The Hoops HD Report: January 18th

Chad is joined by Joby, Jon, and David and they review a huge week for Virginia, who is suddenly the hottest team in the ACC.  Virginia Tech also keeps winning, and isn’t too far behind them, while both Duke and North Carolina are way off the map right now.  UCLA and USC look like the two teams to beat in the Pac 12.  The Big 12 looks fantastic with Baylor and Kansas (who are playing tonight), Texas Tech’s big week, and Oklahoma State is also making a lot of noise.  Utah State in the Mountain West had a big week with two wins over San Diego State, and Boise State is also looking really good.   Alabama is probably the hottest team in the SEC right now, while Kentucky’s struggles continue.  We talk about all that, and more.

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

Staff Bracket (From the Puppet): Monday, Jan 18th

Just so everyone knows what they are looking at…

The STAFF BRACKETS at Hoops HD are NOT an attempt to guess the Selection Committee.  Jon Teitel is our Selection Committee Guessing Expert.  If anyone else tried to do it as accurately as he does it, we would fail, so we don’t even try.  This is merely what WE PERSONALLY THINK the NCAA Tournament should look like if the season ended TODAY.

Below are some of my notes on the bracket, and below that are some comments from other staff members.  If any of them disagree with anything I have done, they are wrong!!

OTHERS CONSIDERED: Michigan State, Colorado State, Loyola Chicago, VCU, Tulsa, North Carolina, Florida, Arkansas, Indiana, SMU, Duke, Syracuse, UAB, Missouri State

NOTES FROM DAVID

-I’ll start with Illinois on the #7 line.  Please notice that no one that they have beaten is seeded ahead of them.  In fact their best win is arguably at home against Minnesota, and I say arguably because Minney has yet to win a road game.  Penn State and Northwestern are nice road wins, but relatively speaking a #7 seed is a nice seed.  They have lost to every team that they’ve played that’s safely inside the bubble who’s actually won a road game.  It may actually be easier to argue that they shouldn’t even be as good as a #7 seed as it is to argue that they should be better than a #7 seed.

-Oklahoma State is appealing their NCAA Tournament ban, and while a case is under appeal a team is actually eligible to compete, so as of now they are eligible for our brackets.  They have a really solid body of work with wins at Texas Tech and against Kansas, and some other notable road wins against Wichita State and Marquette.  That seems protected seed caliber to me!

-It is very rare that half of a conference ever ended up as protected seeds, but I’ve got half the Big 12 on the top four lines.

-Marquette is the most schizophrenic team out there these days.  They are in my field because of their two monster wins against Creighton and Wisconsin, and while they do have a lot of losses, none of them are terrible.

-It’s tough to know for sure what to do with Saint Bonaventure because of so few OOC games, but I like what I’ve seen so far, and this bracket is all about me!  So…they are in!

OTHER STAFF COMMENTS/CRITICISMS:

FROM CHAD:

– I will start with Villanova.  I get it that the reason they have not played since December 23 is not their fault — but in the end, you get a protected seed, and even a #1 seed, by beating teams.  The win at Texas is great, but beyond that one win, all the Wildcats have done is win at a good but not great Marquette team.  Oh, and they lost to Virginia Tech.  By the eye test, from what we saw, I think this is one of the best 4 teams in the nation.  But, I cannot justify a 1 seed for a team that is not playing while others (like Kansas and Iowa) are playing and winning games against very good teams.  2-1 against the top two quadrants simply is not there.  I would probably have them as low as the 3 line right now, in fact.

– Speaking of Virginia Tech, I think David is smoking something when he puts them on the 4 line.  Yes, they beat Villanova — but that is all they have really done.  The Hokies have one true road win and it was only at Wake Forest.  I get that they beat Duke this week, but that is a Tier 3 win — I don’t give it much stock unless and until the Blue Devils turn their season around.  In other words, the Hokies are about 4 lines too high.

– I agree with David that Maryland belongs inn a 7/10 game — just as the 10 seed and not the 7.  Wins at Illinois and Wisconsin are great (though according to David, Illinois is nothing special so that should not count as much).  However, the Terps are only one game over .500 against D1 competition, and 3 games under .500 in conference.  The schedule they have played and will continue to play is intense, but in the end, you don’t get to wear white in the first round by losing a ton of games.  Maryland belongs in the field, just not nearly this high.

– Of course, I need to address Illinois.  Unlike Maryland, for example, the Illini have a decent overall record and are 5-3 in the Big Ten.  This includes 4 wins over teams that are either in the field or at least on the bubble.  That is more than, oh say…1 seed Villanova!   I am not saying that Illinois needs to be a protected seed (though personally I would have them as such), but putting them on the 7 line is just plain stupid.  #StupidPuppet

– Utah State.  Sweeping a San Diego State team (at home) that is proving that they are not nearly as good as we thought they would be and doing absolutely nothing else puts you in the board for consideration.  It does not put you in the field.  Giving them a 10 seed is a joke.  They would be my 5th team out right now.

– Apparently beating a Kentucky team that isn’t even under consideration and losing at home to Hofstra is good enough to put Richmond in the field.  The Spiders would be on my board, but are not close to the field at all.  The Bonnies, on the other hand, I would not have in, but I can live with David’s reasoning, as they are one of the toughest teams to evaluate right now.  I won’t complain about that pick even if I would not have chosen them myself.

– Now let’s go to my list of teams that did not even merit consideration (and I personally have 13 teams beyond the field at least Under Consideration):  Northwestern.  Seriously, this pick is just plain awful.   Teams that belong in before the Wildcats (and Utah State and Richmond as well): Michigan State, Colorado State, Tulsa, North Carolina, TCU, Indiana, Providence.  Seriously — how can you put Northwestern in and not even have TCU on the Board???

– Among the single bid leagues, both Georgia State and Northeastern are way under-seeded.  But, at this point, I am shocked David did not add an Ivy League team in as well, because he clearly has no idea what is going on this season in college basketball.

– All in all, I would say that David did a solid job this week, but that would be an utter and complete lie.  This field sucks.  Please ignore it.  And delete him from your list of Twitter account you follow.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Monday, Jan 18th

-A very light day in the world of college hoops.  VA Tech got a scare at Wake Forest yesterday, but held on to win, and Western Kentucky won their second straight game against Marshall, which should put them back in the C-USA driver’s seat and keep their hopes for landing inside the bubble alive.

-Iowa also had not trouble at Northwestern and ended up blowing them out.  Iowa looks like  solid protected seed, and Northwestern looks like a team that’s trying to hold on to a spot on the bubble.

-We will be recording this week’s Hoops HD Report tonight, so be on the lookout for that.

-SAINT JOHN’S AT UCONN.  UConn is really on a roll, is safely in the top half of the bracket right now, and shouldn’t have too much trouble holding serve in this one.

-FLORIDA STATE AT LOUISVILLE (ACC).  Louisville really laid an egg in their last game at Miami, but they still have a really good resume overall.  Florida State has looked solid as well, but a road win in a game like this would really give them a boost.

-KANSAS AT BAYLOR (Big 12).  This is the showcase game of the evening, and perhaps of the entire week.  Baylor is pretty much the consensus #2 team in the country, and Kansas is shooting for a spot on the #1 seed line, so it’s definitely a clash of the titans type of game.

Hartford (9-5, 6-3) at UMBC (9-3, 5-2) – 1:00 PM EST (ESPN3)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day is the second game of a pivotal two-game series between the Hartford Hawks and the UMBC Retrievers. Austin Williams had 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead Hartford to a 70-63 victory yesterday; Marquette transfer Traci Carter also added 16 points, 6 assists and 5 steals for the Hawks. Hartford could improve to 3-3 away from home in America East play with a big series looming at home against Vermont next weekend.

UMBC coming into the weekend was 5-1 in America East play, but with yesterday’s loss, they are now 1-2 at home after an inexplicable split against last-place Binghamton two weeks ago. They are a perfect 4-0 away from home thanks to road sweeps at UAlbany and New Hampshire. Brandon Horvath has led the Retrievers with 15.5 points a game and 8.4 rebounds a game.

NEWS AND NOTES

-Someone pointed out yesterday that they thought that Gonzaga had a C- game at Saint Mary’s, but that they still won rather easily.  That’s the best way to describe it.  Even when they don’t play anywhere close to their best game, they can still easily beat decent teams on the road.

-Baylor really got a fight from Texas Tech, which was not a surprise, but ended up picking up the huge road win.  Baylor was already a #1 caliber seed, but whenever you pick up road wins against protected seeds it is worth pointing out.

-Minnesota continues to look like the Harlem Globetrotters at home and the Washington Generals on the road.  They handed Michigan their first loss of the season in a 75-57 blowout.

-Creighton, who looked like a solid top ten team, went on the road and fell to Butler in overtime.  It is a bit of a surprising result and setback for the Bluejays, but only a bit of one.  They’re still a solid team that just had a blah day.

-What Virginia did to Clemson is probably illegal.  I believe it was 23-1 at one point, and it never really got any closer.  Clemson had just 3 points halfway through the first half.  It was a huge statement win against a ranked team for the Hoos.

-Illinois dropped another game as they fell at home to Ohio State.  I think Illinois is good, but they haven’t done much at all this season to indicate that they are a protected seed caliber team or that they belong in the top 15.  I think a lot of people are overvaluing them.

-Louisville had a bit of an inexplicable loss on the road against Miami FL team that had really be reeling.  The Canes pretty much led from tip to buzzer and were in control the whole way.  It is a bit of a head scratching loss for a Louisville team that had been looking pretty good.

-Pitt continues to distance themselves from the really bad season opening loss and look more and more like a tournament team.  They blew Syracuse off the court yesterday.  Syracuse isn’t particularly good, but the are at least decent, and Pitt just boat-raced them.

-San Diego State fell for the second game in a row to Utah State, which is a big win for the Aggies as they improve to 11-3 on the year and put two really good wins on their resume, but also a setback for a San Diego State team that’s suddenly not looking anything like a protected seed.

-Kentucky fell on the road to Auburn and is now 4-8 on the season.  I think you can forget about all the things I said about how they appeared to be improving.

-Alabama blew out Arkansas and continues to look as good as anyone in the SEC.  If they aren’t in the rankings when they come out tomorrow then we’ll need to get all new voters.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-IOWA AT NORTHWESTERN (Big Ten).  Northwestern is in a tailspin, and being able to pull out of it today against a top five Iowa team is a super tall order.  Iowa is still within reach of the #1 line, whereas Northwestern is trying to stay inside the bubble.

-PENN STATE AT PURDUE (Big Ten).  Purdue has won their last two and is looking more and more like a solid tournament team.  They need to hold serve at home today.

-UCF AT HOUSTON (American).  UCF has looked good at times, but not enough of the time to call them a solid tournament team.  Houston should be able to hold serve and cruise toward a protected seed.

-WESTERN KENTUCKY AT MARSHALL (Conference USA).  WKU has slumped a little bit since conference play began, but they still look like the most talented team in the league and are still good enough to win out and play their way inside the bubble.  They won at Marshall the other night, and if they can repeat that tonight they should be running down hill most of the rest of the way.

-MEMPHIS AT TULSA (American).  Tulsa has put together some big wins, but has also suffered some setbacks.  This is the kind of game they need to hold serve in if they want to be inside the bubble at the end.

-SANTA CLARA AT SAN DIEGO (West Coast).  Santa Clara’s margin for error is extremely small (unless they beat Gonzaga, of course) but I still think they have a path (albeit narrow) to landing inside the bubble.

-NORTHERN IOWA AT LOYOLA CHICAGO (Missouri Valley).  If Loyola Chicago can finish strong and collect some wins against the likes of Drake and Missouri State, then they may be in the discussion for a bid come March.

-VIRGINIA TECH AT WAKE FOREST (ACC).  I kinda keep waiting for Virginia Tech to begin to taper off, but it hasn’t happened yet, which makes me now think that it’s not going ot happen.  They’re coming off of a win against Duke and have another winnable road game tonight.
