NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day featuring the Bayou Classic – CLICK HERE

-UNC Wilmington, who is a team whose tournament chances we’ve liked all season long, lost their second straight game on Thursday night.  It came at home against Charleston in an exciting game that seesawed back and forth.  If UNCW can win out until the CAA Championship game their chances of getting in are probably still around fifty percent, but as good as they are and as good as they’ve been the quality wins just aren’t on their profile and they’ll need the automatic bid in order to feel safe.

-Other than that, it was a chalky Thursday and Friday.  California won an overtime thriller against Utah in an exciting game between two bubble teams.  Gonzaga, Arizona, Oregon, and Saint Mary’s all won as well, although Oregon and Saint Mary’s had to sweat a lot more than we were expecting.

-Notre Dame’s game at North Carolina has been rescheduled for tomorrow afternoon due to a water main break in Chapel Hill.

BUBBLICIOUS SATURDAY

-MIAMI FL AT NC STATE (ACC).  This is another bubblicious game.  When two teams who are trying to land on the right side of the bubble are facing each other, it’s always a big game because it’s a good win for the resume, but it also gives the winner a leg up on a specific team they’re fighting against to make the field.

-GEORGIA TECH AT WAKE FOREST (ACC).  Another bubblcious game!!  Same story, but two different teams.  Both are trying to land on the right side of the bubble, and both could really use this win.

-ILLINOIS STATE AT WICHITA STATE (Missouri Valley).  Both teams are right on the bubble, and with limited opportunities at notable wins you kind of get the feeling that there is only room for one of them, and that the other will end up needing the automatic bid.  I think the winner of this game has a great chance of making the field if they win out.  In fact we’ve been putting Illinois State inside our bubble for the last couple of weeks and this road win would look great on their profile.  This has also turned in to one of the more heated games in this conference, so the fact that it’s both heated and of high stakes should make it fun.

-SETON HALL AT GEORGETOWN (Big East).  This is a bubblicious game between a Georgetown team that’s been playing really well and trending up, and a Seton Hall team that has completely lost their grip and needs to string together some wins just to shore themselves up.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-PURDUE AT MARYLAND (Big Ten).  We currently have both teams safely in the top half of the bracket, and in the case of Maryland they’re on the fringe of getting a protected seed, but despite their bloated record they don’t have a lot in the way of protected seed caliber wins yet.

-VIRGINIA AT SYRACUSE (ACC).  Some feel that Syracuse is starting to inch toward the bubble.  A win in a game like this would be a huge step forward.  I still like Virginia to win the ACC and think they’ll get this win on the road today.

-AKRON AT OHIO U (MAC).  If Akron wins out they should end up inside the bubble.  They’re running away from the MAC, and in the past that’s been very hard to do.

-DUQUESNE AT DAYTON (Atlantic Ten).  Dayton is a team that’s inside the bubble, but they’re not far enough inside to where they can’t get knocked out if they lose a couple of games like this.

-TEXAS AT TCU (Big Twelve).  TCU is squarely on the bubble and must take care of business in games when they are at home and playing non-tournament teams.

-PITTSBURGH AT DUKE (ACC).  Pitt has just one conference win, and although they have some good wins at the top of their profile I still think they’re a mile from the tournament.  Duke is suddenly playing a lot better and will end up as a protected seed if they keep it up.

-VALPARAISO AT GREEN BAY (Horizon League).  i don’t think Valpo can make the NCAAs without an automatic bid, but if they win out through the regular season, which they are definitely good enough to do, the committee will at least look at them.

-GEORGIA AT SOUTH CAROLINA (SEC).  Georgia may have an outside shot at reaching the bubble, but They’ll need a strong finish with wins like this in order to do it.  South Carolina seems like they’re on pace to end up in the top half of the bracket.

-IOWA STATE AT KANSAS (Big Twelve).  Kansas is almost unbeatable at home, and while Iowa State is a likely tournament team, they seem to be overmatched today.

-MARQUETTE AT DEPAUL (Big East).  Marquette has lost two straight, which is surprising after they won two straight against protected seeds, which was…well…also surprising.  This is their most winnable remaining road game so they don’t want to waste this opportunity.

-LOUISVILLE AT BOSTON COLLEGE (ACC).  I really like how this Louisville team is playing and I expect that their resume will continue to improve.

-KANSAS STATE AT BAYLOR (Big Twelve).  Baylor is coming off a very impressive performance against Kansas despite the loss.  They’re still in the hunt for a #1 seed, and are facing a K State team that’s squarely on the bubble.  K State has come close to winning some big games, so while they appear to be overmatched I wouldn’t entirely count them out.

-XAVIER AT CREIGHTON (Big East).  Both teams have lost key players for the season, and both are trying to show that they can still win big games without those players.  Creighton has arguably done so, most recently knocking off Butler on the road.   A win for Xavier will go a long way in assuring that they end up in the top half of the bracket, but that’s going to be much easier said than done.

-TENNESSEE AT MISSISSIPPI STATE (SEC).  I really like how this Tennessee team is playing.  I think they’re currently inside the bubble and that their resume will continue to improve between now and the end of the year. This is a winnable road game for the Vols.

-MINNESOTA AT ILLINOIS (Big Ten).  The Gophers have really hit the skids, and could use a road win like this to help get themselves turned back around.  Illinois’s chances of playing their way back onto the bubble are looking smaller and smaller.

-ARIZONA AT OREGON (Pac Twelve).  I still really like this Oregon team, but not quite as much as I liked them last week after they beat Utah.  The reason is that they have since lost to Colorado, and didn’t exactly bury a rather weak Arizona State team the other night.  Some of us feel that Arizona can end up on the #1 line.  I think that in order for that to happen they need to win this game.  If they don’t, they’re still in great shape, but I don’t see them getting all the way up to a #1 seed without this win.

-CONNECTICUT AT CINCINNATI (American).  Cincinnati escaped at Tulsa the other night, but at the end of the day a win is a win.  They are cruising toward the top half of the bracket, and shouldn’t have too much trouble at home today against  a UConn team that has had nothing go right for them.

-VCU AT SAINT BONAVENTURE (Atlantic Ten).  We have VCU inside the bubble, but also feel they need a strong finish in order to feel safe.  This isn’t the easiest game in the world to win, but it’s also the kind of game that a tournament team should be able to win.

-WYOMING AT AIR FORCE (Mountain West, Front Range).  Okay, this game has no meaning whatsoever other than being a Front Range game, and we love the Front Range!!

-UTAH AT STANFORD (Pac Twelve).  Utah just suffered a loss to California in an overtime thriller that they really needed to win.  They’re on the wrong side of the bubble right now and need to string together some wins if they want to make the field.  Picking this one up on the road is kind of a must.

-OKLAHOMA STATE AT WEST VIRGINIA (Big Twelve).  Oklahoma State is on the fringe of the bubble, and although a loss really won’t hurt them, a win would help the immensely.  West Virginia appears to be cruising toward a protected seed so long as they hold serve in games like this.

-MEMPHIS AT UCF (American).  Memphis’s at-large hopes have been mostly extinguished, but I suppose if they win out and pick up a notable win in the conference tournament they’ll get a look.

-ARKANSAS AT MISSOURI (SEC).  Arkansas can add to their total number of road wins.  In fact, if they fail to do that, they should probably be out of our next bracket projection.

-OHIO STATE AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten).  It’s a rivalry game, but what’s more important is that it involves a Michigan team that is right on the bubble and needs a strong finish to the season in order to feel safe.

-SAINT MARY’S AT SAN DIEGO (West Coast).  Like all conference games that aren’t against Gonzaga, this is a game that SMC should win without too much trouble.

-OKLAHOMA AT TEXAS TECH (Big Twelve).  Texas Tech has enough big wins to keep them within reach of the bubble, but they still have a lot of work to do and can’t afford to lose games like this.

-SMU AT TULSA (American).  Tulsa isn’t the easiest team to beat at home, but they’re a team that solid NCAA Tournament teams like SMU should be expected to beat at home.

-DELAWARE AT UNC WILMINGTON (Colonial).  UNCW has lost two straight, which likely kills their chances to get an at-large, but the committee should at least consider them, and may still take them, if they win out and lose to Charleston in the finals.

-USC AT WASHINGTON STATE (Pac Twelve).  USC has a good resume, but they appear to have gotten better in the last week or two, and could really come thundering down the stretch.  I’ll be surprised if they don’t add another road win to their resume today.

-MIDDLE TENNESSEE AT UTEP (Conference USA).  Same story and a different day with Middle Tennessee.  If they win out they should be safely in the field.

-SAINT JOHN’S AT VILLANOVA (Big East).  Saint John’s is an amazing 5-6 in Big East play after showing all the signs of not being able to beat anyone other than DePaul prior to league play starting.  They’re swinging way over their heads today against a Nova team that seems to be heading for the #1 line, but the Johnnies have been a bit of a surprise.

-KENTUCKY AT FLORIDA (SEC).  Kentucky has lost two straight, which may have killed their chances at a #1 seed, but this is still a big game for them.  Whenever you can pick up a road win against a ranked team it’s a big game.

-SANTA CLARA AT GONZAGA (West Coast).  BYU came back and made it exciting, but you still never felt that the Zags were in any danger of losing at any point in that game.  Tonight will most likely end up looking very much like a buy game.

-UCLA AT WASHINGTON (Pac Twelve).  UCLA is looking to pick up their second straight road win, which is a nice way to rebound after two straight losses.

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Grambling at Southern

Grambling at Southern, 6:30 PM Eastern, gojagsports.com

It is time for the Bayou Classic, basketball style, tonight as the two biggest rivals in the SWAC meet in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in our Under the Radar Game of the Day.  Entering play today, these two long-time rivals are part of a logjam of teams in the conference standings as only 3 games separate second place from 9th.  Grambling State and Southern both sit at 5-4 in SWAC play as the teams battle to finish in the top 8 (and earn a berth in the conference tournament) and beyond that to finish in the top four (and earn a home game in the quarterfinal round before the tournament moves to Houston for the semifinals and finals).

Southern University is currently 9-13 overall.  The Jaguars won the SWAC Tournament last season before losing to Holy Cross in the First Four.  Their tournament bid was a story in and of itself after two years spent ineligible for postseason play due to the NCAA (unjustly in our opinions) punishing the school for mistakes in submitting APR numbers years before.  Shawn Prudhomme has led the Jaguars so far this season, with double digit scoring in all but one conference game.  He and his teammates have lost their last two games, and desperately need a win in this rivalry matchup to get things moving back in the right direction.

Grambling State holds the distinction of being the only program to ever win the HoopsHD Centenary Award for the worst D1 program in the nation twice.  The Tigers have not won 10 or more games since 2011 but, at 9-12 entering play tonight, have a chance to do that tonight and maybe even take a shot at a winning overall record, something they have not had since 2006.  Remond Brown is one of the key players for Grambling, and was one of three player in double figures last time out in an overtime win over Mississippi Valley State.  Ervin Mitchell led the team in that game with 24 points and Avery Ugba had a double-double.  If the three all play as well again today, the Tigers have a chance to win this version of the Bayou Classic and pick up that huge 10th victory.

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Buffalo at Ball State

Buffalo at Ball State, 9:00 PM Eastern, ESPNU

For our latest Bracket Rundown video podcast, CLICK HERE.

The Akron Zips are dominating the Mid-American Conference so far this season, sitting at a perfect 9-0 in league play and holding a 3 game lead in the overall conference standings (4 games in the East Division, though division standings are ignored in seeding the conference tournament).  As far as the rest of the MAC, 10 of the remaining 11 teams are within three games of each other in the battles for 2nd through 11th places, meaning that we could have a ton of fun competition down the stretch as teams try to grab a top four seed (which would avoid a first round game) or at least grab seeds 5-8 (which would provide a home game in the first round before the tournament heads to Cleveland starting with the quarterfinals).  Tonight, the team currently holding sole possession of second place overall and first place in the West Division, Ball State, hosts Buffalo in our Under the Radar Game of the Day.

Ball State enters play tonight at 15-7  overall and 6-3 in MAC play.  The Cardinals are one of the MAC’s hottest teams, having won 6 of their last 7 games after starting conference play 0-2.  They were able to pull out an 81-80 home win over Toledo on Tuesday night, thanks to 26 points and 8 assists from Tayler Persons, plus 19 points and 9 rebounds from Franko House.  Buffalo sits at 10-12 overall and 4-5 in league play.  The Bulls gave conference leader Akron one of their biggest scares of the season last weekend, losing 91-90 at Akron.  Blake Hamilton led the way for the Bulls in that loss with 33 points, though three other players also scored in double-digits including 19 from Willie Conner.  Ball State needs to make certain they do not overlook this Buffalo team tonight, especially with the Cardinals facing a road trip to Akron early next week, and their chance to de-throne the current kings of the MAC.

NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day, which features the top two teams in the Southland – CLICK HERE

-Kansas and Baylor sure put on a show last night.  Kansas has not lost a home game since January 5th, 2014.  If I counted correctly, they are now 60-1 in their last 61 games, and 108-4 in their last 112 games.  And, it’s not like they’ve been playing creampuffs.  Winning at Kansas is harder to do than winning any NCAA Tournament game that a team may play.  And, Baylor played a great game despite foul trouble and a couple of missed open looks.  So, what do I take away from it?  Kansas is great, but we knew that already.  Baylor is actually better than I thought, and I thought they were pretty damn good prior to last night’s game.  I know the result must sting a bit for the Bears, but in terms of the NCAA Tournament Kansas and Baylor really aren’t in each other’s way.  Both could wind up with #1 seeds, and if they do Baylor is most likely on their way to Memphis for the regionals and Kansas is most likely on their way to Kansas City.  Both are likely to end up in Tulsa for the first and second round, so it isn’t as if there is one spot that they’re both competing for.

-Cincinnati trailed for almost the entire game against Tulsa, but they kicked it into gear in the final minutes just as I was ready to write them off, and they somehow weren’t trailing when the horn went off.

-Indiana beat Penn State at home, which isn’t all that much of a surprise.  They needed three overtimes to do it, and a last second shot that was just within a millisecond of being in time.  That was a surprise.

-Clemson downed Georgia Tech at home and picked up another conference win that they desperately needed.

-Syracuse won their first road game of the year in an overtime thriller at NC State.  They still have a ways to go before reaching the bubble, but this certainly helps.

-Marquette went into Saint John’s and ended up getting beaten rather handily.  The Johnnies, who we all seemingly agreed were terrible coming into league play, are now a very modest 5-6 in one of the strongest leagues in the country.  Marquette has dropped two straight after winning their two biggest games of the year.

-TCU picked up what is probably their biggest win of the year as they took down Kansas State in overtime.  It’s a big win for a bubble team, and a rather disappointing loss for another bubble team.

-Texas Tech is another bubble team.  Or, was.  Losing to a non tournament team is never a good idea if you’re a bubble team, and they were unable to get it done at Texas last night.

-Xavier won a thriller against Seton Hall.  It was a game that both teams really needed to win and that seesawed back and forth.  Seton Hall missed what would have been a game winning three at the buzzer and is now just 3-6 in Big East play.

-Villanova, Virginia, UCLA, Florida State, South Carolina, and Purdue are all solid tournament teams that picked up wins last night.  Purdue’s was the most notable as they blew out Northwestern at home.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-MISSOURI AT FLORIDA (SEC).  This is a conference game that will likely end up looking very much like a buy game.  Mizzou’s next SEC win will be their first.

-MICHIGAN STATE AT NEBRASKA (Big Ten).  Nebraska has an unimpressive record and profile, but they’re probably a little better than what it indicates given how close a lot of their games have been.  This would be a nice win for the Spartans, but it won’t be easy.

-MEMPHIS AT SOUTH FLORIDA (American).  Memphis has an outside shot at best.  In order to get it they basically have to win out.

-CHARLESTON AT UNC WILMINGTON (Colonial).  I cannot believe this was not Chad’s pick for the UTR Game of the Day.  It’s the top two teams in the Colonial, and it is basically the last big game before the conference tournament that UNCW plays, so it is essential to their at-large chances.  UNCW is coming off a decisive loss to William & Mary, but I still think they’re safe so long as that ends up being their only strike.  They’re at home tonight, and hopefully they will be refocused.  We must give a shout out to CofC as well, who’s program has undergone a drastic turnaround in recent years, and if they win tonight they’ll be tied at the top of the standings.

-VALPARAISO AT MILWAUKEE (Horizon).  If Valpo wins out I think the committee will at least look at them, but chances are they’ll need the auto bid.

-MIDDLE TENNESSEE AT UTSA (Conference USA).  Middle continues to dominate the league and will be safely inside the NCAA Tournament bubble if they win out.

-ARIZONA AT OREGON STATE (Pac Twelve).  This is probably the most winnable conference road game that any power conference team could possibly play.

-UTAH AT CALIFORNIA (Pac Twelve).  This is a bubblicous game between two teams who desperately need this win.

-GONZAGA AT BYU (West Coast).  Some think this will be a test for Gonzaga.  I really don’t think it will be, but I agree that it will come closer to being a test than any of their remaining games minus their trip to Saint Mary’s.

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Stephen F Austin at Sam Houston State

Stephen F. Austin at Sam Houston State, 9:00 PM Eastern, ASN/southlanddigitalnetwork.com

For our most recent Under the Radar Video podcast, CLICK HERE.

Despite a couple of huge games in other Under the Radar conferences (most notably the Colonial and Ohio Valley) tonight, the Under the Radar Game of the Day can never resist a chance to focus in on the Battle of the Piney Woods in Hunstville, Texas, as the Southland’s two most bitter rivals, Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State, square off for the first time this season tonight.  Tonight’s battle is even more notable as the host Bearkats have lost 13 straight games in the series and currently trail it overall 105-94.  Sam Houston State enters play tonight at 16-6 overall and 7-2 in Southland play, half a game ahead of surprising New Orleans and in first place.  After opening conference play 0-2, the Bearkats have won 7 in a row, including a picking up a win at New Orleans in mid-January and defeating Southeastern Louisiana 71-69 over the weekend.  Four players were in double figures for the ‘Kats in the win this weekend, led by 16 from Aurimas Majauskas.

Stephen F. Austin entered this season having won an amazing 59 of their last 60 games against SLC foes.  With many of the key players from those teams gone, and Brad Underwood now coaching at Oklahoma State, it did not shock us too much to see the Lumberjacks start league play 1-2.  It is almost more surprising that they have won 5 of 6 since then to improve to 6-3 in league play (11-10 overall) and move within one game of first place.  Ivan Canete led his team with 14 points in a big home win over the weekend against New Orleans.  If the Lumberjacks can take down their rival on the road tonight, they will send a message that just because the names on the roster and on the bench have changed, they are still ready to make a run at the conference title and a return trip to the Big Dance.
