Under the Radar Game of the Day – Monday, January 15th

Alabama A&M (3-14, 2-2) at Alabama State (8-9, 3-1) – 7:30 PM EST

Today’s UTR Game of the Day heads down to Mobile, Alabama for the fourth game of the day in the Bridge Builder’s Classic that is being played on the campus of South Alabama. This will be a matchup between the Alabama A&M Bulldogs and the Alabama State Hornets. A&M started off conference play with back-to-back road wins against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State. Dallin Smith leads the Bulldogs with 14.7 points per game.

Like their opponent, the Hornets opened their season by sweeping the UAPB/MVSU roadtrip. However, while A&M got swept at home by Jackson State and Alcorn State, Alabama State did salvage a win at home against Jackson State to move up to 3-1 in conference play. Antonio Madlock had 14 points to lead the Hornets to their aforementioned 55-53 victory against Jackson State.

Hoops HD Daily Rundown: Sunday, Jan 14th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Remember how crazy everyone thought it was when we saw four top 5 teams lose on the road to unranked opponents in a span of two nights?? Well, yesterday we saw three more top 10 teams do the same thing.

-Houston went into TCU and it was a battle for all 40 minutes that saw a couple of lead changes in the final minute of play. TCU went ahead with less than ten seconds to go, and then Houston turned it over before they could even get up a shot. The Horned Frogs held on for a 68-67 win, and it was the second straight loss for the Cougars.

-Kentucky at Texas A&M was another thriller that came down to the wire and actually went into overtime after two Kentucky freethrows tied the game right at the end of regulation. Kentucky then couldn’t score for until the final minute of overtime, and TAMU picked up a big and much needed win 97-92.

-Arizona losing at Washington State was the biggest surprise of the three. Like the other two games, it was a battle throughout with Arizona having a chance to tie on their last possession, but Wazzu held on for the 73-70 upset win.

-Kansas got a battle at home from Oklahoma in a matchup of of top ten teams, but got control down the stretch for a 78-66 Jayhawks win. It was a nice way to bounce back after losing to UCF earlier in the week.

-Duke had to sweat out Georgia Tech, and actually trailed for part of the second half, but pulled it out 84-79 to (checks notes) avoid the regular season sweep from the Yellow Jackets.

-Cincinnati’s last three games have been a road upset of BYU, a home loss at Texas that came down to the final possession, and last night they lost on the road at Baylor in another game that came down to the final possession. Cincinnati had two good chances to get what would have been a go-ahead basket, but couldn’t get either one to fall and Baylor barely avoided the upset at home 62-59. Still, the Bearcats are playing very well right now and can get the wins they need to finish inside the bubble if they keep it up. Speaking of BYU…

-BYU picked up a really nice road win at UCF 63-58. UCF is outside the bubble, but they’ve been playing well lately and were coming off of a home win against Kansas.

-I had been beating up on New Mexico for most of the season and saying that they were frauds, so I wasn’t at all surprised when San Diego State jumped out to an early lead. I was flabbergasted when New Mexico came back, then got a lead, then got a big lead, and then blew out the Aztecs 88-70. It was a VERY impressive showing by the Lobos!

-Texas, who I had also been calling a fraud, made me reconsider my position after their win at Cincinnati earlier in the week. They followed that up with a 76-73 road loss to West Virginia. I am now back to being a complete non-believer in the Longhorns.

-Utah State had to come from behind on the road at UNLV, but barely held on to avoid the road upset 87-86 in yet another thrilling game from yesterday that came down to the final possession.

-Creighton got a battle and then some from a Saint John’s team that has been playing exceptionally well lately, but held on to win 66-65. Yet another thrilling game from yesterday that came down to the final possession.

-Seton Hall keeps stringing together good wins! The got another good one on the road yesterday by knocking off a Butler team that had also been playing well and who we had squarely on our bubble 78-72.

-James Madison, who so was in the rankings just last week, fell at home to Appalachian State 59-55 for their second Sun Belt loss. We knew that Appalachian State was good and figured they might beat JMU, but we were expecting it to happen later in the year when App State was at home. This is a Hot Hot Hot win for App State! And it puts them in the driver’s seat in the SBC!

-Providence has battled as much adversity as any team in the country this year, and it may finally be catching up to them. Xavier blew them off their own floor yesterday 85-65. Xavier, despite being just 8-8, is getting better and I think is good enough to reach the bubble. I don’t just say that to make Stalica happy! In fact, I like to make everyone else at Hoops HD as UN-happy as possible! Keep in mind that three of those losses were to Purdue, Houston, and UConn. The Musketeers can play!

-South Carolina really needed a road win, and they got one at Missouri yesterday. Barely. They needed overtime, but held on to win 71-69 for just their second true road win of the season.

-Kansas State at Texas Tech was a game that felt extremely Bubblicious, and the Red Raiders held on to win 60-59 at home. Yet another big game that came down to the final seconds.

-Miami FL had been in a major tailspin over the past week or so, but got a much needed road win at Virginia Tech 75-71, which was their first true road win of the season. That will certainly help stop some of the bleeding.

-After upsetting Gonzaga a few nights ago, Santa Clara must have still been hung over against Saint Mary’s last night. I believe it was 34-6 at one point, and it never really got any close than that with SMC winning big on the road 73-49.

-Alabama has now won five straight after a very impressive 82-74 road win at Mississippi State. The Tide are really playing well and their resume keeps getting better and better.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

GEORGETOWN AT CONNECTICUT (Big East) – It’s technically a conference game, but it’s practically a buy game. UConn is on pace to earn a #1 seed and should roll in this one.

-UAB AT FLORIDA ATLANTIC (American) – FAU needs to hold serve in this game, and for the rest of the year, which is something they’ve had a difficult time doing up to this point.

RUTGERS AT MICHIGAN STATE (Big Ten) – The Spartans are hovering around the bubble and can’t really afford home losses to teams that are pretty far outside of it.

-MEMPHIS AT WICHITA STATE (American) – Memphis is a good team that’s had some close calls, but who has been able to avoid any major landmines so far. Having said that, they should win this one, but they better not overlook Wichita State.

-MARYLAND AT ILLINOIS (Big Ten) – Illinois is still dealing with the absence of their best player, which is no small thing to be dealing with, but they should still be able to beat the Terps at home

-UTAH AT STANFORD (Pac 12) – This should be a winnable road game for the Utes, which would be just their second true road win of the season, so it does help their resume out some.

-WASHINGTON AT UCLA (Pac 12) – Washington is outside the bubble, but can get on the right side of it if they can start stringing together wins. UCLA has lost 8 of their last 9, so it’s a winnable game for the Huskies.

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Sunday, January 14th

Liberty (11-6, 0-2) at Louisiana Tech (11-6, 1-1) – 3:00 PM ET (ESPN2)

Today’s UTR Matinee of the Day goes to Ruston, Louisiana for a Conference USA matchup between the Liberty Flames and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Liberty started the year strong by winning the championship in the Myrtle Beach Invitational, but the Flames have started the 2024 calendar year in a slump. They opened conference play with a tough loss at Western Kentucky and then followed up the effort with a double-digit loss at home against Jacksonville State.

Louisiana Tech also went through a stretch where they lost 4 out of 5 games; their only win came against non-D1 Dallas Christian. The Bulldogs opened C-USA with a pair of road games; they lost their opener at Sam Houston but were able to rebound with a 60-52 victory at Middle Tennessee State. Daniel Batcho had 16 points for Tech in their victory at MTSU.

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Saturday, Jan 13th

NEWS AND NOTES:

We’ve got some brutal winter weather hitting a lot of the country right now, and it could end up impacting some of the games over the weekend. Portland State’s game against Weber State will go ahead as scheduled, but no fans will be in attendance due to hazardous winter weather in the area.

For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-The big result from last night was Boise State’s 64-56 win at Nevada. We liked Boise State coming into the year, and while they were a little slow to get going they’ve now won 8 of their last 9 and have beaten Colorado State and Nevada in their last two games. On the floor they’re looking as good as anyone in the Mountain West right now.

-Nebraska followed up their big win over Purdue with a blowout road loss at Iowa.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-TENNESSEE AT GEORGIA (SEC). Tennessee looks like a solid protected seed who could make a case that they deserve a #1 seed. Georgia is a team that has shown some signs of life, but who still needs to build up their profile. A win today, even though it’s at home, would go a long way.

-SYRACUSE AT NORTH CAROLINA (ACC). Syracuse is trying to play their way inside the bubble, and North Carolina is trying to play their way onto the #1 line. It’s probably too tall of an order for the Orange, but if they were to win this they’d certainly get everyone’s attention.

-NORTHWESTERN AT WISCONSIN (Big Ten). This is a good Northwestern team going on the road to face a great Wisconsin team. Northwestern appears to be inside the bubble and could really climb the seedlist if they somehow manage to knock off a Wisconsin team that’s looking more and more like a solid protected seed.

-SETON HALL AT BUTLER (Big East). Butler is coming off their biggest win of the year with their road win at Marquette, and is now right on our bubble. If they can keep stringing together wins their resume will keep getting stronger. Seton Hall has been on a hell of a streak and has yet another big test today.

-SAINT JOHN’S AT CREIGHTON (Big East). The Johnnies have now won four in a row and beaten some quality opponents in that stretch. This is probably their biggest test out of that stretch of four, though. They’re on the road against a Creighton team that’s in the rankings and that is very hard to beat at home. It’s a big resume building opportunity for Saint John’s.

-OKLAHOMA AT KANSAS (Big 12). As much as I like Oklahoma, I don’t think of them as being a solid protected seed. Having said that, my mind will completely change if they’re able to win this. Kansas is coming off a tough road loss and looking to bounce back, so they’re definitely not going to overlook the Sooners.

-KENTUCKY AT TEXAS A&M (SEC). Kentucky has won six straight and has looked really strong throughout that stretch. They’ll be tested again on the road today against a pretty good TAMU team that will be amped way up for this one. Despite being just 9-6 and having lost their last two games, TAMU’s resume still looks pretty good, but this would be a massive win for them in terms of making it look even better and shifting the momentum of their season back their way.

-SAN DIEGO STATE AT NEW MEXICO (Mountain West). As hard as it is for teams to win at The Pit, I think San Diego State is clearly the better team and can get another big road win on their resume today. New Mexico has a bloated record, but they don’t have much at all in the way of good wins, so they should have an sense of urgency coming into this one despite being 13-3.

-VIRGINIA AT WAKE FOREST (ACC). Both teams are on the outside looking in, both have work to do, and both could really use this one today.

-XAVIER AT PROVIDENCE (Big East). Providence, despite all the things that seem to be going against them, is still playing solid basketball and nearly pulled off a huge win against Saint John’s in their last game despite all their setbacks. Having said that, they have lost three straight and Xavier, despite being just 7-8 on the year, has been getting better as the season has gone along.

-UTAH STATE AT UNLV (Mountain West). Utah State is 15-1 and ranked 20th in the nation, but this will be a tough road game against a UNLV team that seems to be getting better. They’re 4-1 in their last five games with the only loss being on the road to San Diego State, and beat New Mexico at home rather handily earlier in the week.

-SOUTH CAROLINA AT MISSOURI (SEC). I like this South Carolina team, but I learned on our Bracket Rundown Show earlier in the week that I don’t like them quite as much as everyone else. That being said, this should be a winnable road game for them (which would be just their second of the year) against a Missouri team that’s been kind of disappointing this year.

-BYU AT UCF (Big 12). BYU has lost their first two Big 12 games, and will be challenged again today against a UCF team that’s coming off a big home win against Kansas, and has been playing better, and should be jacked way up again for this one. I don’t want to overreact and call this a must-win for the Cougars, but an 0-3 start to Big 12 play would put them in a bit of a tailspin.

-KANSAS STATE AT TEXAS TECH (Big 12). These are two good teams with two good records, but with so-so resumes. They need quality wins, and this is a big resume building opportunity for both of them.

-APPALACHIAN STATE AT JAMES MADISON (Sun Belt). These are the two best teams in the SBC, and it’s a chance for App State to REALLY make a case that they belong inside the bubble along with JMU. Appalachian State does have a really nice home win against Auburn, but this would probably be even bigger. James Madison had some of their toughest conference games early in the schedule, and has another challenging one today.

-HOUSTON AT TCU (Big 12). After playing almost no good teams out of conference, TCU has been playing quite well against the good teams they’ve played against in conference. Today, they’re at home agianst one of the best teams in the country, and a win would really give their resume something it really needs. As good as Houston is, one could argue that this would actually be one of their better wins of the season so far if they’re able to pull it off. They’re also trying to bounce back from a road loss at Iowa State.

-MIAMI FL AT VIRGINIA TECH (ACC). Both of these teams have work to do. Miami is coming off a very damaging loss at home to Louisville, and while VA Tech has shown occasional signs of being good, they haven’t done it consistently enough to land themselves inside the bubble yet.

-SAINT MARY’S AT SANTA CLARA (West Coast). I think there may be room for one of these teams inside the bubble so long as they can blow through the WCC. Santa Clara is coming off a big home win against Gonzaga, and both teams are undefeated in league play, so the winner of this game will be in the driver’s seat in regards to the conference standings.

-CINCINNATI AT BAYLOR (Big 12). Cincinnati is a team that is just inside our bubble and who could really shoot up the seedlist with a win today. Baylor looks to be a solid protected seed and will stay there so long as they keep holding serve.

-DRAKE AT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (Missouri Valley). These are two of the better teams in the MVC, and Drake has an outside shot of landing inside the bubble, but they pretty much need to win out in order to do it.

-ALABAMA AT MISSISSIPPI STATE (SEC). Both teams are likely tournament teams, and both are probably going to end up with resumes that look better than what they currently look like. Having said that, this is a big game for both teams because it’s a resume building opportunity for a couple of teams who still need to do some building.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

-Vanderbilt @ Ole Miss (SEC) – Ole Miss should be able to hold serve in this one and get to a very impressive 15-1 on the year
-Davidson @ George Washington (Atlantic 10) – a win for GW gets them to 13-3
-Western Carolina @ Mercer (SoCon) – WCU keeps winning, and can get to 15-2 on the year with a win today
-Penn State @ Purdue (Big Ten) – this should be a rather routine bounce-back game for the Boilermakers after losing to Nebraska earlier in the week
-Boston College @ Clemson (ACC) – Clemson has lost three straight and really doesn’t need to make it four straight by losing at home to BC
-SMU @ East Carolina (American) – SMU needs to put together a long string of wins in order to reach the bubble
-Arkansas @ Florida (SEC) – both teams have potential, but both need to do much better than what they’ve done so far
-Loyola Chicago @ Saint Joseph’s (Atlantic 10) – Saint Joe’s has a path to the bubble, but it is getting more and more narrow. They basically need to win out
-Georgia Tech @ Duke (ACC) – GA Tech won the first meeting between these two, but Duke hasn’t lost since and to win at Duke would be a HUGE surprise
-Arizona @ Washington State (Pac 12) – this isn’t the easiest game in the world for Arizona to win, but it’s the kind of road game they can win and should win
-Oklahoma State @ Iowa State (Big 12) – Iowa State has their heads in the clouds after their big win against Houston, and now they’ve got to get their feet back on the ground and hold serve in this one
-George Mason @ Richmond (Atlantic 10) – Mason has a very small margin for error and they’re coming off a loss, but they should at least get looked at if they can blow through the A10
-VMI @ Samford (SoCon) – BUCKY BALL!!!!!! A win for Samford gets them to an incredible 15-2 on the year and keeps them unbeaten in the SoCon
-Weber State @ Portland State (Big Sky) – both teams made some noise early on and Weber is starting to play really well now
-California @ Oregon (Pac 12) – this should be a virtual home buy game for the Ducks
-Tarlton State @ Grand Canyon (WAC) – the Lopes are inside our bubble and will almost assuredly stay there so long as they keep winning
-USC @ Colorado (Pac 12) – Colorado has lost three straight and hasn’t lookd all that good in any of those games, and can’t afford another loss to a non-tournament caliber team
-Portland @ San Francisco (West Coast) – a win for the Dons gets them to 14-4 on the year and keeps them unbeaten in the WCC

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Saturday, January 13th

Northern Colorado (9-6, 2-0) at Montana State (7-9, 2-1) – 8:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Only the bravest of the brave camped out in Bozeman for tonight’s matchup between the Northern Colorado Bears and the Montana State Bobcats. As of the time this article went up on the webpage, it was -38F in Bozeman. At least fans here are being allowed into the building; Portland State is restricting their arena to players, coaches and officials only due to their winter weather.

As for the teams themselves, Montana State has so far beaten Idaho State and Northern Arizona; their only loss is to league favorite Weber State on the road. Northern Colorado has thus far beaten Montana and Northern Arizona in league play. For tip-off, temperatures are expected to climb all the way up to -6F tonight.
