Merit Rankings and Highlighted Games (Dec 17th)

Below are my latest Merit Rankings. Just a reminder that I only rank teams on the quality of their wins and the crappiness of their losses, not their perceived potential or overall strength. Teams like Louisville, Kentucky and Duke appear to be lower in the rankings than what I feel the overall strength of their team is, but until they beat someone that is better than mediocre, they’re going to be ranked behind all of the teams that have actually beaten someone good.

….and just so no one is confused by my notes “notable” loss means “detrimental to a degree.”

This works like a seed list that a selection committee member would put together, so the best team from each conference is included and in ALL CAPS.

Also, below are tonight’s highlighted games.

1. ARIZONA – best wins by far, and many away from home
2. WISCONSIN – very strong wins and no bad losses
3. VILLANOVA – strong wins, including the win against Kansas away from home
4. SYRACUSE – notable wins away from home in Maui

TONIGHT’S HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-PITTSBURGH AT CINCINNATI. Both of these teams need to approach this with a huge sense of urgency. As you can see above, neither have done anything other than beat up on cupcakes yet.

-FLORIDA AT MEMPHIS. Both teams have wins of note, but one gets the sense that Memphis needs this a lot more.

-NEW MEXICO STATE AT NEW MEXICO. New Mexico won on the road earlier this year. New Mexico State should absolutely dominate the WAC, but they haven’t picked up a real signature win out of conference yet, and as weak as the WAC is, they better hope they don’t lose in the conference tournament if they are unable to pick up at least one decent win.

-CHARLOTTE AT FLORIDA STATE. This is an interesting game that both teams need. Both can be good when they want to be, but both also have a tendency to not show up. Charlotte has a noteworthy win against Michigan, but they have a bad loss at Charleston Southern and Michigan is struggling right now.

-MISSOURI STATE AT LOUISVILLE. Missouri State comes into this game with just one loss, and I believe they were without two of their starters for that game. Still, if they want to enter the discussion of being an at-large bid, they need to pull off a win of this caliber. Chances are they’re in over their heads.

-WICHITA STATE AT ALABAMA. Alabama has been disappointing this year, and Wichita has been strong both at home and on the road. This is a game that Bama really needs.

-BELMONT AT DENVER. (SEE HERE:  https://hoopshd.com/2013/12/17/small-conference-game-of-the-day-december-17/

-SAINT BONAVENTURE AT WAKE FOREST. I don’t’ think we’ll see either of these teams in the discussion at the end, but for now they both have good records.

-TOLEDO AT ARKANSAS STATE. Toledo hasn’t beaten anyone good, but they’ve beaten all the teams they’ve played.

-YALE AT PROVIDENCE. A win for the Friars gets them to a modest 9-2.

-NORTH FLORIDA AT MICHIGAN STATE (buy game)

-DELAWARE STATE AT OKLAHOMA STATE (buy game)

-TX ARLINGTON AT OKLAHOMA (buy game)

Small Conference Game of the Day – December 17

Belmont at Denver, 10:00PM Eastern (no TV)

Before getting to tonight’s game, the SCGD and all of us here at HoopsHD would like to tip our hats to the Grambling State Tigers.  Grambling sneaked by one of the worst NAIA teams, Central Baptist, last night to break their 32 game losing streak.  With Cornell now sitting as the lone winless team, however, Grambling is still in line to pick up their second straight Centenary Award as the worst team in Division I.

For tonight’s SCGD, we head to Denver, Colorado for a game between Joe Scott’s Denver Pioneers out of the Summit League and Rick Byrd’s Belmont Bruins.  Denver enters tonight’s game at 4-5 on the season…and they really have not even been that good.  Preseason Denver looked to be a solid contender in the Summit with North Dakota State; however, they have proven to date to be one of the more disappointing teams in all of D1.  They have suffered bad losses to Pepperdine and Mercer, and struggled to beat the likes of Southern, Wyoming, and even Alaska-Anchorage.  Brett Olson and Chris Udofia have led the way so far for the Pioneers, being their only two scorers averaging double digits — although Cam Griffin has been solid as well, averaging 9 points and 7 boards per game.

As much of a disappointment as Denver has been, Belmont has been a surprise.  While we certainly expected the Bruins to contend in the Ohio Valley this year, they in fact flew out of the gate, starting 7-1 including the huge road win at North Carolina.  Their last three games have not gone as well though, losing to VCU, bouncing back for a good win against Middle Tennessee, but then suffering their worst loss of the year last time out, 85-72 to South Dakota State.  J.J. Mann has been the “mann” for Belmont so far, averaging 18.7 points and 5.2 rebounds, both of which lead the team.  The Bruins cannot afford a slip-up tonight, especially with a trip to Lexington, Kentucky on tap this weekend.  They may still be able to put themselves in at-large bid contention, but a loss in Denver will not help if they do not have an automatic bid in hand on Selection Sunday.

Bracket Racket 12/15/13

HHDpodsOn this episode of the Bracket Racket, the crew gets together and recaps what was a relatively slow week in college basketball. We talk about the struggles of some of the top teams, including Kentucky, Kansas, and Michigan State, while applauding Arizona, Wichita State, and others for getting their work done in a satisfactory manner. We also play an elongated round of “Good or Not Good” with some of the undefeated teams, including Villanova, Iowa State, UMass, and Pitt.

Finally, we give you a preview of the top games upcoming this week, get thoroughly confused trying to identify the pre-Christmas holiday tournaments, and lament the lack of an on-fire small-conference team on the horizon this winter.

Small Conference Game of the Day – December 16

Delaware at North Dakota State, 8:00PM Eastern

The Gotham Classic continues tonight as Delaware travels to North Dakota State (local TV in North Dakota only).  The Gotham Classic is a five team full round robin event with these two teams joined by Bryant, Ohio State and Notre Dame (the feature game being this coming weekend’s battle in New York City between Notre Dame and Ohio State).  Tonight’s game is between a pair of teams that are definitely under the radar for most of the country, but could prove to be a very entertaining one.

North Dakota State has made some noise so far this season, most notably last week’s victory at Notre Dame.  They are 7-4 on the season, with their losses being to very good Ohio State, St. Mary’s and Southern Miss teams, as well as falling in their in-state rivalry game to North Dakota.  The Bison are led by Taylor Braun, Marshall Bjorklund, Dexter Werner and TrayVonn Wright.  All four are averaging double figure scoring led by Braun’s 16.6 points per game and 41% shooting from behind the arc.

While North Dakota State has been showing they are the top force in the Summit League, Delaware has very quietly been playing like the second best team in the Colonial, behind their long-time rivals Drexel.  Delaware sits at 5-4 on the season, though their losses include Richmond, Villanova and Notre Dame.  Their schedule has been strong enough that they enter the game with a top 100 KenPom rating, most notably due to 4 of their 5 wins having come on the road.  Tonight’s game is the start of a very tough week for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, as they will travel from Fargo to Columbus to take on Ohio State Wednesday night before playing Bryant in New York City on Saturday in the final game of the Gotham Classic.  The Blue Hens have been led so far by Devon Saddler who is averaging 23.2 point per game.  A win tonight will be their biggest of the season so far, but given the ability to win road games that they have shown so far, North Dakota State should not overlook this team.

Small Conference Game of the Day – December 15

UC-Santa Barbara at San Diego, 5:00 PM Eastern

On our way back from our visit to the Hawaiian Islands last night, the SCGD is making a stop tonight in San Diego to see the Toreros host the early season favorites in the Big West, the Gauchos of UCSB (FSN-San Diego and free streaming via the USD web site).  San Diego is coming off a heart-breaking one point loss to cross-town rival San Diego State last week and is looking for a quality home win before they head into conference play beginning at the end of this month.

UCSB, on the other hand, has been one of a handful of teams that the SCGD and our Under the Radar podcasts has been watching closely all season.  They originally caught our attention with a dominating 86-65 win at UNLV.  They have also scored a very good home win against Cal.  Their schedule to date has also featured games against UCLA, Utah State and Colorado (all losses).  They still have a handful of games left before Big West play, though tonight’s game and a return trip to Utah State are their two toughest by far.  If they can get through the rest of their non-conference slate without any blemishes, their big wins to date should be enough to keep them on our radar the rest of the season.

Small Conference Game of the Day – December 14

In a week when we have been discussing non-conference rivalries (see the podcast below), today’s SCGD brings us to a battle to determine the best college basketball team in a single state…the State of Hawai’i.  At midnight eastern time tonight (no TV or streaming), the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors out of the Big West will battle the Division II Chaminade Silverswords in a battle of the two best collegiate teams in Hawai’i.

What is even more significant about tonight’s game is where it is being played.  Chaminade and Hawai’i are located less than a mile apart in the City of Honolulu.  However, tonight’s game heads west…to the westernmost of the large islands and the City of Lihue on Kaua’i.  With only one college located on Kaua’i, and that being a community college with no athletics programs, to the best of the SCGD’s knowledge, this is the first collegiate game ever played on Kaua’i, and  the westernmost game ever played within one of the 50 states.  The game will be played at a high school gymnasium, interestingly known locally as the “RaiderDome”.

Chaminade enters tonight’s game 4-3 overall, with their only 3 losses having come to Division I foes in the Maui Invitational.  Hawai’i is 6-2, with their only losses coming to New Mexico State and Missouri.  This is their last game before the Diamond Head Classic which they host beginning December 22.  The overall series stands at 4-1 in Hawai’i’s advantage.  Chaminade’s lone victory ocurred on December 17, 1982….six days before the Silverswords knocked off Ralph Sampson and the No.1 ranked Virginia Cavaliers in one of the most noteable regular season upsets of all time.
