Bracket Racket – 11/10/13

HHDpodsWelcome back to the Bracket Racket, the only combination videocast and podcast covering the entirety of college basketball! On tonight’s show, Galen, David, and Kyle take you through an intriguing first weekend of hoops action, focusing attention first on the silly yet effective dramatics of John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats as they take their behemoth parade of talent into Chicago for an early-season clash with stalwart Michigan State. We then turn our gaze to a smorgasboard of early-season clashes between notable teams, including Oregon’s Korean-set encounter with Georgetown, UConn’s surprising squeaker over Maryland, and Alabama’s offensive dismantling at the hands of Oklahoma.

We also take a look at the somewhat rough weekend start for the new Los Angeles-area coaches, and also examine the struggles that the Pac 12 ran into during its first weekend of play. Also examined are the first edition of the “WTF Games”. Finally, we focus on the upcoming tilts for the next couple of days, including UK-Michigan State, Kansas-Duke, Florida-Wisconsin, and Denver-California.

Highlighted Games for Monday, November 11th

HIGHLIGHTED MATCH UPS

-AKRON AT SAINT MARY’S. SMC beat a pretty good LA Tech team in their first game. Akron won their first game as well. This is a game between two good teams that are off to a good start.

-NEW MEXICO STATE AT HAWAI’I. The two old WAC conference foes face off. New Mexico State had a disappointing loss in their opener and Hawaii is trying to improve to 3-0.

-SFNY AT FLORIDA ATLANTIC. SFNY is looking for their second road win of the year. They had a nice win against Miami FL the other night.

-KENT STATE AT TEMPLE. These are two teams to keep an eye on throughout the year.

-BELMONT AT RICHMOND. Both seemed poised to have big years, and both managed wins in their first game. Both also are in need of notable wins, especially Belmont, because they won’t have many chances to impress the committee as they get into conference play.

-RHODE ISLAND AT SMU. SMU has been identified as a fringe tournament team. Both teams won their opener.

-RUTGERS AT UAB. Both teams won their opener, although both beat weak teams.

-COLORADO STATE AT GONZAGA. Colorado State is in major rebuilding mode, but a win tonight would really give them a huge boost. Gonzaga looked really impressive the other night in their opener against a pretty decent Bryant team.

-LONG BEACH STATE AT ARIZONA. Arizona shouldn’t have too much trouble winning this, although Long Beach will be one of the better teams in the Big West this year.

-BYU AT STANFORD. These are two teams that look to be good enough to make the NCAA Tournament, so a win for either one would be big.

-WESTERN KENTUCKY AT WICHITA STATE. This is the opener for both teams. WKU is one of the better teams in the Sun Belt who needs to pick up good wins out of conference if they want to impress the committee. Wichita State is coming off an improbable Final Four appearance and should be well within the bubble at the end of the season.

BUY GAMES

-Yale at UConn. Both teams won their first game.

-UMKC at Creighton.

Highlighted Games for Saturday, Nov 9th

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-USC UPSTATE AT VIRGINIA TECH. USC Upstate is one of the better teams in the Atlantic Sun and this is a chance for them to pick up a win against what appears to be a weak Virginia Tech team.

-BALL STATE AT INDIANA STATE. Indiana State may be a fringe tournament team and is worth keeping an eye on.

-MANHATTAN AT LA SALLE. Manhattan is one of the better teams in the Metro Atlantic, and La Salle appears to be a solid at-large caliber team. It would be a statement win for Manhattan if they end up pulling this off.

-NORTHERN IOWA AT OHIO. Both of these teams have potential. A win would be a great way for both teams to start the season.

-TEMPLE AT PENN (Big Five). Big Five action. Neither look to be likely tournament teams, but it’s early and you never know.

-BRYANT AT GONZAGA. This is a buy game, but Bryant does appear to be one of the better teams in the NEC and it’s worth at least pointing that out.

BUY GAMES

-CofC at Louisville. Louisville actually played at CofC last year, but for all practical purposes it’s a buy game.

-IPFW at Dayton.

-Emporia State (nondiv1) at Wichita State.

-Lamar at Butler

-Alabama A&M at New Mexico
