NCAA Tournament First Round Rundown: Friday, March 18

Not too many major surprises took place yesterday, but a few historical trends held form as it related to upsets.

For the sixth straight season, at least one First Four team moved on to the Round of 32. Wichita State defeated Arizona 65-55, but the Shockers dominated this game from the get-go. Only a late rally by Arizona made this game respectable; Wichita led by as many as 24 points in this contest. Their next opponent will be the Miami Hurricanes.

The 5-12 line was deadly again to bracket pools and teams this year. While Indiana had a surprisingly easy time with Chattanooga last night, Yale was not only able to beat Baylor, they were even able to beat the Bears on the glass as well. The Bulldogs will play Duke in the 2nd round. The bigger surprise here was Arkansas-Little Rock pulling off the upset against Purdue; they were down 13 against Purdue with just over 4 minutes to play in the game. However, the Trojans were able to reel off an 18-5 run to close out regulation. It took them 2 overtimes, but they move on to play Iowa State in the 2nd round in Denver.

Historically, the 9 seeds have a winning record against 8 seeds, but as our colleague Scott Schwartz of the Buffet noted, the March Madness Live app kept sending “Upset Alert” notifications for some reason. Colorado looked like they were in firm control against UConn in the first half of their game, but the Huskies kicked into high gear in the 2nd half and ended up defeating Colorado 74-67. Likewise, Butler was able to defeat Texas Tech 71-61 after trailing for a good part of the 1st half in their game.

Perhaps the best finish of the night came between USC and Providence – despite missing opportunity after opportunity to take the lead against the Trojans late in their game, the Friars’ Rodney Bullock finally capitalized with a wide-open layup off an inbounds play with 1.5 seconds remaining to give Providence their first NCAA Tournament victory since 1997 (the year they also advanced to the Elite 8).

It was a mixed bag for the Big East overall – the good news was that they finally got a couple of “upset” seed line wins thanks to Butler and Providence winning yesterday. However, Seton Hall looked flustered the entire game against Gonzaga. But the most disappointing conference was the Pac-12; USC, Colorado and Arizona all lost their openers (although Utah did beat Fresno State in Round 1). It was also a mixed bag for the Big 12 – Kansas and Iowa State both won their openers, but Texas Tech and Baylor lost.

On the other hand, the ACC had a nice day thanks to Duke’s survival against UNC-Wilmington and a trio of easy wins by Miami, Virginia and North Carolina. They will go for a perfect 7-for-7 when Notre Dame, Syracuse and Pittsburgh take the floor later on today.

(10) SYRACUSE vs. (7) DAYTON (12:15 PM, CBS) – This is a rematch from a Round of 32 game that took place in Buffalo 2 years ago; Dayton had pulled the upset and would eventually advance to the Elite 8. Syracuse will be looking for revenge against a Dayton team that won a share of the Atlantic 10 regular-season crown and the top seed in its conference tournament before losing to eventual A-10 tournament champion Saint Joseph’s.

(15) UNC-ASHEVILLE vs. (2) VILLANOVA (12:40 PM, TruTV) – The NCAA Tournament makes it debut at the Barclays Center with this appetizer of a 1st-round matchup. The Bulldogs earned their golden ticket with a win over Winthrop in the Big South championship, but are likely to be outmatched against a Villanova team playing about 100 miles away from its home base of Philadelphia.

(10) VCU vs. (7) OREGON STATE (1:30 PM, TNT) – For the first time in 26 seasons, the Oregon State Beavers will be in the NCAA Tournament after a solid nonconference schedule and a .500 season in the Pac-12. VCU did not get as many signature wins this season as they’ve gotten in years past under the Shaka Smart regime, but they are the far more experienced postseason team in this early matchup in Oklahoma City.

(13) HAWAI’I vs. (4) CALIFORNIA (2:00 PM, TBS) – I hope our readers in Hawai’i gave themselves an early wake-up call for this game; the game tips off at 8:00 AM Hawaii time. This is their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2002; their reward will be playing a California team that may arguably be the most talented team in the Pac-12 (albeit a young team as well). There is an added sense of urgency for the Rainbow Warriors since they will not be eligible to return to the NCAA Tournament next season.

(15) MIDDLE TENNESSEE ST. vs. (2) MICHIGAN STATE (2:45 PM, CBS) – The Blue Raiders had a quietly solid season out of Conference USA, but thanks to their C-USA title, their road to the NCAA Tournament didn’t involve a detour passing through Dayton this year. They will have their hands full against a Michigan State team that is one of the more trendy picks to win the national title this season.

(10) TEMPLE vs. (7) IOWA (3:10 PM, TruTV) – Given how both teams finished their seasons, you probably have a feeling that these seeds should be reversed for the Hawkeyes and the Owls. Iowa began the year looking like a #1 seed contender after a red-hot start to the Big 10 season, but the 2nd half of their schedule was marred by losses at Penn State and Ohio State. Temple won the outright regular-season title in the American, and this year they were not left standing at the altar on Selection Sunday. Most of the nation will be cheering for the Owls for a potential 2nd-round matchup between Villanova and Temple for the right to advance to the Sweet 16 in Philadelphia, err, Louisville.

(15) CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD vs. (2) OKLAHOMA (4:00 PM, TNT) – Lots of hometown fans in Oklahoma City will be clocking out early today to see the hometown Sooners take on a Roadrunners team that is making their NCAA Tournament debut. Bakersfield was able to take down WAC kingpin New Mexico State in the championship game on Saturday night with a game-winning shot with under a second remaining in regulation. They have a very tall order today against the Sooners, though.

(12) SOUTH DAKOTA STATE vs. (5) MARYLAND (4:30 PM, TBS) – Our colleague Jon Teitel warned us yesterday against picking Maryland to lose in Round 1 of the NCAA Tournament, although it is worth noting that one of their losses was in a 5-12 game against an underseeded College of Charleston team back in 1997. South Dakota State had beaten a couple of Power 5 minnows in Minnesota and TCU earlier in the season; beating Maryland will be a tougher chore. On the flip side, the highest seeded team that Maryland beat away from home this season? The 7th-seeded Wisconsin Badgers. Segue to…

(10) PITTSBURGH vs. (7) WISCONSIN (6:50 PM, TNT) – This is probably one out of 3 feature games in the 1st round that has been deemed worthy of primetime. Pitt has shown flashes of potential with wins at Notre Dame, at home against Duke and a 3-game sweep of Syracuse. However, Wisconsin did play their best basketball in late January and February that included wins against Michigan State, Indiana and at Maryland. March has not been as kind – they lost their regular-season finale at Purdue and had a surprising loss to Nebraska in the Big 10 tournament.

(14) STEPHEN F. AUSTIN vs. (3) WEST VIRGINIA (7:10 PM, CBS) – Another trendy upset pick comes in the form of SFA – their coach Brad Underwood was also a former assistant coach for current Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins. Will West Virginia pay the price for playing an SFA team that may well be underseeded?

(14) WISCONSIN-GREEN BAY vs. (3) TEXAS A&M (7:20 PM, TBS) -The Phoenix finally made their long-awaited return to the NCAA Tournament after a pair of near-misses in the Horizon for the past 2 seasons under former head coach Brian Wardle. Their reward is a game with a Texas A&M team that not only won a share of the SEC regular-season title, but also had some noteworthy wins against Kentucky, Iowa State and Baylor.

(16) HOLY CROSS vs. (1) OREGON (7:27 PM, TruTV) – With 4 straight road wins in the Patriot League Championship and a win against Southern in the First Four in Dayton, the Crusaders earned a spot in the Field of 64. Their reward is a cross-country flight and a game against an Oregon team that swept the Pac-12 regular season and tournament championships for the first time in its program history. And this was the deepest top-to-bottom conference that the Pac-12 has had.

(15) WEBER STATE vs. (2) XAVIER (9:20 PM, TNT) – Weber State has a history of pulling off 1st-round upsets (ask North Carolina in 1999 and Michigan State in 1995), so the Musketeers best not take the Wildcats lightly in this game. However, Weber State hasn’t played a program anywhere close to the caliber of Xavier all season long; the toughest team they’ve played is South Dakota State (which was actually a home-and-home that both teams split during the regular season).

(11) MICHIGAN vs. (6) NOTRE DAME (9:40 PM, CBS) – This is the spotlight game of the day, at least from a brand-name perspective. Michigan limped their way through the 2nd half of their season, but thanks to wins over Indiana in the Big 10 tournament and a win against Tulsa in the First Four, the Wolverines get to face a Notre Dame team that will look to match or exceed their run to the Elite 8 last season.

(11) NORTHERN IOWA vs. (6) TEXAS (9:50 PM, TBS) – While our staff at HoopsHD did not expect Northern Iowa to make a return trip to the NCAA Tournament this season, the Panthers had other ideas during the season. They already had a pair of signature wins against North Carolina and Iowa State in the noncon, and the game-winner by Wes Washpun to win the Missouri Valley Conference tournament was icing on the cake. Texas has also shown the ability to knock off protected seed caliber teams this season, home and away.

(9) CINCINNATI vs. (8) SAINT JOSEPH’S (9:57 PM, TruTV) – In years past, it would have been unimaginable to have both Cincinnati and Xavier games running simultaneously in the 1st round, but is now much more doable in the CBS/Turner era. The Hawks have the star power in this game in DeAndre Bembry and Isaiah Miles, but the Bearcats bring a very stingy defense to the table. How will UC respond after the mother of all heartbreaks against UConn last week?

Under The Radar Postseason News, Notes and Highlighted Games – Friday, March 18

While the NCAA Tournament kicked off in earnest last night, there were still 4 other teams that were in action last night – Valparaiso, Florida State, Grand Canyon and Jackson State.

– Since the CIT only fielded 26 out of a possible 32 teams this year, this meant that of the 13 first-round winners, 3 teams would receive byes into the quarterfinal round. We learned that those three teams were Texas-Arlington, UC-Irvine and Columbia.

– In the NIT last night, Valpo defeated Florida State 81-69. Alec Peters led the way for the Crusaders with 26 points and 9 rebounds. Valpo also tied a pair of school records with 28 wins in their season and 2 postseason wins; they will host either Georgia or St. Mary’s on Tuesday.

– The Team of the People won again at home – this time over Jackson State 64-54. Despite trailing by 6 at halftime, the Lopes were led by Josh Braun’s 18 points and Grandy Glaze’s 11 rebounds. Their next opponent has yet to be determined.

– Two more head coaches were added to the coaching change carousel – Western Kentucky’s Ray Harper and Wright State’s Billy Donlon. Donlon is the bigger surprise here – Wright State has had some solid seasons in the Horizon League under his watch, but they have failed in 3 tries to get the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

NIT

(3) VIRGINIA TECH AT (2) BYU (9:30 PM, ESPNU) – Only one game is scheduled for tonight – Virginia Tech is coming off of an overtime nailbiter against Princeton; BYU had a relatively easier win at home against UAB. Virginia Tech hasn’t been nearly as formidable away from home this season, although they still managed to win a notable road game at Georgia Tech earlier in the season.

Bracket Tactics: HoopsHD gives you some tips to surviving and advancing

The best day of the year is finally here!  This is why we ponder the impact of high-school All-Americans, the importance of having a smart veteran coach, and exactly how many different “Wildcats” can make the Final 4.  For those of you who need some last-minute bracket advice grounded in historical facts/trends, see below.  For the rest of you, enjoy the madness!!

bracket

TIP #1: No team that lost its opening game in its conference tournament has ever gone on to win the NCAA title that same year.
STRATEGY: The extra few days of rest have not proven helpful so take a long hard look at Indiana before penciling them in as your champ.

TIP #2: Since 1979 only 2 national champions did not have a McDonald’s All-American on their roster (2002 Maryland and 2014 UConn).
STRATEGY: A coach who cannot recruit the best high school players usually fails to win it all so beware of picking Virginia to go all the way.

TIP #3: The last person to win a title in his 1st year as head coach at a school was Tubby Smith at Kentucky in 1998.
STRATEGY: History is not on the side of Iowa State (Steve Prohm) or Texas (Shaka Smart).

TIP #4: Since 1991 24 of 25 champs have come from a power-conference (except for UConn in 2014): ACC (9), SEC (6), Big East (5), Pac-12 (2), Big 12 (1), Big 10 (1).
STRATEGY: You might want to think twice before picking anyone from the A-10 or MVC to win it all.

TIP #5: Only 3 coaches with 4 or fewer prior tournament appearances have won the title since 1985 (Steve Fisher/Tom Izzo/Kevin Ollie).
STRATEGY: Teams like Cal (Cuonzo Martin has 1 prior tourney appearance) and Utah (Larry Krystkowiak has 3 prior tourney appearances) might need a little more seasoning before they can win it all.

TIP #6: Each champ since 2002 had a strength of schedule that was among the top-75 in the nation.
STRATEGY: You have to play the best to learn how to beat the best so stay away from Cincinnati (#77) and Dayton (#92).

TIP #7: Only 3 teams have won an NCAA title after not being in the tournament the previous year (1986 Louisville/2003 Syracuse/2014 UConn).
STRATEGY: Miami (2015 NIT) and Texas A&M (2015 NIT) are finally ready for prime-time but not quite ready to win a title.

TIP #8: There are 6 active coaches who have won at least 67% of their NCAA tournament games (minimum 5 appearances).
STRATEGY: Do not expect Mike Krzyzewski (77.2 W/L%) or Tom Izzo (73 W/L%) to be catching an early flight home.

TIP #9: There are 3 teams who have won at least 90% of their games in the round of 64 (minimum 5 games).
STRATEGY: Kansas (30-2) Maryland (18-2), and North Carolina (27-1) are almost automatic.

TIP #10: There are 8 teams who have won at least 75% of their games in the round of 32 (minimum 5 games).
STRATEGY: Arizona (17-4) is looking good vs. the Miami-Buffalo winner if they can get by Wichita State, but the Indiana-Chattanooga winner better pray for a miracle if they face Kentucky (25-6).

TIP #11: There are 4 teams who have won at least 80% of their Sweet 16 games (minimum 5 games).
STRATEGY: Oregon State (5-1) and Providence (4-1) have each won at least 80% of their Sweet 16 games, so Indiana/Kentucky/Texas/Texas A&M should not rest on their higher-seeded laurels.

TIP #12: There are 8 teams who have won at least 70% of their Elite 8 games (minimum 5 games).
STRATEGY: Duke has won 16 of its 20 Elite 8 games (80%) so keep an eye on them if they can make it to the 2nd Sunday.

TIP #13: There are 5 teams who have won at least 70% of their Final 4 games (minimum 5 games).
STRATEGY: Indiana is 6-2 in the Final 4 so if you pick them to survive the East Region then you might want to pick them to get all the way to the title game.

TIP #14: There are 9 teams who have won at least 80% of their NCAA tournament games in their home state (minimum 5 games).
STRATEGY: You should bank on North Carolina (31-1 in the state of NC) winning in Raleigh.

TIP #15: There are 11 teams who are undefeated in their NCAA tournament games in a specific state (minimum 5 games).
STRATEGY: Duke would have preferred to grab a cheesesteak in Philly (6-0 in the state of PA) but Oregon cannot wait to check out Disneyland in Anaheim (6-0 in the state of CA).

TIP #16: There are 9 teams who have won at least 67% of their NCAA tournament games as an at-large team (minimum 5 games).
STRATEGY: Even though Michigan did not win the Big 10 tourney they have a good track record when they do not get an automatic bid (38-16).

NCAA Tournament First Round Rundown: Thursday March 17th

Click here for Jon Teitel’s latest interview with Colorado PG Dominique Collier

Also click here for John Stalica’s recap and preview of last night’s other postseason games – including Grand Canyon’s game tonight!

Here it is folks – the NCAA Tournament finally begins in earnest today. We have all the game times and networks listed below; you can also click here to view live streams of all the games throughout the day. I haven’t seen this year’s Boss Button yet, but I’m sure that it will be able to fool simpletons like Chad and John into thinking that their employees are actually working today instead of watching these thrilling matchups.

Not too many great games were offered in Dayton, but we did get one decent appetizer between Tulsa and Michigan. Despite facing a pro-Buckeye crowd in Dayton last night, Zak Irvin hit a go-ahead 3 pointer that finally pushed Michigan ahead for good and ensures that they will play Notre Dame in the first round in Brooklyn on Friday.

#13 UNC WILMINGTON VS #4 DUKE (12:15 PM, CBS).  UNC Wilmington is below the sightline of most of the nation, but they are a very good team who won multiple games that, while not against tournament teams, were still tough to win.  At the same time, Duke has not always been the strongest team away from home.  They had one big road win at UNC, but outside of that they really haven’t won many games away from Cameron against teams that are as good as I think this UNCW team is.

#9 BUTLER VS #8 TEXAS TECH (12:40 PM, TruTV).  Both teams had good seasons, and both should be even better in the years to come.  It’s an evenly matched game between two very battle tested teams that I think could go either way.

#9 CONNECTICUT VS #8 COLORADO (1:30 PM, TNT).  I really like how UConn was playing at the end of the year.  They’ve had some big ups and downs, but at the end they appeared to be pretty solid.  Colorado is strong as well, but struggled away from home.  Granted the games they played away form home were typically against very good teams.

#13 IONA VS #4 IOWA STATE (2:00 PM, TBS).  Iona loves to push the pace and they can be very frustrating and build big leads in a hurry with their transition game.  Iowa State better be prepared for that and not overlook them.

#12 YALE VS #5 BAYLOR (app. 2:45 PM, CBS).  I like both these teams and a Yale upset wouldn’t shock me, but Baylor looked good throughout most of conference play in an absolutely brutal conference.  I know they ended the season losing three of four, but all of three losses were close games to top ten teams.

#16 HAMPTON VS #1 VIRGINIA (app. 3:10 PM, TruTV).  I guess this is as intriguing as a 1 v 16 game can get, but it still appears to be a huge mismatch.  Virginia is a legit contender to win it all and they should roll in this game.

#16 AUSTIN PEAY VS #1 KANSAS (app. 4:00 PM, TNT).  Austin Peay had an exciting run through their conference tournament, whereas Kansas pretty much stomped all over their conference.  The Govs weren’t even close to being the best team in their league for most of the season, which is why they’re on the #16 line.  Kansas should roll.

#12 LITTLE ROCK VS #5 PURDUE (app. 4:30 PM, TBS).  I really like this Little Rock team.  They’re below the sightline, but they’re really good.  They’re not as good as Purdue, but they’re certainly good enough to beat Purdue if the Boilers overlook them and/or don’t take them seriously.  Now, having said that, I thought Purdue played really well all throughout the Big Ten Tournament.  Prior to that I had questions about them not as a tournament team, but as a team that could do well in the tournament.  I now think that htey can.

#14 BUFFALO VS #3 MIAMI FL (6:50 PM, TNT).  Miami has had a really good year, but they’ve been known to take a nap every now and then.  Buffalo is good enough to beat Miami if Miami is asleep, but other than that the Canes should get this one.

#12 CHATTANOOGA VS #5 INDIANA (7:10 PM, CBS).  Indiana went out early in their conference tournament and most would take that as an indicator that they’re not going to do well in the NCAAs, but prior to that they had been playing really well.  I’ve liked this Chattanooga team all year, and I still think they’re good enough to pull the upset, but I’m not going to go so far as to predict it.  The Mocs are a deep team that likes to run, and IU has been known to struggle defensively, though, so it’s not an impossibility.

#16 FLORIDA GULF COAST VS #1 NORTH CAROLINA (7:20 PM, TBS).  UNC had their struggles away from home during the year, but considering that they just won the ACC Tournament, I no longer think of them as a team that’s vulnerable away from home.  FGCU won their First Four game in a blowout.  Today, they will likely be on the receiving end of a blowout.

#14 FRESNO STATE VS #3 UTAH (7:27 PM, TruTV).  I really like this Fresno State team and I think they have a lot of momentum coming into this and that their program is on the right track.  I just don’t think they have quite enough to knock off what I believe is a very good Utah team.  I wouldn’t call an upset an impossibility, but it isn’t likely.

#11 WICHITA STATE VS #6 ARIZONA (app. 9:20 PM, TNT).  I think both teams are capable of playing better than what their paper indicates.  This is a Wichita team that was in the Sweet Sixteen just a year ago and has most of that team back, so they are very experienced.  If they were to knock off Arizona most would call it an upset, but in reality both teams are very evenly matched.

#13 STONY BROOK VS #4 KENTUCKY (app. 9:40 PM, CBS).  Stony Brook is finally in the NCAA Tournament.  They’re a good team that I think is capable of pulling the upset in a game like this if the match up was right.  Unfortunately for them, I don’t think this match up is right.  Kentucky has struggled on the road against some really bad teams throughout the season, but they just won the SEC Tournament and beat some good teams along the way.  Stony Brook may put up more of a fight than many are expecting, but I don’t think they go full throttle and pull the upset.

#9 PROVIDENCE VS #8 USC (app. 9:50 PM, TBS).  USC has mostly been a home court hero, but they’ve had a very good season overall.  Providence has been up and down all year, but their big wins have shown that their ceiling is extremely high.  Like most 8v9 games, this one is a bit of a wild card.

#11 GONZAGA VS #6 SETON HALL (app. 9:57 PM, TruTV).  I don’t understand how a team can beat two top ten teams away from home in the final week of the season, yet still end up on the #6 line.  But, that’s what happened to Seton Hall.  I think Gonzaga isn’t good enough to be in without the automatic bid, and I don’t see them stepping up on a team that’s looking like a protected seed right now.

Under The Radar Postseason News, Notes and Highlighted Games – Thursday, March 17

Before we get to the main course of NCAA Tournament action, let’s take a look at the other three postseason tournaments that are underway:

– Last night’s stunner took place in Olean between St. Bonaventure and Wagner – the Seahawks began the game by taking a 26-10 lead on the road. The Bonnies were able to cut the lead to 2 late in the 2nd half, but Romone Saunders hit a crushing 3 on the next possession for Wagner and they were able to pull off the biggest upset of the NIT this season. Wagner’s reward will be a road trip to Creighton on Saturday at noon (EDT).

– There were a pair of other close games in the NIT last night – after Hofstra tied their game at GW with 13 seconds remaining in regulation, Alex Mitola would hit a game-winner 9 seconds later to give the Colonials an 82-80 victory. Princeton also had a 2-point lead in regulation against Virginia Tech, but the Hokies’ Seth Allen hit a pair of free throws with 32 seconds remaining to tie the game and force OT after Princeton was unable to cash in on their final possession of regulation. Jalen Hudson had a decisive 3-point play to give Virginia Tech an 86-81 overtime victory.

– The misery continues for North Dakota – despite a CIT-high 5 appearances in the tournament, they are still winless thanks to UC-Irvine’s 89-86 win in OT last night. The other thrilling game of the night came between UT-Martin and Central Michigan; the Skyhawks were able to keep Central Michigan scoreless for the final 2:57 of this game. Alex-Anderson hit the go-ahead 3-pointer for UT-Martin; they would go on to win 76-73.

– Last night was a very exciting game if you love offense between Nebraska-Omaha and Duquesne. It was a rarity indeed for the Mavericks – they ended up scoring 80 points in the 2nd half against Duquesne, yet they still lost 120-112 to the Dukes. Both teams exceeded the previous CBI record of 102 points that Creighton posted in 2011 in a win against Davidson. Another exciting finish came between Albany and Ohio – after Albany’s Evan Singletary hit a 3 near the end of regulation to send the game to OT, Treg Setty scored 9 of his game-high 30 points to ensure that Ohio would move on to the 2nd round of the CBI.

– Despite being down by 6 at the half, UNC-Greensboro managed to secure their first-ever postseason victory with a 69-65 victory over Houston Baptist. In another game where one set of Catamounts was assured to win, Vermont defeated Western Carolina 79-74.

NIT

(4) FLORIDA STATE AT (1) VALPARAISO – Both teams are on a quick turnaround after a pair of wins on Tuesday night. Valpo had a close game with Texas Southern for about a half, but Alec Peters and Keith Carter led the Crusaders to an 11-point win at home. Florida State gradually pulled away from Davidson after dominating the Wildcats in the paint (48 points to 24) and on the boards (44-28). The winner will play either Georgia or St. Mary’s for the right to advance to Madison Square Garden.

CIT (click on the CIT link for a live stream)

JACKSON STATE AT GRAND CANYON (10:00 PM) – Both the Tigers and the Lopes won a pair of close games on Monday night, and there will be a quick turnaround for this 2nd round game between Jackson State and the Team of the People. Don’t forget to stream this game along with the other 4 NCAA Tournament games going on tonight as well!

Tourney Talk: HoopsHD interviews Colorado SO PG Dominique Collier

Colorado trailed Arizona by 20 PTS early in the 2nd half of last Thursday’s Pac-12 tourney quarterfinals and most Wildcat fans were already looking ahead to facing Oregon in the semifinals…until George King made a 3-PT shot with 2 seconds left that almost capped off an improbable comeback, but Arizona held on for the 4-PT win.  The Buffaloes’ 22-11 record and several quality wins were enough for them to receive an at-large bid and a #8-seed to this week’s NCAA tournament, where they will face Connecticut in Des Moines on Thursday.  Earlier today HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to speak with Dominique Collier about the quality of the Pac-12 and his ability to make shots from behind the arc.

collier

You grew up in Denver: what made you choose the Buffaloes? The environment of Boulder and the coaches. When I came on my visit I also bonded with the team really well.

You played in 30 games as a freshman: how were you able to come in and contribute right from the start? I tried to be aggressive and do what the coaches asked me to do when I was out there. I tried to be confident and play my game.

Last March you made it to the CBI quarterfinals before scoring 11 PTS in a loss to Seattle: what did you learn from that experience that you think will help you in the postseason this year? We learned that every team is good this time of year and the level of play increases a lot because it is win or go home. Our leader last year (Askia Booker) did not play so we needed a lot of other guys to step up in his absence.

You play for Coach Tad Boyle: what makes him such a good coach, and what is the most important thing that you have ever learned from him? He pays attention to detail and tells us to believe in our game. All of the coaches believe in us but to hear that from Coach Boyle in meetings really helps.

You beat several good teams in conference play this season including Oregon/Cal/Arizona: how good is your conference, and which of these teams impressed you the most? Everyone in the conference is really good, even last-place Washington State (the Cougars’ 2 losses to Colorado this year were by a combined 12 PTS). I think that our conference is really underrated nationally but having so many teams in the NCAA tourney will open people’s eyes.

You shot 45.5 3P% this season: what is your secret for making shots from behind the arc? I worked a lot in the off-season on my shooting and changed my technique to keep my elbow up and tweak my wrist.

Your team is #3 in the nation in REB: how are you able to dominate on the boards? We emphasize that a lot in practice. We have a rule that if you do not box out then you have to run so we take a lot of pride in it. We have big guys in the post and big guys on the wing who all like to rebound.

Josh Scott is the only senior among your top-7 scorers: do you feel that your team is built to win right now or that you are going to be even better next year? I feel that we are built to win right now. Josh is our best player and we look to get him touches every possession, but I think we will be good next year even though Josh is gone. He is as good a player as we have ever had here.

1 of your AAU teammates was Conner Frankamp, who scored 8 PTS for Wichita State on Tuesday in their 20-PT win over Vanderbilt in the 1st Four: how good a player was he back in the day, and what advice do you have for him when the Shockers face Arizona on Thursday? He can really shoot the ball, which made my job a whole lot easier as a PG because I got a lot of assists by passing him the ball. I would tell him to box out and be tough on the boards because Arizona is 1 of the best rebounding teams in our league.

You ended up with a #8-seed and will play UConn on Thursday in Des Moines: do you think you deserved a higher seed, and how are you preparing to face the Huskies? I did not mind the seeding. We have spent the past couple of days preparing for UConn and are looking forward to the matchup and the challenge.
