News, Notes, and Highlighted Games – Friday, Dec 2nd

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s HOT HOT HOT UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Creighton is normally a pretty good outside shooting team, but they were somewhere around 5% from deep last night in their game at Texas.  But somehow, they were still in the game, and in the last couple of minutes had a chance to win it.  Texas ended up winning 72-67, and it’s a huge win for 2nd ranked Texas against a top ten team, but as for Creighton, had they shot the ball at a percentage that was even below average, but not so far below average that it actually defied the Law of Averages, they probably win the game.  I’m actually MORE impressed with Creighton being on the road and able to stay in the game despite such a poor night shooting than anything else.

-Arizona suffered their first loss of the season as they fell to Utah 81-66, and the game was basically seemingly played with Utah having a double digit lead the entire way.  Arizona was fantastic out in Maui, and absolutely earned their #4 ranking, but this was their first true road game of the season and it was a loss.

(as an aside, Sam Houston State DID win at Utah, and has just one loss on the year.  Can the voters, who I am sure take all their cues from a puppet, start showing this team some attention?).

-Arizona State looked awful in the first half at Colorado, trailed 38-23 at the half, and the game showed all the earmarks of being a blowout.  Arizona State was much better in the second half, picked up the road win, and improved to 7-1 on the season.  Their only loss remains to be their game at Texas Southern, which is looking more and more like an anomaly as Arizona State continues to win.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-SOUTH DAKOTA STATE AT KENT STATE.  South Dakota State has played a tough schedule, so their 3-4 record is more indicative of their schedule than them.  They’ve got another really tough road game tonight against a Kent State team that is coming off a loss at Houston where they actually had a lead with less than a minute to go, so the question is is Kent State good enough to put together a long enough string of wins to make a run at the bubble?

-WAKE FOREST AT CLEMSON (ACC).  Wake is off to a 7-1 start and is coming off a really nice win at Wisconsin, so a team that was basically an afterthought coming into the season is off to a very good start and has our attention.  Clemson is off to a respectable 6-2 start, but the bulk of their wins have been home buy games, so they still need to build up their resume.

-PITTSBURGH AT NC STATE (ACC).  NC State is 7-1 and had a couple of decent wins down in Atlantis, but they still have some work to do.  This is a winnable conference home game and they need to hold serve tonight.

-UMASS AT HARVARD.  Both teams have surprisingly good records, and while UMass probably won’t make it all the way to the NCAA Tournament, they are much improved, are coming in with a 5-1 record, and looking for their second road win of the year against a very respectable Harvard team.  We’ll keep watching both of them until they give us a reason not to.

-BAYLOR VS GONZAGA (Sioux Falls SD).  A neutral floor match-up between two probable protected seeds who were picked as Final Four contenders coming into the season!  What’s not to like about this??  Baylor really got their noses bloodied the other night at Marquette in a very surprising 96-70 blowout loss, so tonight is a chance for a huge bounce back.  Gonzaga has not exactly looked like a top five team every time they’ve taken the floor either, and could really use a win like this on their resume if they are thinking to (again) end up with a #1 seed.

-ILLINOIS AT MARYLAND (Big Ten).  Both teams have looked really good this season, both have good records, both have good wins, and both are in the rankings.  You couldn’t ask for a much better conference opener!!

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

-Brown @ Bryant – Bryant can get to 7-1 on the season
-Eastern Kentucky @ James Madison – JMU has a good team, but is coming off a damaging loss to Valpraiso and needs to rebound tonight
-Towson @ Long Island – Towson can improve to 8-1 and pick up their fourth road win of the season
-Florida A&M @ Georgia – buy game
-Colgate @ Auburn – Colgate is looking like the top team in the Patriot League, and they do have a nice win at Syracuse, but they’re probably overmatched tonight
-UT Arlington @ LSU – buy game
-Occidental (nonD1) @ San Diego State – buy game

Under The Radar Game of the Day – Friday, December 2nd

Appalachian State (5-3) at Charlotte (6-2) – 7:00 PM ET (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to the Queen City of North Carolina where the hometown Charlotte 49ers will host the Appalachian State Mountaineers in an intrastate battle. Charlotte is coming off of a last-second win at crosstown rival Davidson; Jackson Threadgill hit a 3 at the buzzer to give the 49ers a 68-66 victory. Prior to that game, the 49ers had a runner-up finish at the Myrtle Beach Invitational with wins against Boise State and Tulsa before losing to UMass in the title game.

Appalachian State looked like they might be turning the corner after a subpar 1-2 record in their home multi-team event; they won at East Tennessee State 74-70 just prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. But despite 12 points from Donovan Gregory and 11 points from Terence Harcum, App State’s upset bid at home against Furman fell short in a 65-61 loss.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games – Thursday, Dec 1st

For our latest UNDER THE RADAR Video Podcast – CLICK HERE

NEWS AND NOTES:

-Before the season started I stated rather emphatically that I thought Indiana was overrated.  I was wrong.  They remain unbeaten after knocking off North Carolina 77-65 in a game that they pretty much controlled last night, and if you add that on to their road win at Xavier that is a very good profile.  The Hoosiers are for real.  They have a lot of tough tests coming up between now and March, but they are good enough to pass enough of them to stay in the hunt for a protected seed.

-Yesterday I said that Notre Dame was perhaps the worst 5-1 team I had ever seen.  Well, after they blew Michigan State’s doors off in a 70-52 win in South Bend, today I’m saying that Notre Dame appears to be a very good 6-1 team!!  We all liked the Irish coming in to this season, and to see them sweat out several home buy games was shocking.  That made yesterday’s blowout win against a battle-tested Michigan State team…well…shocking.  I guess the Irish have woken up and eaten their Wheaties now.

-It seems as though every game Drake had played this season they slept through their alarm, let a team that we thought they were much better than hang around, but still manage to get the win in the end.  Well, yesterday, they got off to a slow start at Indiana State, fell behind, came back in the second half and appeared to be in control late in the game, but then couldn’t finish it off.  Indiana State picked up a huge win in the conference opener 75-73 on their home court.  These are likely two of the best teams in the Missouri Valley, and they will see each other again on Jan 24th at Drake, so this is a HUGE win for the Trees!  As for Drake, does this loss finally wake them up a little bit?  I still think they are a solid top 40 team, and that they could end up stringing together enough wins to crack the top 25 before the season is over.  We shall see, I suppose.  One Drake player that was NOT asleep was Roman Penn.  He had 32pts in this game, and put on an outstanding overall performance.

-The other big result from last night was New Mexico’s win at Saint Mary’s.  New Mexico came into the game unbeaten, but for the most part was untested.  Saint Mary’s looks to be a clear Tournament caliber team, so playing them on the road certainly qualifies as a test.  New Mexico picked up a REALLY nice 69-65 win, and that certainly ups the value of their resume.

-Duke held serve against Ohio State 81-72 at Cameron.  This loss won’t really set Ohio State back at all since it’s possible that Duke will go unbeaten at home this year, so…no worries for the Buckeyes.

-Butler handed Kansas State their first loss of the season with a 76-64 home win.  Butler is a modest 5-3 on the year, but they remain unbeaten at home.  I don’t think they’ll be inside the bubble come March, but they likely won’t be the doormats of the Big East either.

-Marshall has now won six straight since losing their season opener at Queens, and beat a pretty good Akron team 68-57 yesterday.  The game was at Marshall, but it was still a game where the Herd played a good team and were in control the whole way.  We are now starting to keep more and more of an eye on this Marshall team.

-Rutgers went into Miami FL in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge game, and ended up falling 68-61.  I still say this Miami team, that has only one loss on the year and has pretty much all the key players from a team that was in the Elite Eight a year ago, is being grossly undervalued by the media.  How the hell are they not in the top 25??  Miami is now 7-1 on the season, which should surprise no one.  As for Rutgers, because of how good I think this Miami team is, I now think Rutgers has quite a bit of life.  They’re still a respectable 5-2 on the year, and given how well they played in this game without some of their key players, Rutgers might be setting themselves up for a big year too.

-Western Kentucky is now 7-1 on the year with two true road wins after their win at Austin Peay last night.  The overall record is impressive.  Their performance last night was not as they just barely scraped by 75-74, but they did still pick up the win.

-TCU improved to 6-1 with a nice home win over Providence.  Whatever was wrong with them when they were sweating out (and even losing one) of their buy games no longer appears to be wrong.  Sometimes this happens.  Teams lose a game they shouldn’t, and then suddenly become noticeably better.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-OKLAHOMA STATE AT UCONN (Big East-Big 12 Battle).  Oklahoma State has been a little slow out of the starting gate, but they are still a respectable 5-2.  In order to get this win, though, they’ll have to play much better than they have at any point this season.  UConn is unbeaten, they’ve past some very tough tests, and are showing all the early signs of being a protected seed caliber team.

-CREIGHTON AT TEXAS (Big East-Big 12 Battle).  Another battle between two top ten teams!!  We’ve seen a lot of them these first two weeks, and it’s been great!  Both these teams are ranked high, and both have won big games to earn the rankings.  This is a huge resume boosting caliber game, but regardless of what happens it’s possible/probable that both will end up with protected seeds come March.

-ARIZONA AT UTAH (Pac 12).  Arizona is unbeaten on the season, and they were super impressive out in Maui.  This is their first true road game of the season (as well as it being their conference opener), so it would actually add something to their resume that they don’t currently have.

-ARIZONA STATE AT COLORADO (Pac 12),  It was very easy to just dismiss (and sort of laugh at) Arizona State when they lost to Texas Southern.  The thing is, that is the only game they’ve lost, and they looked really good out in the Legends Classic.  If they can pick up this game on the road then not only should they not be tossed aside, but it may be time to start taking them seriously again.  Colorado is all over the place.  They are perhaps the nation’s most schizophrenic team.  This is an important game for them as well.

-SETON HALL AT KANSAS (Big East-Big 12 Battle).  Kansas looks like a solid top ten caliber team, and Seton Hall looks like a possible NIT team.  This appears to be a rather big mismatch where Kansas should be able to hold serve.

-UTAH TECH AT UTAH STATE (Bee Hive).  Utah State is unbeaten on the season, and will likely stay that way.

-WASHINGTON AT OREGON STATE (Pac 12).  Oregon State is just 3-4, but they did have some moments In the Phil Knight Tournament that demonstrate they are capable of being competitive.  The real story of this game is Washington, who comes in at 6-1 with a pretty good win (at least I think so) against Saint Mary’s.  This is the conference opener, and the first true road game for the Huskies, and Oregon State is good enough to test them.

-UCLA AT STANFORD (Pac 12).  UCLA has two losses to really highly ranked teams, and they were competitive in both games, so they are probably better than their current record and ranking indicate.  This is certainly a winnable conference road game for them.

-WASHINGTON STATE AT OREGON (Pac 12).  Oregon is off to a rather disappointing 3-4 start.  They’re still talented, but they need to start stringing together some wins.

Under the Radar – Nov 30th

Tonight’s featured conference is Conference USA.  We discuss the great starts that UAB is off to, Charlotte’s big win at Davidson and the Hornets Nest Trophy that they won, and Florida Atlantic’s big start.  We talk about how the conference having fewer teams and being a single division format actually makes it more compelling.  And, we continue to take a second, third, and fourth look at the ridiculous Hornets Nest Trophy that looks more like an elephant turd than a hornets nest.

From there we run through the other 21 Under the Radar leagues and discuss the good start that Towson (despite one surprising loss) and Charleston are off to in the Colonial, UC Irvine’s near upset at San Diego State and how even without it they’ve got some really good wins on their resume already, Kent State’s near upset win at Houston, Sam Houston’s good start, Drake’s loss at Indiana State and what that does to their chances of making the field, and much more.  And, as we do every week, we finish up with this week’s UTR Top Ten.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

Happy Birthday! HoopsHD interviews JMU legend Linton Townes

CLICK HERE for today’s Daily Rundown of News, Notes, and Highlighted Games

James Madison is now in the Sun Belt after almost 4 decades in the CAA but 1 of their best players did his best work during their time in the ECAC South. Linton Townes arrived at JMU while they were still an Independent but by the time he left he had helped lead the Dukes to the 1st 2 NCAA tourney appearances in school history. He was drafted by Portland in 1982, ended up playing for 4 different NBA teams, then spent several years playing professionally in Europe/Israel. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Linton about being a 2-time All-American and playing in the NBA. Today is Linton’s 63rd birthday so let us be the 1st to wish him a happy 1!

Why did you decide to go to James Madison? It was the only D-1 scholarship that I was offered and I did not want my parents to have to pay for college. Jerry Falwell called me up himself and tried to get me to go to Liberty but I stuck with JMU…even though my dad was a Baptist minister!

Take me through the 1981 NCAA tourney:
You scored 19 PTS in a 6-PT win over Georgetown: how big a deal was it to get the 1st tourney win in school history? It was a very big deal, especially against a Georgetown team with a bunch of known players like Sleepy Floyd.

You scored 12 PTS in a 9-PT loss to Notre Dame: what was the reaction like when you got back to campus? It was really exciting because nobody expected us to go that far. There was a crowd waiting for us when we got back: I still smile when thinking about it!

Take me through the 1982 NCAA tourney:
You scored 12 PTS in a 7-PT win over Ohio State: what did you learn from the 1981 tourney that helped you in 1982? 1 thing that we learned was not to be overwhelmed by the spotlight so we were not as nervous the 2nd time around. It was a difficult game and we did not play our best…but we still played well enough to win.

You scored 12 PTS in a 2-PT loss to eventual champion UNC: could you tell at the time that Michael Jordan (who only scored 6 PTS) was going to become a legend? I do not know about “legend” but I knew that he would be special. He went by me for a baseline layup like I was standing still and almost hit his shoulder on the backboard!

You were a 2-time All-American/1982 conference POY: what did it mean to you to win such outstanding honors? It was nice but I had more fun winning as a team and celebrating with my teammates. I am proud of those honors but at the time it did not mean as much as just getting to play every day and be successful.

In the summer of 1982 you were drafted in the 2nd round by Portland (2 spots ahead of Derek Smith): did you see that as a validation of your college career, or the realization of a lifelong dream of reaching the NBA, or other? It was really a surprise for me. I worked hard but it was always fun. When I got a scholarship I was just happy to be there. It showed me that I could play with the rest of these guys and I was glad to have the opportunity. I fully expected to be a teacher once I got done with college and never had the NBA as 1 of my expectations.

You lost to the Lakers in the 1983 Western Conference Semifinals: what was it like to go from being in college 1 year to facing the defending NBA champs the following year? It was a very different level. I went back to play pickup games at JMU and realized how much easier it was for me after having to try to score against (8-time All-Defensive player) Michael Cooper!

After joining the Spurs you lost to Denver in the decisive Game 5 of the 1985 Western Conference 1st round with the Spurs: where does that rank among the most devastating losses of your career? I joined the team late in the season. I was not as tied to that game as most of my teammates so I do not rank it that high but I do not think I played well in that series.

When people look back on your career, how do you want to be remembered the most? I guess just as being the captain of the best team in JMU history. I had a long pro career overseas so I hope to be remembered as a good player who only had 1 or 2 losing seasons during my career.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games – Wednesday, Nov 30th

NEWS AND NOTES:

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

-Virginia trailed for most of the game at Michigan, and had to come from behind in the second half and then make a big defensive play at the end of the game to hold on for a 70-68 win.  It was probably the best the Wolverines looked all year.  They certainly had a chance to win it, and some would say there was a foul at the end of the game, but to me it looked like a really good defensive play by the Hoos.

-A team that did NOT have their best game of the year yesterday was Baylor.  In fact they barely bothered to get off the bus at Marquette, and got absolutely wrecking-balled 96-70.  It was Baylor’s first true road game, and while Marquette hasn’t looked bad at all this year, they’re not exactly on the level of Kansas, and Texas, and…well…nearly all of the Big 12, so Baylor will need to get their road issues figured out.  As for Marquette, you kind of have to sit up and take notice of them after they absolutely blew the doors off of a top ten team like that.

-The game of the night was UC Irvine at San Diego State.  It seesawed back and forth all night, and you got the impression that had they played for 400 minutes instead of 40, the largest lead either team would have managed would have been 5pts.  UC Irvine had a lead with ten seconds to go, San Diego State hit a 3 in the final seconds which ultimately ended up being the game winner in a 72-69 game.  It’s a good win for the Aztecs, but another takeaway from this game is how good UC Irvine is.  They blew out Oregon at Oregon earlier this year, this was just their second loss of the year, and it came in a very close game against a legit top 25 caliber team.

-UMass is now 6-1 on the year after their win at South Florida.  South Florida is hardly a good team, but it was still a road win and UMass is looking a lot better than most of the rest of the A10 right now (which, admittedly, isn’t saying much, but still…)

-Duqeusne is also 6-1 after their home win against UC Santa Barbara.  UCSB is hardly a top level team, but it was still a win for a Duquesne team that’s looking a lot better than most of the rest of the A10 right now (which, admittedly, isn’t saying much, but still…)

-Charlotte got a really nice/feelgood win over their rivals Davidson 68-66 with a shot at the buzzer to win the game.  Charlotte isn’t a team we expected much out of, but they’re now 6-2 on the year with a pretty notable road win to go along with that record.

-Clemson held off a pretty good Penn State team 101-94 in overtime for the win.  Clemson is probably closer to an NIT team than a Tournament team, but one takeaway from this is that beating NIT teams on the road will still get you some credit from the committee, and Penn State (who’s still got a very good 6-2 record) was right in there for the entire game.  They didn’t get the win, but Penn State showed (again) that they’re better than what most people predicted them to be coming into the season.

-Missouri remains unbeaten at 8-0 and picked up a really nice win at Wichita State, who had been playing well coming into this game.  It was the first true road win for the Tigers on the year, and it certainly polishes up their early season resume.

-Southern Miss is also 8-0 on the season (although some of those were against nonD1 teams) after their win against Montana.

-Wake Forest, who was a team we all thought was kind of ‘meh’ this year, got a really nice road win at Wisconsin 78-75, and improves to 7-1 on the year.  It is typically VERY difficult to win at Wisconsin.  Just ask all the ranked teams in the Big Ten who fail to do it year after year.  Just like that, Wake has gone from ‘meh’ to “oh DAMN!’

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-WYOMING AT SANTA CLARA – Wyoming has been without their best player Graham Ike, and it has certainly impacted their season and are off to just a 3-3 start.  Santa Clara is 5-2 with some decent wins on their resume so far.  Both still have a ton of work to do, but this is a good game for both these teams at this juncture of the season.

-KANSAS STATE AT BUTLER (Big East-Big 12 Battle).  K State is unbeaten on the season with some pretty decent wins on their profile.  They have another winnable road game tonight.

-AKRON AT MARSHALL.  It was kind of easy to write Marshall off after they lost their opener to Queens, but they haven’t lost since.  They’ll be tested by an Akron team that’s just 3-3 on the season so far, but that’s also probably better than their record indicates.

-DRAKE AT INDIANA STATE (Missouri Valley).  You don’t get many conference games in the month of November, but we’ve got one tonight, and it’s a big one.  Drake is a team most of us were expecting to be in the top 25 by the end of the year, and they come into this game unbeaten and are coming off what was perhaps their best performance of the season.  Indiana State has been a bit of a surprise and comes in with a 6-1 record of their own.  With the Trees being at home, this is a really big test for Drake.

-RICHMOND AT TOLEDO.  Toledo did not do well in their exempt event and basically needs to rampage through the rest of their schedule to get a serious look from the committee.  Richmond is off to a somewhat disappointing 3-3 start and could use a road win like this to help them get things turned back around.

-VANDERBILT AT VCU.  Both teams have a lot of work to do.  I really don’t think there is anymore to say.

-PURDUE AT FLORIDA STATE (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  Purdue was extremely impressive out at the Phil Knight Events in Oregon, and likely won’t be challenged all that much today despite being on the road.

-OHIO STATE AT DUKE (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  Ohio State played well out in Maui, but playing on the road at Duke will be their biggest challenge of the season so far.  Duke is coming off a blowout loss to Purdue and will be lookin to rebound from that.

-RUTGERS AT MIAMI FL (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  This game is not on a lot of people’s radars, but Miami FL is 6-1 on the season and has basically their entire roster back from a team that made the Elite Eight a year ago, and Rutgers comes in at 5-1.  The thing is, about 100 teams would be 5-1 against the schedule Rutgers has played so far, so this is their first real test.

-SMU AT TEXAS A&M.  TAMU got beaten up pretty good in their MTE and now stands at 4-2 and needs to start stringing together some wins to get back on track.

-GEORGETOWN AT TEXAS TECH (Big East-Big 12 Battle).  Texas Tech has lost two of three and should be able to rebound at home against a Georgetown team that isn’t good, but also isn’t quite as bad as they were a year ago.

-PROVIDENCE AT TCU (Big East-Big 12 Battle).  TCU kind of slept through their alarm the first few weeks of the season, but they looked really good in their last game against Iowa and now appear to be on track.  Providence is off to a modest 5-2 start, but has yet to win any games that weren’t home buy games.

-LMU AT COLORADO STATE.  Both these teams have work to do, but both are off to better starts than what many (including myself) were probably expecting, so this should be a good game to watch tonight.

-UTEP AT NEW MEXICO STATE (Back Range).  UTEP is 5-1 on the year, but still lookin for their first road win, and will be challenged on the road against a rival tonight.

-SAMFORD AT DEPAUL.  Samford is a team we have high expectations for this year, and they come in at 6-2, but they’re coming off an absurd loss to a nonD1 team and will need to rebound from that.  DePaul isn’t the best team in the world, but it can still be hard to win there.

-NORTH CAROLINA AT INDIANA (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).  North Carolina has lost two straight and has fallen from 1st to 18th in the rankings, and they’ll be challenged in a big way tonight against an Indiana team that’s 6-0 and who has a win at Xavier.  Still, this is a big test for the Hoosiers, who outside of the win at Xavier have not been tested at all.

-MICHIGAN STATE AT NOTRE DAME (ACC/Big East Challenge).  Notre Dame is perhaps the least impressive 5-1 team I’ve ever seen.  Nearly all their wins have been close games at home against bad UTR teams.  Michigan State has played about as tough of a schedule as any team possibly can and already has some big wins, but this would be their first true road win of the season if they’re able to pull it off.

-NEW MEXICO AT SAINT MARY’S.  New Mexico is unbeaten, but this is their first real test of the season.  We will find out tonight if the Lobos really are for real.  SMC hasn’t played too many away from home yet, but from all accounts are a team that we expect to land solidly inside the bubble and in the NCAA Tournament.

-USC AT CALIFORNIA (Pac 12).  USC is off to a bit of a slow start, but this should be a winnable conference road game for them.

BUY GAMES:

-Merrimack @ UMass Lowell – Lowel can get to 7-1 on the season
-Western Michigan @ Dayton – Dayton just 3-4 on the year
-Howard @ Yale – Yale can improve to 7-1 on the season and rebound from a tough loss at Colorado
-McNeese @ Tennessee
-Maine @ Fordham – Fordham can get to 7-1 on the year
-Jacksonville @ UAB – both teams with just one loss
-North Dakota @ Iowa State
-North Alabama @ Memphis
-Florida A&M @ Florida
-SELA @ Xavier
-Tennessee State @ Saint Louis
-Little Rock @ San Francisco
-Cal State Fullerton @ Seattle U
