Under the Radar: February 11th

Chad and David begin by discussing the passing of Jerry Tarkanian, who spent his entire career coaching in UTR conferences.  They also discuss the situation at South Carolina State and talk what closing the school for two years will mean if they want to rejoin div1 upon its reopening.  As always, they run through all the non-major conferences, reveal their UTR Top Ten, and look at this week’s upcoming games.

NEWS AND NOTES

-We will be recording our Under the Radar video podcast tonight.  Hopefully.  Technical difficulties seem to have struck the Griggs household and I’m hoping those get cleared up.  One of the things we will be discussing is what is happening at South Carolina State.  A proposal by the State of South Carolina House of Representatives that would close the institution for two full academic years.  This would mean no classes or students of any kind, which is horrible.  Athletically, it would also mean, as far as I know, that if the school were to reopen, it would have to go through reclassification if they wanted to be a div1 program.  In other words, they would be a transitional team.  Another problem is that schools must have accreditation to participate in the NCAA.  If SC State closes, it will certainly lose its accreditation since it is, you know, closed, and it may take as long as two years to get it back.  That would obviously delay their reentry into div1 even longer.

TONIGHT’S HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-KANSAS STATE AT WEST VIRGINIA (Big Twelve).  West Virginia is safe, but has room for improvement.  K State is on the outside looking in.  The bad news is that it’s tough to win in this conference.  The good news is that if you can win in this conference, you can build your profile in a hurry.

-SYRACUSE AT BOSTON COLLEGE (ACC).  Syracuse is right on the bubble, but as per the Hoops HD rules, if they lose tonight to Boston College they’re automatically ineligible for the…….oh wait.  Nevermind.

-MIAMI FL AT WAKE FOREST (ACC).  We say this all the time, but the kind of road games solid tournament teams need to win are the ones they play against non-NIT teams.

-PENN STATE AT OHIO STATE (Big Ten).  Ohio State appears to be improving and shouldn’t have too much trouble tonight.  Unfortunately this isn’t the kind of game that will boost their profile.

-GEORGIA AT TEXAS A&M (SEC).  This is a HUGELY important game between two teams that are hovering right around the bubble.  Both need the win to establish that they’re better than the other.

-GEORGE WASHINGTON AT DUQUESNE (Atlantic Ten).  To repeat….We say this all the time, but the kind of road games solid tournament teams need to win are the ones they play against non-NIT teams.

-LA SALLE AT VCU (Atlantic Ten).  VCU really needs a win to stop the bleeding and to start the process of establishing they can be an NCAA Tournament caliber team despite the injuries.

-RHODE ISLAND AT SAINT JOSEPH’S (Atlantic Ten).  Personally, I’m not on the Rhody bandwagon despite their bloated conference record, but they are on the radar of virtually everyone else here at Hoops HD.  One thing we can agree on is that even if they are alive and kicking, they won’t be if they lose this one.

-GREEN BAY AT YOUNGSTOWN STATE (Horizon League).  I don’t think Green Bay can get inside the bubble even if they win out, but they can at least flirt with it.

-TCU AT TEXAS (Big Twelve).  As improved as TCU is they’re still just 1-9 in league play.  Texas is falling down fast and can’t afford to lose what is probably one of their more winnable conference games.

-ILLINOIS STATE AT NORTHERN IOWA (Missouri Valley).  UNI continues to roll.  I think they’ll end up as a protected seed, or at least they should.

-INDIANA STATE AT WICHITA STATE (Missouri Valley).  The MVC is a two horse race.  Wichita State is the other horse.  They’re high in the rankings and could end up as a protected seed.

-PITTSBURGH AT LOUISVILLE (ACC).  Louisville can still end up as good as the #2 line.  Pitt is on the outside looking in, but at 5-5 in the conference they could play their way into the picture pretty quickly if they’re able to pick up a few wins like this one.  It’s much easier said than done, though.

-VIRGINIA AT NC STATE (ACC).  Huge game here for NC State.  They need to pull off some big wins to get the attention of the committee, so they really need to come in with a sense of urgency to night.  Should be a great crowd.

-VILLANOVA AT PROVIDENCE (Big East).  Nova has just two losses, but this would be one of their more impressive true road wins if they’re able to pull it off.  Both teams are in really good shape.

-DEPAUL AT SAINT JOHN’S (Big East).  The Johnnies are firmly on the bubble and can’t afford to lose at home to a non-tournament team.

-AIR FORCE AT BOISE STATE (Mountain West).  I’m starting to like this Boise State team, but won’t like them if they fail to win this one.  AFA can be tricky, so they better be ready for them.

-OREGON AT USC (Pac Twelve).  Oregon is way outside the bubble and needs to string some wins together just to get into the picture.

-INDIANA AT MARYLAND (Big Ten).  Maryland is slipping, but still safe.  Indiana is safe as well, but they could still improve their profile by winning some big road games.

-TENNESSEE AT VANDERBILT (SEC).  Tennessee, like Oregon, is outside the bubble and needs to string some wins together just to get into the picture.

-WYOMING AT SAN DIEGO STATE (Mountain West).  Wyoming really blew it over the weekend and needs a big win like this to recover.  It’s much easier said than done, though.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Wednesday, February 11, 2015: Morehead State at Eastern Kentucky

Morehead State at Eastern Kentucky, 9:00 PM Eastern, ESPNU

The Murray State Racers currently sit at 11-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play, with a 3.5 game lead in the West Division standings.  Barring an absolute collapse, they should cruise to the #1 seed in the OVC tournament, earning a double bye into the semifinal round and placing them only two wins away from their sixth OVC tournament title and NCAA bid in the last 14 years.  While the Racers are clearly the class of the conference this year, a battle is brewing in the East Division.  The Ohio Valley Conference gives its second bye to the tournament semifinals to the second best of the two division winners, even if that team does not have the second best record overall.  Entering play tonight, Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky are tied for first place in the East with identical 7-4 conference marks, and with Belmont only half  a game behind at 6-4.  That is why tonight’s nationally televised game between Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky is our UTR Game of the Day.

Morehead State enters tonight’s game with a 12-14 overall record.  Their season includes a practically disastrous month of December where they went 1-6, only picking up a win on December 29 over Central Arkansas.  January and February have been much kinder to the Eagles, and they enter tonight’s contest having won five of their last six including a win at home over the weekend against Belmont.  Karam Mashour has been the player who has stepped up lately for the Eagles.  After receiving only limited playing time through December, he has become a significant contributor, and scored 24, 21, and 22 points respectively in each of the team’s last three victories.

Eastern Kentucky (14-9 overall) made headlines this season back on December 19 when they won at Miami by a score of 72-44, thoroughly crushing the Hurricanes.  The Colonels have slipped up a few times in league play, however, including losses to Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech.  On the other hand, they gave Murray State a great game, losing on the road in overtime.  The Colonels are led by Corey Walden who has scored in double-digits every game so far this season.  They will need another strong effort from him and his teammates tonight if they want to take the lead (for now) in the battle for the #2 seed in the OVC tournament and attempt to defend their crown as Ohio Valley conference tournament champions.

TONIGHT’S HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-KENT STATE AT AKRON (MAC).  Chad Sherwood’s UTR Game of the Day.  CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE

-NOTRE DAME AT CLEMSON (ACC).  This may be a trap game for the Irish as they look to rebound from getting absolutely pasted by Duke over the weekend.  Clemson had some bad losses early to Winthrop and Gardner Webb in the same week.  It was a bad week, because without that, they’d be 16-7 on the year and a very respective 6-5 in the ACC.  As weak as the bubble is, they’d be within reach of it.

-GEORGETOWN AT SETON HALL (Big East).  Both programs still appear to be safe, but both also appear to be backpedaling, especially Seton Hall.  They need to avoid losing and falling to 5-7 in league play.

-MICHIGAN STATE AT NORTHWESTERN (Big Ten).  Michigan State is squarely on the bubble, and every game has a pivotal feel to it.  A win means they pick up a conference road win.  A loss means they fell to a team that won’t even make the NIT.

-KENTUCKY AT LSU (SEC).  LSU is certainly a tournament caliber team (at least most of the time) and this is a huge showcase game for them at home.  Kentucky is the #1 team in the nation, and they’re certainly capable of winning on the road against tournament caliber teams.

-CINCINNATI AT TEMPLE (American).  Temple is inside the bubble and the more they continue to win, the safer they will feel.  Cincinnati is in better shape than Temple right now, at least on paper, but they’re still not in a situation to where they can survive going into a slump and losing four out of five.  There is room for improvement, and any time you can get a quality road win, it helps.

-KANSAS AT TEXAS TECH (Big Twelve).  Kansas can still end up on the #1 line, but saying they need to avoid losses in a game like this…well…goes without saying.

-XAVIER AT MARQUETTE (Big East).  Xavier is in relatively good shape, but they still need wins away from home.  Failing to beat a sub NIT team, which Marquette certainly looks like, will further the argument that Xavier can be world beaters at home, but can’t beat mediocre teams on the road.

-WISCONSIN AT NEBRASKA (Big Ten).  Wisky is knocking on the door of the #1 line.  Nebraska has had a disappointing year, but it’s still not easy to win on the road in a game that is a showcase for the home team.

-ARKANSAS AT AUBURN (SEC).  Arkansas is in good shape and although Auburn is way outside the picture, Arkansas will still get some credit if they’re able to beat them on the road.

-DAYTON AT SAINT LOUIS (Atlantic Ten).  Dayton is inside the bubble, but I wouldn’t go so far to say that they are entirely safe.  They can’t afford to go into the tank, and can really use a road win.  Again, road games aren’t easy to win, but tournament caliber teams need to be able to beat sub-NIT teams on the road.

-NEW MEXICO AT COLORADO STATE (Mountain West).  Colorado State needs to take care of business at home against a non-tournament team.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Monday, February 10, 2015: Kent State at Akron

For our latest Bracket Racket podcast, CLICK HERE.

Kent State at Akron, 7:00 PM Eastern, Time Warner SportsChannel-Ohio/espn3

While perhaps not the utter chaos of the Big South, the Mid-American Conference has certainly been wild so far this season with six teams sitting within one game of each other for the best record in the conference.  This includes a three-way tie at the top of the East Division between Bowling Green, Kent State and Akron, all at 7-3 in league play.  Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day heads to Akron, Ohio for the first of two meetings this season between the hometown Zips and the visiting Golden Flashes, as each team attempts to earn a half point in the two schools’ all sports rivalry, known as the Wagon Wheel Challenge.

Both teams enter tonight’s game with identical 16-7 overall records.  Kent State is looking to bounce back after an earlier six game conference winning streak turned into losing 2 out of 3 the past week and a half.  The Golden Flashes should still be without their leading corer, Jimmy Hall, who has been sidelined for the past week as he battles with mononucleosis.  Kent State will need guards Devareaux Manley, Kris Brewer and Derek Jackson to step up if they are going to get the road victory.

Akron has won 4 of their last 5 games entering tonight’s contest and also scored wins over both USCs during the Charleston Classic this year (Southern Cal and South Carolina).  Pat Forsythe will look to lead the way for the Zips, as he has been in double-digits the last four games including a season-best 20 points back on January 31 against Bowling Green.  If the Zips can hold on against a short-handed Kent State team at home tonight, they have a chance to be in sole possession of first place in the East tomorrow morning, depending on what happens in Bowling Green’s game against Western Michigan.
