NEWS AND NOTES

-Houston bounced back from their loss to Tulsa with a big road win over SMU, who appears to be the second strongest team in the American.  After last night I’m inclined to think that Houston is still a clear protected seed caliber team that just an off night against Tulsa.

-Michigan absolutely pasted Northwestern last night 85-66, which raises the question…how good actually is Northwestern??  Are they a legit top 25 team, or did they just have one incredible week?

-Minnesota blasted Ohio State 77-60.  At home Minney looks like a Final Four team.  But, they’ve only played one road game and lost it so if they want to get into the discussion for a protected seed they need to keep winning once they start playing more road games.

-Drake remains unbeaten after blowing Southern Illinois off the floor.  SIU had been having an impressive season coming into that game, so it was a bit of a statement win for Drake.  The two square off again tonight.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-STANFORD AT OREGON STATE (Pac 12).  Stanford is off to a bit of a slower start than we thought they’d be off to and they need to pick it up between now and the end in order to land on the right side of the bubble.

-WINTHROP AT CHARLESTON SOUTHERN (Big South).  I believe there is room for Winthrop inside the bubble if they can continue to blow through Big South play.

-SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AT DRAKE (Missouri Valley).  Drake won the first meeting last night rather decisively.  They look to remain unbeaten and to make a case that they belong inside the bubble.

-MARYLAND AT INDIANA (Big Ten).  Both of these teams have work to do, so tonight’s game is big for both of them.

-WEST VIRGINIA AT OKLAHOMA STATE (Big 12).  WVU is looking to bounce back from an earlier loss to Oklahoma, but it wont’ be easy.  This Oklahoma State team has been playing really well and is coming off a big win against Texas Tech.  If they get a waiver from the NCAA they will be safely in the field if they continue to hold serve.

-COLORADO STATE AT SAN DIEGO STATE (Mountain West).  This game was insane when these two met just a few days ago with Colorado State coming back from 24 down to get the win and get time scalp for their resume.  Both look like tournament teams, but with limited opportunities at committee-impressing-wins the rest of the way tonight’s game is a big deal.

Happy Birthday!: HoopsHD interviews Don Donoher about Dayton legend Don May

If you thought that the history of Dayton basketball started with 2020 national POY Obi Toppin then you need to make a New Year’s resolution to do a little more research! Don May was a hometown hero who started at Belmont High School before walking a few blocks west to become a Flyer in 1964. He helped lead Dayton to the Sweet 16 in 1966, made the NCAA title game in 1967, and was named NIT MVP in 1968. After being drafted 30th overall by the Knicks in 1968 he ended up winning an NBA title in 1970 and was elected to his alma mater’s Hall of Fame in 1974. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to chat with Don’s college coach Don Donoher about his former player and how he remembers him the most. Today is May’s 75th birthday so let us be the 1st to wish him a happy 1!

May played alongside fellow future All-American Bill Hosket at Belmont High School, where they won the 1964 Ohio state AA title and became the 1st teammates ever to be named 1st-team All-Ohio: how dominant was that Belmont team, and how easy was it to convince him to come to Dayton for college after literally growing up next door to the campus on Kiefaber Street? That Belmont team is still considered today as 1 of the best teams in state history. Bill’s father played at Ohio State and Donnie literally grew up with the UD campus as his playground. A lot of schools pursued him but we were very fortunate to get 50% of the Belmont package.

Take me through the 1967 NCAA tourney:
Just to get out of the Midwest Region you needed a 2-PT OT win over Western Kentucky, a 1-PT win over Tennessee, and a 5-PT OT win over Virginia Tech: how did the team have anything left in the tank before facing Coach Dean Smith and UNC in the Final 4? You know how resilient those young guys are! We went to the tourney the previous year and probably had a better team in 1966, but we limped along and proved the power of prayer because we were lucky in all 3 games.

After upsetting the Tar Heels, May had 21 PTS/17 REB in a loss to UCLA in the title game: what was it like to face Lew Alcindor (20 PTS/18 REB)/Coach John Wooden with a title on the line? It was pretty awesome but we were a bit of a no-show to be honest. Now you have a day to prepare but back then the Final 4 was on a Friday and the title game was on a Saturday. Had they not shown us mercy they would have won by 30 PTS. We trailed UNC early before he went on a streak and made 13 consecutive FGs that led us to victory.

In the 1968 NIT title game you beat Kansas and May was named MVP after scoring 22 PTS: how was he able to play his best when it mattered the most? That was just his nature. As much as he could score he took so much pride in being a physical player around the boards with excellent timing. He had a will to win and seemed to rise to the occasion when the moment meant the most: he was a horse. We were supposed to be top-10 in the country but started 7-9 before getting rolling. We were probably the 16th of 16 teams invited but he put us on his shoulders.

He was a 2-time All-American: what did it mean to him to receive such outstanding honors? He is the most humble person you could ever run across. He does not bask in the glory of what he has done: if you spent an evening out with him you would not even know that he played basketball. He never liked the spotlight and is just a great human being.

His career totals of 1980 PTS/1301 REB remain #2 in school history: how was he able to balance his scoring with his rebounding? He was a fine shooter even though he was not viewed as such coming out of Belmont. Donnie did not have a great handle and was not a particularly great passer but he could score around the lane. He was a great rebounder because he was so strong-willed. He was really good at tip-ins due to his timing/desire and was a very good athlete.

In the spring of 1968 he was selected in the 3rd round of the NBA draft by the Knicks and in the 3rd round of the ABA draft by the Pacers: why did he decide to sign with the Knicks, and did he have any regrets? He was single-minded about playing in the NBA. He had an agent out of Chicago named Arthur Morris and they talked about his future.

Despite Jerry West making a 60-foot buzzer-beater at the end of regulation in Game 3 of the 1970 NBA Finals, Willis Reed made a surprise return to the court in Game 7 to inspire New York to win its 1st-ever title: what did it mean to him to win an NBA title? He was very proud of that. He cannot say enough good things about Reed, both what he meant to the team and what a great person he was. There was some pretty good talent on that team besides Reed, including his former teammate Hosket.

In 1974 he was elected to the Dayton Hall of Fame and in 2007 he was elected to the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame: where do these moments rank among the highlights of his career? He does not talk much about it but it meant a lot to him on the inside.

He has referred to you as his “father figure”: how did your relationship with him change over the past 50 years from coach to mentor/lifelong friend? We are lifelong friends for sure and still talk on the phone a lot. Our 2 families are linked and he came from a great family. His mom worked on campus and he grew up 2 blocks from the Fieldhouse (where he would sneak in to shoot baskets).

When people look back on his career, how do you think that he should be remembered the most? Those who were around him feel that if there was ever a statue built in front of the arena it would have to be Don May. He carried the team to its only Final 4 and was NIT MVP, so it is tough for anyone else to compare to that.

Southern Illinois (7-1, 1-1) at Drake (11-0, 2-0) – 6:00 PM EST (ESPNU)

Today (and tomorrow, for that matter) we have a pair of teams with padded records facing off in a Missouri Valley conference tilt – the surprising Salukis of Southern Illinois hit the road to Des Moines to take on the unbeaten Drake Bulldogs. The high point for SIU was a win at Butler back in December – they ended what was a 59-game winning streak against noncon foes for Butler. However, they did follow that up with a surprising split against Evansville to open up conference play. Marcus Domask has led the Salukis with an 18.1 points per game average through 8 games this season.

Drake opened their season with a win at Kansas State and then were largely untested going into conference play with what was a 9-0 nonconference campaign. They opened up Valley play with a pair of wins at Indiana State last week. Their first game was an 18-point blowout, but they did have to come back from a 9-point deficit to win the second leg 73-66. ShanQuanj Hemphill is averaging just over 14 points a game for the Bulldogs.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Sunday, Jan 2nd

NEWS AND NOTES

-It was a busy Saturday!  Let’s start with one of the most unbelievable games that you’ll ever see.  Colorado State, who we thought was good but also knew was untested, fell behind on the road 28-4 to a San Diego State who we knew was good and who had been tested.  If you changed the channel at this point, that’s understandable.  But, Colorado State kept chipping away, and chipping away, and had pulled even in the second half, and then ended up getting a 70-67 win in a game that came down to the final play.  This is a massive win for Colorado State and makes a huge statement that they belong inside the bubble.  It’s also kind of a kick in the teeth to San Diego State, but they should be fine so long as they hold serve the rest of the year.

-Texas shocked us all yesterday.  We probably weren’t expecting them to win at Kansas, but also believed it was possible.  What we didn’t think was possible was for them to blow Kansas off their own floor, but that’s basically what they did.  Texas played a great first half and had a decent lead at the half.  They played an unreal second half and blew Kansas off the floor.  What a HUGE statement from the Longhorns!

-Alabama picked up a huge scalp yesterday as they knocked off 7th ranked Tennessee on the road.  This is the kind of win that makes the difference between being on the bubble and safely inside the bubble.  One of the biggest wins for the Tide (on the hardwood) in a long time.

-West Virginia was another top ten team that fell yesterday (albeit not at home like Kansas and Tennessee) as Oklahoma picked up a huge statement win.  This is clearly the standout win on the Sooners’ resume at the moment.

-Iowa almost became the 4th top 10 team to lose yesterday as they seesawed back and forth with Rutgers in a game that came down to the final possession before they got the 77-75 win.  It is actually a really solid road win for the Hawkeyes given how high Rutgers is in the rankings, and how the Knights will still likely contend for a protected seed.

-Oklahoma State got a huge win at Texas Tech.  If the Pokes can get their waiver, they will be inside the bubble and in the field.

-Florida picked up a big home win against LSU in an 83-79 battle, which gets them to 2-0 in SEC play after being off for close to three weeks.

-Furman knocked off Mercer for the second time in two days, and now appears to be the class of the SoCon.  If they can run the table there may be some room for them inside the bubble, but not getting a really big OOC win is going to hurt them.

-Saint Bonaventure picked up a huge statement win at Richmond yesterday.  The game also means a ton on paper.  The Bonnies haven’t had the chance to play very many games, and you’re hoping they can still find a way to get some decent OOC games on the schedule, but as of now they’re 3-1 on the year and have a road win against a Richmond team that appeared to be among the best (if not THE best) in the Atlantic Ten.

-UCF fell at South Florida.  They have some big wins, but also have some head scratching losses to offset those.  At just 3-3 they are really going to have to hit the gas between now and the end of the season.

-UCLA picked up another big win as they knocked off Colorado at home and improved to 7-2 on the year.  The Bruins appear to be in good shape early.

-Arizona needed two overtimes to hand Washington State their first loss of the season.  Wazzu hadn’t beaten any good teams, and had quite frankly struggled against some really weak teams, so we weren’t paying too much attention to their undefeated record, but given how well they played yesterday we may need to start giving them a little more love.

-Charlotte punched a huge hole into Western Kentucky’s hopes of ending up inside the bubble as they picked up the 75-71 overtime win.  Charlotte hasn’t had that great of a season overall, but they do have home wins against Davidson and WKU, so if good teams overlook them they can beat them.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-OHIO STATE AT MINNESOTA (Big Ten).  It looks as though it’s as tough to win at Minnesota as it Is anywhere in the country, and Ohio State could use some more wins away from home to build up the quality of their resume.  Having said that, both teams are in the rankings, but teams are in good shape overall, and both have the chance to add another good win to their profiles.

-DRAKE AT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (Missouri Valley).  Really good game tonight between two of the better teams in the MVC that are out to great starts.  Southern Illinois is coming off their first loss of the season and looking to bounce back, whereas Drake is still unbeaten.  It’s a good test for both of these two.

-WAKE FOREST AT GEORGIA TECH (ACC).  Not much was expected of Wake, and they have had trouble getting games in, but they are 3-0.  Georgia Tech comes in with a decent resume at 5-3 overall with wins over Kentucky and North Carolina and are looking to keep some of that momentum going.

-HOUSTON AT SMU (American).  Houston is trying to bounce back from their first loss of the season, and they’e got one of their toughest remaining games of the season tonight against unbeaten SMU on the road.  SMU hasn’t gotten that much national attention, but that’ll change if they can win this one tonight.

-NORTHWESTERN AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten).  Michigan is unbeaten, but this is probably their biggest test of the year up to this point.  Northwestern is trying to bounce back from a loss to Iowa and keep themselves in the top 25.

-WISCONSIN AT PENN STATE (Big Ten).  Wisky is a top ten team, an apparent conference frontrunner, and a likely protected seed.  Penn State is kind of hanging on and trying to build up the type of resume that will get them inside the bubble.  Beating a team like Wisconsin would be a huge help in that regard.

Western Kentucky (8-2, 1-0) at Charlotte (4-4, 0-1) – 4:00 PM EST (Stadium)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day takes place in Charlotte where the hometown 49ers host the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky in the second leg of this weekend series. WKU won the first game 67-63 between the two teams yesterday; Taevion Hollingsworth led the Tops with 14 points. With a six-game winning streak in tow that includes a win at Alabama, WKU will be looking for what they hope will be a lucky 7 and a potential vault into the Top 25 next week.

Prior to yesterday’s loss, Charlotte had won three games in a row, including a win against crosstown rival Davidson back on the 15th of December that began their recent winning ways. They also hit a pair of free throws in the closing seconds at GW to secure a 66-65 victory against their former A-10 friends. Jahmir Young is averaging 19.4 points a game for the 49ers.
