NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day between Wright State and Loyola Chicago – CLICK HERE

-A busy night last night with some noteworthy results that may have gone unnoticed.  Saint Bonaventure picked up a really nice road win at Hofstra, which may not sound like a lot, but Hofstra is generally a very good team at home, and with just two losses Saint Bona may be a team to keep an eye on.

Chattanooga also overcame an early double digit deficit to come back and beat Marshall, who came into that game with just one loss.  Chattanooga was at home so they won’t get a ton of credit for it, but it does indicate that they’re good enough to win out or come close to it, which is what they’ll have to do in order to impress the committee.

-Rhode Island didn’t have too much trouble at home against an Old Dominion team that isn’t great, but isn’t always the easiest team to beat either

-As for the spotlight games, Duke looked like Duke and although they didn’t blow out a very good Florida team, they didn’t exactly sweat them out either.  They are not at full strength, and they still look like the nation’s best team.  Just imagine when they get back to full strength.

-Villanova didn’t really sweat out La Salle either, but La Salle was competitive, and was even within four with less than two minutes to go.  La Salle was a sub-200 team a year ago, and are easily a top 100 team this year.  It’s a long shot, but they will have opportunities at good wins in the future.  At 4-3 with some pretty decent showings so far they are a team to at least keep an eye on.

-Michigan got a nice win at home against a Texas team that has been struggling.  It came down to the final seconds, and you got the sense that both teams kind of needed a win like this not so much for their paper, but for their momentum and morale.  At 4-4 Texas still has a ton of opportunities ahead of them, but they do have quite a bit of ground to make up.  It wasn’t the most aesthetically pleasing game, but it was a close and exciting game.

-Ohio State followed up a very impressive recent showing at Virginia with a very unimpressive eye gouging performance last night at home against Florida Atlantic.  They ended up losing in overtime in what has to be one of the biggest toe stubs of the year by a team that we actually think can make the Tournament.  I know UConn lost to Wagner, but UConn no longer falls into the category of “teams that we think can make the tournament.”

-Both Minnesota and Illinois had to sweat out home buy games as well.  Chances are we won’t be talking about either one of them for much longer.

-Notre Dame crushed Fort Wayne.  They made the score look respectable in the final minutes, but for most of the game Notre Dame led by 20+ points.  I was excited about this game and thought Fort Wayne would compete.  I was wrong.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-GEORGE MASON AT PENN STATE.  Both teams come in at 6-3 and I suppose it’s possible that one or both of them may have a pulse.

-BUFFALO AT PITTSBURGH.  This is a buy game, but Buffalo should at least be able to compete so we’ll go ahead and highlight it.

-GEORGIA TECH AT VCU.  VCU needs to come into this game with a sense of urgency.  They’re 6-2, which isn’t terrible, but they don’t exactly have a huge margin for error right now either.

-BUTLER AT INDIANA STATE.  This is a winnable road game for a Butler team that has looked very good so far this year.

-CALIFORNIA VS SETON HALL (Pearl Harbor Classic).  This is a neutral floor win that both teams could really use, and would be their biggest win of the season to date.

-VALPARAISO AT KENTUCKY.  We’ve been saying that we think Valpo is a fringe bubble team and that they have a chance to make the NCAAs even without the automatic bid.  They’re way overmatched tonight, but if they somehow pull this off, they’ll no longer be a fringe bubble team.  They’ll be a solid NCAA team.

-TCU AT SMU.  TCU is a surprise team so far this year.  They come in at 8-0 and have a chance to pick up a road win in a rivalry game against an SMU team that has looked good at times, but bad at other times.  Most of the time this is just a ho-hum game despite it being a rivalry, but there is definitely a reason to turn in and watch tonight.

-CREIGHTON AT NEBRASKA.  This is Creighton’s first true road game of the year, and they should be tested by a Nebraska team who has been competitive at times.  Creighton has absolutely owned this series, though, and they’ve been very impressive so far this season.

-DAVIDSON AT NORTH CAROLINA.  Davidson needs a big statement win in order for them to put together a tournament caliber resume.  A win tonight would definitely qualify, but that’s far easier said than done.

-XAVIER AT COLORADO.  Xavier is looking for their first true road win of the season, and Colorado is looking to add a quality win to their profile as well.  Don’t be surprised to see both in the NCAA Tournament, and we could even see Xavier as a protected seed.

-SAN DIEGO STATE AT GRAND CANYON.  Grand Canyon managed a win in this game last year, and are more than capable of pulling it off again this year.  At 4-2, San Diego State really needs this road game.  Both losses have come on the road, and their margin for error when it comes to building their NCAA profile is very small.  GCU may not be a brand name, but it would be a decent win to have on their profile.

-WASHINGTON AT GONZAGA.  IT’S BACK!!!  These two met last year, but it was part of an exempt event.  The two head coaches don’t like each other, and it’s quite a fascinating history that the two have, so that alone makes it an intriguing game.  Gonzaga is clearly the superior team, and they’re at home, so it will take a tremendous effort from Washington to pull off the upset.

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Wright State at Loyola-Chicago

Wright State at Loyola-Chicago, 8:00 PM Eastern, espn3

The Under the Radar Game of the Day heads to the Windy City tonight for a non-conference battle between the Horizon League’s Wright State Raiders and the Missouri Valley Conference’s Loyola Ramblers.  Wright State, under new head coach Scott Nagy, is off to a solid 6-3 start to the season, though they have lost their last two games, at Georgia State and at Penn State.  Grant Benzinger will be one of the keys for the Raiders tonight.  After three straight games over 20 points, including a 32 point effort in the loss to Georgia State, he was held to only 4 points against Penn State.  The Raiders will also look for more offense from Mark Alstork.  The junior averaged 29 points per game over the first five this season, but has only been slightly over 12 per game in the last four.  If both players can pick things up tonight, they have a very good chance of picking up a solid road victory.

Loyola-Chicago is coming off of a strong home win over Steve Fischer’s San Diego State Aztecs as part of the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge series.  The Ramblers are now 7-2 on the season, with their losses coming to St. Joe’s and North Carolina State.  Aundre Jackson led the way in the win over the Aztecs with 24 points.  Also keep an eye on Milton Doyle who has scored in double-digits every game so far this year.  Loyola’s win over San Diego State was the most surprising result from the MWC-MVC Challenge Series, and the Ramblers will be trying to prove tonight that it was not just a fluke and that this team could be a factor in conference play this season.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-NEW HAMPSHIRE AT AMERICAN.  THE TEAM OF THE PEOPLE!!!  Your team!!  EVERYONE’S TEAM!!  UNH is back in action tonight as they try to pick up their third road win and improve to 6-3 on the year.  #GoDancingOrDie

-HOUSTON AT ARKANSAS.  Both teams come into this game at 6-1, but we really don’t know if either of them are any good yet.  Both teams are going through a rebuilding phase that seems to be going well, but chances are neither are quite at the end of it just yet.

-PURDUE VS ARIZONA STATE (Jimmy V Classic).  Purdue comes into this game having looked good, but who’s profile is still missing a lot of pieces (as are most teams at this stage).  Picking up this win away from home against a somewhat formidible 5-3 Arizona State team should help.  To date their best win is against Auburn.

-EAST CAROLINA AT VIRGINIA.  East Carolina comes into this game at a very quiet 7-2.  Chances are they are way overmatched, but if ECU were to pull this off, they’d go from a very quiet 7-2 to a very noisy 8-2 and suddenly be a national story.

-CHARLOTTE AT WAKE FOREST.  Both teams have very respectable 6-2 records and although I’m not ready to declare them tournament caliber teams just yet, they are both off to a good start and tonight should be a fun in-state match-up.

-VILLANOVA VS LA SALLE (Big Five).  Villanova has been blowing through the Big Five so far.  La Salle appears to be much improved this year at 4-2.  That being said, Nova will likely continue to blow through the Big Five, and La Salle will still be much improved this year, but will be 4-3.

-OLD DOMINION AT RHODE ISLAND.  After two straight losses, Rhody desperately needs to rebound, pick up a win, and get their season turned back around.  Tonight is no gimme game.  Old Dominion has just two losses on the year, and one of those was in overtime against Louisville.  In fact, if they can pick up this road win you have to start looking at the case Old Dominion is making for themselves.

-SAINT BONAVENTURE AT HOFSTRA.  Both teams have a lot of work to do in order to continue building their resumes, but a win for Saint Bona gets them to 6-2 with their first true road win of the season against a Hofstra team that’s typically very tough to beat at home.

-CALIFORNIA VS PRINCETON (Pearl Harbor Classic).  Cal is 6-1, but they’ve pretty much just won home buy games.  This event is a chance for them to add some meat to their profile by picking up a few notable wins away from home.  I still think Princeton is capable of being dangerous, but they certainly haven’t always shown it this season.

-FRESNO STATE AT MARQUETTE.  Both teams have work to do, but both have potential.  Fresno State comes in at 5-2 and is looking for their third true road win of the season, and this would certainly be a quality road win to pick up, which is important because the rest of the Mountain West is somewhat lacking in the quality department right now.

-FLORIDA VS DUKE (Jimmy V Classic).  This is a great match-up between a Florida team that’s really looking for a defining quality win, and a Duke team by all accounts is a protected seed caliber team.

-TEXAS AT MICHIGAN.  Both of these these teams have demonstrated potential, but both also have a lot of work to do.  Now, both teams have a lot of time and opportunities to get that work done, so the loser of this game is far from buried, but the winner of this game will have a nice head start on getting all that work done.

-FORT WAYNE AT NOTRE DAME.  Fort Wayne already has one signature win this season.  If they take down the Irish at Notre Dame, then you have to start thinking of them as an NCAA Tournament caliber team and the type of team that can get an at-large bid if they fail to win their conference tournament.

-HAWAI’I VS SETON HALL (Pearl Harbor Classic).  Seton Hall is off to a fair start, but they still have a lot of work to do and they need to pick up at least one win out in Hawai’i.

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Marshall at Chattanooga

Marshall at Chattanooga, 7:00 PM Eastern, socondigitalnetwork.com

For our latest HoopsHD Report Video Podcast, CLICK HERE.

There are days when picking the Under the Radar Game of the Day feels likes pulling teeth, with a pile of games on the schedule that all seem to stink to high heaven.  And then there are days like today where it seems that at least half a dozen games could easily qualify.  Part 2 of this year’s Battle of the Boulevard between Belmont and Lipscomb is being played.  Northeastern and Harvard are meeting in a battle between the best two teams in the city of Boston (yes, I am looking at you Boston College).  Monmouth is visiting Wagner.  The #TeamOfThePeople New Hampshire Wildcats are on the road at American.  But, in the end, the choice for today’s game had to be Marshall, off to a solid start out of Conference USA, taking a trip down to Chattanooga, Tennessee to get some of the best fried chicken you will ever eat, at Champy’s (make that to play a game against the hometown Mocs).

Marshall enters tonight’s game at 5-2 on the season.  After a 4-0 start, they lost at Ohio State, but then rebounded at home with a very impressive 10 point victory over an Ohio University team that we believe could end up in the at-large bid discussions.  Unfortunately for the Thundering Herd, they gave back a lot of what they had gained in that win by following it up with a road loss at Eastern Kentucky.  Head coach Dan D’Antoni’s team had all five starters in double figures in the Ohio win, led by Jon Elmore’s 28 points.  Elmore had 19 more in the EKU loss, along with 7 assists, but only two other starters had double digits in that game.  The Herd will need Elmore and his teammates to play better than that if they want to get the road win tonight.  They will also need Elmore to fix his assist-to-turnover ratio, which has been very close to 1:1 over the team’s last four games.  If the turnovers can be cut back, and the offense can be spread out a bit more, the Thundering Herd could win tonight and prove that they will be a factor in Conference USA this season.

Chattanooga enters tonight’s game at 6-2, and in need of quite a few more solid wins if they want to have a shot at an at-large bid this season.  The Mocs have already won at Tennessee, and certainly were not disgraced in any way by losing at North Carolina.  However, a disappointing loss on a neutral court to Arkansas State is a minor blemish on their resume and does not give them very many more strikes the rest of the way.  Wins tonight against Marshall and on December 17 when they go visit Vanderbilt have almost become necessities if this team does not want to be in a position of having to win the SoCon’s automatic bid in March.  The Mocs are a solid team, led by Greg Pryor, Tre’ McLean, Justin Tuoyo and Casey Jones.  Each of those players, other than Jones who is still working his way back from a season-ending injury last year, has had at least one game with 20 or more points so far this season.  The Mocs have enough talent and depth to win their league, and picking up a victory against a solid Marshall team tonight will help send the message that the Arkansas State game (played without Jones) was an just an aberration.

The Hoops HD Report: December 5th

We start things off this week with a little early season Bracketology.  David Griggs posted his weekly bracket projections earlier in the day, and Chad along with the rest of the panel start things off by talking about how ridiculous some of the seedings were, including an oversight that placed TCU into the field twice.

After that, they review what was a very busy week in college basketball, including some of the big games from the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, and three top fifteen match-ups from this past weekend as Baylor and Gonzaga picked up big wins, and UCLA picked up what will most likely turn out to be the biggest road win of the season at Kentucky.  West Virginia also picked up a big road win at Virginia.

They also run through all of the major conferences and profile all the teams that are off to good starts, and discuss whether or not they are for real, or if their good starts merely reflect playing an easy schedule.  They also discuss the Mountain West and how it’s struggling, and preview this week’s big upcoming games.  All that, and much more!!

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

Bracket Projections: December 5th

For today’s Under the Radar Game of the Day and Other Highlighted Games, CLICK HERE.

NOTES ON THE BRACKET

Just to reiterate, this is a CHECKPOINT based on CURRENT MERIT, not a prediction of how I think things will look in March, or for that matter it’s not even a reflection of how good I think the teams actually are.  I look at what teams have done so far, I measure how much I think they have done up to this point will help them in March, and I rank them/seed them on that basis.  If a team that I believe is a solid top ten team has done nothing up to this point other than win home buy games, then they’re going to be seeded further down the bracket.

-Baylor’s profile is awesome.  They’ve beaten Louisville on a neutral floor, and have other notable wins against the likes of Xavier, Oregon, VCU, and Michigan State.  That’s pretty damn good.

-Indiana stays on the #1 line despite the loss at Fort Wayne.  In the grand scheme of things, that loss was a setback, but it was far less of a setback than it was beating Kansas and North Carolina was a boost.  I know the UNC win came at home, but it’s still a huge win.

-Winning on the road against other #1 or #2 caliber seeds is the kind of thing that makes a team a #1 or #2 caliber seed themselves.  Welcome to the #1 line UCLA!!

-Xavier, Duke, Virginia, Wisconsin, Oregon, Purdue, and Iowa State are all among teams that I think will end up seeded much better than where they currently are.  They’re capable of picking up the kinds of wins they need to earn good seeds.  They really just haven’t done it yet, and if they have, they don’t have quite as many as the teams in front of them.

-***IMPORTANT***  Chad made a mistake when he was editing this, and…well…I’ll spare you the details, but it was definitely not my fault!  TCU is in the bracket twice.  Oklahoma should be the other team that was left out.  At least I think it was them.  I’ll have to go back and check my notes.  I was moving the bracket around in order to make the First Four work, and when I moved TCU from one spot to another I forgot to delete them from the spot where they actually were.  But, it’s still not my fault  This is a professional site!!  We’re supposed to have people here who take the blame whenever there is a screwup.  That’s what our interns are for!!!

COMMENTS FROM CHAD

David considered Rutgers!  David considered Rutgers!  David considered Rutgers!  I don;t care what else is in this bracket because: DAVID CONSIDERED RUTGERS!!!!

But on a serious note . . . DAVID CONSIDERED RUTGERS!!!!!!!

Ok, now seriously on a serious note:

– Duke on the 5 line with only 1 loss, and that loss coming to Kansas makes no sense to me.  North Carolina got a 2 seed with a fairly equivalent loss (at Indiana).  I think the Blue Devils should at least be a 3 seed.

– If this is based on merit, then I would like an explanation of what Oregon is doing on the 6 line.  They may belong in a 6/11 game, but as the 11 seed.  This team has been a huge disappointment and has not proven themselves on the court yet.

– I would like a similar explanation for Pittsburgh.  The Panthers have not looked good and lost to Duquesne for the first time since color TV was invented (or maybe longer?).  They also lost to an SMU team that has shown me absolutely nothing so far this year.

– Arizona on the 10 line I agree with if this is based on merit.  But can someone please tell me what Oregon and Pittsburgh have on their resumes that Arizona does not?

– I know David is high on this TCU team, but having them in twice (West Region and Midwest Region) is a bit too much.  They are undefeated though, so I cannot argue with one of their inclusions.

– Syracuse belongs in this field.  I will just assume David meant to give them one of TCU’s spots.

– It is a minor point, but why is Iona in this bracket?  They lost yesterday and are just not that good of a team this year.  Monmouth should clearly be the MAAC representative.

– Finally, and most importantly: DAVID CONSIDERED RUTGERS!!!!!

COMMENTS FROM JOHN

– I believe the puppet is not a master when it comes to baiting people, but putting Cincinnati ahead of teams like Duke, Xavier and Virginia is insane with a loss against Rhode Island.

– Umm, never mind, they actually won a close game at Iowa State for a change. I’m going to start looking at cyanide pills.

– Now, I will attempt to add to Chad’s question and ask what Pitt is doing higher than a team like Virginia Tech. If the puppet is so wowed by road wins, why don’t they get more credit for winning at Michigan? I know USC got points for winning at Texas A&M, but exactly what puts them head and shoulders above Virginia Tech? As for Oregon, he must really be “high” on the win over Valpo.

– My initial thought on seeing UCF on the 10 line was to ask where the puppet is getting his medicinal marijuana. After looking at what they’ve been able to accomplish, now I have to ask not why they’re in the field, but why he would have Dayton above the Knights. I’m very underwhelmed at how the Atlantic 10 as a whole has looked this year and pleasantly surprised how teams in the American (read: Cincinnati, Temple and Central Florida) have fared.

– I also feel bad for Oklahoma State (not that I seriously expected them to be in this field) when you consider the manner in how they lost at Maryland over the weekend. One of their players tried to rebound a missed Maryland shot and inadvertently tipped it in the Terps’ bucket. The Cowboys ended up losing that game by a single point.

– Last and sure as hell not least, props to the puppet for looking out for the Team of the People on the 13 line!
