TODAY’S REGULAR SEASON HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-SYRACUSE AT NC STATE (ACC).  NC State appears to be in pretty good shape and should end up in the field so long as they don’t go into the tank.

-MIAMI FL AT VIRGINIA TECH (ACC).  Miami is right on the bubble, and needs a strong finish.  Dropping a game to a team as bad as Virginia Tech could be a death blow, even if they are the road team

-PITTSBURGH AT FLORIDA STATE (ACC).  Pitt is outside the bubble and needs a strong finish to play their way in.  They need to win this game, and then make some noise in the conference tournament as well.

-BUTLER AT PROVIDENCE (Big East).  Both teams have very solid profiles and are tied in the standings, so the winner will get the upper hand in the conference tournament, as well as another quality win on their resume.

-SETON HALL AT GEORGETOWN (Big East).  Georgetown is in the #6-#7 seed range right now, and could improve that with a strong showing in the conference tournament.

-NORTHWESTERN AT IOWA (Big Ten).  Iowa has a pretty solid profile and should be fine so long as they hold serve.

-MICHIGAN STATE AT INDIANA (Big Ten).  I think Michigan State has been playing better, but still has a lot of room for improvement.  Indiana just needs to win this in order to feel safe, so there is quite a bit on the line for both teams.

-CONNECTICUT AT TEMPLE (American).  Temple is right on the bubble and has a razor thin margin for error.  They can’t afford to lose at home to a non-tournament team.

-OKLAHOMA STATE AT WEST VIRGINIA (Big Twelve).  Oklahoma State is very safely inside the bubble and could use a big win to help out their seed.  West Virginia has been playing really well and could end up as a protected seed if they finish strong and pick up some big wins in the conference tournament.

-SAINT JOHN’S AT VILLANOVA (Big East).  I love how the Johnnies have been playing, but as good as they’ve looked down the stretch I don’t think they have enough to beat a #1 caliber seed on the road.  Nova should get a #1 seed, especially if they win out.

-ALABAMA AT TEXAS A&M (SEC).  TAMU is outside the bubble and has quite a bit of work to do.  A win won’t help much them today, but a loss sure would hurt them.

-SAINT JOSEPH’S AT RHODE ISLAND (Atlantic Ten).  Rhody has an outside shot at best, and even winning out to the A10 final may not be enough to get them in the field without the automatic bid.

-FLORIDA AT KENTUCKY (SEC).  Kentucky has probably already wrapped up a #1 seed, but they can finish off a perfect regular season and stay on pace to get the overall #1 with a win today.

-XAVIER AT CREIGHTON (Big East).  Xavier is getting pretty close to the bubble, and they simply cannot afford to lose to a sub-NIT team, even if they are the road team.

-KANSAS AT OKLAHOMA (Big Twelve).  We’ve got two protected seeds going at it.  Neither team really needs the win, but it would be another big win on an already impressive profile for whoever pulls it off.

-KANSAS STATE AT TEXAS (Big Twelve).  Texas is on the bubble, and K State is pretty far outside of it, but if they win this and get a few rounds into the Big Twelve Tournament they should at least get a look.

-CLEMSON AT NOTRE DAME (ACC).  Notre Dame appears to be in good shape for a protected seed, but their weak OOC schedule is an issue, so they need to finish strong in order to secure it.

-DAYTON AT LA SALLE (Atlantic Ten).  Dayton should be in no matter what, but if they drop this game and lose to another sub-tournament team in the conference tourney their profile would take quite a hit.

-STANFORD AT ARIZONA (Pac Twelve).  I think Stanford is way outside the bubble and have not been impressed at all with how they’ve played lately.  If they pull the upset today it’s a different story, but I’m not holding my breath.

-GEORGIA AT AUBURN (SEC).  Georgia actually fell earlier in the year, but they still have a good profile and should be fine for a bid if they can pick this one up today and avoid a loss to a really weak team in the conference tournament.

-UTAH AT WASHINGTON (Pac Twelve).  Utah is on pace to get a protected seed, and should get it so long as they hold serve, which means not losing to non-tournament teams.

-ILLINOIS AT PURDUE (Big Ten).  Both teams are on the bubble and really need this one.  Simple as that.  I like how Purdue has been playing, but their overall body of work is somewhat lacking considering how poor they were at the beginning of the year.

-GEORGE MASON AT VCU (Atlantic Ten).  VCU is still okay, but they have slipped quite a bit since the injury, and really can’t afford to lose at home to a team as weak as George Mason.

-VIRGINIA AT LOUISVILLE (ACC).  Virginia continues to win despite injuries, and should be able to lock up a #1 seed with a win today regardless of what happens next week.  Louisville has had their own issues, and could use a win to help stabilize their profile, but perhaps more importantly get some positive momentum going their way.

-DAVIDSON AT DUQUESNE (Atlantic Ten).  I think Davidson is safe for a bid so long as they avoid bad losses, which means winning today and perhaps winning their first conference tournament game.

-FRESNO STATE AT BOISE STATE (Mountain West).  Boise should be alright so long as they avoid bad losses, which means winning today and winning their first tournament game in order to feel safe.

-IOWA STATE AT TCU (Big Twelve).  Iowa State hasn’t been the best road team, but they have a winnable road game opportunity to close out the regular season.

-DUKE AT NORTH CAROLINA (ACC).  I think Duke can earn a #1 seed if they win today, even if they lose their first conference tournament game.  I’m not hugely impressed with UNC’s profile, but if they pick this one up and win one or two next week they can still end up as a protected seed.

-COLORADO STATE AT UTAH STATE (Mountain West).  Colorado State appears to be relatively safe, but this would still be a nice road win to pick up, especially against a Utah State team that’s pretty respectable at home and who’s won six out of their last seven.

-VANDERBILT AT OLE MISS (SEC).  Ole Miss should be fine if they win this no matter what happens next week.

-NEVADA AT SAN DIEGO STATE (Mountain West).  San Diego State just needs to hold serve and avoid a bad loss tonight.

Under the Radar Games of the Day – Saturday, March 7, 2015: Sacramento State at Northern Arizona and Portland State at Southern Utah

For our latest Championship Week Video Notebook and more, CLICK HERE.

Sacramento State at Northern Arizona, 4:00 PM Eastern, NAU-TV, Fox College Sports-Atlantic, watchbigsky.com

Portland State at Southern Utah, 9:00 PM Eastern, watchbigsky.com

All but a small handful of the conferences that have not yet completed their regular seasons will be wrapping them up today.  Regular season championships and conference tournament seeding will be determined in a multitude of leagues.  For the UTR Game of the Day, there are a ton of games we could have focused on, including first place showdowns in the Sun Belt and Southland conferences, the league leader in the Big West getting its toughest conference road test of the season, and a trip by Yale to Dartmouth with a chance to clinch their first NCAA tournament bid since 1962.  However, despite all of these games, it is impossible to pass over what is going to happen in the Big Sky conference today, and it is so wild and crazy that we could have listed all six conference games as our UTR Game of the Day.  In the end though, we narrowed it down to two prime choices.

The craziness in the Big Sky today starts at the top of the standings, where Eastern Washington, Montana and Sacramento State all enter play today tied at 13-4, with Northern Arizona one game behind at 12-5.  The first place finisher not only clinches the top seed in the conference but also the right to host the entire conference tournament.  Sacramento State (19-9 overall) will be at Northern Arizona (17-13 overall) in a huge game this afternoon.  A win by the Hornets will lock up the top spot and send the Big Sky tournament to Sacramento for the first time ever, where it will be played on a temporary court at “THE WELL”, which can accommodate about 3000 more fans than the tiny Hornets’ Nest that the school plays its home games in.  A loss will open the door for Montana (at Montana State, 9:00 PM) to take the top spot.  Should both Sacramento State and Montana lose, Eastern Washington can then clinch it with a win (at Weber State, 9:00 PM).  Losses by all three teams will create a four way tie (with NAU as well) and give the top seed back to Sacramento State.

As if the wildness at the top of  the Big Sky standings was not enough, there is also a four team battle for the final three spots in the conference tournament that will be decided today.  Portland State, Idaho and Weber State all enter play tied at 8-9 with Southern Utah a game behind at 7-10.  Our second UTR Game of the Day is Southern Utah’s home contest against Portland State.  If the Vikings win, Southern Utah will be eliminated and the field for the Big Sky tournament will be set.  A win by SUU though (which upset Sacramento State at home just two nights ago, creating both of these crazy battles) would guarantee at least a two-way tie with Portland State, and perhaps a three or four way tie if Idaho and/or Weber State also lose (Idaho is at Idaho State while Weber State hosts Eastern Washington, both at 9:00 PM).  The tiebreakers if this happens are so complex that you need an advanced degree in mathematics to figure them out, so the best we can say is keep your eyes on the Conference Tournament Info tab for the field announcement which will be posted as soon as we have it.

Portland State enters tonight’s game at 14-13 overall while Southern Utah is 10-18.  Despite only having 10 wins so far, this season has actually been a remarkable one in Cedar City, Utah.  The Thunderbirds finished 2-27 on the season last year and captured the HOOPS HD Centenary Award as the worst team inn Division I.  To have added at least eight more wins to their total this year, and actually have a shot at making the Big Sky tournament, is a truly remarkable feat.  It has been with great pride that we watched Towson rebound from a Centenary Award and build a competitive program, and it appears that Southern Utah is well on their way to doing the same.  Of course, a win tonight and a berth in the Big Sky tournament will be the icing on the cake for this team’s season.

UPDATE: Thanks to bigskybball.com, the following are the most likely tiebreaker scenarios for the final tournament spots, which among other things appears to guarantee Southern Utah a tournament spot if they win:

Two way tie between Southern Utah and Portland State: Southern Utah in, Portland State out

Three way tie between Southern Utah, Portland State and Weber State: Southern Utah and Portland State in, Weber State out

Three way tie between Southern Utah, Portland State and Idaho: Southern Utah and Portland State in, Idaho out

Four way tie between Southern Utah, Portland State, Idaho and Weber State: Southern Utah, Portland State and Idaho in, Weber State out

Bracket Projections: March 6th

Okay, this was kind of fun despite the technical audio difficulties of the podcast.  The five of us, being Warren Nolan, Chad Sherwood, David Griggs, Joby Fortson and John Stalica, all did separate seed list rankings and submitted them to Chad Sherwood, who much to David Griggs’s despair, acted as the chairman.  He tallied up the votes, and revealed the bracket on air, line by line during the podcast.  None of us knew how the final bracket was going to come out, so watching it was literally like watching Selection Sunday.

Just like the real Selection Committee, the individual participants did not agree with everything that the group decided.  We were pretty much in agreement about the top three lines, but there was some disagreement over whether or not Northern Iowa and Wichita State, much less both of them, deserved #4 seeds with so few quality wins other than beating each other.

The group appeared to be in strong disagreement with who some of the final teams were.  David favors Miami FL, but they ended up missing the field, as did BYU despite their big win at Gonzaga.  Illinois not only made it, but is inside the First Four, whereas some of the panel did not even have them in the field.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Friday, March 6, 2015: Yale at Harvard

Yale at Harvard, 8:00 PM Eastern, American Sports Network

As we enter the final weekend of the regular season for those conferences not already deep into conference tournament play, there is little question as to which game was going to be chosen for tonight’s UTR Game of the Day.  The MAC will be winding up play tonight and determining which teams receive its conference tournament byes.  While that is very important (including a huge game between Buffalo and Bowling Green that could be the difference between a team having to play 2 games and 5 games in the MAC tournament), the showdown in the Ivy League is the clear cut choice for tonight.  The winner of tonight’s Yale at Harvard game will only need to win their regular season finale on Saturday (or have tonight’s loser lose again in their finale) to clinch the automatic bid.  In an absolute worse case scenario, tonight’s winner will guarantee at least a tie for the regular season crown and a berth in a one game playoff.

Yale enters play tonight at 10-2 in conference and 21-8 overall.  Their two conference losses both came at home, to Harvard by 2 points and to Columbia.  Luckily for the Bulldogs, their last two games are on the road.  Yale is led by Justin Sears, though keep an eye on Jack Montague, a strong three-point shooter, and Matt Townsend as options beyond Sears.  If the Bulldogs can pick up the victory tonight, a win at Dartmouth tomorrow night (7:00 PM) will give the Bulldogs their first NCAA tournament appearance since 1962.  This would end the second longest NCAA tournament drought among teams that have been at least once before, with only conference-mate Dartmouth (which has not been in the field since 1959) having a longer streak.

Harvard is looking to lock up its fourth straight Ivy League championship and NCAA tournament berth this weekend.  The Crimson enter play tonight at 10-2 in conference and 20-6 overall.  While they did win at Yale earlier this year, a pair of startling losses in Ivy League play (at home to Dartmouth and at Cornell), plus a handful of close calls that they pulled out, have left us scratching our heads about what appeared to be, in terms of talent at least, not only the best team in the Ivy League but a team with Top 25 potential.  Despite their setbacks this season, the team led by Wesley Saunders, Siyani Chambers and Steve Moundou-Missi needs to simply hold serve in a pair of home games this weekend to return to the Big Dance (Saturday night they host Brown, 6:00 PM, CBS Sports Network).  The atmosphere should be electric in Cambridge tonight, and there is no reason not to expect a tough close game that could come down to the final possessions.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTED REGULAR SEASON GAMES

-TEXAS TECH AT BAYLOR (Big Twelve).  I’ve been really impressed with how Baylor has been playing lately, despite their recent loss at Texas.  I think they’re safe for a protected seed so long as they hold serve in their remaining games.

Bracket Rundown: March 5th

We apologize for the audio technical difficulties early on, but we don’t apologize too strongly because the show is still great.  Chad, David, John, Warren and Joby all submitted seed lists where they ranked the teams 1-through-68, and the results were tabulated by Chad to create the bracket.  No one else on the panel knew the results, so they were seeing them for the first time as the bracket was revealed seed line by seed line.  Again, then consensus is not unanimous, so they discussed and debated each line as it was revealed.
