Hoops HD Mock Committee Report – Thursday, March 10

Click here for Jon Teitel’s latest bracket projection in which he guesses the actual committee’s bracket through games of Thursday, March 10

Tonight was the first night that our Hoops HD Selection Committee convened; prior to our meeting last night, we had named 27 teams on the first ballot to the at-large field. When we began our meeting tonight, our first order of business was to take a look at the Under Consideration board and make motions to remove teams that were not deemed worthy of at-large inclusion. 15 teams were scrubbed off of the Under Consideration board; this also includes 7 teams that won their conferences in the regular season but failed to win their conference tournament. The real stunner today was the UAB; they lost their Conference USA Tournament opener against Western Kentucky in Birmingham. These teams are still eligible for the NIT, CBI, CIT or Vegas 16.

We also named Chicago State as our Centenary Winner for 2016; they were deemed as the worst team in all of Division I this season. However, their prize for winning the award is their inclusion to the Under Consideration board; they will remain there for the duration of our Selection Committee meetings.

Most importantly, we began debating the merits of teams on the Under Consideration board and began voting teams into the At-Large field. For the first vote, each committee member voted for their own Top 8 teams to be included in the at-large discussion. The top 8 vote-getters were then seeded 1 through 8 by our Committee. The top 4 teams in the first wave of balloting were Wisconsin (they were voted in before their loss to Nebraska), Providence, Colorado and Butler. The bottom 4 vote-getters carried over and then each member of our committee added 4 more teams to be considered. Once again, the teams were then ranked 1 through 8. This time, the top 4 vote-getters were USC, Wichita State, Oregon State and Pittsburgh. Barring any votes to remove these teams from the at-large board, the aforementioned 8 teams will be part of the Committee’s NCAA Tournament field. The remaining 4 “carry-overs” will be considered in the next wave of voting that will take place tomorrow night.

There was one at-large spot that was not filled tonight, but we also learned that 4 more at-large spots will open up because the Big 12, ACC, Big East and Pac-12 champs will come off of the At-Large board and move over to the Automatic Bids column. It is also possible that 4 more at-large spots will open up pending the outcomes of the SEC, Big 10, Atlantic 10 and American conference tournaments. If you look at the Under Consideration board, teams highlighted in orange have completed play in the regular season. Teams not highlighted are still playing in their conference tournaments and therefore have the opportunity to further enhance their profiles. You can click below to view the results through Day 1:

3-10-16-2016-Selection-Committee-Board

Tomorrow, we will fill the remaining at-large spots that are eligible to be filled, although it is possible that a spot may be left open depending on Saturday and Sunday’s results. We will also begin the process of seeding the top 8 seed lines (32 teams total).

Championship Week Video Notebook: Thursday, March 10th

Don’t miss Jon Teitel’s All-Conference Awards!!!  CLICK HERE.

The Pac Twelve, Big Twelve, Big Ten, and SEC got underway on Wednesday, as well as the second round of the ACC.  The biggest upset was TCU’s win over Texas Tech.  Duke also got a scare from NC State, and Pittsburgh beat Syracuse in a back-and-forth game that may end up knocking the Orange out of the field.

The Atlantic Ten, Mountain West, Conference USA, MEAC, SWAC, and Southland tournaments were also in action in their early rounds.  The panel recaps all of the action from Wednesday, and previews the busiest day of Championship Week, which is the Thursday before Selection Sunday.

The Hoops HD Selection Committee also began their selection process tonight.  We are not trying to guess the actual NCAA Selection Committee, but we have ten people who are going through the exact same process in selecting, seeding, and bracketing the teams, and we are doing it at the same pace and time that they are.  We had our initial votes tonight on who should be in and who should be under consideration, and we show you that as well.

Hoops HD Mock Committee Report – Wednesday, March 9

Click here for Jon Teitel’s interview with UNC-Asheville head coach Nick McDevitt; also click here for Jon’s bracket projection for games played through Tuesday.

All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are on the eve of convening our annual HoopsHD NCAA Mock Selection Committee. The first ballots for at-large teams and Under Consideration have been submitted to our committee chairman Chad Sherwood – without further ado, here are the results:

3-9-16-2016-Selection-Committee-Board

As you can see, 27 out of a possible 36 teams received 8 out of 10 votes from our committee members to be in the NCAA Tournament regardless of what happens this weekend. Motions can still be made to remove a team from At-Large to Under Consideration, but it takes 8 out of 10 votes for this to happen. (If you’re Texas Tech, don’t sweat it – I don’t think you’re getting voted down.) 33 more teams received at least 3 votes from Committee members; they have been added to the Under Consideration board. Seven teams that were already regular-season champions were included in the first ballot and promoted up to the At-Large column. In short, 33 teams plus the 23 remaining regular-season conference champions will be competing for the remaining 9 at-large spots plus any other at-large spots that open up as teams earn automatic bids into the NCAA Tournament. There are a minimum number of 9 at-large bids to be filled; the maximum number of at-large bids to be filled is 17 when you account for teams winning the ACC, Big East, Big 12, Pac 12, Big 10, SEC, American, and Atlantic 10 Conferences.

Tomorrow night, we will also be voting on the annual Centenary Award (click here for the background story) – the winner is automatically added to the Under Consideration board and will remain there for the duration of the selection process. We will also begin voting for the 9 remaining at-large spots tomorrow night as well (and perhaps a spot guaranteed to open up in a major conference) – tune in then to see who our Committee has voted into the field.

Tourney Talk: HoopsHD interviews UNC Asheville coach Nick McDevitt

CLICK HERE for Jon Teitel’s most recent Bracketology

CLICK HERE for our most recent Championship Week Video Notebook

Coach Nick McDevitt has been a Bulldog for almost 2 decades, having arrive on campus to begin life as a freshman back in the late 1990s.  On Sunday he became the 1st UNC Asheville alum to coach the school to the NCAA tourney by overcoming a 9-PT halftime deficit and getting a 9-PT win over Winthrop in the Big South tourney title game to earn an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA tournament for the 1st time since 2012. Earlier today HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to speak with Coach McDevitt about winning without many seniors and guarding the arc.

mcdevitt

You played basketball at UNC-Asheville and your father/uncle/sister are also alumni: what does it mean to you and to you family to be the 1st alum to take the Bulldogs to the NCAA tourney? Anytime you get to experience the NCAA tourney it is a special time, both for myself as well as 2 of the guys on my staff who are also alums.

During your career you were twice named to the Big South All-Academic team and were also named to the Dean’s List 4 different times: how much importance do you place on academics? A lot of what we do is certainly about academics, and we stress the importance of being a student and an athlete…in that order. It is important to get a degree but also to get an education as well.

Your team finished 15-16 last year: how were you able to turn things around this year? We just continued to grow: we did a nice job of playing hard and playing together. They are a fun bunch who enjoys the work that it takes to get better both as individuals and as a team.

You played several power-conference teams this season including Tennessee/Texas A&M/Georgetown: which of these teams impressed you the most? Texas A&M has a combination of size and skill that is very good. We were still trying to figure out who we were when we played them early on (and lost by 28 PTS).

On Sunday SG Dwayne Sutton scored 25 PTS in a 9-PT win over Winthrop to clinch the 2016 Big South tourney title: how were you able to overcome a 9-PT halftime deficit, and how on earth did a freshman end up as the conference tourney MVP? We needed to get more aggressive in the 2nd half. Winthrop has some good rim-protectors which made us a little passive in the 1st half and we settled for jump shots. At halftime we stressed to our players that they had to play in the paint and get on the glass, and it helped us get the win.

SF Will Weeks missed most of the past 2 years due to a knee injury: how happy are you for him to finally make it to the postseason? He has put in an awful lot of hard work. He had a bad injury a couple of years ago which was a big setback both to him and our team, so to see him able to play well and be rewarded by getting to play in the tourney makes me really happy for him.

You only have 2 seniors on the roster: do you think this team is ready to win now or do you think that they are not going to peak for another year or 2? That will depend on the work we are able to put in going forward and not being complacent about the success we have had so far. We cannot stay stagnant in the years ahead as our current players continue to mature: we need to prove our skill level and our strength.

Your 28.4 3P% allowed is #1 in the entire nation: what is the secret to guarding the 3-PT line? At times we have similar-sized players on the floor which allows us to switch on ball-screens. Some teams get easy shots from their stretch 4s via a pick-and-pop, but when you have 6’5” guards like we do it gives you a lot of length on the perimeter. Our players are very versatile so we can also play multiple kinds of zone defenses.

What kind of seed do you think you deserve, and what kind of seed do you think you will get? I really do not know for sure: we will go wherever they tell us to go and play whoever they tell us to play. I imagine that we will be a 15 or 16 seed and we will just try to advance to the next round.
