Under the Radar Game of the Day – Saturday, March 5

Southern Utah at Portland State, 3:00 PM Eastern, pluto.tv

Today is the finale Under the Radar Game of the Day for the 2020-21 season, and what a crazy ride it has been.  Games have been postponed, cancelled, and even scheduled on just a few hours notice.  However, with only conference tournament and postseason play left for the Under the Radar schools, we are calling it a wrap on this season and will not be returning until November for the start of the 2021-22 season.

Our finale today takes us to Portland, Oregon as the Southern Utah Thunderbirds will be looking to lock up the school’s first ever Big Sky regular season title (and possibly their last with the T’birds on their way to the WAC after next season).  Southern Utah enters the game at   18-3 overall and 11-2 in conference.  SUU has won 8 games in a row.  Tevian Jones leads the team in scoring with 17.3 points per game, followed by Maizen Fausett’s 13.8 points a 7 rebounds per game.  Portland State is 9-11 overall and 6-7 in Big Sky play.  The Vikings are led by James Scott’s 13.5 points per game.  The two teams played just two nights ago, with SUU winning 68-58 thanks to 26 points from John Knight III and 20 from Jones.  Scott led the Vikings with 20 points and 8 boards.

This season has certainly been an adventure, and closing with Southern Utah may be appropriate because the Thunderbirds re a team that has also come a very long way.  It was just seven years ago that they won the HoopsHD Centenary Award as the worst team in D1.  Those days are clearly long gone now!
