Under the Radar Game of the Day – Wednesday, February 24: Norfolk State at Morgan State

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Norfolk State at Morgan State, 7:00 PM Eastern, free streaming at morganstatebears.com

For Jon Teitel’s recap of his visit to Grand Canyon University, CLICK HERE.

The Under the Radar Game of the Day heads to the MEAC tonight for a contest involving one of three teams currently locked in a battle for  the regular season championship and top seed in the conference tournament.  Entering play tonight, Hampton is on top of the standings at 11-2, with South Carolina State half a game back at 11-3 and Norfolk State a full game back at 10-3.  The regular season title has a very good chance to come down to next Thursday night’s finale when Hampton will be in Norfolk to take on the Spartans.  However, before that potential title matchup can be set, both teams have some work to do, including Norfolk State on the road tonight in Baltimore to take on Todd Bozeman’s Morgan State Bears.

Norfolk State currently sits at 14-14 overall, one of only three teams in the MEAC (along with Hampton and SC State) at or above .500 overall.  The Spartans have won 8 of their last 10 games and will be looking to continue their winning ways tonight.  They are led by three seniors, Jeff Short, D’Shon Taylor and Charles Oliver.  Short led the way last time out, in a win over Coppin State, with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals.  Also keep an eye on sophomore Jordan Butler, who was the team’s top player in a home win over Morgan State back on February 13, scoring 13 points while pulling down 9 rebounds and blocking 7 shots.  If the Spartans can win tonight, and Monday at home against Howard, they may be in a position to claim the regular season title next week.  And with the conference tournament being held in Norfolk again this season, an NCAA Tournament bid is also well within their grasp.

Morgan State, unlike Norfolk State, does not appear to be a serious contender for the postseason, though history has shown us that the MEAC Tournament is always ripe for a surprise champion from a lower seed.  The Bears enter play tonight at 6-20 overall and 4-9 in MEAC play, a record that places them tied with Florida A&M for last place.  FAMU is ineligible for the MEAC tournament due to their APR, thus placing the Bears in the 12 seed slot at the moment.  The good news for Morgan State is that they are also only one game out of 7th place!  Seven teams currently stand within one game of each other at the bottom of the MEAC standings, an incredible logjam that will need to be sorted out in the next week.  The Bears are led by Cedric Blossom, who has scored 20 points in each of his last two games, and led both teams in their earlier matchup, with career highs in points (28) and rebounds (15) in the loss.  The Bears are at home tonight, and if Blossom can be anywhere close to how good he was back on February 13, the upset is definitely possible.

The Grandest Canyon: HoopsHD visits the Lopes

Gameday program

Some of the perks of being in Phoenix in February include the record-high 90-degree weather, spending some quality uncle time with my niece/nephew, and getting to visit some friends who I have not see in ages. 1 of those friends happens to work at Grand Canyon University, so last Thursday I got to join her in the 3rd row behind the home team bench for my 1st-ever game at GCU Arena. The Lopes’ 22-4 record was among the best in the nation and they were feeling confident about facing a sub-.500 UMKC team.

I arrived to find a statue of an antelope greeting me by the entrance to the campus…followed by a ton of fans who beat me there and forced me to park on the top level of the parking garage adjacent to the arena. The pregame atmosphere was great and rivaled that of most D-1 programs: band behind the basket, cheerleaders on the court, fans in the Havocs student section passing a huge banner over their heads while wearing brightly colored shirts for “Neon Night”, player intros with loud music and spotlights, a mascot that actually looked like an antelope, etc. The 1 thing that I had never seen before was a pregame prayer, but as GCU is a private Christian university I suppose that is par for the course. Growing up in Phoenix I was a huge Suns fan, so to be sitting only a few feet behind current GCU head coach/former Suns All-Star Dan Majerle was quite a treat.

The most athletic feat of the night was actually the halftime entertainment: a guy who balanced himself on 1 hand! I left a little early in the 2nd half to beat the 6000 fans who parked in the garage whose cars were parked closer to the exit than mine was, but I did not jinx the home team as they won by double-digits thanks to 26 PTS from Joshua Braun and a double-double from Grandy Glaze (my new favorite college basketball name). The Lopes will have a hard time winning out due to 1 of the best non-conference games remaining in the nation looming next week (at 22-4 St. Mary’s on March 1st), but even if they can catch New Mexico State to win the WAC regular season title they are ineligible for the WAC tourney/NCAA tourney/NIT. However, if you think anyone is looking forward to playing a possible-25-win GCU team in the CIT/CBI next month, think again. It was a great evening of basketball and once the Lopes become eligible for postseason play in the spring of 2018, watch out!

NEWS AND NOTES

For our most recent Hoops HD Report, where we are joined by a full panel that includes Warren Nolan – CLICK HERE

-For Chad Sherwood’s Under the Radar Game of the Day between Ball State and Toledo, which has implications for the MAC Tournament – CLICK HERE

-Miami FL held on to beat Virginia in an exciting game that went back and fourth.  I was really starting to like Virginia as a #1 seed caliber team, and think that this was the kind of road game that could have helped cement it.  They still have a shot at it, but it’ll require a Herculean type of finish.

-West Virginia picked up a big home win against an Iowa State team that still looks like a protected seed, but could have really used that win to help cement it.

-Texas got it done at K State, but barely.  I must admit that it was more of a struggle for them than I thought it would be.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-ALABAMA AT KENTUCKY (SEC).  Alabama is coming off a fairly damaging loss, but we’ve still got them inside our bubble.  A win today would certainly help.  Kentucky isn’t coming off of a damaging loss by any means, but it is understandably a frustrating loss, so they’re looking to rebound as well.

-LSU AT ARKANSAS (SEC).  LSU is on the wrong side of the bubble, and they’ll need a strong and impressive finish to get on the right side of it.  This is the kind of game they have to be able to win.  Arkansas has been strong at home, but they’re still nowhere close to a tournament caliber team.

-VANDERBILT AT FLORIDA (SEC).  Florida should cruise to a bid so long as they hold serve and win the games they’re supposed to win.

-TEMPLE AT TULSA (American).  This is suddenly a hugely important game between two bubble teams.  Every game has a pivotal feel if you’re a bubble team.  That’s especially true if you’re playing another bubble team.

-KANSAS AT BAYLOR (Big Twelve).  Right now Kansas is looking like a #1 seed, and may end up getting the overall #1 seed.  A road win tonight would sure help that cause.  Baylor is safely in the field and depending how strong they finish they could end up as a protected seed.  Whether or not they’re good enough will be determined, but they had a nice win over the weekend against Texas and the opportunities are certainly there.

-DAYTON AT SAINT LOUIS (Atlantic Ten).  Dayton has lost two straight and needs to pull out of this tailspin they’re in.  This is a road game, but it’s a very winnable road game.  In fact it would be a somewhat damaging loss if they didn’t win it.

-TCU AT TEXAS TECH (Big Twelve).  Texas Tech is by far the nation’s most improved team over the last couple of weeks.  They should cruise to another conference win tonight.

-MICHIGAN STATE AT OHIO STATE (Big Ten).  I don’t think Ohio State has much of a profile, but they’re way up in the Big Ten standings and they have opportunities for quality wins between now and the end, and that includes tonight.  They can still play their way in, but it won’t be easy.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Tuesday, February 23: Ball State at Toledo

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Ball State at Toledo, 8:00 PM Eastern, BCSN/Time Warner Sports-Ohio/espn3

For our latest HOOPS HD Report Video Podcast, CLICK HERE.

The UTR Game of the Day heads to Toledo, Ohio tonight, home of Corporal Maxwell Klinger, the Toledo Mud Hens, and of course the MAC’s Toledo Rockets.  Tonight, the Rockets welcome in the surprising Ball State Cardinals, who have sprinted out to a two game lead in the conference’s West Division and are trying to lock down a first round bye in the upcoming conference tournament.  Toledo enters the game with a record of 16-11 overall and 7-7 in MAC play, locked in a three way tie for second place in the West along with Northern Illinois and Central Michigan.  The three teams hold a narrow one game lead over Eastern Michigan and two games over Western Michigan in what may be over these last two weeks a tight battle for the 5th through 8th seeds in the conference tournament.  The first round of the MAC tourney is played on campus sites, and finishing between 5th and 8th would give a team a home game, while finishing 9th-12th will make a team have to go on the road.  Toledo has been led so far this season by Nathan Boothe and Jonathan Williams.  Both players were in double-digits in scoring in a loss back on January 6 at Ball State.  Williams is actually coming off his career-best scoring game in conference play, having scored 24 points in a loss to Eastern Michigan this past weekend.

Ball State currently sits at 18-9 overall and 9-5 in MAC play.  Although they are in firm control of the MAC West Division which a two game lead and only four to play, the conference ignores division standings when seeding the conference tournament.  In terms of their possible seed, they are locked in a three way tie for second place with Ohio and Kent State, all a game behind Akron.  Buffalo is sitting at 8-6, lurking only a game behind those three.  Finishing in the top four comes with a bye into the quarterfinals, so the Cardinals cannot let off the gas pedal these last two weeks.  Ball State has won five of their last six games including a home win last Friday night over Northern Illinois.  The Cardinals had five players in double figures in that win, most notably of which was Bo Calhoun who scored 10 points while pulling down 15 rebounds.  Ryan Weber was the star of the earlier win over Toledo, dropping 21 points, though Ball State had five players in double-digits in that win as well.  If that can put together another solid, balanced scoring attack tonight, the Cardinals can move one step closer to a division title and a first round bye with a win tonight.

Hoops HD Bracket Projections (Chad Sherwood): February 22nd

-The Bracket Below is not an attempt to guess what the actual committee will do on Selection Sunday, but rather what Chad Sherwood feels the bracket SHOULD look like if the season ended today.  Jon Teitel is our selection committee guessing expert.  For his latest seed list and bracket – CLICK HERE

CHAD’S NOTES ON THE BRACKET

My 1 seeds in order, were Kansas, Villanova, Oklahoma and Xavier.  Oklahoma still has an incredibly impressive resume despite having lost 3 of 4 games before their win this weekend at West Virginia. Virginia was my top 2 seed, narrowly being edged out by Xavier — for now.

– I know Duke on the 2 line may seem high, especially after they lost at Louisville, but I challenge anyone to find a resume below the 2 line that is better, especially with the win at North Carolina.

– Cal swept their road trip to the Washington schools this weekend to fill in the biggest hole in their resume — a lack of road wins.  With the Washington win being over a team that is at least on the Bubble, I think this resume is very solid now and that is why they are wearing white fairly comfortably on the 6 line.

– Texas Tech just continues to impress these past 2 weeks and has gone from being barely under consideration to solidly in on the 7 line.

– I could find little to distinguish the resumes of the top 3 American teams, UConn, Cincy and Temple.  As a result, they all ended up on the 9 line together.

– Monmouth, Wichita State and St Mary’s are all in as auto-bid winners.  They also were sandwiched in with my First Four teams.  My exact order was Oregon State, Seton Hall, Monmouth, Wichita State, Michigan, St Mary’s and Tulsa.  My other three 12 seeds all fell below the First Four (UALR, Hawaii and San Diego State).

– My TOP FOUR TEAMS OUT were, in order, Alabama, Gonzaga, St Bonaventure and Washington.  My next four beyond them were George Washington, Florida State, Clemson and LSU.  Florida State and LSU are currently both in nosedives and need a huge turnaround very quickly if they want to save their seasons.

– I do not set up any matchups on purpose and do not even see them until after the bracket is built.  That being said, there are a few great ones in here including UConn-Providence and Indiana-Butler.  Kansas also has a shot at playing Bucknell in the Round of 64, which may bring back a lot of bad memories for Jayhawks fans.

NOTES AND COMMENTS (John)

– I’ll start by answering Chad’s challenge – Michigan State and Miami both have a lot of wins against teams in the NCAA field, including wins against protected seeds. Michigan State’s early season win over Kansas is looming larger and larger. I know the U looked awful on Saturday, but they’re only a game out of first in the ACC; they have a chance to muddle the ACC race even further when they host Virginia tonight. Personally, I think the 2 line is Duke’s ceiling that they can achieve with the ACC Tournament championship.

– I’d personally flip-flop Dayton and Baylor after their respective weeks; Baylor did extremely well at Texas. Dayton looked very average against Saint Joe’s and St. Bonaventure. Average teams don’t belong this high on the 5-line.

– I know Chad is high on California after they finally won away from home, but I’d put Texas Tech above the Golden Bears simply because of their decisive win at Baylor over a week ago. It would have helped Cal more if Washington were in the NCAA field, but the Huskies have also regressed back to the mean.

– Initially, it jumped out to me to see Michigan in the First Four, but I have a sinking feeling that they’re going to not have Caris LeVert for the postseason. At best, he might be able to play – the Committee is going to have to consider how well the Wolverines play without LeVert on the floor. As for Tulsa, I’d wait and see if they can beat Temple before I consider putting them in the field.

– I’ll add one final comment as it relates to 3 American teams on the 9 line – is Chad finally valuing games “almost won” by each team? If so, Cincinnati needs to be a lot higher than what they are. I could MAYBE see one of those teams ending up this high if either one wins out the rest of the way, including the American Conference tournament in Orlando. But there is no way I can support this many teams that high up.

NOTES AND COMMENTS (David)

-Chad made a point to say that he doesn’t look for match-ups as he’s building the bracket.  I’d like to submit this as further evidence that Chad is clearly no fun.  I know the committee doesn’t do it either.  Well, they’re no fun either.  Now, I’m not in favor of moving seed lines to make things more fun, but if we can do it without moving seed lines, then why the hell not??  Swap Cincinnati and Temple!!  They’re in the same conference for cryin’ out loud!!  The potential Xavier v Cincinnati game in the Round of 32 makes me giddy.  But, we won’t get it because Chad is no fun.

-Chad alluded to this in his notes, but Texas Tech has done more to improve their profile these past two weeks than perhaps any other team.  I like them on the #7 line, and wouldn’t be surprised to see them rise higher than that before the season is over if they keep it up.  As most of you who have followed us this season already know, I’d like to point out that I’ve been big on Texas Tech all along, and am glad that Chad is finally coming around!

-Monmouth may be one of the most schizophrenic teams of all time.  I really don’t know what to make of them, and truth be told I’d probably end up putting them exactly where Chad has them, but a strong case could be made either way.  After watching their last few games, I think it’s safe to say that if shot selection were a point of emphasis by the committee then Monmouth would not even make the NIT.  But, it’s not.  It’s about the value of your wins and losses.  Their wins are very good.  Their losses are very bad.  VERY bad!  I hate to see a team that did so much to play their way inside the bubble get knocked out of it because they lost so many games to bad teams down the stretch, but you can’t overlook the four really bad losses that Monmouth has.  And, they’re lucky they didn’t pickup a fifth loss yesterday.

-On that note, I hate to say this being an Under the Radar guy (or…puppet, I guess), but I feel Chad has Chattanooga and Valpo exactly where they belong.  Outside the bubble.  Can they play their way back in before the season is over??  Unfortunately, no.  How could they??  No one that they face between now and the end is an at-large caliber team, so their paper will either stay the same or get worse.  They are both good teams.  They both had good seasons.  But, one of their wins better be that conference championship game or else the only way they’ll get to go to the NCAA Tournament is if they buy tickets.

-Finally, I like Cal a lot more than I did a week ago, but not on the #6 line.  Good lord.  They won at Wazzu.  You know what is required to win on the road at Wazzu??  You need to show up to the game and be dressed on time.  That’s really it.  Hell, even if you show up late and can’t get onto the court until fifteen minutes after the game has tipped, you probably still have a good chance at winning.

-Chad has Maryland on the #4 line playing Stony Brook, and Arizona on the #12 line facing Saint Mary’s.  I realize that Chad is looking at the paper there, and perhaps Saint Mary’s paper indicates they belong a head of Stony Brook after their big win (relatively speaking) at Gonzaga over the weekend.  But, if I’m Maryland, I’m trying to negotiate a trade, there.  As the better seeded team, they should get to swap opponents if they want to.  I’d rather play Saint Mary’s than Stony Brook.
