National Semifinals: West vs East, South vs Midwest

Last four in: Oregon, Florida State, BYU, Minnesota
First four out: Providence, Colorado, Dayton, St. John’s
Others considered: Georgetown, Missouri, Utah, Clemson, West Virginia, Marquette, Illinois, Indiana, Southern Miss, Tennessee

A few notes about this week’s bracket:
The Big Ten and Big 12 tied for the lead with 7 teams each.  The ACC and Pac-12 each had 6, while the American and Atlantic Ten each had 5.  The SEC and Big East only had three teams each in, while the Mountain West and West Coast had 2 apiece.

You may notice that I have Kansas State and George Washington meeting in the Round of 64.  These two teams did play during the regular season and the committee attempts to avoid such rematches.  However, having this rematch was the only way to avoid having to move a 9 seed down to the 10 line, and I do not believe the committee would make such a move just to avoid a regular season non-conference game rematch.

In the world of crazy matchups, Kansas and SMU are a potential Round of 32 game — pitting Larry Brown against the Jayhawks.  Ohio State and Wisconsin are a potential Round of 32 game as well, which is perfectly legal unless they play a second time in the Big Ten tournament.  Finally, the Spokane Midwest Regional games look to be thrillers, as two of the most dangerous 12/13 seed teams, Green Bay and North Dakota State, are both headed there.

In the ACC, Virginia has clinched the regular seaon title.  Despite not having the non-conference wins of Syracuse or Duke, their performance in ACC play has been incredible and I have a tough time seeing the committee seeding them behind anyone else from their conference.  That is why I have them on the 2 line, with Syracuse joining them and Duke just slightly behind as a 3 seed.  At the bottom of the ACC, Florida State is barely back in my field.  I have been unimpressed with the ‘noles every time I watch them this season, but two top 15 wins away from home and overall three top 50 wins away from home are more impressive than anyone else in the first four out or last four in.

Oklahoma State has also stormed back into my field this week, landing rather safely on the 9 line.  Colorado did not suffer an awful loss this week at Utah…but it was a game they really needed to win.  The Buffs best win away from home was at Colorado State and a bubble team cannot survive without doing better than that.  Dayton also slipped from my field after the loss to St. Joe’s but is close enough to get back in if they can score a few more wins.

The Big East put 7 teams on my board, but only three of them made it in.  Providence was the very last team I left out, and St. John’s and Georgetown are both within striking distance.  Finally, I am still keeping an eye on Marquette.  And when it comes to teams that I am keeping an eye on, both Illinois and Indiana were actually considered this week, albeit only very briefly.  Illinois is home to Michigan and at Iowa this week, while Indiana hosts Nebraska and then travels to Michigan.  If either team can find a way to sweep both of their games this week, they will be very seriously back on the Bubble.

Small Conference Game of the Day – March 2, 2014

LOUISIANA TECH at UAB, 4:00 PM Eastern, No TV

11 conferences have completed their regular seasons so far, and two more (America East and Metro Atlantic) will join that list today.  Conference tournaments tip off tomorrow with the first round of the Patriot League (weather permitting).  For all your information on conference tournament brackets and the HoopsHD Tournament Survival Board, follow this link:

https://hoopshd.com/2014/03/01/conference-tournament-brackets/

Despite these 13 conferences that have ended or will end today, regular season play continues this week in the remaining 19 leagues.  Today’s SCGD comes from a conference that admittedly does not qualify as a true “small conference”, but is a single bid league this year in all likelihood.  Today we head to Birmingham, Alabama for a Conference USA matchup between the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and the UAB Blazers.

Louisiana Tech enters today’s game in a four way tie in the loss column for first place in CUSA.  Middle Tennessee currently holds a half game lead overall at 12-3, with the Bulldogs, Southern Miss and Tulsa all sitting at 11-3.  UTEP, who will host the conference tournament, is only a game behind that group at 10-4.  Overall La Tech sits at 23-6 on the season with a very strong road win at Oklahoma on their resume.  A loss last week at East Carolina has, however, probably destroyed any chance of an at-large bid if they do not win the CUSA tournament.  Louisiana Tech had been playing the last 6+ weeks without their star player, Raheem Appleby, but he did return last game out, playing five minutes against Middle Tennessee.  If he can get more time and begin to return to form in their final three games before the conference tournament, the Bulldogs will clearly be the team to beat.

UAB is currently in 8th place in the 16 team conference at 8-8, while sitting at 18-10 overall.  The Blazers have shown an ability to beat very good teams this year, including holding wins over North Carolina, Southern Miss and Nebraska.  They have also shown an ability to lose to bad teams, with six RPI sub-150 losses including defeats to teams such as Florida International, North Texas and Tulane.  One thing the Blazers do have going for them today — they have never lost to Louisiana Tech, holding an all-time record of 4-0 against the Bulldogs.  They will try to make it 5-0 today and in the process perhaps keep La Tech from winning the Conference USA regular season title.

Small Conference Game of the Day – March 1, 2014

EASTERN ILLINOIS at SIU EDWARDSVILLE, 6:00 PM Eastern, Fox Sports Midwest, live streaming at ovcsports.com

Eleven conferences will end their regular seasons today and announce their conference tournament brackets.  While today’s games may affect the seeding in those 11 brackets, only one of the 11 will see a team eliminated from postseason contention.  The Ohio Valley Conference is a 12 team conference that only takes the top eight teams into its conference tournament with a shot at the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.  Tennessee State, Jacksonville State and Tennessee-Martin have already been eliminated from the field and will be ending their seasons today.  The final team into the field (and the final elimination from the field) will be decided by a pair of games today.

Eastern Illinois enters play today with a one game lead over Austin Peay for the eighth and final OVC tournament spot.  However, Austin Peay holds the tiebreaker edge between the two teams.  The Govs play a 5:00 PM Eastern game at Tennessee-Martin today.  Assuming they win that game (which they should), today’s SCGD between Eastern Illinois and SIUE will decide which team plays on and which team’s season ends.  Eastern Illinois is currently 6-9 in conference and 10-18 overall.  They have certainly not made any serious noise all season, without a single RPI top 250 win.  However, a win at SIU Edwardsville today, whom they beat at home 76-70 a month ago, will keep the Panthers’ season alive for at least one more game.

SIU Edwardsville is currently 7-8 in the OVC and 11-18 overall.  The Cougars did pick up home wins this season over two of the top teams in the OVC, Eastern Kentucky and Murray State.  But the big news for SIUE is that they have already clinched a spot in the OVC tournament.  This marks the first time in program history that the Cougs will be playing in a Division I conference tournament (admittedly they have only been eligible for postseason play for a couple years now).  SIUE just barely missed out on qualifying for the OVC tournament last year.  Today’s game will effect the team’s seeding, but regardless of its result, they will play on.  A victory, however, could knock Eastern Illinois out of the tournament field.

By the way, don’t forget to check out the rest of today’s action here:

Highlighted Games for Saturday, Mar 1st

HAPPY MARCH MADNESS EVERYBODY!!!!!

UMASS AT DAYTON (Atlantic Ten). This is a game that Dayton simply has to win. They’re right on the bubble, and this is a chance to pick up a win against a team who appears to be safely in the field. It is extremely pivotal and crucial.

-CINCINNATI AT UCONN (American). Both teams are solidly in the field and just looking to add another big win to their profiles. Cincinnati is the better team, but it’s still going to be a tough road game.

-VANDERBILT AT TENNESSEE (SEC). Tennessee may be able to get in, but only with a very strong finish, and even that may not be enough.

-TEXAS TECH AT BAYLOR (Big Twelve). A win for Baylor gets them to 7-9 in league play, but as tough as the Big Twelve is, and as hard as their OOC schedule was, I think the Bears are in good shape.

-MISSOURI STATE AT WICHITA STATE (Missouri Valley). Wichita can finish the regular season undefeated with a win in this game, and remain in good shape for a #1 seed.

-LOUISVILLE AT MEMPHIS (American). For decades, this was a bitter conference rivalry before it went on hiatus when Louisville landed in the Big East and Memphis remained in CUSA. It was a short reunion, but it was fun while it lasted. Both teams are in good shape, but both still have a ton of room to improve. Memphis won the first meeting, but Louisville still appears to have the better profile, especially with Memphis coming off the lost to a really weak Houston team.

-PITTSBURGH AT NOTRE DAME (ACC). Pitt doesn’t have many good wins, but they’ve avoided bad losses, so they’re in decent shape.

-COLORADO AT UTAH (Pac Twelve). Colorado looks to be inside the bubble and Utah is on the outside looking in, but the Utes have been very tough at home this year. Colorado could use a decent road win, or just a road win of any kind.

-RICHMOND AT RHODE ISLAND (Atlantic Ten). Richmond is outside the bubble, and I don’t think they’ll be able to play their way in, but I guess they still have a chance.

-NORTH CAROLINA AT VIRGINIA TECH (ACC). They got off to a slow start, but UNC is very hot right now, and they’re coming off a huge week where they beat both their rivals in Duke and NC State.

-LSU AT FLORIDA (SEC). LSU missed a huge opportunity at a quality win at Kentucky last week. They’re outside the bubble, but if they could pull off a road win against the #1 team in the nation, it would probably land them inside of it. Florida, on the other hand, appears to be safely on the #1 line, and are serious national title contenders.

-SYRACUSE AT VIRGINIA (ACC). This game will most likely determine the first place finisher in the ACC. Syracuse can still get a #1 seed, and this would perhaps be their most impressive win of the year being that they’re on the road. I could see Virginia ending up as high as the #2 line if they win this and pick up some more big wins in the ACC Tourney.

-ILLINOIS AT MICHIGAN STATE (Big Ten). Michigan State has been somewhat inconsistent due to their injuries, but they still have a very strong profile and could end up as high as the #2 line.

-UCF AT SMU (American). SMU is having their best season in decades, and shouldn’t have too much trouble picking this one up at home.

-TEXAS AT OKLAHOMA (Big Twelve). Both teams are safely in the field and could end up as protected seeds with a strong finish. It’s a rivalry game, so the atmosphere should be fun.

-BYU AT SAN DIEGO (West Coast). I think BYU will be okay so long as they don’t lose to anyone other than Gonzaga for the rest of the season and tournament.

-OREGON AT USC (Pac Twelve). Oregon is right on the bubble and cannot afford a loss to a weak USC team.

-CREIGHTON AT XAVIER (Big East). Xavier got a much needed road win earlier in the week, and if they could pick up this one they’ll be very safely inside the bubble. As for Creighton, they’re in a position to possibly win the league and end up seeded as high as the #2 line.

-NORTHWESTERN AT NEBRASKA (Big Ten). Nebraska is coming off a loss, but they have a lot of winnable games down the stretch and they should make the field so long as they hold serve. A loss in this one would be very damaging, though.

-SFA AT SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA (Southland). SFA will be on the bubble if they win out, but lose in the conference tournament. They’re also getting close to the top 25.

-SAINT LOUIS AT VCU (Atlantic Ten). Saint Louis is coming off a loss, but they’re still in very good shape. VCU will be jacked for this one. It’s two teams that are safely in the field and who are trying to put another big win on their profile.

-MINNESOTA AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten). Michigan is having a great year, and I still think they could end up with a #2 seed. Minnesota is inside the bubble, but not safely inside. That will, of course, change if they’re able to win this one.

-KENTUCKY AT SOUTH CAROLINA (SEC). Kentucky is coming off a home loss to Arkansas and will be looking to rebound with a conference road win.

-CALIFORNIA AT ARIZONA STATE (Pac Twelve). Both of these teams are in the field, but somewhat close to the bubble, so it does have a pivotal feel to it.

-WESTERN MICHIGAN AT TOLEDO (MAC). Neither team is likely to end up inside the bubble, but these are two of the better teams in the MAC who could both be dangerous in the NCAA Tournament if they end up getting there, so it’s worth watching.

-IOWA STATE AT KANSAS STATE (Big Twelve). K State has been a home court hero this year, but they have managed to get the wins that they need to make the field. Iowa State has a really good profile, and could still end up as high as the #3 line, especially if they’re able to pick up a tough road win like this one.

-COLUMBIA AT HARVARD (Ivy League). Harvard controls their own destiny when it comes to winning the automatic bid and making the field. They may struggle a little bit today, though. But, with a two game lead over Yale, they’ll clinch a bid if they win and Yale loses.

-DENVER AT NORTH DAKOTA STATE (Summit). A win for North Dakota State gets them to a solid 23-6. If they can win the league out right, the committee should give them a serious look given how good their RPI is.

-KANSAS AT OKLAHOMA STATE (Big Twelve). Kansas is a #1 seed caliber team, and Oklahoma State is a talented team who desperately needs to put a big win on their profile. If the Pokes can get this one, they will without question be back on the right side of the bubble.

-GONZAGA AT SAINT MARY’S (West Coast). This is a rivalry game, but it’s lost some of it’s intrigue since Gonzaga is the only team that’s likely to make the field. Their profile could still use some work, so this is a chance for them to pick up a win against a team that’s tough to beat at home.

-SAN DIEGO STATE AT FRESNO STATE (Mountain West). San Diego State will end up as a protected seed if they finish strong.

Under the Radar/Championship Notebook: Feb 28th

On this edition of UTR, Chad and David start off with the disappointing news that Southern, through no fault of the current players or coaches, will be unable to compete in the SWAC Championship or any other postseason tournament including the NCAA Tournament. It is the consensus of this show that it is a raw deal because the people who are largely responsible for not submitting the information to the NCAA aren’t the ones being punished. The players and coaches are.

As we do every week, we run through every conference and project who the favorites are to win the upcoming conference tournaments, and where we feel they’ll be placed in the NCAA Tournament. Several teams have clinched first place finishes already, whereas other conferences like the MAC, Big South, CUSA and Big West are log jammed and entirely up for grabs.

CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK NOTEBOOK

-As hard as this is to believe, the conference tournaments begin this upcoming Monday with the opening round of the Patriot League Tournament.  Although we are not to the conference tournaments, we are to the stage in the season where we are seeing elimination games as teams from the one bid leagues are fighting for spots in those conference tournaments.  In addition to Southern being eliminated due to an NCAA ban, Lamar, Long Island and Kennesaw State were also mathematically eliminated from making their conference tournaments last night.  The win-and-advance/lose-and-go-home stage of the season is here!!  That means we are debuting this year’s edition of the Hoops HD Tournament Survival Board!!  Here it is!!!
