Under the Radar Game of the Day – Friday, January 12th (And other News, and Notes)

Wright State (9-8, 4-2) at Youngstown State (12-5, 4-2) – 9:00 PM ET (ESPN2)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes place in Youngstown as the hometown Penguins host the Wright State Raiders in a Horizon League matchup. Both teams are currently a half-game behind Oakland and Green Bay in the standings. The Penguins had a brief 2-game losing streak against Oakland and Northern Kentucky, but they have since rebounded with back-to-back wins against IUPUI and Purdue-Fort Wayne at home. Brett Thompson had 24 points for the Penguins in their 93-85 win against PFW.

Wright State also had a 2-game losing streak a couple weeks ago, but their losses came on the Wisconsin road trip with losses at Milwaukee and Green Bay. They are in the midst of a stretch where they are playing 5 of 6 league games on the road, and are coming off of back-to-back wins against PFW and Robert Morris. Tanner Holden had 29 points in the Raiders’ 101-76 victory at Robert Morris.

OTHER NEWS AND NOTES FROM THE PUPPET:

-Gonzaga needed to blow through the West Coast Conference to stay in the rankings and stay on the right side of the bubble. Last night, they fell in a thriller at Santa Clara 77-76. I still think the Zags will win a lot of games this year, but one of them will probably need to be that last WCC Tournament game.

-Florida Atlantic BARELY escaped Tulane 85-84 in a game that saw a couple of lead changes in the final minute of play. A great effort by the Green Wave, and a big bullet-dodge for FAU

-UCLA lost 90-44 at Utah. I did not look to see if Mick Cronin, in an attempt to be courteous to the media and not keep them waiting, opted again to send an assistant coach to the press conference instead of show up himself again.

-MINNESOTA AT INDIANA (Big Ten). This is a winnable road game for the Gophers, who we still have outside the bubble, but who can absolutely still reach it.

-DAYTON AT DUQUESNE (Atlantic 10). This could be a bit of a tough road test for the Flyers, but they are clearly the best team in the A10 and will be wearing white in the Round of 64 if they can continue to hold serve.

-DEPAUL AT VILLANOVA (Big East). It’s a conference game, but for all intents and purposes it is a home buy game.

-NEBRASKA AT IOWA (Big Ten). The Huskers are now inside our bubble, and Iowa is a team that has not performed up to their abilities yet, but still has the potential to be good and could make quite a bit of noise between now and the end.

-BOISE STATE AT NEVADA (Mountain West). Some of us were saying that if there is a 5th team from the MWC that can land inside the bubble, it’s Boise State. Well, here is a chance (albeit a tough one) to pick up a HUUUGE win!

Hoops HD Bracket Rundown (Jan 11th)

NOTE:  This broadcast was recorded at 10pm, est on Thursday, January 11th.  No games that went final after that, particularly Illinois vs Michigan State, were considered when creating this bracket.

Chad and the panel build a seedlist line by line and debate, discuss, and assess each team as they go.  Find out who they have on the #1 lines so far, who is safely in, who still has work to do, and who on the bubble just made it in and just missed it.

Below is a final copy of the bracket, but don’t look at it until you’ve watched the show!!

NOTE: For those that watched the show, BYU had to be swapped down a seed line for bracketing (and San Diego State moved up) because all spots on the 5 line had games played on Sundays in either the First/Second Round or Regional sites. BYU does not play on Sundays and the Selection Committee honors this request, even if it means the bracket has to be adjusted.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

-On Tuesday we saw the top two teams lose to unranked opponents. Last night we saw two more top five opponents lose to unranked opponents.

-Kansas had played with their food in several games. They had to sweat out Indiana, sweat out TCU, and even against a team like Eastern Illinois they didn’t bury them. Well, last night the food totally fell into their laps as they blew an 8pt halftime lead and were anemic on offense in the second half. UCF picked up a really big 65-60 win and suddenly they are worth paying attention to. UCF’s defense was amazing in the second half and disrupted everything Kansas wanted to do.

-5th ranked Tennessee had a sloppy first half at Mississippi State and then just couldn’t catch all the way back up in the second half. They fell 77-72. Mississippi State is a team we know is good, but they had fallen out of the rankings. I believe they will be back in them next week after this win.

-UConn was the one top 5 team that did win their road game, but it was close and Xavier actually had a lead well into the second half. The Huskies held on 80-75.

-North Carolina got another nice road win as they knocked off NC State 67-54. UNC’s resume just keeps looking better and better. This win may not jump out at you on the surface, but NC State is a potential tournament team and they were unbeaten at home prior to this.

-TCU, who nearly won at Kansas over the weekend, held off 9th ranked Oklahoma 80-71. Two things to take away from this is that while Oklahoma is good, they’re not top-ten-good, and while TCU did nothing out of conference, they’re capable of playing well against, and beating, good teams.

-The biggest win of the night may belong to Butler. They went into Marquette and got a massive 69-62 road win, which catapults them onto the committee’s radar. This ended a three game losing streak for Butler, and we had been saying all along that while Butler’s resume wasn’t a tournament caliber resume we thought they were good enough to pick up those wins before the end of the year. Well, last night they proved it. They host Seton Hall this Saturday, which is another team that is red hot right now.

-Wisconsin picked up another nice win on the road as they knocked off a pretty good Ohio State team 71-60. Wisconsin has a history of being really good, but for some reason always being a little overlooked. Well, this year they are really good, but still aren’t being talked about all that much. Other than Purdue they may be the best team in the Big Ten. After all, they’ve actually won all their conference road games.

-Clemson, who was looking like a protected seed just a few weeks ago, has now lost three in a row. They were actually beaten rather handily by Virginia Tech last night 87-72, and you have to wonder when they are going to come out of that tailspin.

-Northwestern had to battle, but they did get a nice 76-72 road win at Penn State, which adds another road win to an already impressive resume. They’re ahead of Purdue in the standings and have beaten them head to head.

-Providence is dealing with injuries, but they just keep battling. They fell behind against Saint John’s, but despite being shorthanded, and despite being on the road, they came back and nearly won the game. They fell 75-73, and Saint John’s continues to string together notable wins, but NEVER count out Providence!!!

-Miami FL, who is a team that I was praising about a week ago and arguing that they were underrated, is no longer a team that I believe to be underrated or under-appreciated. They lost at home to Louisville last night 80-71. Anyways, moving on…

-Saint Joseph’s was a team I was big on, and that I even had in my personal bracket that I did earlier this week. Last night they lost on the road to a Saint Louis team that is about a hundred miles from the NIT bubble. I am no longer big on Saint Joe’s. Anyways, moving on…

-Indiana State needed last night’s win against Drake because it was one of their few remaining chances to pump up their tournament resume. With about ten minutes to go Drake took complete control and ended up with an 89-78 win. I still think Indiana State is potentially dangerous, and Drake could be a tough out in the Round of 64 as well, but minus one of them winning out they’ll probably both need the auto-bid to get there.

-Georgia is now 12-3 on the year after their 76-66 win over an Arkansas team that we all actually thought would be good this year, but to date we have all been completely wrong about. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, are a team to start paying attention to.

-Ole Miss beat a pretty good Florida team rather handily last night 103-85. The Rebels were at home, but still. It was one of their toughest games of the year given how weak their OOC schedule was, and they won it going away.

-Colorado stepped on a landmine last night as they lost at California 82-78. Simply put, this is both a surprising loss and a bad loss that will damage their tournament resume.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-FLORIDA ATLANTIC AT TULANE (American). FAU’s season has been totally scattershot. Their resume tops out with a win at Arizona, and it bottoms out with a home loss to Bryant, and they’ve done everything else in between. This is a road game they should win. They’ve shown they can win a game like this. But, it’s also not easy as Tulane is improving as a program and has been strong at home this year.

-UNC GREENSBORO AT SAMFORD (SoCon). These are probably the two best teams in the SoCon, and the winner will sprint out to an early lead. Landing on the bubble for either team is a long shot, but if one of them can blow through the league, then….maybe?

-MICHIGAN STATE AT ILLINOIS (Big Ten). Michigan State is dealing with some issues after a decisive loss to Northwestern in their last game. Still, I think they have good pieces and I keep waiting for them to snap out of it. Illinois is dealing with some issues of their own and are without a key player. They’re ranked in the top ten because of what they’ve done up to this point, but are they the same team?

-UCLA AT UTAH (Pac 12). UCLA has been an absolute mess and it could get even messier tonight. Winning at Utah is no easy task and the Bruins’ tailspin may continue.

-GONZAGA AT SANTA CLARA (West Coast). A lot of people are down on the Zags right now, and understandably so, but I think the committee will still select them so long as they blow through the WCC, which they should be able to do.

-ARIZONA STATE AT WASHINGTON (Pac 12). This is a very big week for Washington. I still think they can get within reach of the bubble before the season is over, but they have to start stringing together wins.

-Abilene Christian @ Grand Canyon (WAC) – The Lopes should roll

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Thursday, January 11th

UNC-Greensboro (11-4, 2-0) at Samford (13-2, 2-0) – 8:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

With Furman faltering this year compared to recent years in the Southern Conference, tonight’s matchup of UNC-G and Samford gives us the likely top 2 teams in the conference (outside of a surging Western Carolina team). UNC-Greensboro has started off league play with home wins against Furman and East Tennessee State, but the Spartans will now play their first SoCon road game tonight. Mikeal Brown-Jones averages 18.6 points a game and 7.8 rebounds per game for the Spartans.

Samford opened the season with a blowout loss at then-#1 Purdue and a 10-point loss at VCU, but the Bulldogs have since won 13 games in a row. I believe that may also be the longest active winning streak in the country with Top 25 teams finally dropping games like flies over the past week. Belmont and Texas Southern stand out the most along their nonconference wins, and the Bulldogs have beaten Chattanooga at home and the Citadel on the road. Achor Achor had 19 points in Samford’s 80-64 win at Citadel last weekend.

Under the Radar (Jan 10th)

Chad and David are back for a vintage edition of Under the Radar! Like the old days, it’s just the two of them. Tonight’s feature conference is the Summit League, which has been really strong in recent years, but has been somewhat disappointing this year. We discuss their inaugural challenge with the Big Sky Conference, which has one of the most interesting tiebreakers we’ve ever seen with the conference commissioners arm-wrestling at the Final Four to determine the winner if all other tiebreakers fail to break the tie!

From there, we run through the other 21 UTR leagues and discuss how Weber State and Akron are starting to come on strong. We look at James Madison’s loss to Southern Miss and discuss how damaging that might be to their at-large chances. Indiana State went down to Drake tonight, which may jeopardize their chances of landing inside the bubble. Princeton and Grand Canyon are still looking incredibly strong and are starting to get votes in the top 25. Lafayette had a shocking upset win over Colgate, and we look at how the Patriot League may be shaping up. We discuss all that, and more! And, as we do every week, we close with this week’s UTR Top Ten.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Wednesday, Jan 10th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Last night we saw the top two ranked teams both lose to unranked opponents.

-Purdue fell at Nebraska 88-72 in a game where the Huskers opened up a lead near the end of the first half, and every time it looked like Purdue was shifting the momentum back their way the Huskers would answer with a big bucket. Even though it was a home win, it was still a huge win for Nebraska and will likely land them inside the bubble for now.

-Houston fell behind early and fast to Iowa State, and then came back to tie it early in the second half after being absolutely anemic on offense in the first half. It looked like they would pull it out once they pulled even, but it stayed close throughout the second half and Iowa State got a huge 57-53 win that will do wonders for their resume.

-Baylor came from behind in the second half to knock off BYU 81-72 and pick up a big win for themselves. Its’ the second straight loss for BYU, but all and all they’re still in good shape.

-Colorado State lost their second straight game as they fell on the road to Boise State 65-58. The Broncos pretty much sustained a lead all throughout the second half and picked up a really big win that could put them on the bubble.

-I had mentioned earlier in the week that I thought if a fifth team from the Mountain West would play their way onto the bubble, it would likely not be New Mexico. Last night they showed everyone why I thought that when they lost (albeit on the road) 83-73 to a UNLV team that no one thinks is within a hundred miles of the bubble.

-Texas had done nothing at all on the season to warrant their top 25 ranking going into their game at Cincinnati last night. Now, the Longhorns HAVE done something! They held off Cincinnati 74-73 in an exciting game that seesawed back and forth and that saw a couple of lead changes in the final minute of play. Texas really needed this win. I mean, their resume was absolutely flat prior to last night.

-On Monday I talked a little bit about how I was starting to like Wake Forest. Last night Wake lost 87-82 team to a Florida State team that none of us really like. I am no longer starting to like Wake Forest.

.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-PROVIDENCE AT SAINT JOHN’S (Big East). Both teams look good on paper, but with the recent injuries you get the sense that Providence is going to struggle the rest of the way whereas the Johnnies really seem to be hitting their stride. This has a bit of a pivotal feel for Providence. Can they play well in a tough road game given their recent setbacks?

-TENNESSEE AT MISSISSIPPI STATE (SEC). The Vols have looked great both on paper and on the court. This will be a tough road test against a solid-looking Mississippi State team that appears to be good enough to make it to the NCAA Tournament and who should be jacked up pretty big for this one.

-CLEMSON AT VIRGINIA TECH (ACC). Clemson has lost two straight, and while they should be good enough to win this one on the road, VA Tech is no pushover and can get within reach of the bubble themselves if they can string together some wins.

-NORTH CAROLINA AT NC STATE (ACC). I think North Carolina is good enough to end up as a #1 seed. I’m not predicting that they will, but I am saying they’re in the mix. That being said, they’ll be tested tonight in a rivalry game against an NC State team that’s pretty good themselves and looking for a chance to put themselves into the spotlight.

-INDIANA STATE AT DRAKE (Missouri Valley). These look to be the two best teams in the Missouri Valley, and Indiana State in particular looks to be a team that can land inside the bubble, but for that to happen they need to come close to winning out. This should be a fun one tonight.

-CONNECTICUT AT XAVIER (Big East). UConn is ranked in the top five, and it’s a ranking they’ve definitely earned. Xavier is starting to look better and better as the season continues, and a win tonight can change the entire complexion of their resume and give them a huge amount of momentum moving forward.

-WISCONSIN AT OHIO STATE (Big Ten). Wisconsin clearly looks to be the better of the two teams, but it’s not easy to go on the road and win, and Ohio State is still looking like a tournament caliber team. This is actually a nice resume-building opportunity for both of them.

-OKLAHOMA AT TCU (Big 12). TCU has had an unspectacular year, but they nearly won at Kansas in their last game, which indicates they’re good enough to get the wins they need between now and the end of the year to land inside the bubble. Oklahoma is currently ranked in the top ten, and while I believe the Sooners are a good team, they’ve done absolutely nothing to warrant a ranking that high. I may change my opinion if they’re able to get this one on the road, though.

-BOSTON COLLEGE AT SYRACUSE (ACC). Both teams are outside the bubble, but both are also perhaps within reach of it. That makes this a big game for both these teams.

-ARKANSAS AT GEORGIA (SEC). Arkansas has been somewhat disappointing this year given all their talent. Having said that, they are a talented team, and are capable of turning things around. Georgia has been better than expected. They’ve won eight straight and while none of those wins were against opponents that were super-strong, they’ve still played well during that stretch and are good enough to get this win at home tonight.

-FLORIDA AT OLE MISS (SEC). I like this Florida team, but they need some more meat on their resume if they want to land in the top half of the bracket. Ole Miss suffered their first loss against Tennessee over the weekend, but it was also their only real test so far. They’ll be tested again tonight despite being at home, and it will be interesting to see what they do in this one.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

-Northwestern @ Penn State (Big Ten) – Northwestern has a solid looking profile, but to date they only have one true road win so they could really use this one
-Purdue Fort Wayne @ Youngstown State (Horizon League) – perhaps the two best teams in the HL
-Kansas @ UCF (Big 12) – this should be a winnable road game for the Jayhawks, but even when highly ranked it can be tough to win on the road
-Louisville @ Miami FL (ACC) – this should be an easy bounce back game for the Canes
-Western Carolina @ East Tennessee State (SoCon) – a win for WCU gets them to 14-2 on the year
-Western Kentucky @ Sam Houston (Conference USA) – WKU would probably need to win out to reach the bubble, but a win gets them to 13-3
-UTSA @ Memphis (American) – this is a virtual buy game for Memphis
-Colorado @ California (Pac 12) – this should be an easy road win for the Buffs
