Under the Radar: January 25th

Tonight’s featured conference is the SoCon, which saw a crazy night with Chattanooga losing to VMI in one of the biggest surprises of the season, and UNC Greensboro also falling at Wofford.  East Tennessee needed double overtime to get by Samford, so we have a very tight race at the top of the conference.

From there, we look at the other 21 UTR conferences and talk about how UNC Wilmington is on the cusp of cracking the rankings, how Middle Tennessee continues to dominate Conference USA, how impressive Vermont has looked in the America East, and how Akron has a shot at winning out and landing inside the bubble.

We also discuss the Team of the People, the UNH Wildcats, and talk about how much better they are than their record due to how unfairly some of their losses were.  All that, and more.

NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Well, last night was certainly a hell of a night!  There are only four teams that are ranked in the top four.  It’s true!  I counted them, and there are only four.  Last night, three of those four teams played, and all three of them lost.

-Marquette is having quite a week.  They started off by picking up a road win at Creighton, and at the time we all felt it was a big win, but that it also had a big asterisk given that it was Creighton’s first full game without Watson.  Well, there is no asterisk by last night’s game.  Villanova took a double digit lead into the half and by all accounts were cruising toward another road win.  Marquette shot the lights out in the second half, but Nova still held on to their lead until the final few minutes when Marquette finally drew even, then went ahead, and then ultimately won the game when Nova missed what would have been a game tying shot in the final seconds.  The fans stormed the court, and Marquette has stormed inside the bubble.

-Kentucky losing at Tennessee was probably the biggest surprise.  Tennessee isn’t a tournament team, but they have had some showcase moments this season, including a big one last night.  They pretty much led for the entire second half and although Kentucky did tie it late, they couldn’t quite get over the hump.

-West Virginia taking down Kansas in Morgantown was easily the least surprising of the “upsets.”  Considering that West Virginia is a likely protected seed, I don’t think you can even call it an upset.  Whenever a protected seed wins at home, even if it’s against the #1 ranked team, it is not an upset.  It’s not like Kansas went to Indiana State and lost.  That would be an upset.

-Virginia went into Notre Dame, and although it was close for much of the game, they absolutely ran away from them down the stretch.  I still like this Virginia team.  I picked them to win the league at the beginning of the year, and although Florida State has beaten them at home and also gone through the toughest gauntlet of ACC play, I still like the Hoos chances of finishing in first place.  This is their second true road win against a likely protected seed.  That’s a remarkable profile!

-Louisville won at Pitt.  That’s not really noteworthy, but the final score was 106-51.  That’s noteworthy.  Even people who believe everyone should get a participation trophy would be against giving one to Pitt after last night’s game.

-Purdue picked up a really nice road win at Michigan State.  Michigan State is still inside the bubble, but you get the sense that they’re beginning to lose their grip.

-And last but not least (or perhaps it is least), Arkansas picked up a win at Vanderbilt last night.  The win was against a Vandy team that will likely miss the NIT, and the win came in a rather ridiculous fashion after Arkansas looked very unimpressive for the first 39-and-a-half minutes and then looked unbelievably lucky for the final thirty seconds.  But, they did get the win.  Everyone else at Hoops HD thinks of Arkansas as being a tournament caliber team.  I’m the outlier here.  I still feel that I’m right and everyone else is wrong, but I cannot deny that Arkansas’s paper looks better than the rest of the teams around them that are hovering around the bubble.  They now have three true road wins, and although none came against tournament teams, they did get one against the same Tennessee team that just beat Kentucky, and Vandy and Texas A&M who are a combined and respectable 14-7 at home.  That’s not great, but nothing on their profile really makes you hold your nose.  Still, if they want to land in the field, then I think they actually have to beat someone that’s better than just an NIT team, which they have yet to do.  I know they have some wins against some good UTR teams, but good UTR teams are not tournament teams without the automatic bid and in some cases aren’t even NIT caliber teams without the automatic bid.  But, nevertheless, for now I’d probably have them in my field if I did my new seed list today.

And Chad is NOT right about them!!  HE’S JUST LUCKY!!!

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-MEMPHIS AT TEMPLE (American).  Memphis is actually in my field right now, although barely, and I have them in there thinking that they would not be in the real committee’s.  That being said, I do think they have a chance to make a run at the bubble, but that will require a very strong finish where they avoid losses in games like this.

-SMU AT UCF (American).  UCF seems to have slipped entirely out of the picture, but they’re still one of the better teams in the league and it would be a nice road win for UCF if they’re able to pick this up.

-MINNESOTA AT OHIO STATE (Big Ten).  Minney has lost three straight games and needs a win not just to shore up their profile, but to swing the momentum back their way.  Ohio State hasn’t been the best team this year, but they are at home and it is a game that they’re capable of winning.

-FLORIDA STATE AT GEORGIA TECH (ACC).  Florida State has just one loss in conference, and some pretty big wins.  Winning at Georgia Tech isn’t easy this year, but FSU is coming off a six game stretch against ranked teams and they were 5-1 in that stretch, so this team is certainly battle tested.  They’re still in play for a first place finish and a #1 seed in the Big Dance.

-CREIGHTON AT GEORGETOWN (Big East).  Every game is a big game for Creighton because they need to show the committee that they’re still capable of holding serve without Maurice Watson.

-TEXAS TECH AT BAYLOR (Big Twelve).  Baylor still has just one loss on the season and given the carnage from yesterday they are in a position to jump a couple spots in the polls (for whatever that’s worth).  Texas Tech has some nice wins and should be okay if they hold serve, but if they could somehow pull this one off they’ll be a lot more than just okay.

-RHODE ISLAND AT RICHMOND (Atlantic Ten).  It’s possible that Rhode Island can play their way back onto the bubble, but they’ll really have to thunder down the stretch to do it.  That would mean winning games like this one tonight, and they haven’t been the best road team this year.

-BUTLER AT SETON HALL (Big East).  Butler has a very good overall profile, but one area where they’ve struggled this year is in true road games.  They needed overtime to get by DePaul on the road in their last game.  Seton Hall should make the field, but adding a win like this to their resume would help a ton.  So, there’s something to be gained by both teams in this one.

-ALABAMA AT GEORGIA (SEC).  If Georgia is going to get things turned around and make a run at the NCAA Tournament, they better start running now.  They cannot afford to lose this one.

-FLORIDA AT LSU (SEC).  Florida needs a conference road win to rebound after two straight losses, the most recent one being a rather surprising home loss to Vandy.

-BOSTON COLLEGE AT MIAMI FL (ACC).  It’s quite simple Miami is currently on the bubble and cannot afford a loss in a game like this.

-UCLA AT USC (Pac Twelve).  This one should be fun.  UCLA is coming off a loss at home to Arizona that may have been damaging as far as making the #1 line goes, but they’re still in very good shape.  USC is having a good year, but a win in this game will make it much better, as well as give their resume a bit of a boost.  It’s a rivalry game between two tournament caliber teams, so it should be fun.

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Florida Gulf Coast at North Florida

Florida Gulf Coast at North Florida, 7:00 PM Eastern, espn3

The Atlantic Sun Conference is front and center tonight as two of the three teams currently tied for first place in the conference standings meet in Jacksonville, Florida.  Florida Gulf Coast enters play tonight at 4-1 in A-Sun play and 15-6 overall.  The Eagles looked like they had a chance to dominate this conference after jumping out to a 3-0 league start with three consecutive road wins, before they suffered a somewhat shocking home loss last week to South Carolina-Upstate (the third team tied at 4-1 entering play tonight).  FGCU’s power ratings are still by far the best in the conference.  Junior Brandon Goodwin has led the team offensively, including seven games already this year in which he has topped the 20 point mark.  Containing him is they key to defeating the Eagles, as Upstate did last week when they held him to 12 points and only 2 assists (versus 4 turnovers).

North Florida was supposed to contend for the A-Sun title this season but ended up disappointing us during the non-conference part of the year, resulting in only a 9-13 overall record.  4 of those wins were against non-D1 opponents, meaning the Ospreys only have one D1 win (by 1 point over North Dakota on a neutral court) against non-Atlantic Sun teams.  The Ospreys have looked much better since conference play began, including having picked up a win at USC-Upstate.  Senior Dallas Moore seems to be putting this team on his back, as he has averaged almost 32 points in his team’s last three games.  With the offensive talent on the floor tonight, and the great battle looming between Brandon Goodwin and Dallas Moore, this game has a chance to be a ton of fun.  If the Ospreys can protect their home court and capture the win, they have a chance to prove that the non-conference struggles were meaningless in the battle for the Atlantic Sun regular season title and a chance for home court advantage in the conference tournament.

NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-NC State won at Duke last night, and I think I would have been less surprised if I had woken up this morning duck-taped to the ceiling.  My biggest criticism of NC State was that they hadn’t done anything.  That is no longer valid.  They’ve certainly done something now.  It was a huge win for them and could make the difference of whether or not they make the field just so long as they hold serve from this point on.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-AUBURN AT SOUTH CAROLINA (SEC).  This is one of those winnable home games where South Carolina needs to hold serve.

-RUTGERS AT MARYLAND (Big Ten).  Last year at this time Maryland had a very similar record, and got as high as #2 in the rankings.  This year, they’re ranked #22nd.  I don’t know if that means anything or not, but I did think it was interesting because I felt they weren’t as good as their ranking last year, but also feel they’re a little bit better than their ranking this year.  Anyway, this is a winnable conference home game and I don’t expect them to have too much trouble.

-PURDUE AT MICHIGAN STATE (Big Ten).  This is a big road game for Purdue that would look very good on their resume, and a somewhat pivotal home game for Michigan State who’s trying to fight their way into the top half of the bracket.

-LOUISVILLE AT PITTSBURGH (ACC).  Pitt is just 1-5 in the ACC and one gets the feeling that they’re starting to lose their grip and slip out of the tournament picture.  They need a conference win, so they need to come into this with a huge sense of urgency.  Louisville is coming off a loss at Florida State, but they played very well in that game after falling behind early so they should come into this feeling encouraged despite the loss.

-KANSAS AT WEST VIRGINIA (Big Twelve).  This starts a rather rough stretch for Kansas where they play West Virginia, Kentucky, and Baylor.  Even if they just win one out of the three, you still have to like their chances of ending up on the #1 line, especially since two of those three games are on the road.

-AKRON AT WEST VIRGINIA (MAC).  I like this Akron team, and I feel they’ll be right on the bubble if they run away from the rest of the MAC.  They may be good enough to win out through the regular season.

-SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AT WICHITA STATE (Missouri Valley).  Wichita State is 17-4 on the year, and you have to assume they’ll at least be on the bubble if they win out, but the quality of their wins is pretty thin, so their margin for error is very small.

-VIRGINIA AT NOTRE DAME (ACC).  This is another ACC match-up between two likely protected seeds.  My pick to win the league was Virginia and I’m not swaying from that.  That being said, this will not be an easy game for them to win.

-WAKE FOREST AT SYRACUSE (ACC).  An extremely bubblicious game between two teams who really need this win.

-VILLANOVA AT MARQUETTE (Big East).  Nova has looked like a #1 seed all season long, and although it’s not easy to win at Marquette it’s the kind of game a #1 seed can certainly win.  Marquette just picked up a big win at Creighton so they should come into this with some momentum.  it would be a huge win on their resume and have them breathing a lot easier.

-ARKANSAS AT VANDERBILT (SEC).  Arkansas seems to be everyone’s favorite team here at Hoops HD.  They’re quite impressed with how they won all those buy games and beat Houston.  No one likes Vandy, but if the Commodores can somehow pull this one off they’ll be tied with Arkansas in the SEC standings!!

-KENTUCKY AT TENNESSEE (SEC).  No one in the SEC has really made Kentucky sweat yet and that probably won’t happen tonight either.

-PENN STATE AT WISCONSIN (Big Ten).  I still like this Wisconsin team more than anyone else in the Big Ten, but Penn State has made a lot more noise than what we were expecting.  If they can somehow pull this off, and that’s a VERY big if, they will likely be within reach of the bubble.

-KANSAS STATE AT IOWA STATE (Big Twelve).  I get the sense that if the season ended today both teams would be inside the bubble, but on the bottom half of the bracket.  That makes this a big game for both teams because both have a lot of room for improvement.

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Kent State at Northern Illinois

Kent State at Northern Illinois, 8:00 PM Eastern, espn3

For our most recent HoopsHD Report video podcast, CLICK HERE.

The Under the Radar Game of the Day is off to DeKalb, Illinois tonight as the co-leaders in the MAC West, Northern Illinois (4-2 in conference, 12-7 overall) play host to the Kent State Golden Flashes (2-4, 10-9).  The NIU Huskies have turned from league doormat into a legitimate contender during the past six seasons under head coach Mark Montgomery.  They only won a total of 10 games during his first two years, but have seen their win total increase all the way to 21 last season, with a shot to equal or surpass that number this year.  To put things in perspective, during the 10 seasons prior to Montgomery taking over, the Huskies only have tw0 winning seasons, and never reached 18 victories.  NIU has been led this season by junior Marin Maric.  Maric grabbed his third double-double in the last four games during the Huskies’ 78-69 loss to Ohio University over the weekend.  He also had a double-double back on January 10 in Kent, Ohio, during his team’s 74-70 overtime road win over the Golden Flashes.

Kent State will be looking to avenge their earlier loss to Northern Illinois tonight.  Deon Edwin (18 points) and Jaylin Walker (22 points) were the team leaders in that earlier loss.  The Golden Flashes did snap a four game losing streak over the weekend with  home win over Toledo.  Edwin had 23 points in that game and was joined in double figures by Jimmy Hall (27 points).  Northern Illinois has won 9 times at home already this season and will be looking to increase that number by one.  If they do, they will keep pace, if not move ahead, of Eastern Michigan in the battle for the MAC West title.  But in order to get there, they must first get by Kent State.

The Hoops HD Report: January 23rd

Chad is joined by a full Hoops HD panel as they run through all of the power and multi-bid conferences and focus on all the teams that are still unbeaten in conference play.  In the ACC they talk about how as many as 11 teams are still within a realistic reach of the NCAA Tournament, and how NC State is now in the picture with their big win over Duke, and how Clemson, despite a six game losing streak, still has a chance.  They also look back at Arizona’s two big wins against UCLA and USC, discuss Gonzaga’s chances of getting a #1 seed, and David and Chad argue about whether or not Arkansas belongs in the field.  All that, and much more…
