Under the Radar: February 10th

Chad and David begin by focusing on the Northeast Conference, which is one of the most exciting conference races with just one game separating the top five teams.  It’s also a conference with fun rivalries, and with high stakes during the regular season considering the conference tournament is played at campus sites.  They then run through the rest of the 23 Under the Radar conferences, and some of the talking points are how well Stony Brook is playing in the America East, whether or not Valparaiso deserves an at-large bid if they win out, how William & Mary could be able to earn an at-large bid, how strong Monmouth’s profile is, and how well Chattanooga is playing.  They also preview this week’s upcoming games, and reveal this week’s UTR Top Ten.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Wednesday, Feb 10th

Below is a rundown of tonight’s action, as well as a look back at last night.

NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s Under the Radar Game of the Day between South Dakota State and Omaha – CLICK HERE

-Xavier fell behind 19-4 for the start of their game against Creighton, and proceeded to go just 1-for-20 from beyond the arc in what turned out to be a decisive loss to a team that isn’t likely to finish anywhere near the field.  Chances are this will knock them off the #1 line, unless they’re able to win out and win the Big East Tournament.

-Miami got a big home win against a Pittsburgh team in a game that came down to the wire.  Miami continues to look like they’ll end up as a protected seed.

-West Virginia made a few runs at Kansas last night, but for the most part the Jayhawks kept them at arms length and ended up picking up the win at home.  Both teams were in the top ten, so I don’t think it really moves either team since Kansas was at home and more highly ranked.

-Dayton needed to overcome a double digit deficit at home against Duquesne in the final five minutes to pull out a close 76-74 win.  They are very safely in the field, but a loss like that at home can knock a team off the #4 line.

-Last, but definitely not least, Purdue and Michigan State played an overtime thriller with Purdue holding on to pick up one of their most notable wins of the year.  A road win like this for the Spartans would have been huge because the only thing that’s really missing from their profile is a big time road win against highly ranked team.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-BUTLER AT SETON HALL (Big East).  This game has an extremely pivotal feel for a Butler team that’s right on the bubble, and still below 500 in the Big East.  Seton Hall’s profile appears to be healthier at the moment, but there is room for them to improve as well.

-LSU AT SOUTH CAROLINA (SEC).  LSU continues to improve, and we now think they have played their way onto the bubble.  A win in this game would give their profile a huge boost, which is something they still need since they’re still playing catch up after a rough start to the season.  South Carolina scored a huge win over the weekend, so they come into this game with a lot of momentum.

-TEXAS A&M AT ALABAMA (SEC).  TAMU has hit a bit of a skid having lost three of their last four.  Tonight is a chance to pick up a conference road win and snap out of it.

-NEBRASKA AT WISCONSIN (Big Ten).  Wiscy has really been playing well.  I think they’ve played their way onto the bubble for now, and will likely play their way into the field if they keep it up.  They have a winnable conference game tonight at home against a Nebraska team that is a respectable 6-6 in league play, but it’s still a game Wiscy should win.

-PROVIDENCE AT MARQUETTE (Big East).  Providence has been very schizophrenic this year, which is pretty much how they were last year as well.  This is a winnable road game for them, but no matter what the strength of the opponent is, one is never certain what Providence is going to do.

-SAINT JOSEPH’S AT GEORGE WASHINGTON (Atlantic Ten).  This is a HUGELY important match up between two bubble teams.  As far as the overall importance of actually making the NCAA Tournament, this is probably one of the most important games of the day.

-BAYLOR AT KANSAS STATE (Big Twelve).  This is another hugely important game.  Baylor is trying to play their way up to a protected seed, and these are the kinds of road wins that can help get them there.  K State is trying to play their way into the field, and even though they have a lot of losses, none of them are all that bad.  If they can hold serve at home and pick up a few road wins between now and the end they could actually sneak into the field.

-IOWA STATE AT TEXAS TECH (Big Twelve).  Iowa State is another Big Twelve team that’s looking to end up as a protected seed.  This is one of their more winnable road games, so they need to take advantage of it.

-MICHIGAN AT MINNESOTA (Big Ten).  Michigan is solidly in the field, but they don’t have a lot of big wins on their profile, so they would be advised to avoid bad losses to teams like Minnesota.

-WASHINGTON AT UTAH (Pac Twelve).  this is a huge important game for Washington because they are right on the bubble and they could use a big time road win like this.  Utah is safely in the field and if they finish strong they should end up with a good seed.

-SAN DIEGO STATE AT FRESNO STATE (Mountain West).  This won’t be the easiest road game for the Aztecs to win.  If they win out, I think they should be safe come Selection Sunday, though.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Wednesday, February 10 – South Dakota State at Omaha

Under the Radar Game of the Day: South Dakota State at Omaha, 8:00 PM Eastern, Midco Sports/espn3

The UTR Game of the Day heads to Omaha, Nebraska tonight for a key Summit League battle between the South Dakota State Jackrabbits and the hometown Mavericks.  Scott Nagy’s South Dakota State team enters the game tonight in first place in the conference standings at 8-2, 19-5 overall.  They also have the league’s best power rating numbers with an RPI of 44, BPI of 77 and KenPom of 76.  After dropping a pair of early conference games at IUPUI aand North Dakota State, the Jackrabbits have run off five straight wins to pull back into sole possession of first place, including a home win over Omaha back on January 28, 87-76.  George Marshall and Deondre Parks led the way in that win, with Marshall scoring 28 points and Parks right behind him with 22.

The Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha enter tonight’s game at 7-4 in conference play, a game and a half behind South Dakota State, and 15-10 overall.  After an impressive 6-1 start to conference play, the Mavs have dropped three out of four games including a very disappointing loss at Western Illinois, giving the Leathernecks their only Summit League victory so far this season.  Omaha is led by Jake White, Devin Patterson and Tre-Shawn Thurman, all three of whom scored in double figures in the earlier loss to the Jackrabbits.  White needs to step up tonight.  After already recording four double-doubles this season, he has found himself in foul trouble the last two games, fouling out in the Western Illinois loss and being held to only 8 points and 2 rebounds (and 4 fouls) in a loss to Denver.  If he can stay on the court and Patterson and Thurman can light up the scoreboard, the Mavs could be in line for their first ever home win as a D1 program over South Dakota State.  A win tonight will also help them move up in the standings as they prepare to participate in the Summit League tournament for the first time ever with a shot to make the NCAAs in their first season of postseason eligibility since transitioning up.

-For the most part, the chalk held yesterday.  Notre Dame did get a very nice road win against a Clemson team who’s small margin for error just got a lot smaller, Duke knocked off Louisville, which is a nice win that they needed, Chattanooga held serve and picked up a road win at Mercer in what was most likely their toughest remaining game, and Oklahoma held on to beat Texas at home.

Oklahoma’s home win over Texas in and of itself isn’t noteworthy, but the way Texas played against what is one of the nation’s best teams in a true road game really is.  It won’t show up on the paper, but Texas led Oklahoma for the entire game, and had a chance to win in the final seconds.  That is a tremendous effort, and to me a tremendous statement as to what this Texas team is capable of doing.  They have improved drastically as the year has progressed, and I definitely think they’ll end up as a protected seed with the capability of going far in the NCAA Tournament.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-WEST VIRGINIA AT KANSAS (Big Twelve).  Nothing much to see here.  Just yet another Big Twelve game between two likely protected seeds that are ranked in the top ten.  West Virginia won the first meeting, but they’ll have a tons harder time winning this one.

-CINCINNATI AT UCF (American).  Cincinnati is squarely on the bubble and basically can’t afford to lose to any more non-tournament caliber teams.

-PITTSBURGH AT MIAMI FL (ACC).  I think Miami is looking like a protected seed.  The Hoops HD staff all feels differently about Pittsburgh, but I do think they’ll be wearing white in the Round of 64, and if they’re able to pull off a win in this game everyone else will probably start agreeing with that.

-MICHIGAN STATE AT PURDUE (Big Ten).  Michigan State could really use a road win against a top 25 caliber team in order to cement their profile and prove that they belong on the #2 line.  Purdue has a lot of good wins, but no great ones, so they have some room to move up as well.  Both teams have room for improvement, and both can improve with a win today.

-DUQUESNE AT DAYTON (Atlantic Ten).  Duquesne actually is improved, but the NIT is a much more realistic goal than the NCAAs this year, and a win in this game would help.  Dayton actually has a shot at a protected seed, and if they win out, which they’re good enough to do, they should get it.

-MONMOUTH AT MARIST (Metro Atlantic).  We say it for every Monmouth game, and we’ll say it again for this one.  If they win out they’ll be safely inside the bubble.  If they drop a game they may be in real trouble without the automatic bid.

-VIRGINIA TECH AT VIRGINIA (ACC).  This is a rivalry game that Virginia lost earlier in the season as the road team.  In this past few weeks, Virginia has suddenly turned into road warriors.  Virginia Tech has improved this year and has their program heading in the right direction, but this is an unbelievably tall order given how well UVA has looked recently.

-NORTH CAROLINA AT BOSTON COLLEGE (ACC).  UNC needs some big road wins if they want to end up on the #1 line.  This game does not qualify, but they also need to avoid losses to weak teams.

-XAVIER AT CREIGHTON (Big East).  Xavier is ranked in the top five and is on our #1 line, but it will be interesting to see how they react as a road team going into a snake pit with a huge bullseye on their back.  If they want to end up with a #1 seed they need to win games like this.

-WICHITA STATE AT DRAKE (Missouri Valley).  Wichita is coming off somewhat of a surprising loss, but shouldn’t have too much trouble rebounding.  If they win out, which they’re good enough to do, they’ll be safely inside the bubble.

-VILLANOVA AT DEPAUL (Big East).  Nova is ranked #1, and shouldn’t have too much trouble picking up another conference road win tonight.

-GEORGIA AT KENTUCKY (SEC).  Kentucky is very safely in the field, but they’re not the protected seed that we were expecting them to be.  They’ve been strong at home all year long, though, and shouldn’t have too much trouble beating a Georgia team that’s had a rough season.

-OLE MISS AT FLORIDA (SEC).  Florida got blitzed by Kentucky over the weekend, but is still in good shape and should be able to pick this one up at home.

-Bowie State (nondiv1) @ Maryland (Buy Game)
-Benedictine (nondiv1) @ Grand Canyon.  This is a buy game, but it’s a buy game that features the Team of the People!!!

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Tuesday, February 9: Central Michigan at Eastern Michigan

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Central Michigan at Eastern Michigan, 7:00 PM Eastern, espn3

For our latest HOOPS HD Report Video Podcast, CLICK HERE.

The MAC takes center stage tonight as all 12 teams will be in action, including a tough road test for the West Division’s co-leaders from Central Michigan as they travel across the state to Ypsilanti to take on Eastern Michigan.  CMU enters tonight’s game with a record of 13-10 overall and 6-4 in conference play, tied with surprising Ball State atop the West Division standings.  Heading into the season, the Chippewas had been our favorite to win the MAC championship.  Unfortunately, the team had a rough non-conference season that included a last place finish in the Gulf Coast Showcase and close road losses at Grand Canyon and William & Mary.  Not having their star guard, Chris Fowler, available for the first 7 games of the season (including the Gulf Coast games) certainly did not help.  His return to form has certainly helped their resurgence during conference play.  In fact, he has averaged over 8 assists per game during his last six games, including a double-double of 14 points and 10 assists last week in a win over Kent State.  Fowler is not alone in leading this team as Rayshawn Simmons, Baylon Rayson and Luke Meyer can all score, while Rayson, John Simons and Josh Kozinski are all deadly from long range.  This team certainly has the pieces to win the West Division and contend for a top seed in the MAC Tournament.  More importantly, they may prove to be the most dangerous team at the MAC Tournament in Cleveland this year, meaning the top teams in the East such as Akron, Buffalo and Kent State better not write off the West.

Today, CMU is heading to Eastern Michigan, a site that the UTR Game of the Day has not visited since the very first day of the 2015-16 season when the Eagles hosted Vermont in the first game of the year.  The Eagles currently sit at 11-12 overall but only 3-7 in MAC play, mostly due to a very rough stretch in which they have lost 6 of their last 7 games.  Freshman James Thompson has been one of the bright spots for the Eagles so far this season.  He has scored in double figures 18 times this year and has 14 double-doubles.  He will need to be dominant again tonight if Eastern Michigan wants to pull off the upset victory.  However, as we have documented in the past, winning on the road in MAC play is never easy, so do not be shocked if Eastern finds a way to get it done at home tonight.

The Hoops HD Report: February 8th

Chad and the panel begin by discussing the postseason ban at Louisville, and how they feel the school acted selfishly by imposing the ban now in order to preserve future seasons and recruiting classes.  From there they run through all the major conferences and talk about how Duke has struggled, but is still a tournament team, how Clemson needs to win more road games, how many good teams there are in the Big Twelve, how strong Oregon has been playing, how Dayton out of the Atlantic Ten could end up as a protected seed, and much more…
