CIT Game of the Day – March 23

The CIT kicks back into action today with a slate of six Second Round games.  Today’s schedule is as follows:

Eastern Kentucky (25-9) @ Evansville (19-14) 1:30 pm
Rider (19-14) @ East Carolina (19-12) 5:00 pm
Canisius (19-13) @ Youngstown State (18-15) 7:05 pm
Tulane (20-14) @ Bradley (17-16) 8:00 pm
Illinois-Chicago (18-15) @ Northern Iowa (19-14) 8:00
Air Force (18-13) @ Weber State (27-6) 9:00 pm

All times are Eastern and all games are streamed live at watchcollegeinsider.com.

Our featured CIT game today is the first game on the slate, Eastern Kentucky at Evansville.  Eastern Kentucky was the surprise story in the Ohio Valley Conference this season, putting together a 12-4 conference record that gave them the second best record in the conference (though the tournament #3 seed due to the conference’s divisional format).  They even picked up a win at Murray State during regular season play.  However, the semifinals of the conference tournament saw them rematched with Murray and falling, 83-71.  The Colonels did bounce back in their first round CIT game, scoring a 69-62 road win over Gardner-Webb, and currently sit at 25-9 overall.

Eastern Kentucky’s opponent today is the Purple Aces of Evansville.  Evansville, following their first round win over Tennessee State, sits at 19-14 on the season.  They finished 10-8 in the Missouri Valley Conference but fell 51-50 in the quarterfinals of the MVC tournament to Indiana State.  They will be attempting to secure their second straight win over an Ohio Valley team this afternoon, a win which would advance the Aces to the quarterfinal round of the CIT.

CIT Game of the Day – March 20

The CIT Game of the Day presents:  The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.

Tonight’s feature game comes from the Windy City as Chicago State travels cross-town to battle the Flames of Illinois-Chicago.  UIC is out of the Horizon League where they put together a 17-15 season and tied for fifth place in their conference.  But UIC is not the reason this game is featured.  UIC is taking on a team that went 11-21 on the season but captured the sole automatic bid to the CIT, Great West Conference tournament champion Chicago State.

THE GOOD:  Chicago State had never won a conference tournament before their Great West championship this season.  The Cougars had never played in a postseason tournament.  The team wasn’t even eligible for postseason play last season when they received a ban due to poor APRs.  But the school has turned things around, advancing to the postseason and posting perfect APRs to regain their eligibility.  Next season, Chicago State, a school that was more or less thrown out of the Summit League a few years ago, will move on to the WAC and be able to take a shot at advancing to even bigger postseason tournaments.

THE BAD: Maybe this is more the Sad than the Bad, but barring an upset victory by Chicago State tonight, this will be the final men’s basketball game ever played by a team from the Great West Conference.  As we documented several times this season, the Great West will cease to exist after this year.  The conference never produced a team that even sniffed at an NCAA tournament bid, but did produce some exciting games and exciting conference tournaments during its short existence.

THE UGLY:  Chicago State enters tonight’s game at 11-21 overall.  That is a .344 winning percentage on the year.  In the entire history of Division I men’s basketball, prior to this season, the worst winning percentage for a team playing in postseason was 1996 Central Florida’s NCAA tournament team that had a .357 winning percentage.  In other words, the record books need to be opened tonight as Chicago State becomes the worst team (in terms of winning percentage) ever to play in the postseason.

History will be made tonight in Chicago.  If you are actually interested in seeing it, or any of the other CIT games on tap for night, here is the schedule:

Fairfield (19-15) @ Kent State (20-13) 7:00 pm
Elon (21-11) @ Canisius (18-13) 7:00 pm
North Dakota (16-16) @ Northern Iowa (18-14) 8:00 pm
Green Bay (18-15) @ Bradley (16-16) 8:00 pm
South Alabama (17-12) @ Tulane (19-14) 8:00 pm
Chicago State (11-21) @ Illinois-Chicago (17-15) 8:00 pm
Oral Roberts (18-14) @ UT Arlington (19-13) 8:30 pm
Cal Poly (18-13) @ Weber State (26-6) 9:00 pm
High Point (17-13) @ UC Irvine (20-15) 10:30 pm
Air Force (17-13) @ Hawaii (17-14) 12:00 am

All times are Eastern at all games are streamed live at watchcollegeinsider.com.

CIT Game of the Day – March 19

Brought to you by the Makers of the SCGD, welcome to the first ever installment of the CIT Game of the Day!

The CIT (CollegeInsiders.com Tournament) is a 32 team postseason college basketball tournament for schools that meet certain criteria.  In order to qualify, you must have not been selected to one of the three other tournaments (NCAA, NIT, and CBI), must not play in one of the power conferences (currently the ACC, Big East, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac Twelve and SEC), and must have an overall record of .500 or better.  Games against non-D1 competition do count towards qualification for the CIT.  The only exception to the .500 rule is in the event the single automatic bid winner is under .500.  The CIT gives an automatic bid to the Great West Conference tournament champion in the event that team is not selected for the NCAA or NIT.  (This is the final year of the automatic bid as the Great West will cease to exist after this season).

The CIT plays all games on campus sites.  It also does not use a set bracket.  Rather, after each round of play, the tournament organizers set the following round’s matchups.

Tonight, 6 of the 16 first round games will be played.  The schedule is as follows:

Eastern Kentucky (24-9) @ Gardner Webb (21-12) 7:00 pm
Savannah State (19-14) @ East Carolina (18-12) 7:00 pm
Rider (18-14) @ Hartford (17-13) 7:00 pm
Oakland (16-16) @ Youngstown State (17-15) 7:05 pm
Boston University (17-12) @ Loyola MD (21-11) 7:30 pm
Tennessee State (18-14) @ Evansville (18-14) 8:00 pm

All times are Eastern and all games are streamed live at watchcollegeinsider.com.

Tonight’s featured games is the 7:00 PM tipoff in West Hartford, Connecticut between the Rider Broncs out of the Metro Atlantic and the Hartford Hawks of the America East.  Rider finished tied for second place in the MAAC, but was upset in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament by Fairfield.  Hartford finished in fourth place in the America East, but received the #3 seed in the conference tournament due to Boston University being ineligible for the conference’s automatic NCAA bid.  Hartford was also upset in their quarterfinals, going down to 6th seeded UMBC.

Tonight’s game will feature the first ever postseason Division I game for the Hartford men’s basketball program, after 28 seasons as a D1 school.  A win tonight will also give them their 18th victory of the season, tying their best D1 performance ever.  Finally, it would double their win total from last year, when they only managed 9 victories.  Rider, on the other hand, is trying to bounce back from their conference tournament upset.  They had won five game in a row to close the regular season before Fairfield knocked them off.  The CIT will give both teams a chance to end the season on more positive notes than the sour taste of conference tournament upsets.

HOOPS HD FINAL BRACKET PROJECTIONS: Selection Sunday, March 17th

68 TEAMS REMAIN!!! The Big Ten Championship game will have no impact on what we think the final bracket will look like. The link is below.

http://www.crimsoncast.com/2013/03/bracket-report-final-edition/

NOTES

-We think Indiana is more accomplished than Louisville. They won at Michigan, at Michigan State and at Ohio State. Louisville doesn’t have one win as good as that away from home, let alone three. I can see them giving the #1 overall to Louisville and sending them to Indianapolis instead of Indiana simply because Louisville finished first in the Big East and won the conference tournament. They went for the double, so to speak, and the committee has valued that in the past.

-We think Kansas has a far better team than both Duke and Miami, FL. However, profile wise, Duke’s is very good. Miami finished ahead of them, and beat them during the year, and won at NC State and Maryland, which are two places Duke didn’t win, and then went for the double when they won the conference tournament. It’s not unanimous, but the consensus was that we just don’t think they can justify putting Duke ahead of Miami, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kansas ahead of both. They can only take one, though, and I’m guessing it will be Miami.

-Tennessee would have been the last team in, but we took them out when Ole Miss won the SEC.  La Salle was another team we were undecided on, but decided the committee wouldn’t value them as much.

-We think Middle Tennessee is a solid selection as an outright first place finisher with a solid RPI. Boise has a good profile, and is looks pretty good on the court as well.

-We’re not a huge fan of Saint Mary’s, but after looking at them closely I can see the committee valuing their road record, and they did beat Creighton and had a win against BYU on the road, who isn’t a tournament team, but is tough to beat at home.

-Kentucky is a very tough call. They were the last team in. They do have the injury, but two of their best wins came after they lost Noel. Most of their good wins came at home against teams that did not play well on the road, but we just had a feeling the committee would give them credit for those anyway. I will not be disappointed if they’re left out. I’d like to see La Salle in instead, but we just have a feeling that the committee will take them.

-North Carolina is grossly overseeded in this projection. We just have a feeling that the committee will overvalue them.

Projections are just that. Projections. I’m not a fortune teller. There is no science to it. If you look at all the people that project brackets, and there are a few hundred people who do this, not one of them was ever actually on the selection committee. They’ll be the first ones to tell you that it just can’t be predicted. It’s not a science. It’s a subjective process that’s done by a committee. If you’ve ever been on any sort of committee before, you know that there is nothing scientific about how they work.

Good luck to your teams!!!

On the 12th Day of Conference Tourneys, the Buffet gave to me…

Does the Buffet rank?

Last Stand for Waiting Liners…

WAC: A tire fire

Big Conference Kick Offs

Buffet v Experts

Mo’ of Momo

A wealth of auto bidding

Top Seeded Carnage

Scanning the scene

Huge Buffet

Killer Top Seeds

Ok, Readership… here we are. The Final Buffetology before predictions are meaningless, and the actual bracket matters.  With the Ole Miss SEC tournament championship, seems like it is coming down to Middle Tenneseee, La Salle, Kentucky and Tenessee for 2 spots. The Buffet sees it as a Tennessee sweep, we waffled on Kentucky, because, well they are Kentucky and having them in Dayton could mean big ratings for Tru.  But Kentucky lost to Tennessee without Noel by 30, and Kentucky got their best wins without Noel, but those wins are only as good as Tennesse’s best, and then Tenn has the big NC over Wichita St, 2 more road/neutral wins and only 1 more loss overall against a tougher schedule – now KenPom and the BPI like Kentucky better, but that 30 point loss without Noel really sticks with us.  If we’re wrong, we’re guessing that’s where….

Here it comes, and don’t forget to check out http://bracketproject.50webs.com/rankings.html later tonight to see how we stacked up (unless, we did poorly, then don’t check it) under abbrevation: HHD

Last 4:
Kentucky

La Salle

Maryland

Virginia

If you are still counting:

UMass

Charlotte

The ball is tipped
and there you are
you’re running for your life
you’re a shooting star
And all the years
no one knows
just how hard you worked
but now it shows…
(in) ONE SHINING MOMENT, IT’S ALL ON THE LINE
ONE SHINING MOMENT, THERE FROZEN IN TIME

But time is short
and the road is long
in the blinking of an eye
ah that moment’s gone
And when it’s done
win or lose
you always did your best
cuz inside you knew…
(that) ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU REACHED DEEP INSIDE
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU KNEW YOU WERE ALIVE

Feel the beat of your heart
feel the wind in your face
it’s more than a contest
it’s more than a race…

And when it’s done
win or lose
you always did your best
cuz inside you knew…
(that) ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU REACHED FOR THE SKY
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU KNEW
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU WERE WILLING TO TRY
ONE SHINING MOMENT….
