CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK NOTEBOOK

-271 TEAMS REMAIN!!!

For a list of all of today’s action, see Chad’s viewing guide linked below…

https://hoopshd.com/2013/03/08/conference-tournament-viewing-guide-march-8-2013/

-Stetson and SC Upstate won easily in the second pair of Atlantic Sun quarterfinal games. Upstate looked very good and Mercer could be in for a battle tonight. Playing at home will give them a big advantage. FGCU is the favorite over Stetson, but that game won’t be a cakewalk either as the two split the regular season series.

-We had mostly chalk in the Big South quarters as the better seeded team won won three of the games, but there was one big upset in Liberty’s win over High Point. Winthrop also threw a scare into Charleston Southern, but they ended up pulling away at the end. VMI and Gardner Webb also won and advanced to the semis.

-Drake took down Bradley and Missouri State topped Southern Illinois in the opening round of Arch Madness. The Missouri Valley may not be the best conference, but they do have the best name of any tournament. There is a ton of parity in this league, so it should be great from the quarterfinals on. Illinois State is a team to watch.  They stumbled down the stretch and they stumbled worse at the beginning of conference play, but they are capable of beating anyone in the league. Creighton and Wichita State are likely safely in the field even if they lose in the quarterfinals, and many times a team in that situation will come out flat. It will be interesting to see what they do today.

-The Semis of the Ohio Valley are set, and it’s the four best teams in the league. Tennessee State will face Belmont. The tournament is in Nashville, so both of these teams are playing in their own backyard. Belmont clearly appeared to have the best season and profile, and will get a serious look at an at-large if they don’t win the conference tournament, but they’re hardly a lock.  They did split the regular season with Tennessee State with each winning at home. Tonight, they’re both in their home city in the very high stakes winner-take-all rubber match. I’m actually very excited for this one.

Eastern Kentucky vs Murray State is the other game. EKU beat the crap out of Murray at Murray earlier this season, and Murray also fizzled down the stretch. I think once Murray realized the conference tournament was their only way into the NCAAs they kind of quit on the season. It will be interesting to see what happens tonight. Any of these four teams could win the tournament.

-LMU has tripled their conference win total in the WCC Tournament with two exciting wins. Unfortunately for them, they’ve only advanced as far as the quarterfinals. The WCC lets everyone in, but if you finish at the bottom you have a lot of ground to cover. They’ll face Santa Clara tonight for the right to take on Gonzaga. BYU will face San Diego in the other game.

-The Horizon quarterfinals are tonight. Wright State will face Youngstown State for the right to take on Detroit. Green Bay will go up against UIC for the right to face Valparaiso. Valpo is the first place team, so the quarters and semis are on their court. There is also a lot of parity in this league. Both quarterfinal games today feature teams that split the season series. Valpo and Detroit appear to be the favorites, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone come out of the quarters and advance to the final.

-The Metro Atlantic opening round also gets underway. Maris and Siena are traditional rivals and they’ll face each other in the 8v9 game. Fairfield will face Saint Peter’s in the other game.  The top five teams are seperated by just two games, so this one could turn into a free for all.  The regualar season seemed to have that feel.

-The Sun Belt Opening Round is today. It seems as though that more often than not, the tournament winner is a team that doesn’t get a bye. Western Kentucky came out of nowhere to win a year ago. They’ll face Monroe today. Louisiana Lafayette vs North Texas and Florida Atlantic vs Troy are other two games. Middle Tennessee ran away with this conference and should be considered for an at-large even if they don’t win the tournament, but they appeared to dominate last year as well and went out in the quarters, so we shall see.

-The SoCon also tips this afternoon. Davidson ran away with this league and obviously isn’t playing today.  I just don’t see anyone that can match up agaisnt Davidson.  In order for an upset to occur, the Wildcats would have to have a very off night while another team had the game of their lives.

OTHER ACTION OF NOTE

If anyone was seriously considering Kentucky to be a tournament team before last night, they really shouldn’t have been.  That fact should be even more obvious now.  Their lost to Georgia was crippling, but I think they were crippled to begin with.

-Virginia did themselves no favors with their loss to Florida State.  I had them on the bubble, but somewhat safely inside.  After last night, not so much.  They appear to be playing their way out.  What’s crazy is that they have a decent record against the top 100 with a smattering of very good wins, but an atrocious record against sub 100 teams.

WRITERS NOTE:  In the initial summary, I had stated that High Point had beaten Liberty.  Obviously, that was a mistake.  It has been corrected.

Small Conference Game of the Day – March 8

As we head towards the end of the 2011-12 Small Conference Games of the Day, we turn our focus tonight back to the Ivy League.  Harvard appeared to be on the verge of locking up the Ivy championship and automatic bid last week, until they fell at Princeton Friday night and followed that up with a loss at Penn on Saturday.  As a result, the Crimson are now a game behind Princeton in the loss column.  This weekend Harvard hosts Columbia and Cornell to conclude their regular season, while Princeton travels to Yale and Brown.  The Tigers also have a game left Tuesday evening at Penn.  If Princeton wins their final three games they will take the NCAA tournament bid.  However, should they lose at least one, the door opens again for Harvard, and we have the possibility of a one game playoff next weekend to determine the automatic bid winner.

Tonight’s SCGD is Princeton’s first of its three road games to end the season, a 7:00 PM Eastern game in New Haven, Connecticut against the Yale Bulldogs.  These same two teams met back on February 9 at Princeton, and Yale pulled off the upset 69-65.  Therefore, this is hardly a guaranteed win for Princeton.  In fact, this may arguably be their most difficult of their three remaining games.  Yale is led offensively by Matt Townsend who is averaging 14.7 points per game and Austin Morgan who is third in the nation in free throw percentage at 90.8%.  Princeton is led by Ian Hummer who became the Tiger’s second all-time leading scorer last time out with 1577 career points.

CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK NOTEBOOK

284 TEAMS REMAIN!!!!

For all the action, check out Chad’s viewing guide located here….

https://hoopshd.com/2013/03/06/conference-tournament-viewing-guide-march-7-2013/

-It was mostly chalk in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris and Wagner not only won, but won easily. LIU Brooklyn had to sweat out Quinnipiac, but was able to pull away at the end. Bryant, who I talked about yesterday, was the only home team that lost. This sets up an intriguing semifinal. Mount Saint Mary’s is the lowest seeded remaining team, but they have also won eight in a row and are one of the hottest teams in the league. They’ll play at Robert Morris on Saturday.

-In the Atlantic Sun, or as fans like to call it, the Atlantic Fun, Gulf Coast struggled in the first half against North Florida, but pulled away in the second half. Mercer, the first place team and host, had no problems at all with Lipscomb. They now get a day off before having to face the winner of SC Upstate vs Jacksonville.

-It was chalk in the Patriot League as well with the home teams winning all four games. Army’s win over American assures them of their first winning season since 1985. They will face Bucknell in the semis. Lehigh will face rival Lafayette in the other semifinal game, which should be a fun one.

-Morehead State and SEMO advanced to the quarters of the Ohio Valley without too much trouble.

-LMU won just their second conference game of the year in their WCC opening round game against Portland.

-The Big South resumes today with its four quarterfinal games. Charleston Southern, who won the South, will face Wintrhop, who they actually split the season series with. VMI, who loves to push the tempo, will take on Longwood. Gardner Webb, who is another favorite, will face Campbell in what is probably the most compelling game of the day. And, lastly, High Point will take on Liberty. If the seeds hold serve, High Point, Charleston Southern, VMI and Gardner Webb should be an evenly matched and competitive semifinal.

-The Ohio Valley resumes today with its two quarterfinal games. Tennessee State will take on Morehead State. The winner will face Belmont, who didn’t lose many games, but who did lose to Tennessee State. If those two were to meet in Nashville it would be a potential showcase. Eastern Kentucky will face SEMO in the other game for the right to take on Murray State.

Belmont has a shot at an at-large, but they’d really be sweating if they failed to win this tournament because any game they lose will be an additional bad loss on their profile. EKU and Murray aren’t as bad as losing to anyone else, so the semifinal will be big for them. A semifinal of Belmont vs Tennessee State and EKU vs Murray is intriguing as well. It really is starting to feel like March.

-Bradley and Drake face off for the right to meet Creighton and Missouri State and Southern Illinois face off for the right to meet Wichita in the Missouri Valley opening round tonight. Drake is in 8th place, but they did look pretty good at times throughout the season. Since Creighton doesn’t need to win the tournament to get in, an upset in the quarterfinals tomorrow isn’t entirely out of the question.

-The second round of the WCC is tonight as San Francisco faces LMU and San Diego takes on Pepperdine.

OTHER ACTION FROM TONIGHT

-LOUISIANA TECH AT NEW MEXICO STATE (WAC). LA Tech is interesting. They have a bloated record, but no real wins of note. Their next two games are arguably the toughest of the season, and I’m thinking that if they win both of them the committee will take them if they fail to win the WAC Tournament. Anything short of that and they’ll need the automatic bid, though. New Mexico State has just one home loss, so although they’re not a tournament team, LA Tech will get more credit for a win there than perhaps anything else on their profile to date. HUGELY important game for them tonight.

-KENTUCKY AT GEORGIA (SEC). I think Kentucky is farther away from the field than most. If they are even going to get looked at they can’t afford a loss in a game like this.

-VIRGINIA AT FLORIDA STATE (ACC). Virginia is on the bubble and every game for them has a pivotal feel. I think a loss would be more damaging than a win would be helpful, but no matter how you look at it they cannot afford to lose tonight.

-BUTLER AT UMASS (Atlantic Ten). I still like Butler’s profile and think their team is built to possibly go deep, but someone pointed out to me that they really haven’t beaten tournament team, or for that matter looked all that good against one, since beating Temple back in January…..and Temple is a bubble team.  UMass is outside the bubble, but a strong finish and showing in the A10 Tournament will get them a look.

-WISCONSIN AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten). Both teams are safely in. Both teams are likely protected seeds, and Michigan State is a potential #1 seed if they win out all the way through the Big Ten Tournament.

-OREGON AT COLORADO (Pac Twelve). I think both teams are in. At this point it would be hard for either of them to play their way out. A win tonight would be solid for either team.

Small Conference Game of the Day – March 7

Conference tournament action continues tonight, but the SCGD will be turning instead to the one conference whose regular season comes to a conclusion.  Entering the day today, four teams remain undefeated in their conferences.  Gonzaga’s regular season is over.  Memphis has one regular season game left on Saturday.  Louisiana Tech is 2 games away from a perfect conference season (though they are a pair of tough road tests tonight at New Mexico State and this weekend at Denver).

The fourth team that is undefeated in its league in Norfolk State.  The Spartans were one of the darlings on last year’s NCAA tournament when they joined with Lehigh to pull two 15 seed upsets over 2 seeds on the same day, eliminating the Missouri Tigers.  This season, they have dominated the MEAC, sitting at a perfect 15-0 in conference and 20-10 overall.  Tonight, in the SCGD, they host North Carolina A&T (15-15, 8-7) at 8:00 PM Eastern in their final game before the MEAC tournament next week.

Despite Norfolk State’s perfection in the MEAC so far this year, a quirk in the schedule of this 13 team conference resulted in the Spartans not having a regular season matchup against North Carolina Central.  The two teams do have a great chance to meet in the MEAC title game though, as NCCU has only lost once in MEAC play, sitting at 21-8 overall and 14-1 in league.  The Eagles also wrap up their regular season tonight at 8:00 PM Eastern when they travel to Hampton.  Hampton has already locked up the #3 seed in the conference tournament and will join Norfolk State and NCCU as the only teams getting byes into the quarterfinal round.  However, the story of the night in the MEAC will be Norfolk State’s pursuit of conference regular season perfection.
