Small Conference Game of the Day – November 13, 2013

The Centenary Award.  An annual award handed out by the staff here at HoopsHD.com to the worst team in college basketball.  It began three seasons ago when Centenary College in Louisiana finished the season 1-29 and then promptly drop down out of Division I hoops after years upon years of struggling to be competitive at this level.  In 2012, the award went to the Towson Tigers (who have had a remarkable turnaround since then which will certainly be highlighted in an upcoming SCGD) and last season it was given to the NCAA record 0-28 Grambling State Tigers.

This season Grambling is among the favorites to repeat, though South Carolina State, UMBC, UMKC, and Alabama State may also be in the mix as well.  However, today’s SCGD column is not about this year’s Centenary Award.  Rather, it is about the team that started it all, the Centenary Gentleman.

The Gents biggest claim to fame came back between 1972-1976 when NBA Hall of Famer Robert Parish played for the school….if in fact he ever did play there. The NCAA does not acknowledge any of his statistics because he and five other players were ruled ineligible academically, a ruling Centenary never agreed with.  As a result, Parish played for four seasons, averaging 21.6 points and 16.9 rebounds, and leading the school to an 87-21 record during his career.  But according to the NCAA’s official statistics, which only count the statistics of eligible players, Parish never played a game.

Recent years have been much more difficult for the Gents, though since their drop down in division they did post a .500 11-11 record in 2011-12 before dropping back last season to 9-15.  Tonight, they kick off their 2012-13 season with a road trip to take on the Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech.  Tech began their season Friday night with a loss at St. Mary’s, though they still look to be one of the top teams (on paper at least) in the new 16-team Conference USA.  The Gents should not be much of a problem for them tonight.  However, the SCGD could not pass up the chance to highlight Centenary during one of two games against D1 opponents they will play this season (they are also at Louisiana-Lafayette on December 17).

Highlighted Games for Tuesday, November 12th

-MIT AT HARVARD (***GAME OF THE DAY!!!***). I’m a little disappointed that Chad did not make this his SCGD. Therefore, I’m giving it top billing.

-KENTUCKY AT MICHIGAN STATE. A #1 vs #2 matchup is always fun. Both are solid teams, both look to be aiming for the #1 line, and winning a game like this is what can get a team up there.

-KANSAS AT DUKE. Pretty much the same scenario as Kentucky vs Michigan State. Two teams that could end up being #1 seeds who can get a huge win.

VCU AT VIRGINIA. Both teams are ranked and both appear to be solid tournament teams. This is a great early season matchup between two contrasting styles. It should be fun to watch.

-FLORIDA AT WISCONSIN. Wiscy looked very good in their opener against Saint John’s, whereas a very shorthanded Florida team struggled against North Florida in their first game. It could be a long night for the Gators.

-DENVER AT CALIFORNIA. I believe Denver is an NCAA Tournament caliber team. This is the kind of game they need to win if they want to end the season inside the bubble. It’s early, but it’s still a high stakes game.

WEST VIRGINIA AT VIRGINIA TECH. These two teams haven’t always played. Three or four years ago it would have been a fun game. This year, VA Tech looks really bad and West Virginia is still trying to get themselves back to being a tournament caliber team.

-SOUTH CAROLINA TAT BAYLOR. Baylor beat what appears to be a pretty good Colorado team in their season opener. South Carolina won their opener as well, but this will be a much tougher test.

-NC STATE AT CINCINNATI. NC State appears to be down this year, and Cincinnati is a team that I feel is underrated.

-MANHATTAN AT COLUMBIA. A crosstown matchup between two teams that won their opener. Keep an eye on Manhattan. I think they’re a solid tournament caliber team. The problem is that their schedule is weak so their margin for error is small.

-OHIO AT OHIO STATE. This is a buy game, but it’s interesting enough to warrant mention with the other games. Ohio has been a consistent MAC contender, but they lost four starters from last year’s 24 win team and appear to be at the bottom of their talent cycle. Ohio State, once again, is a top ten caliber team.

-SOUTH ALABAMA AT TEXAS. Both teams are 1-0 and Texas beat a pretty good Mercer team in their first game.

-MONTANA AT MINNESOTA. A pretty good Big Sky team going up against a rebuilding Big Ten team.

-DREXEL AT ILLINOIS STATE. I like this Drexel team and think they’re worth keeping an eye on. This would be a nice early season road win.

-TENNESSEE AT XAVIER. I think Tennessee is a tournament caliber team, and I think Xavier could be. It’s a good early season game that should allow us to learn something about both teams.

BUY GAMES

-Long Island @ Indiana

-Hofstra @ Louisville.

-Grambling @ Marquette.

-Fresno State @ Pitt. Not much is expected of Fresno, but they did win their opener.

-South Carolina State @ Michigan.

-Morgon State @ Towson. A Baltimore crosstown matchup.

-Fordham @ Syracuse.

-Utah Valley @ Oklahoma State. Utah Valley has won their first two games. If they can win this one, then they’ll have my attention.

-Western Illinois @ Nebraska.

-Quinnipiac @ La Salle. La Salle needs to rebound from their opening loss to Manhattan.

-Oakland @ UCLA.

-UCSB @ UNLV.

Small Conference Game of the Day – November 12, 2013

For today’s SCGD, we turn to the 12 Noon Eastern game in Kennesaw, Georgia between Warren Wilson and Florida International.  This game is part of the Kennesaw State Tournament, a 5 team round-robin exempt event that has been going on for the past few days.  FIU enters the game with a record of 1-2, having previously defeated Kennesaw State while losing to both Eastern Kentucky and Youngstown State.

Florida International is one of six teams that are ineligible for the NCAA tournament this season due to low APR scores.  The other five are New Orleans, out of the Southland Conference, and four teams from the SWAC: Alabama State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Grambling State, and Mississippi Valley State.  Despite being ineligible this year, FIU has transitioned from the Sun Belt to Conference USA.  The Golden Panthers have been led so far by senior Rakeem Buckles, who has notched a double-double in each of his first three games, earning Conference USA Players of the Week honors.

Warren Wilson is a small four year school located near Asheville, North Carolina.  They are not an NCAA school, instead belonging to the USCAA, competing in Division II there.  Last season they entered the USCAA national championship tournament as the #9 seed out of 10 teams…and proceeded to win the entire thing, amazingly enough defeating the #10 seed host school Penn State Fayette in the finals.  The Owls are 2-3 so far on the season, having been blown out by Kennesaw State yesterday afternoon, 92-48.  After their game today, they have contests against both Eastern Kentucky and Youngstown State to conclude the tournament.

Small Conference Game of the Day – November 11, 2013

Welcome to the inaugural Small Conference Game of the Day for the 2013-14 college basketball season.  This is where we highlight teams from conferences outside of the majors, and very often outside even the top mid-majors.  These teams are often unlikely to be playing in the NCAA tournament, but we use this space to highlight their games and discuss them more in depth.

Tonight’s game is a throwback to one of the SCGOD’s favorite conferences, the now defunct Great West.  The GWC played four full seasons as a Division I conference, sending their tournament champion each year to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT).  Utah Valley University hosted the Great West tournament in Orem, Utah during its first two seasons, with Chicago State hosting the final two.  While Utah Valley twice won the regular season championship, they failed to win the conference tournament on any of their four tries.  However, in perhaps the highlight moment for the Great West, UVU earned an at-large bid into the CIT after the 2011-12 season, their lone postseason bid since becoming a member of Division I.

At 9:00PM Eastern tonight, Utah Valley hosts North Carolina A&T out of the MEAC (UVU-TV, free streaming at http://www.uvu.edu/uvutv).  This is UVU’s second game of the season, having beaten IUPUI 74-66 on Friday night, and coming just one day before a trip to Stillwater to take on Oklahoma State.  UVU was led in their first game by Holton Hunsaker, who scored 18 points, and redshirt freshman Zach Nelson, who scored a double-double in his first career game.  North Carolina A&T also won its first game of the season, defeating non-D1 Greensboro College.  Their star player in that game was Richaud Pack, a freshman who dropped 30 points.

While the Great West no longer exists, and the court in Orem, Utah will be proclaiming how UVU is now a member of the WAC, the SCGOD still fondly recalls the four years of its existence.  But, as with all things, time has brought change.  And for the Wolverines of Utah Valley University, they will for the first time ever this season be competing for an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament — and a chance to cut down the nets in the WAC finals this year will be well worth not having done so during their four journeys through the Great West.

Bracket Racket – 11/10/13

HHDpodsWelcome back to the Bracket Racket, the only combination videocast and podcast covering the entirety of college basketball! On tonight’s show, Galen, David, and Kyle take you through an intriguing first weekend of hoops action, focusing attention first on the silly yet effective dramatics of John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats as they take their behemoth parade of talent into Chicago for an early-season clash with stalwart Michigan State. We then turn our gaze to a smorgasboard of early-season clashes between notable teams, including Oregon’s Korean-set encounter with Georgetown, UConn’s surprising squeaker over Maryland, and Alabama’s offensive dismantling at the hands of Oklahoma.

We also take a look at the somewhat rough weekend start for the new Los Angeles-area coaches, and also examine the struggles that the Pac 12 ran into during its first weekend of play. Also examined are the first edition of the “WTF Games”. Finally, we focus on the upcoming tilts for the next couple of days, including UK-Michigan State, Kansas-Duke, Florida-Wisconsin, and Denver-California.

Highlighted Games for Monday, November 11th

HIGHLIGHTED MATCH UPS

-AKRON AT SAINT MARY’S. SMC beat a pretty good LA Tech team in their first game. Akron won their first game as well. This is a game between two good teams that are off to a good start.

-NEW MEXICO STATE AT HAWAI’I. The two old WAC conference foes face off. New Mexico State had a disappointing loss in their opener and Hawaii is trying to improve to 3-0.

-SFNY AT FLORIDA ATLANTIC. SFNY is looking for their second road win of the year. They had a nice win against Miami FL the other night.

-KENT STATE AT TEMPLE. These are two teams to keep an eye on throughout the year.

-BELMONT AT RICHMOND. Both seemed poised to have big years, and both managed wins in their first game. Both also are in need of notable wins, especially Belmont, because they won’t have many chances to impress the committee as they get into conference play.

-RHODE ISLAND AT SMU. SMU has been identified as a fringe tournament team. Both teams won their opener.

-RUTGERS AT UAB. Both teams won their opener, although both beat weak teams.

-COLORADO STATE AT GONZAGA. Colorado State is in major rebuilding mode, but a win tonight would really give them a huge boost. Gonzaga looked really impressive the other night in their opener against a pretty decent Bryant team.

-LONG BEACH STATE AT ARIZONA. Arizona shouldn’t have too much trouble winning this, although Long Beach will be one of the better teams in the Big West this year.

-BYU AT STANFORD. These are two teams that look to be good enough to make the NCAA Tournament, so a win for either one would be big.

-WESTERN KENTUCKY AT WICHITA STATE. This is the opener for both teams. WKU is one of the better teams in the Sun Belt who needs to pick up good wins out of conference if they want to impress the committee. Wichita State is coming off an improbable Final Four appearance and should be well within the bubble at the end of the season.

BUY GAMES

-Yale at UConn. Both teams won their first game.

-UMKC at Creighton.
