NEWS AND NOTES

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day between Saint Francis U and Sacred Heart – CLICK HERE

-Villanova and Butler started off with a rain delay.  The roof was leaking, and the game had to be stopped within the first few minutes.  When it resumed, it did not disappoint,  It was close all throughout, and after Nova hit a three in the final seconds to tie the game, Butler hit a three at the final buzzer to win the game.  It was a big win for the Bulldogs who had gone through a patch of losing four out of six and who needed to shift the momentum back their way.

-Seton Hall bounced back from their home loss to Xavier over the weekend with a nice win at Georgetown.  They are still in the Big East driver’s seat.

-Iowa showed up at Purdue (sort of), and got blown out of the arena.  The game was basically over before the first media timeout, and it just kept getting worse.  Purdue looks awful at times, but on the nights that they eat their spinach they look like they can beat anybody.  The final score was 104-68.

-LSU fell at Vanderbilt.  Vandy had lost 26 straight SEC games, so to say that this was a surprise is an understatement.  As Joby Fortson put it, you don’t often see an 0-8 team beat an 8-0 team in conference play.

-Creighton fell on the road to a Providence team that continues to play like an NCAA Tournament caliber team, but that doesn’t have the overall resume to get them there due to a slow start to the season.  The Friars actually really blew this one open in the final minutes of the game to win it going away.

-Duquesne won decisively at Saint Louis.  This will probably be the last time we mention SLU for a while.

-Minnesota blew out Wisconsin at home.  There are home court heroes, and then there is Minney.  They are so good at home, but so bad everywhere else.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-UCONN AT TULSA (American).  Tulsa is the first place team despite having a really bad OOC slate, and although they are not yet inside our bubble they are certainly heading in that direction and have another winnable game at home tonight.

-CINCINNATI AT WICHITA STATE (American).  Cincinnati has done a lot of work over the last couple of weeks, but they still have a lot of work to do.  I think they are in a position to where a win tonight puts them at least on the bubble, and maybe even inside of it.  They’ve won six of their last seven, and beating a ranked team on the road would help boost their resume.  Wichita State has taken a bit of a step back, and a win tonight gets them back on the right track.

-CALIFORNIA AT COLORADO (Pac 12).  To be fair to Cal, they are much better than they were a year ago, and they have managed some nice wins.  But, they are still nowhere close to an NCAA Tournament caliber team.  This is the kind of game that Colorado is expected to win at home.

-USC AT ARIZONA (Pac 12).  Arizona helped themselves out last week with two big road wins, and faces a USC team tonight that’s trying to play their way safely inside the bubble.  If the Trojans can pull off a win like this, it will be the headliner on their resume.

-TULANE AT HOUSTON (American).  Houston is coming off a loss to Cincinnati, but is still in reasonably good shape and will remain that way so long as they can hold serve at home in games like this.

-STANFORD AT UTAH (Pac 12).  Stanford is still hanging around the area of being inside the bubble, but not entirely safe.  A road win like this would help, and a loss would probably actually hurt since Utah really isn’t anywhere near the bubble.

-BYU AT PORTLAND (West Coast).  This is a winnable road game for a BYU team that appears to be inside the bubble and is trying to stay there.

-LMU AT GONZAGA (West Coast).  Gonzaga continues to blow through the WCC, and that isn’t likely to change tonight.

-SAINT MARY’S AT SAN DIEGO (West Coast).  It’s a road game, but it’s the kind of game that tournament caliber teams are expected to win, so SMC needs should be able to hold serve.

-UCLA AT ARIZONA STATE (Pac 12).  UCLA has been playing better, so the Sun Devils don’t want to just overlook them.  They’re outside the bubble, which means any home loss to a non-tournament team could be crushing.

-A couple of good UTR games tonight worth mentioning are William & Mary at Charleston, which has first place implications in the Colonial (which has been a really fun league to watch this year), and Murray State who goes to Belmont, which should be one of their toughest games of conference play so far.

NEWS AND NOTES

-It seemed as though every game last night was great.

-Rutgers played great defense against Maryland and had a lead throughout most of the first half, but missed several opportunities to widen it and get control of the game.  It once again came down to the final minute, but once again Rutgers came up just short of picking up a road win against a highly ranked first ballot team.  Maryland improves to 18-4 and adds another notable win to their resume.

-Auburn, for the second straight week, went on the road, overcame a second half deficit in front of a very hostile crowd, and picked up an overtime win.  I know they just beat Kentucky at home, but getting the win at Arkansas on the road is probably their singular most impressive win to date.

-Penn State went on the road to Michigan State and picked up another monster ‘upset’ road win.  You have to start thinking of Penn State as a protected seed now, seeing as how they’re beating ranked teams on the road, and doing it in a conference where seemingly no one else can win on the road.

-Ohio State got a big road win against Michigan in a game that was close all throughout.  I don’t recall either team ever having what would be described as a “comfortable lead.”  Ohio State has pulled themselves out of whatever tailspin they were in and is back on the right track.  I don’t think it’s time for Michigan to panic yet, but they are far from being able to sleepwalk.  This game, by the way, was MUCH better than what the last several football games have been!

-Virginia Tech started the season off strong, kept going strong, and is now going down.  They were blown out by Georgia Tech last night, which will most definitely knock them outside of our bubble when we do our next staff bracket tomorrow.

-There aren’t many teams that have had a better four day stretch than Xavier.  Less than a week ago, they were NIT-ish at best.  But on Saturday they went on the road and won decisively at Seton Hall, which is one of the better true road wins that any team has managed all season, and last night they followed it up with another decisive win at DePaul.  Xavier is now all of a sudden looking like a solid tournament team, and you wonder how they were able to jack up their quality of play like the flip of a switch.

-Rhode Island got a little bit of a scare from UMass, but held on to win

-Duke trailed Boston College for most of the game, but came back to win at the end

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-VILLANOVA AT BUTLER (Big East).  Like a lot of Big East games, this is a resume building opportunity for two teams that look to be first ballot caliber teams, and who both could end up as protected seeds.  Butler has lost four of their last six and is in a bit of a slump, but they’ll jump right out of it if they can win tonight.

-IOWA STATE AT WEST VIRGINIA (Big 12).  West Virginia looks like a protected seed and Iowa State looks like they could make it to the NIT.  Maybe.  The Mountaineers just need to hold serve tonight.

-IOWA AT PURDUE (Big Ten).  Iowa has a good resume, but it will improve a ton if they can pick up a road win in a game like this.  Purdue is still hovering around the bubble despite just being 12-10, and at times they look fantastic, but on other nights they barely look like an NIT team.  Every game has a pivotal feel for them, and tonight is no different.

-CREIGHTON AT PROVIDENCE (Big East).  Creighton has really been playing well lately, but they have another tough test tonight against a Providence team that’s coming off a big win against Butler and who is really tough to beat.

-DUQUESNE AT SAINT LOUIS (Atlantic Ten).  SLU is outside the bubble, but if they can finish really strong they should end up getting the attention of the committee.

-CLEMSON AT VIRGINIA (ACC).  Virginia has been playing much better and has another winnable game tonight.  They appear to be playing at the level they need to in order to make the NCAA Tournament.

-GEORGIA AT FLORIDA (SEC).  Florida continues to hover around the bubble and needs to hold serve in games like this in order to remain on the right side of it.

-SOUTH CAROLINA AT OLE MISS (SEC).  South Carolina is probably still off of most peoples’ radars, but look out for Angry Frank’s Gamecocks!  They’ve won five out of six, including wins against Kentucky and at Arkansas, and their next four games are winnable.  If they pick up all of those they’ll be 9-3 in conference and 16-8 overall with some notable wins on their resume.  That’s bubblish, if not better.

-EAST TENNESSEE STATE AT CHATTANOOGA (SoCon).  I think the committee should select ETSU if they win out through the regular season even if they don’t win the SoCon Tournament.  The problem is that I’m not sure that they will.  Tonight is another game that is harder to win than what it looks like, but that a tournament caliber team should win.  Chattanooga has just two home losses and they should be way up for this one.

-MERCER AT FURMAN (SoCon).  If Furman wins out, then they should at least get a look from the committee.

-NICHOLLS AT STEPHEN F AUSTIN (Southland).  These are two of the better teams in the Southland, and both have shown that they can play against big teams with SFA winning at Duke and Nicholls knocking off Pitt and nearly beating Illinois.  I say this every week, but SFA should get a look from the committee if they win out, but lose in the conference tournament.

-TCU AT OKLAHOMA STATE (Big 12).  If TCU is going to make any sort of run at making the field, then they have to start stringing together wins.  They have a winnable road game tonight, which would be just their second of the year.

-TEMPLE AT MEMPHIS (American).  Memphis is right on the bubble and has been struggling to beat NIT teams in the last couple of weeks.  They can’t afford to lose at home to non-tournament level teams.

-NORTHERN IOWA AT VALPARAISO (Mountain West).  I think Northern Iowa is good enough to win out, and if they do they should be inside the bubble even if they don’t win the conference tournament.

-SETON HALL AT GEORGETOWN (Big East).  Seton Hall is coming off a loss and is dealing with some injuries, but they are still having a fantastic season and still look to be in the drivers seat in the Big East.  Georgetown’s tournament hopes are hanging by a thread.  They need a win tonight to help keep them alive.

-NC STATE AT MIAMI FL (ACC).  NC State is squarely on the bubble, and after three straight losses needs a road win like this to help keep the bubble within reach.

-WAKE FOREST AT LOUISVILLE (ACC).  Louisville continues to play like one of the best teams in the country, and actually has as hot at winning the ACC.  They also have a shot at potentially ending up on the #1 line if they keep winning like they have been.

-LSU AT VANDERBILT (SEC).  This is a winnable road game for the Tigers, which would keep them unbeaten in SEC play and on pace to contend for a protected seed.

-WISCONSIN AT MINNESOTA (Big Ten).  Wisky is inside our bubble but could use some more wins like this to help stabilize their resume.  Minney is outside the bubble and needs some wins like this to get on the right side of it.  Oh yeah, and this is a rivalry game.

-UNLV AT UTAH STATE (Mountain West).  Utah State could still end up around the bubble and get the committee to give them a serious look, but they basically need to win out all the way until the MWC final in order for that to happen.

-Chalky night last night with Baylor, Kansas, and Florida State all winning.

-Maryland Eastern Shore’s Centenary Award chances to a major hit yesterday with them winning on the road at Delaware State.  This could knock them out of the race entirely.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-DUKE AT BOSTON COLLEGE (ACC).  Duke still has a path to the #1 line, but they can’t afford to drop any more games to sub-tournament caliber teams if they want to end up as a 1 seed.

-RUTGERS AT MARYLAND (Big Ten).  Rutgers desperately needs a couple of road wins, and if they can get one today it will tremendously improve their resume, but winning at Maryland is a very tall order.  The Terps are in contention for a protected seed, and need to hold serve in games like this in order to keep that within reach.

-AUBURN AT ARKANSAS (SEC).  Auburn is coming off a big win against Kentucky and has another very tough test tonight on the road against an Arkansas team that appears to be inside the bubble.  This is a win that both teams could use and that would look good on both resumes.

-UMASS AT RHODE ISLAND (Atlantic Ten).  I think Rhody will make the NCAA Tournament if they can continue to hold serve.

-OHIO STATE AT MICHIGAN (Big Ten).  It’s a rivalry game between two teams that look to be NCAA Tournament caliber teams.  It’s also a win that would really help out both teams.  Ohio State could use a road win, and Michigan can use it as a big bounce back win from a recent slump they were in.

-TENNESSEE AT ALABAMA (SEC).  Alabama is still within reach of the bubble, but they absolutely need to hold serve in games like this in order to get inside of it.

-VIRGINIA TECH AT GEORGIA TECH (ACC).  VA Tech has been in a bit of a tailspin, and really needs to get this win on the road.  If they don’t then they will probably be outside of the field when we do our next projections.

-PENN STATE AT MICHIGAN STATE (Big Ten).  Both teams are in the rankings.  Michigan State looks like a solid protected seed, and Penn State appears to be within reach of one, especially if they can pick up a road win like this one tonight.

-MISSISSIPPI STATE AT KENTUCKY (SEC).  Mississippi State has been playing much better, but playing on the road at Kentucky may be swinging over their heads.  If they were to get a win like this it would boost the value of their resume through the roof.  Kentucky looks like a solid protected seed and although they are coming off of a loss they are still a very dangerous team.

-XAVIER AT DEPAUL (Big East).  Xavier’s win at Seton Hall completely changed the complexion of their resume.  If they get another road win tonight then you have to start thinking of them as a team that’s inside the bubble.  DePaul was tough out of conference, and has played well in a few games in conference, but with so few league wins the NCAA Tournament may be out of reach.

-OKLAHOMA AT TEXAS TECH (Big 12).  Oklahoma has been struggling and is squarely on the bubble.  A win like this would help them out a ton.  Texas Tech has had their struggles, but has been playing a lot better in the last couple of weeks and should be able to hold serve at home in this one.
