xavier is a better team, but I was actually expecting UNI to win because they were at home, and had the crowd with them, and had the familiarity of the venue with them.  This could very well end up being their only home loss, and if that’s how it plays out then its’ a win that Xavier will get a ton of credit for from the selection committee.

-Georgia had no trouble burying Temple 84-66.  I Georgia is a really hot and cold team, but after that win I’d say they’re hot right now.

-Saint Bonaventure led Syracuse for most of the game, but the Orange were able to force overtime.  Still, the Bonnies pulled it out and picked up a huge win for their resume, and did it against a regional P5 team.  That always has to feel good.

-Rutgers, who we never thought of as being a tournament team but still thought were showing signs of promise, lost at home to Stony Brook yesterday.  I guess they were still partying after beating Seton Hall.  They weren’t the only Big Ten school to choke on their cupcake…

-Penn State, who we have talking about as a possible tournament team, lost at home to Rider yesterday in a game that was truly surprising.

-Towson blew it against Pitt.  Pitt is getting better, but this was really a game Towson could have won and arguably should have won.  The Colonial will get one team in, and it’ll be whoever wins the automatic bid.  Teams need to be able to win on the road against sub-NIT caliber teams if they want to be able to make the NCAAs.

-Texas looked really impressive against Alabama in Birmingham.  It was a good win for their resume, but more importantly they looked like a top 25 caliber team yesterday.

-UNLV and Washington both survived scares from Big Sky teams.  Northern Colorado, who is having a fantastic season by UTR standards, nearly knocked off UNLV, and Montana was right in there with Washington.  It was two of the more exciting games of the day.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES, Saturday, Dec 23rd

-TENNESSEE AT WAKE FOREST.  Tennessee had to sweat out their last game, but they’ve still had a great season so far and have a winnable true road game today against a Wake team that is improving with six straight wins, but that’s still struggling.

-GRAND CANYON AT LOUISVILLE.  It’s a buy game, and it probably won’t be a close game, but since GCU is one of the better teams in the WAC we’ll go ahead and highlight it.

-RICHMOND AT BOSTON COLLEGE.  Richmond is so bad that this will end up looking like a buy game.

-OHIO STATE VS NORTH CAROLINA (CBS Sports Classic, New Orleans).  UNC is coming off a rather surprising loss to Wofford and is looking to rebound.  Their opponent is an Ohio State team that is by no means great, but has gotten noticeably better as the year has gone along and is a potentially dangerous opponent today if UNC overlooks them.  UNC is a likely protected seed, and Ohio State is trying to make the field.  A win today away from home helps both teams causes.

-ILLINOIS STATE AT EVANSVILLE (Missouri Valley).  Evansville was just blasted at Duke, but they weren’t at full strength and they’re still in relatively decent shape if they can finish at or near the top of the MVC.  Winning today is pretty much a must.

-UCONN AT AUBURN.  Auburn has been one of the bigger surprises of the year, and they can continue to build that momentum against a UConn team that has really struggled this season.  The Huskies really need a win like this to get things turned around.

-KENTUCKY VS UCLA (CBS Sports Classic, New Orleans). Kentucky comes into this at 9-1, but still doesn’t have a really solid win that most protected seeded teams will have.  Still, they’ve improved as the year has gone on and are still dangerous.  UCLA is still trying to iron out their issues and could really use a win like this to catapult their resume, so this is a nice opportunity for both teams.

-MIDDLE TENNESSEE VS USC (Diamond Head Classic).  Middle Tennessee barely survived against Princeton yesterday, but it’s a good thing that they did because it places them on the winning side of the bracket and gives them the chance to pick up quality wins away from home.  If they win this game, which they’re certainly capable of doing, and then blow through the conference, which they’re certainly capable of doing, then they should at least end up on the bubble.  If they win this whole tournament then they should end up inside the bubble.  USC needs to win just to get things turned around.  They started off ranked in the top 10, but have barely looked like a top 40 team for most of the season.

-ILLINOIS VS MISSOURI (Saint Louis, MO).  BRAGGIN RIGHTS!!!  This game doesn’t quite have the story line that it typically did about ten years ago, but it is slowly working its way back to relevance.  Missouri looks like a tournament caliber team this year and this would be another win away from home.  Illinois has struggled, but they’re program is rebuilding and you get the sense that it’s going in the right direction.  This would be a feel-good moment for them if they’re able to pull the upset, and those feel-good moments are important to programs that are rebuilding.

-NEW MEXICO STATE VS MIAMI FL (Diamondhead Classic).  New Mexico State is a solid UTR team that could really build up their resume if they’re able to win this tournament.  Like Middle Tennessee, if they beat a ranked team today and then blow through their conference they should end up inside the bubble come Selection Sunday.  That’s easier said than done.  Miami is undefeated and just blew out a pretty good Hawaii team in the middle of the night last night.

-SAN FRANCISCO VS NEVADA (Last Vegas Classic).  Nevada is off to a great start and shouldn’t have too much trouble improving to 12-2 and picking up another win away from home.

MONDAY, DECEMBER 25TH

-MERRY CHRISTMAS!!  We will have the final round of the Diamond Head Classic today.  The winner’s side of hte bracket has shaped up to be pretty good, and the third place games and championship games should be worth watching.  It will be some combination of New Mexico State v Miami FL and Middle Tennessee vs USC with the winners and losers playing each other.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 26th

-No games scheduled

As we do every year, we will be going into holiday mode for the next couple of days.  Christmas falls on a Monday, so we will be recording the Hoops HD report at a later time (probably Tuesday).  I realize the holidays mean different things to different people, and that everyone experiences them in a different way.  Some love it.  Others hate it.  If you’ve got a big family celebration plan then I hope you enjoy it and that it goes well.  If you’ve got a big family celebration planned that you’re dreading, then I hope you survive it.  If you’re unable to be with your family and friends then at the very least I hope you’re able to relax and enjoy the time to yourself.  If you ever need to connect with someone, just turn on the Diamond Head Classic and jump on Twitter.  We will be watching.  If you’re someone that doesn’t enjoy the holidays at all then I’m sure you have your reasons and I hope you get through them okay.  As I said before, just turn on the Diamond Head, jump on Twitter, and pretend that it’s not December!

Thanks to all those who watch, listen, and read.  See ya soon!!

Under the Radar Game of the Day: UC-Santa Barbara at Sacramento State

UC-Santa Barbara at Sacramento State, 10:00 PM Eastern, watchbigsky.com/pluto.tv

Today is the final day of action before we take a three day holiday break from the Under the Radar Game of the Day.  Tonight, the Gauchos of UC-Santa Barbara visit the Sacramento State Hornets.  UCSB enters the game at 9-3 on the season, already having picked up road wins at Pepperdine and Montana State.   Their three losses have all come to power conference teams — Pittsburgh, Texas A&M and USC.  Max Heidegger has scored in double figures every game this season, while Leland King has already notched five double-doubles.

In this final contest before the holiday break, the Gauchos will be visiting Sacramento State.  The host Hornets enter the game at only 3-9 on the year, with two of those wins having coming against non-D1 competition.  They did defeat Cal State-Northridge earlier this week as four starters all scored in double digits.  Joshua Patton led the way with 16 points and 8 boards for Sac State.  The Hornets will need another strong team effort like that to win against one of the favorites in the Big West conference as they play their final non-conference game of the season tonight.
