Hoops HD Mock Selection Committee Update: Saturday, March 14th

We have seeded the first eight lines, but that is subject to change.  We actually spend as much time scrubbing the seed list, if not more so, than we do initially putting it together.  Seeding is done by having the ten committee members vote for who they think the best eight teams are.  The eight teams that receive the most votes are then ranked 1-thru-8 by the committee.  The top four teams are the #1 seed line, the next four teams are called carry overs.  The committee then picks who they feel the next best eight teams are in addition to the four carry overs.  The four teams that get the most votes are added to the four previous teams, and they are once again ranked 1-thru-8 with the top four being placed on the #2 line.  This process is repeated until the entire bracket is seeded.

This process can begin, and due to time constraints really needs to begin, prior to the entire field being selected.  In our case, even though we’ve begun seeding, we don’t have our entire field selected.  We’re going to have to add at least three more teams, and right now have four carry overs in Miami FL, BYU, Colorado State and Boise State.  Tonight, we will probably have the entire field selected, and we’ll also talk about contingencies for tomorrow, as we are guaranteed to have several teams that are still playing that we have not yet selected.

Below is a look at what our current board looks like.  It is a replica of what the real selection committee’s board looks like.  Keep in mind, we are not necessarily trying to guess the selection committee, but rather go through the process of selecting and seeding the teams using the same procedures and points of emphasis that the real committee uses.

THE PROCEDURE

As we do every year, we have convened a committee of ten individuals who intently follow college basketball, and are replicating (at least to a point) the selection process that the actual Selection Committee goes through, while keeping a similar timeline.

The first order of business was to select 36 teams that we feel are in the field no matter what happens in their conference tournaments.  This is accomplished by each of the ten committee members voting for UP TO 36 teams whom they feel are in the tournament.  If eight of the ten members vote for a team, that team is placed into the field.  For every team that gets seven or fewer votes, that team is placed on the “Nomination Board,” which really should be called the “Consideration Board,” but is instead called the “Nomination Board.”

A second vote is taken where committee members vote for teams who they think should be considered for inclusion, but are not absolutely certain of yet.  Any team that gets three out of ten votes is then placed on the “Nomination Board” along with the teams who didn’t make the first cut.

After our initial ballot, there were 26 teams on the Tournament Board (Arizona, Arkansas, Baylor, Butler, Duke, Georgetown, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Providence, San Diego State, SMU, Saint John’s, Utah, VCU, Villanova, Virginia, West Virginia, Wichita State and Wisconsin).

So, the next task was to add ten more teams to the board.  We did this by having each member pick the top eight teams (without ranking them) from the nomination board.  The eight teams that got the most votes were then submitted to each committee member, and ranked 1-thru-8 (after much discussion and debate).  The top four teams were placed into the field.  The four that didn’t make it were carried over.  The committee selected eight more teams that were not carried over, the top four of those eight joined the four carry overs, and the teams were once again ranked 1-thru-8, with the top four getting in.

With the Big Twelve, ACC and Big East having all their remaining teams already on the tournament board, that opened up three more spots for at-large teams.  Every time one of the 36 teams wins a conference tournament, it opens up another spot.

The below graphic is a replica of what the actual Selection Committee Board looks like.  Well, it’s a replica of the layout.  The teams on it are the teams we’ve selected while replicating the process.  I must stress that these teams have not yet been ranked.  They have merely been listed.

PUPPET RAMBLINGS!!

-I respect all the individuals on our mock committee.  Well, that’s not true, but they don’t respect me either so I guess that makes us even.  Some people just don’t like puppets!!  Having said that, we are very far apart in some of our opinions.  This is important, because it is very possible that the real committee has members who also do not agree with the consensus.

-I don’t see the love for Indiana.  When I see a team win so few true road games, it gives me pause.  I realize they have good wins, but I don’t think the best way to measure a team is to just count up top 50 and top 100 wins.  They have a home win against Maryland, which is very good, but Maryland is 6-4 in true road games.  So, while it’s a good win, it’s not quite the same as if they had won at Maryland.  Ohio State is just 3-6 on the road, and none of their wins came against NIT teams, much less strong NCAA teams, so do we really need to be giving Indiana a lot of credit for that win??  I would argue no.  I did argue no.  But, I lost.  That’s how committees work.

-Iona was voted off of the Nomination Board almost instantly, yet Murray State was left up.  I was the only person that voted to keep them on.  The logic was that we didn’t think they’d make the field, so why not just take them off??  I agree that they PROBABLY won’t make it, but I felt they were at least worth looking at.  We voted, I lost.  Again, that’s how committees work.  For more on Iona –CLICK HERE TO READ MY RANT FROM YESTERDAY

-Finally, I like Boise State, yet we have not voted them in yet.  I understand that they don’t have an abundance of high RPI wins, but what they do have is a lot of decent ones.  They’re the only team that won at San Diego State, who is not as good as Maryland, but I would argue that being the only team to win at San Diego State is better than being one of four teams to beat Maryland at home.  I argued that, and lost.  That’s how committees work.

-I’ve voiced what I disagreed with, but overall I agree with most of what we’ve done.  I also feel that the arguments that I don’t agree with are still well reasoned and well informed.

-Tonight, we will begin the seeding process, and we will add at least one more team to our field.

-I’ve said my piece, and am now opening this up to the other nine members of the committee to see if they would like to add any comments.  They will be posted below, so be sure and check back throughout the day.  Some will talk about how wrong I am, and that’s fine, even though they’re wrong because anyone who disagrees with me probably is.

OTHER COMMITTEE COMMENTS

Chad:

-After further consideration, I actually agree with David about Indiana.  The Committee can vote a team back from At-Large and down to Under Consideration if 8 out of 10 members agree to so do (and that team could later be voted back into the field again).  If memory serves, our HOOPS HD Committee did this last year.  I intend to start this evening’s session with a motion to do the same for the Hoosiers.

-Also David is clearly completely infatuated with Tim Cluess’ mustache, probably because puppets tend to be unable to grow any facial hair.  Iona has four sub-150 losses on their profile and is not even worth mentioning in the same breath as Murray State.  I do no believe either teams belongs in the field, but I see the argument for Murray being on the “Nomination Board”.  I do not see even that for Iona.

Under the Radar Rant!!: Valpo, Iona and Wofford Deserve As Much Attention as Murray State

For our daily Championship Week Video Notebook, where we review all of yesterday’s action, preview all of today, show our mock committee updates, provide a viewing guide, update our Survival Board, and basically provide you with everything you need for championship week – CLICK HERE

Okay, for starters, this is NOT meant to be an attack on Murray State, although I realize people will read it that way.  I’m also not calling out any individuals, but just the college basketball media in general, and have reached out to some good writers that may be able to help.  I DO like that people have noticed Murray State….finally!  It wasn’t until about a week-and-a-half ago that I heard anyone in the main stream media say anything about them, which makes me question what took so long.  I’m a puppet, so I’m allowed to be a cynic, and because of that I don’t think that most people in the media even thought about Murray State at all until they appeared in the Top 25.  That suddenly made them a trendy team to like and advocate for, which is great, but it conveniently allows them to sound smart after the fact by acting as if they’ve liked Murray all along.  Murray State suddenly became the media’s dark horse, which means they’re no longer a dark horse.

I have another reason for feeling this way.  There are teams that we here at Hoops HD classify as “Under the Radar” teams that we believe are clearly better than Murray State, but yet have no one in the media writing about them or campaigning for htem.  Again, this is NOT an attack on Murray, but rather an advocation for these other teams.

Let’s start with Wofford.  Now, they won the automatic bid, so fortunately it’s not an issue.  But, going into the SoCon Tournament, I did not hear one person in the media arguing that they belonged in without the automatic bid the way they were arguing for Murray State when the OVC started.  I seriously doubt they’d be arguing for Wofford now had they not won the automatic bid.  Wofford won more div1 games than Murray did, and they did it against a much tougher schedule.  They won at NC State, at Chattanooga (who had just one other home loss), and at East Tennessee State and Mercer, who were two other teams that were tough to beat at home.  Those four wins are a ton better than Murray State’s four best wins.  Wofford had more div1 wins, better wins, and a tougher schedule, yet…not a word about them from the media, at least not nearly to the degree that the media has spoken up for Murray State.

How about Valparaiso??  They had as many div1 wins as Murray did, and also played a tougher schedule (albeit barely).  They won at Eastern Kentucky, which is an OVC team that Murray didn’t have to play on the road and whom they needed overtime to beat at home after being down by 5pts with  a minute to go in regulation.  They also won at Cleveland State.  Oh yeah, Valpo also beat Murray State on a neutral floor in Nashville.  By 35 points.  I’ve heard some argue that was early in the year before Murray had gelled.  I might be able to see that point in some cases, but Murray returned four starters from a year go, so to just ignore that win by Valpo on the grounds that Murray was inexperienced at the time is ridiculous.

So, we’ve got a Wofford team that won more div1 games against a tougher schedule and had four pretty good wins (two of which were REALLY good wins), and we’ve got a Valpo team that won just as many div1 games as Murray, and beat Murray.  No one is talking about them.  But, fortunately they won the automatic bids.  Now, here is a team that didn’t….

What about Iona??  They also played a tougher schedule than Murray State, and they also won more div1 games than Murray State.  They finished first in their league, and they lost in the conference championship game to a team that they beat twice during the regular season.  Why no argument or attention for Iona??  Iona won at Wake Forest, at Rider (who only had two other home losses), and at Manhattan (who had just one other home loss).  Iona’s loss in the MAAC Championship game came to a good team that they beat twice during the year, including once on the road.  Every single argument that’s being made for Murray State could be made, and should be made, even more strongly for Iona.

Murray State did not have to play Eastern Kentucky and Belmont on the road, whereas Iona, Valpo and Wofford all had to play the best teams in their leagues on the road.  Murray State had just three road wins against teams with winning records.  Much has been made about how tough it is for Murray State to schedule, and I get that.  But, I also can’t help but notice that when monitoring basketballtravelers.com throughout the offseason, Murray had ten postings looking for games, and all but one of them was for a home and home to start at Murray State.  Now, to be completely fair, that’s just what they posted.  I have no idea how many ads of good teams that were looking for games that Murray State tried to answer and were told no, so if they did that (which it’s very possible that they did), then a thousand pardons.  Also, I know Murray State has put together stronger schedules than this in the past, particularly in 2012 when they earned a #6 seed that they definitely deserved.  But, when I see nine ads out of ten asking to start home-and-homes in Murray, I can’t help but think that at least in some cases, it wasn’t so much that teams didn’t want to play Murray State under any circumstances whatsoever; they just didn’t want to play them in home-and-homes starting at Murray.  Wofford, and even conference mates Belmont and Eastern Kentucky were able to put together better schedules despite being on the same rung of the college basketball ladder that Murray State is, and yet, no one is arguing for them.

And, about Belmont, who by the way is in the same conference as Murray State….

No one argued for Belmont last year when they won the league, won at North Carolina, won at Middle Tennessee (who was good at home), and had their two worst losses come when they didn’t have two of their starters.  Why the hell not??  Last year’s Belmont team did a lot more than this year’s Murray State team, and the main stream media was completely silent when it came to arguing about how they should be included (and they should have been!).

So, I’m glad that the media is arguing for Murray State.  They should be. But, I’m frustrated that they don’t appear to have noticed them until they cracked the rankings, and that they haven’t noticed the other teams we’ve mentioned who are probably even more deserving than Murray State.  The Racers definitely deserves the attention they’re getting, and the issues they face with the system being stacked against them are definitely real.  But, the other teams we’ve pointed out deserve the media’s attention too, and they’re not getting it.  So, I’m not looking for a fight, but I am asking for help.  Give Iona, Wofford and Valpo some love!!  Don’t just dismiss them for the exact same reasons you’re blaming everyone else for dismissing Murray State.

As far as the “eye test” goes, we’ve watched Murray State all year.  We started talking about them before the season started.  We watched the other teams as well, and we honestly feel that those teams are better even though no one in the media has said a word about them.  We know scheduling is an issue.  If you watch our preseason Under the Radar Podcast, go to about the 23:25 mark where we address Murray State…
