-Xavier and Maryland both look like protected seeds (at least most of the time).  They both took on non-tournament teams yesterday, and both escaped.  Kansas, Iowa, and Virginia are likely protected seeds who had no problems against the non tournament teams that they faced.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-TEXAS A&M AT VANDERBILT (SEC).  TAMU is coming off a big win against Iowa State, and appears to be cruising toward a protected seed.  They should be able to pick up another road win tonight against a Vandy team that’s underachieved up to this point.

-UNC WILMINGTON AT HOFSTRA (Colonial).  If Hofstra can run away from the league, they may land inside the bubble regardless of what happens in the conference tournament, but they’ll have to come close to winning out in order to do it.  UNCW has had a good season as well, so this could be a challenge for the Pride.

-OHIO STATE AT WISCONSIN (Big Ten).  Both teams are way outside looking in, but Wisconsin has played better these past two weeks then they have all season, and they’ll be able to play their way into the discussion if they keep it up.

-WILLIAM & MARY AT NORTHEASTERN (Colonial).  Northeastern has been somewhat of a disappointment this season, but they’re still capable of playing well.  William & Mary, like Hofstra, has a chance to land inside the bubble if they end up running away from the league.  Of course, that means picking up wins in games like this.

-WOFFORD AT CHATTANOOGA (SoCon).  Chattanooga will likely land inside the bubble if they win out until the conference tournament, but anything short of that and they’ll probably need the automatic bid.

-SOUTH FLORIDA AT CINCINNATI (American).  Cincinnati should win this without too much trouble.  In fact, they’ll be in tons of trouble if they don’t.

-TROY AT LITTLE ROCK (Sun Belt).  Little Rock has just two losses, and has some pretty impressive wins on their profile, yet no one in the media is even talking about them.  I think they’re inside the bubble right now, and will be safe for an NCAA Tournament bid so long as they hold serve for the rest of the regular season.

-SAINT MARY’S AT BYU (West Coast).  This is Saint Mary’s first really tough road test of the year, and I think it’s a game they need to win in order to feel completely safe.  They’ve got a bloated record, but they did it against a weak schedule where they’ve played very few road games, and the ones they have played weren’t all that tough.

-CONNECTICUT AT MEMPHIS (American).  UConn is inside the bubble for now, but they’re a long way from being able to coast.  A road win in a game like this would help them out.

-COLORADO AT OREGON (Pac Twelve).  Colorado has had a good season and should safely make the field.  If they can pick up a road win in a game like this it would really help their seed.  Oregon looks like the best team in the conference right now, and I expect that they’ll end up as a protected seed.

-GRAND CANYON AT NEW MEXICO STATE (WAC).  The Team of the People is looking to pick up one of their biggest ever wins since transitioning up to div1!!  These are the two top teams in the conference, and the winner will be in the driver’s seat to finish first!!  #LopesWaiver

-GONZAGA AT LMU (West Coast).  Right now I think Gonzaga is on the outside looking in.  Their margin for error is incredibly small right now, and a loss in a game like this could really kill them.

-UCLA AT USC (Pac Telve).  USC won the first meeting, and has looked like the better team overall this season.  USC is contending for a protected seed.  UCLA is simply trying to make the field.  A win in this game would really help both teams’ causes.  Oh yeah, it’s also a big rivalry game.

-UTAH AT OREGON STATE (Pac Twelve).  Oregon State has tapered off somewhat and needs to turn it around quickly if they want to make the NCAAs.  Whether they do or don’t, it’s still been a good year for the Beavers and for the first time in decades their program seems to be going in the right direction.  Utah is in contention for a protected seed and road game like this are the kind that they need to win in order to end up there.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Thursday, February 4: Grand Canyon at New Mexico State

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Grand Canyon at New Mexico State, 9:00 PM Eastern, AGGIE VISION/wacsports.com

For our most recent HOOPS HD Under the Radar video podcast, CLICK HERE.

At the start of the season, we here at HOOPS HD designated the Grand Canyon Antelopes as our adopted “Team of the People”.  We chose the ‘Lopes because we expected them to be highly competitive this season and because of their unique situation — capable of winning the WAC while at the same time being ineligible this season (and next) for the WAC and NCAA Tournaments as they complete their transition up to the Division I level.  We started the #LopesWaiver campaign in an attempt to get the school a waiver so it could compete in the NCAA Tournament this season.  Little did we expect, however, just how good this team would be.  Despite a surprising and disappointing home loss last week to Seattle, the ‘Lopes are currently 19-3 overall and tied for first place in the conference at 6-1.  Their RPI (102), BPI (97), and KenPom (105) are all tops in the WAC.  They already have huge home conference wins over New Mexico State and Cal-State Bakersfield.  And with this amazing success, combined with the failure to date to get the NCAA to change their rules, we are now petitioning the President of the United States to intervene on their behalf.  CLICK HERE NOW TO SIGN THE PETITION!!!!!!

Tonight, first place in the WAC is at stake in what may prove to be the game of the year in the conference.  Even though the ‘Lopes knocked off New Mexico State at home back on January 9 by at 79-75 score, New Mexico State has not lost any other games in WAC play, including picking up a double overtime win at Bakersfield a week and a half ago.  The Aggies are now 14-8 overall, 6-1 in conference.  They are also the dominant force in the WAC the past few seasons, having now won the conference’s automatic bid for four consecutive years (and every season since realignment sent  the majority of the WAC’s members to other conferences).  The Aggies are led by Pascal Siakam, who has scored a double-double in every game bit three so far this season — including an amazing 24 point, 23 rebound effort against UTEP back in December.  The ‘Lopes will counter with their top payers Grandy Glaze and Joshua Braun.  Braun was the star of the earlier win over the Aggies scoring 23 points while pulling down 11 boards.  Grand Canyon has already won at San Diego State and beaten Houston on a neutral court this season.  However, to defeat their top rival in the WAC on New Mexico State’s home court tonight (especially with both their prior games at NMSU the last two seasons having been 20+ point blowout losses) will certainly send the message to the WAC and the college basketball world that Thunder Dan’s team has arrived — and that they deserve to play in the WAC and NCAA Tournaments!

Under the Radar: February 3rd

Chad is joined by David and John for this week’s edition.  They begin on a solemn note as they send their condolences out to the friends, family, and teammates of Mercer’s Jabri Bryan, who was tragically murdered the other night.  From there, they go to the Colonial where they talk about Hofstra, William & Mary, and the overall strength of the conference, and what the chances are of one of those schools getting an at-large bid if they’re able to run away from the conference.  They run through the rest of the 23 Under the Radar conferences and discuss how Valparaiso, Little Rock, Monmouth, and even Chattanooga seemed in line to make the NCAA Tournament regardless of what happens in their conference tournaments.  They talk about how surprising teams like Houston Baptist has been in the Southland, and IUPUI has been in the Summit League.  All that, this week’s Top Ten, a look ahead to the upcoming action, and more…

And for all you radio lovers, below is an mp3 version of the show…

NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s Under the Radar Game of the Day between Bucknell and American – CLICK HERE

-We will be recording our Under the Radar Video Podcast tonight, so it should be posted late tonight or early tomorrow morning.  Be on the lookout for that.

-Providence wins at Villanova.  Providence beats a full strength Arizona team on a neutral floor.  Providence wins at Butler.  Providence LOSES at….DePaul??  There are head scratchers.  There is Cluessing.  And then there is I guess the next level, which is what Providence did last night.  It by no means changes the course of their season nor negates all the good things they’ve done, but it is a setback, and it is really bizarre.

-Kentucky followed up their very impressive showing in an overtime loss at Kansas, with a very impressive start to the game at Tennessee.  They then failed to hold on, and Tennessee ended up getting a feel good win at home, and Kentucky adds yet another road loss to a non tournament team to their profile.

-West Virginia picked up a monster road win at Iowa State, which is a nice way to rebound after getting blitzed at Florida over the weekend.

-Indiana picked up a big road win at Michigan, which included a nine minute stretch at the end of the first half where Michigan scored just one point.  The Hoosiers really needed that one.

-Butler picked up a much needed win at home against Georgetown and quite frankly looked as good in that game as they have in any game since conference play began.

-Clemson needed a road win at Wake Forest, and got it.  It’s not that it was a big win in and of itself, but it’s just Clemson’s second one of the season, and it’s important that they demonstrate they can beat non tournament teams on the road.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-SAINT JOHN’S AT XAVIER (Big East).  Xavier is still in the hunt for a first place finish in the Big East, as well as a #1 seed in the NCAAs.  They have one of their more winnable remaining games of the season tonight.

-ARKANSAS AT FLORIDA (SEC).  Florida is coming off a much needed signature win against West Virginia, and needs to hold serve (which they’ve done all year) against an Arkansas team that has struggled on the road this year.

-NOTRE DAME AT MIAMI FL (ACC).  Both teams have good profiles, and although Miami has slipped recently they still have a good shot at ending up as a protected seed if they’re able to finish strong.

-DAVIDSON AT GEORGE WASHINGTON (Atlantic Ten).  GW has a lot of work to do.  Davidson has so much work to do that anything short of winning out likely won’t be enough.

-VCU AT LA SALLE (Atlantic Ten).  I really like how VCU has been playing, and expect that they’ll pick up another road win and remain unbeaten in A10 play.

-PENN STATE AT IOWA (Big Ten).  I like Iowa’s chances to end up on the #1 line, and don’t expect them to be challenged tonight.

-SAINT BONAVENTURE AT SAINT JOSEPH’S (Atlantic Ten).  Once upon a time this rivalry had a little heat to it, so it’s always somewhat fun when they get together.  Saint Joe’s is having a great season and shouldn’t have too much trouble picking up this win at home against a Saint Bona program that’s improving, but isn’t quite there yet.

-BOSTON COLLEGE AT VIRGINIA (ACC).  Virginia is coming off what is perhaps their biggest win and best played game of the year.  They come home tonight for one of their more winnable conference games.

-CREIGHTON AT VILLANOVA (Big East).  Like Xavier, Nova is right in the race for a first place finish and a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, but they need to hold serve in games like this.  Creighton is way outside looking in, but they can still get onto, or even inside of the bubble if they can rack up some major wins such as this.  Now, that’s much easier said than done, but the opportunities are there.

-MARYLAND AT NEBRASKA (Big Ten).  Maryland’s profile is good, but if they want to get as high as the #2 or #1 line they can’t afford to lose games like this, even if it is a road game.

-MARQUETTE AT SETON HALL (Big East).  Marquette has a ton of work to do, and you have to question whether or not they’re strong enough to finish it off, but the opportunities are there.  I like this Seton Hall team, and actually think they’re being somewhat undervalued.  Now, having said that, it is very important that they hold serve in this game and get it done in order to remain strongly in the picture.

-OKLAHOMA STATE AT TEXAS TECH (Big Twelve).  I for one don’t think Texas Tech even belongs in the discussion right now, much less in the field, but some are still projecting them in the field.  They absolutely must win tonight.  I think we can agree on that.

-KANSAS STATE AT KANSAS (Big Twelve).  This is a rivalry.  There is some heat there.  But, it’s a fairly lopsided rivalry.  Kansas is always better, and even when K State does occasionally win, they almost never do so at Kansas.  Kansas is solidly in the protected seed range.  K State is nowhere near the field.

-SOUTHENR ILLINOIS AT WICHITA STATE (Missouri Valley).  Wichita has been blowing through conference play and I don’t expect that to change tonight.

-ARIZONA AT WASHINGTON STATE (Pac Twelve).  Arizona is still shorthanded due to injuries, and is just 4-4 in their last eight games.  The last thing the need right now is a damaging road loss.

-ARIZONA STATE AT WASHINGTON (Pac Twelve).  Washington remains squarely on our bubble, and like any bubble team every game has a pivotal feel to it.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Wednesday, February 3: Bucknell at American

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Bucknell at American, 7:30 PM Eastern, patriotleague.tv

The UTR Game of the Day returns to the Patriot League tonight as the first place Bucknell Bison head to DC to take on the American Eagles.  Bucknell has been close to dominant since starting league play, sitting at 9-1 in conference despite only being 12-9 overall.  In fact the only conference loss for the Bison so far was a somewhat surprising 11 point home loss to Colgate on January 16.  The Bison are led by Chris Hass and Nana Foulland.  Hass has been a consistent double-digit scorer almost every game this season, highlighted by a 40 point effort at Army.  Foulland is capable of a double-double any night and is coming off a 19 point, 9 rebound, and 3 block effort last time out.  If the Bison can win tonight, they will maintain if not extend their two game lead over Navy, and place themselves in prime position to win home court advantage throughout the Patriot League tournament.

Standing between Bucknell and their 10th conference win of the season is one of the more interesting stories in the Patriot League or any Under the Radar conference over the last two weeks.  American began the season 2-15, with their wins coming on November 28 at New Hampshire and on December 4 at Youngstown State, after which they lost 10 straight.  Their losses included games at St. Francis (PA) and at home to Maryland-Eastern Shore.  The 2-15 start also included an 0-6 Patriot League start.  Then something must have clicked.  Since January 20, the Eagles have won four straight, winning at Lafayette, at Navy, at Colgate and at home against Holy Cross.  To show just how shocking those wins were, KenPom rated the win at Navy as the #2 upset for the week, having only given the Eagles a 5% chance to win that game.  Delante Jones led the way in the three road wins, scoring 23, 23 and 15 points respectively; however, Jesse Reed took over for the home win with 16 points as Jones was held to only half a dozen.  Although defeating Bucknell tonight would be an upset, the way AU has been playing the past couple of weeks, we simply cannot overlook them.  This may be the most dangerous 6-15 team in the entire country right now.  We will see tonight if they can make it 7-15 and pull to within one game of .500 in Patriot League play.

NEWS AND NOTES

-For Chad Sherwood’s Under the Radar Game of the Day between Louisiana Monroe and Louisiana Lafayette – CLICK HERE

-Monmouth, who we believe to be safely inside the bubble despite some questionable losses, picked up another impressive road win at Siena last night.  Siena is not a tournament team, but they were also a team that had not lost at home prior to last night, and the committee should recognize that.  Monmouth has now won an amazing ten true road games, which includes at Georgetown, at UCLA, at Iona (who’s only home loss is to Monmouth) and now at Siena (who’s only home loss is to Monmouth).

-North Carolina still hasn’t beaten a top 25 team on the road.  For that matter, they haven’t beaten a team on the road that’s likely to be wearing white in the round of 64.  Last night, they fell at Louisville.  I still think UNC will ultimately end up on the #1 line, but they need to beat at least one ranked team on the road before the end of the year.

-Texas is one of the most improved teams of the season if you look at them early in the year and look at them now.  They got a huge conference rivalry road win at Baylor last night.  That’s always an emotional game, and last night wasn’t any different.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-KENTUCKY AT TENNESSEE (SEC).  Kentucky is coming off one of their most impressive efforts of the season despite the loss.  Tennessee isn’t a tournament team, but they are tough to beat at home, so the Wildcats need to rebound quickly from the overtime heartbreaker at Kansas.

-LSU AT AUBURN (SEC).  LSU just missed a chance to pick up a huge quality win against top ranked Oklahoma this weekend, and they still have a ton of work to do just to get themselves into the discussion.  Auburn is a mile from being inside the bubble, but they are at least capable of competing against good teams at home.

-SOUTH CAROLINA AT GEORGIA (SEC).  South Carolina continues to rack up win after win after win, and can add to their road win total against a Georgia team that’s been rather solid at home this year.

-GEORGETOWN AT BUTLER (Big East).  Right now, Butler appears to be just inside the bubble, whereas Georgetown is just out, but having said that the teams are going in drastically different directions.  Georgetown has been playing well lately and has picked up some big wins, whereas Butler has dropped several to teams that don’t appear to be tournament teams.  Both teams really need this one.

-TCU AT OKLAHOMA (Big Twelve).  This is perhaps Oklahoma’s most winnable remaining game.  They shouldn’t have any trouble at all.

-VIRGINIA TECH AT SYRACUSE (ACC).  Syracuse has played their way inside of our bubble, and they should be safe so long as they hold serve in games like this and pick up another notable win or two.  The problem is that you just never know what Syracuse is going to do.

-CLEMSON AT WAKE FOREST (ACC).  Clemson has been playing tons better these past two weeks, but they still have a lot of work to do to make up for a weak OOC schedule and some questionable losses.  The other thing that they’re lacking in is road wins.  This is a winnable road game that they need to pick up.

-WYOMING AT AIR FORCE (Mountain West, Front Range).  This game has no NCAA Tournament implications whatsoever.  We just love the Front Range!

-WEST VIRGINIA AT IOWA STATE (Big Twelve).  West Virginia is in the midst of a very tough road stretch.  We feel that both these teams are protected seeds so this would be a high caliber win for whoever pulls it off.

-INDIANA AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten).  Both teams have bloated records, but both teams need more wins against teams that are actually good than what they have, so this is a chance for both of them to pick up a needed quality win.

-DUKE AT GEORGIA TECH (ACC).  I still think Duke is safe as far as making the field goes, but they wont’ be if they can’t hold serve against non tournament teams in games like this.

-PROVIDENCE AT DEPAUL (Big East).  Providence has not lost a true road game all season and likely won’t lose tonight either.

-COLORADO STATE AT SAN DIEGO STATE (Mountain West).  If San Diego State wins out, which they are good enough to do, I think they’ll land inside the bubble.
