Bracket Projection – Hoops HD Staff Bracket

This week, it is staff member John Stalica’s turn to do the weekly staff bracket. This is not an ultimate projection of what the bracket will be (as that is the expertise of our colleague Jon Teitel), but rather a checkpoint of where we stand through games of Sunday the 15th of December. And here is the bracket:

First Four Out: Xavier, Utah State, LSU, Seton Hall

COMMENTS FROM JOHN

– Once again, there is no clear cut team for the #1 overall slot. I was set to put Ohio State in that spot after what they did to Cincinnati, Villanova, North Carolina and Penn State. Losing at Minnesota stings, but it’s very odd that home teams are a perfect 13-0 in the B1G so far this season.

– Gonzaga is once again looking like a team that will be seeded #1 in the West Region. The Bulldogs have beaten two of the top teams in the Pac-12 all on the road and also beat Oregon down in Atlantis last month. If they finish noncon play without any further slipups, there’s a very good chance of Gonzaga running the table the remainder of the season.

– Memphis is also showing that they can win games of significance without James Wiseman. Winning at Tennessee is not only good for the profile, it’s a big boost for the fanbase that hasn’t had a team this solid since the days of Calipari (even if the NCAA insists on a “Vacant” entry or two in the record books.

– There is a team from the Keystone State that is a protected seed this week not named Villanova. Penn State has shown that they can win games of significance both home and away, and beating Maryland had to be a feather in their cap. The Nittany Lions are now ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since the 1990s.

– Northern Iowa is a team that can potentially get above the First Four later on in the season. Their best wins are against South Carolina down in Cancun and at Colorado. Their only loss is against West Virginia, and it’s possible they could have an at-large case depending on whether or not they’re able to win the regular season crown in the Missouri Valley.

COMMENTS FROM THE STAFF

FROM DAVID -I agree that it is tough to pick the overall #1, but I also think that Stalica got it right in Kansas.  A rarity!  He did something right!  Kansas played Duke in their first game and turned it over about once a minute, which is bad.  But, they still nearly won the game despite not playing well, and they haven’t lost since.  They also have a really nice win against Dayton (more on them in a second), and a profile that looks pretty good.

I’m also really impressed with what Gonzaga has done, and agree that they should be on the #1 line.  I could see putting them even a little higher up than 4th on the seedlist.

I like Dayton a lot more than Stalica.  I know that their profile shows no wins over ranked teams, so if you’re going strictly off of merit one could argue that the #5 line is where they belong.  But, this is a team that’s only loss to Kansas is in overtime, and that has blown everyone else they have played off of the floor.  I think they are easily one of the best 15 teams in the country, and perhaps even one of the 10 best teams in the country.  I’d have them as a protected seed.

Rutgers makes the field!!  An argument can definitely be made.  I’d like to see them win at least one game away from home, though.

I like Penn State, but not THAT much!!!  Sheesh Stalica!!

Something I don’t understand.  Butler has one loss, by one point, at Baylor, who Stalica has up on the #2 line.  He has Butler down on the #5 line.  How does a team that loses by just a point on the road, IN THEIR ONLY LOSS, MIND YOU!, end up seeded three lines below the team that barely beat them?

Kent State (8-1, 6-1 D1) vs. UC-Irvine (6-5, 4-5 D1) – 4:00 PM EST

Today’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to El Paso, Texas for the first game of the Sun Bowl Invitational hosted by UTEP. This is NOT an exempt event, but it does count as a pair of games for both teams. Kent State comes into today’s game with 6 D1 wins, two of which came away from home. They have beaten Towson and Wright State and were competitive with Ohio State for 30 minutes before eventually losing that game. Javlin Walker has averaged over 21 points a game through the first 9 games for the Golden Flashes.

UC-Irvine began their season with their first seven games of the season against D1 competition all being played on the road. They went 3-4 in those games that included road wins against San Diego and Boise State and a win against Louisiana in the undercard portion of the MGM Event Classic in Las Vegas. The Anteaters have already played one team from the MAC – they were victorious against Eastern Michigan two weeks ago and handed the Eagles their first loss of the season. Collin Welp has averaged 14.2 points a game and 6.5 rebounds a game thus far for Irvine.

The Hoops HD Report: December 15th

Chad and the panel look back at a very busy weekend of college basketball that saw Oregon pick up a big road win at Michigan (who’s now lost three straight), Memphis pull off a big win at Tennessee, BYU pick up three big wins that they really needed, North Carolina continue to struggle, and a big win for Rutgers against Seton Hall.  It was also a crazy week in the Big Ten with some big upsets, but with the home team winning in all 13 conference games.  We run through all of major conferences, review all of last week’s action, and look ahead to what is another busy week.

Still Hanging with the Hoyas: Part 3

HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel will spend the upcoming months covering several Georgetown basketball home games, with a very special reward coming in March. You can find Parts 1&2 at:

https://hoopshd.com/2019/11/20/still-hanging-with-the-hoyas-part-2

He continues his series with Part 3 featuring the Hoyas’ matchup yesterday against Syracuse:

The best way to follow up an annual checkup with the doctor on Friday…is a pregame meal on Saturday catered by Rockland’s BBQ: chicken/pork/beans/mac and cheese (there might have been a 2nd helping)! 1 look at the media seating chart made me realize that this must be a big game because they pushed me off the baseline and into the corner:

I also bumped into Evan Chvotkin, son of Georgetown radio legend Rich and a Network Engineer for Monumental Sports & Entertainment. I met him last month when we were both at the Wooden Legacy in Anaheim: if you ever have a computer issue then he is the guy to talk to. Unlike my 1st 2 Hoya games last month against Central Arkansas/Georgia State, this 1 features a LOT of students/orange in the house. It is nice to see a big crowd show up for a nationally televised game with Gus Johnson on the mike for Fox:

Let’s tip things off:

It is always fun to see Jim Boeheim and Patrick Ewing face each other as coaches after they squared off in the old Big East as coach vs. player for these same teams almost 40 years ago:

Georgetown G Jagan Mosely entered the game shooting better than 58% from behind the arc. After nailing all 3 of his long-range attempts he was up to 67%, which placed him among the best 3-PT shooters in the nation. Syracuse F Elijah Hughes played all 20 minutes in the 1st half and kept his team in the hunt with 18 PTS/7-11 FG, equaling Mosely with a trio of his own trifectas as well as many mid-range jump shots:

His fellow frontcourt player Marek Dolezaj dominated the paint with 5-6 FG thanks to layup after layup but it was the defensive end of the court where he was involved in a game-changing play. His team was trailing 27-23 when Dolezaj was whistled for a blocking foul with about 8 minutes left after getting bowled over by Mac McClung. The Orange bench then got hit with a technical foul, McClung made 3 straight FTs, and after draining a 3 at the halftime buzzer McClung had given his team a 48-36 lead as the crowd erupted.  The reigning Big East Player of the Week is so hot at the moment that even when I tried to take a pregame photo of him it almost burnt a hole in my lens:

During halftime I wandered downstairs and ran into my fellow Penn alum Peter Biche: I tried to get an injury update on John Wall out of him…but you do not become the CFO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment by spreading gossip! Andy Katz is today’s sideline reporter for Fox, as well as a college friend of my brother-in-law, so it was nice to see him again after bumping into him last March at the Sweet 16 in DC:

With all due respect to the elder Boeheim the star of the 2nd half was his son. After scoring a career-high 26 PTS in a win at Georgia Tech the previous weekend, Buddy went ice-cold in the 1st half by missing all 5 of his shots. He would foul out with 28 seconds left vs. the Hoyas but not before making a ridiculous 7-10 3PM en route to a 25-PT 2nd half: it was 1 of the most remarkable performances that I have ever seen in person.

Georgetown 7-footer Omer Yurtseven also had a bad 1st half with 3 PTS/4 TO but similarly flipped the switch in the 2nd stanza with a bunch of jumpers/dunks to finish the game with a near-double-double of 19 PTS/9 REB:

Usually the best sighting I have in the crowd is a former Georgetown player returning to DC to watch his alma mater.  However, we had some baseball royalty yesterday as Max Scherzer was sitting courtside with his wife: when the PA announcer mentioned that the World Series champ was present he got a HUGE ovation from the crowd. I expected the Scherzers to leave a little early but they stayed until the very end, which thankfully allowed me to get a photo of the happy couple late in the 2nd half:

The Hoyas had a 16-5 advantage in 2nd chance PTS thanks in large part to a 41-29 REB advantage but the biggest key to their 89-79 win was at the FT line. Syracuse only had 9 FT attempts while Georgetown had not 1 but TWO different players with double-digit FTA of their own: Terrell Allen (11 FTA vs. the Orange after only attempting 11 total in his 1st 9 games this year) and McClung (who made 9-10 to push his season average to 92.7 FT%, which puts him in great company with some of the best FT shooters in NCAA history such as JJ Redick/Jerome Randle/all-time record-holder Blake Ahearn):

It was obvious that this win meant a lot to Coach Ewing after having 4 players leave the team during the past few weeks.  He ran off the court while high-fiving everyone in sight:

At the postgame press conference I asked Coach Boeheim where his son’s dual 20-minute performances ranked in family history. He agreed that Buddy’s 1st half 0-for-5 ranked at the bottom and stated that his 2nd half effort was ALMOST as good as 1 of his own…”but not quite!”:

I inquired whether Coach Ewing felt that the fans were crucial to his team’s success. He stated that his team needs the Hoya faithful to come out and give their vocal support. He gave props to the great crowd they had in NYC last month for the 2K Empire Classic at MSG and hoped that they kept showing up in DC because his team really feeds off of their energy:

That’s all for now, check back in the weeks ahead for Part 4.

Georgia Southern (6-3, 4-3 D1) at Bradley (7-3, 6-3 D1) – 5:00 PM EST (ESPN3)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Peoria, Illinois for a matchup between the Eagles of Georgia Southern and the Bradley Braves. Bradley finished 3rd in the Rocket Mortgage Tip-Off with a loss against Northwestern and a win against Kansas State back in November down in Fort Myers, Florida. The Braves are a perfect 6-0 at home, although this is their biggest home test of the year with their best win being against perennial Big South favorite Radford. Elijah Childs leads Radford with 15.0 points a game and 9.4 rebounds a game.

Georgia Southern has a slightly bloated record with 2 non-D1 wins, although they have managed a couple of D1 wins away from home – a neutral-court win against Campbell and a road win against Florida Gulf Coast that both game in the FGCU Classic sponsored by Hilton Garden Inn. They did have a missed opportunity at the beginning of the season to get a win at Auburn, but instead ended up with a 9-point loss. Both Ike Smith and Elijah McCadden average just under 16 points a game for the Eagles.

(Special note – we will be recording our weekly Hoops HD Report podcast tonight instead of our usual Monday night – be on the lookout for that later tonight)

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Sunday, Dec 15th

NEWS AND NOTES

Tons of thrilling games yesterday!

-Oregon needed overtime, but they did pick up a huge road win against a Michigan team that struggled in the first half, fought back in the second half to force overtime and had a shot to win the game in the final seconds, but just couldn’t get it done.  Michigan has had a rough week with three straight losses.

-Gonzaga also picked up a monster road win, and is once again looking like a top five caliber team.  They went into Arizona, and although the final score was close, they led for double digits for most of the second half and you never really felt like they were in any danger of losing the game.

-Memphis and Tennessee played each other in a rock fight of a game, which was a little surprising considering the offensive weapons that both teams have.  Memphis picked up a huge road win that’s got to feel good both on and off paper, especially when you consider that Memphis is still without one of their best players.  The Tigers are definitely a force to be reckoned with.

-Rutgers seemed like they were up by 20 at the tip.  They just blew Seton Hall off the floor.  Seton Hall was without Myles Powell for the second half, but by then the game was pretty much over anyway.  At 8-3 with a blowout win over a good Seton Hall team on their resume, it is time to put Rutgers squarely on the radar.  Along with DePaul.  WHAT THE HELL WORLD ARE WE LIVING IN!!??

-Xavier played sluggishly again yesterday, at least by top 25 standards.  They trailed Wake Forest for most of the game, and while they did fight back and give themselves a chance to win it, they came up short.  Xavier has yet to look anywhere close to as good as their ranking, and although they have a respectable 9-2 record, they haven’t beaten anyone that you could say looks like a solid NIT team, much less an NCAA team.

-Mississippi State picked up a big neutral floor win against Kansas State, which gives their resume some much needed help.

-Georgetown has lost scholarship players in the last couple of weeks, but somehow continues to win games.  They didn’t blow Syracuse off the floor yesterday, but they did pretty much control the entire game and held on to beat their old Classic Big East rivals.

-Arkansas blew out a Tulsa team that entered the game with an 8-2 record.  Arkansas hasn’t played the toughest of schedules, but they’ve looked good enough to where they are worth paying attention to.

-After praising Buffalo for their road win at DePaul, and saying they were looking like a solid team again, the Bulls were blown out by a rather mediocre Army team yesterday.  When I say mediocre, I mean by Patriot League standards.  Not the best showing for the Bulls.

-Alabama is just 4-5, but they are playing much better now than they were about a month ago.  They didn’t get the win against a really good Penn State team, but they were right in there.  If they keep improving they’ll pick up some notable wins in SEC play, and perhaps play their way into the picture.

-Wichita State knocked off Oklahoma to improve to 9-1 on the year.  I really like this Shockers team, and although they’re not getting a lot of love from the national media just yet, I think that they will crack the rankings sooner or later.

-New Mexico improved to 10-2 on the season with a win over their arch rivals New Mexico State.  They don’t really have any quality wins over solid NCAA Tournament caliber teams yet, but they will get a few chances before the end.

-Liberty picked up a nice road win against Vanderbilt.  Liberty is both good and unbeaten, but their schedule so far has been really weak.  Truth be told, I didn’t think they’d have as much trouble with Vandy as they did.  But, they did get the win.

-Stephen F Austin didn’t put UL Monroe away until the final couple of minutes.  For a while it looked like they were going to lose this one at home, which would have pretty much offset the big win against Duke in the eyes of the selection committee.

-BYU needed to have a big week, and they absolutely did.  They knocked off Utah State yesterday, and this followed up wins against Nevada and UNLV.  Suddenly BYU’s resume (and team) are looking really good.

-Last, and DEFINITELY least, is Cincinnati’s loss to Colgate.  We’ve felt all year that Colgate was a likely Patriot League frontrunner, and that Cincinnati has been less than impressive all season long, so the idea that Colgate would go in there and beat them isn’t all that astounding.  What Cincinnati did after Colgate tied the game IS astounding!!  It is utterly stupidly astounding.  I am not a good enough wordsmith to explain just how mind-numbingly stupefying it was, so I’ll just post the video HERE

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-NC STATE AT UNC GREENSBORO.  This is actually a really tough road test for NC State, and a chance for UNCG to pick up another notable win and take a big step toward landing inside the bubble.  UNCG already has the win at Georgetown and probably actually looks a little better than NC State right now.

-OKLAHOMA STATE AT HOUSTON.  Both of these teams have respectable records, but both need to add a lot of meat to their resumes.  Houston, despite being 6-2, still hasn’t played up to what I think their ceiling can be.  It’s early, but this game still has a bit of a pivotal feel to it for both teams.

-PURDUE AT NEBRASKA (Big Ten).  Purdue has been playing really well lately, and this looks like a very winnable conference road game for the Boilers.

-SOUTH CAROLINA AT CLEMSON.  This is a rivalry game, and both teams do have potential, but neither have really shown it yet.  Both have a lot of work to do before now and the end of they want to end up inside the bubble.

-OHIO STATE AT MINNESOTA (Big Ten).  Ohio State has answered the bell every time they have taken the floor, and look to be getting better as the season progresses.  If they can win this one there is a good chance they’ll be ranked #1 tomorrow.

-MISSOURI STATE AT VCU.  Missouri State is good enough to make some noise in the Missouri Valley, but probably not good enough to beat a very good VCU team on the road.
