Championship Week Video Notebook: Saturday, March 5th

-The opening rounds of what we call the Under the Radar leagues may not be the most interesting games to most hoops fans, but they are elimination games where both teams are fighting to extend their seasons, and we pretty much had multiple exciting games going on at all times all day long.  All four Missouri Valley games were competitive, we had an overtime thriller in the Ohio Valley with Austin Peay upsetting Belmont, both opening round games in the Colonial were exciting, and the SoCon gave us two pretty good games as well.

We recap all of the action, and preview all of tomorrow’s games in what should be a great day with the Colonial quarterfinals, the Missouri Valley semifinals, and the Ohio Valley Championship game.

We also update our Hoops HD Survival Board, and begin what will be a daily correspondence with the chairman of the selection committee!

And for all you radio lovers, there is an mp3 version of the show at the bottom of the page…

Under the Radar Game of the Day – Friday, March 4: Kent State at Akron

Under the Radar Game of the Day: Kent State at Akron, 7:00 PM Eastern, ESPN2

For our latest Bracket Rundown podcast, CLICK HERE.

For our latest Championship Week Video Notebook, CLICK HERE.

Today is the final day of regular season action in the Mid-American Conference and features the second of two matchups this season between what may be the conference’s top two rivals, Kent State and Akron.  This rivalry is the battle for the Wagon Wheel and this year marks the 100th anniversary of the first time these two teams met on the hardwood.  In 144 contests between the schools, Kent State has only a very narrow 73-71 all-time lead.  For the Akron Zips tonight, a home win would be a feather in their caps against their top rivals as they prepare for next week’s conference tournament.  Akron has already clinched the #1 seed with a 12-5 conference record and 23-7 overall mark.  The Zips are led by Antino Jackson and Isaiah Johnson.  Jackson scored 14 points and Johnson led the teams with 24 in an earlier 85-76 loss at Kent.

Kent State enters play tonight with a record of 19-11 overall and 10-5 in conference.  The Golden Flashes are in a four way tie for the second best record in the conference with Ohio University, Ball State and Central Michigan, plus Buffalo is only a game behind at 9-8.  Only three of these teams can earn byes into the quarterfinals and avoid having to host a first round game on Monday night, so a win today by Kent State would be huge for their seeding in the MAC tournament.  Kent State is led by junior Jimmy Hall.  Hall is a double-double threat every time he takes the court and is coming off of a 22 point, 9 rebound game last time out against Bowling Green.  If Akron is unable to contain him, Kent State certainly has the tools to pull off the road upset and earn themselves one of the top four seeds next week.

OTHER GAMES OF NOTE

-YALE AT CORNELL (Ivy). Yale currently holds a half-game lead over Princeton in the Ivy League as of today. Columbia is a tougher game to win, but the Bulldogs cannot afford to be caught looking ahead tonight. A win and a Princeton loss would clinch at least a share of the Ivy League crown tonight.

-PRINCETON AT HARVARD (Ivy). Harvard still can play spoiler here, but this should be the toughest road game of Princeton’s annual Harvard-Dartmouth roadie here.

-BROWN AT COLUMBIA (Ivy, Survival Board). The light is still on in Columbia’s house, but anything less than a win tonight and a Yale loss would eliminate the Lions from a share of the Ivy League title and the vaunted 3-Game Playoff. Princeton needs to lose 2 out of their last 3 for Columbia to remain alive.

-TEXAS AT OKLAHOMA STATE (Big 12). This is a rare Friday night lights game for the Big 12 on ESPN2; Texas needs a road win to maintain any hopes of getting a protected seed and a potential trip to OKC for the NCAA Tournament. Even Kansas has been caught napping at Gallagher-Iba Arena, so Longhorns beware!

Thursday was another exciting day of conference tournament action.  All four quarterfinal games in the Patriot were thrilling as Army advanced to the semifinals where they will actually host a game, and the first place team Bucknell was eliminated in a huge upset loss at home to Holy Cross.

Craziness was also the theme in the Atlantic Sun as top seeded North Florida was blown out by Florida Gulf Coast, but can still win the automatic bid IF Stetson manages to beat Gulf Coast in the championship game.  Stetson, the #7 seed, has won two road games to advance to the finals, but since they’re ineligible, North Florida would go if Stetson were to win the tournament.

We also had two exciting games in the Ohio Valley, and three good games in the Big South, including a thrilling finish as Presbyterian hit a shot at the buzzer to beat Radford and win their first ever conference tournament game.

Things also got underway in the Missouri Valley and Metro Atlantic, where we also had a couple of thrilling finishes.

Hoops HD Bracket Rundown: March 3rd

NOTE:  The show was recored on the evening of Thursday, March 3rd, but for the teams seeded #11th or better it only takes games into account that were played through March 2nd.  Specifically, Little Rock’s loss to Appalachian State, UConn’s loss to SMU, and Cincinnati’s loss to Houston were not considered

Six members of the Hoops HD staff submitted their seed lists to Chad Sherwood.  They were then tallied, up, averaged up, ranked, and then bracketed based on the rankings.  There is a Selection Sunday type feel to the show as they reveal the results of the bracket line by line, and the panel discusses each team as the bracket is being revealed.  The individuals talk about who they feel is overseeded, underseeded, and who they feel should have gotten in or who should have been left out.  They also discuss how good they feel each team is, and talk about which ones they wouldn’t want to face in March.

The staff is not attempting to guess the selection committee, but rather to show what they personally think the tournament should look like…

CLICK HERE to see the final bracket, and to look at Jon Teitel’s most recent bracket that attempts to guess the committee, but don’t do it until  you’ve watched the show first!!!

Our season finale of Throwback Thursday goes into the not-so-distant past of the 2011 season; what was then the Great West Conference consisted of North Dakota, South Dakota, UT-Pan American (now UT-Rio Grande Valley), Utah Valley State, Chicago State, Houston Baptist and NJIT. The tournament was played in Orem, Utah on the campus of Utah Valley State. We highlight this year not just because we at HoopsHD follow all Under-The-Radar programs, but that all 6 games were decided by a grand total of 11 points (including a double-overtime championship game). Utah Valley was the top seed in the Great West and would get the first-round bye. The first two rounds were broadcast on UVU-TV; the championship was aired on Fox College Sports.

The first matchup featured the second-seeded NJIT Highlanders and the seventh-seeded Houston Baptist Huskies. Undaunted by a 4-25 (2-10 Great West) record, the Huskies would trade leads with NJIT 12 different times during the course of the game. The game was tied 69-69 with under a minute to play; Michael Moss (who had a game-high 26 points) hit the go-ahead layup plus the and-1 to give Houston Baptist a 3-point lead with 2 seconds left to play. They immediately fouled NJIT before the Highlanders could attempt a game-tying 3; NJIT hit the first free throw before intentionally missing the 2nd shot. Jheryl Wilson got the rebound for NJIT but was unable to hit the shot that would have sent the game to overtime. Wilson led the Highlanders with 18 points; the Huskies would advance to play the North Dakota/UT-Pan American winner.

In the 3-6 matchup, #3 North Dakota would take on #6 UT-Pan American. North Dakota was able to overcome a 2nd half deficit of 7 points and took the lead for good after a basket by Troy Huff with 2:42 to play in the game. The Fighting Sioux (as UND was called back then) would extend the lead to 7 points with 1:10 to play, but a pair of late 3s by the Broncs whittled the lead down to 1 point with 7 seconds remaining in the game. After a pair of missed free throws by UND, the Broncs were unable to get off a shot on their final possession and UND would escape with a 71-70 victory. Patrick Mitchell and Troy Huff led the Fighting Sioux with 12 points apiece; Aaron Urbanus led the Broncs with 18 points in a losing effort. This set up a semifinal with North Dakota and Houston Baptist on the bottom half of the Great West bracket.

In the 4-5 nightcap, #4 South Dakota would face off against #5 Chicago State. Despite outrebounding South Dakota 52-35 and getting a 20/20 game (27 points, 21 rebounds) from senior Carl Montgomery, the Cougars were unable to pull off the upset and would lose 73-70 in overtime. Jake Thomas led the Coyotes with 20 points and 8 rebounds, and their reward was a semifinal matchup with the hometown UVU Wolverines the following day.

The first semifinal pitted North Dakota against Houston Baptist. The Huskies started off hot with a 17-6 lead, but the Fighting Sioux were able to slowly chip away en route to a 1-point deficit at halftime. Troy Huff looked like he had given North Dakota a cushion after hitting a pair of free throws to give UND a 3-point lead with 21 seconds remaining in regulation. However, Michael Moss would foul the Huskies’ Anthony Gonzalez while attempting a 3-point shot with 5 seconds to play. Gonzalez calmly hit all 3 free throws to tie the game. However, Lamar Thomas would commit a foul for Houston Baptist with under 2 seconds remaining on the clock; this time it was Patrick Mitchell’s turn to hit a pair of freebies to wrap up the game and give North Dakota a berth into the championship game. Huff led UND with 16 points and 5 rebounds; Andrew Gonzalez had 24 points to lead the Huskies.

In the second semifinal, the top-seeded Utah Valley Wolverines would face the South Dakota Coyotes. This was another back-and-forth game that was tied at 69-69 with 1:10 remaining in the 2nd half; Mitchell Bouie would hit a layup to put the Coyotes up for good. The Wolverines would cut the lead to 1 with a free throw; after a miss by the Coyotes’ Louie Krogman with 13 seconds remaining, Utah Valley was unable to get off a shot before committing a critical turnover with 5 seconds left in the game. South Dakota hit one more free throw to ice the game and set up a championship game with their neighbor North Dakota. Jake Thomas led the Coyotes with 21 points and 7 rebounds; Ben Aird had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Wolverines.

However, since the Great West Conference had not yet qualified for an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, both North Dakota and South Dakota were playing for a berth in the CIT Tournament on the Fox College Sports network. South Dakota led by as many as 10 points in the 1st half, but North Dakota would go on a run of their own and take a 48-42 lead following a Patrick Mitchell 3-pointer with 1:45 left in regulation. Undaunted, South Dakota would chip the lead down to 2 and hit what could have been an and-1 with 35 seconds remaining. Kendall Cutler was unable to hit the go-ahead free throw for the Coyotes and the game went into overtime. North Dakota had control for much of the first overtime (and led by as many as 8 points), but the Coyotes’ Louie Krogman hit a game-tying 3 at the buzzer that bounced multiple times before falling in and sent the game to a second overtime. This time, South Dakota was able to get a 4-pt lead with 15 seconds remaining in the 2nd OT. After a layup by Jamal Webb and a turnover by the Coyotes, Jake Thomas would hit a game-winning 3 to give North Dakota the title and a berth into the 2011 CIT that season. You can click here for highlights of the championship game.

However, the Great West was ultimately doomed to failure without the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. South Dakota would move to the Summit League for the 2011-12 season and North Dakota defected to the Big Sky for the 2012-13 season. Chicago State won the last-ever Great West Championship in 2013; Houston Baptist would join the Southland and UT-Pan American, Utah Valley and Chicago State all joined the WAC for the following year. NJIT would remain independent for 2 seasons before joining the Atlantic Sun in the 2015-16 season.

-Notre Dame was blown to pieces for the second straight game.  They lost badly, at home, to Miami FL.  On the flip side, it was probably Miami’s most impressive road win of the year, but Notre Dame has suddenly looked eye-gougingly bad in their last two games.

-Alabama fell at home to Arkansas, and is most likely outside the bubble, and will most likely remain there on Selection Sunday.  It’s disappointing, but let’s not forget just how little was expected of this Bama program this year, and that they also lost a key player so early in the season.  Avery Johnson has done a fantastic job, and although the NIT is not where they want to be, it’s still a good year for a program that is in rebuilding mode.  Unlike most programs that claim to be in rebuilding mode, Bama actually is building something.

-Pittsburgh followed up their impressive win against Duke over the weekend by being the exact opposite of impressive with their loss to Virginia Tech.  I know VA Tech is at least formidable at home, but it’s still the kind of game a tournament caliber team needs to win when…well…they need to win it.

-Bubblicious Saint Bonaventure picked up a nice home win against Saint Joseph’s, which is the second time they have beaten the Hawks this season.  Granted, it was a home game, but Joe’s has been strong on the road this year, so the Bonnies do deserve some credit for it.

-In Seton Hall’s last 11 games, they’ve won all of them that weren’t against Butler.  I think Both Butler and Seton Hall are relatively safe in regards to making the field, but last night was a nice win for the Bulldogs.

-Oregon State managed to close the gap toward the end of the game at USC last night to make the final score look a little better than what the actual game was.  Oregon State is a program that is definitely going in the right direction, and they probably will make the field, but they are not impressive when playing away from home.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-GEORGIA AT SOUTH CAROLINA (SEC).  South Carolina appears to be safely in the field, and should go in on the initial ballot so long as they hold serve the rest of the way.

-MEMPHIS AT TEMPLE (American).  Temple is right on the fringe of the bubble right now, and if they want to get a serious look and land on the right side of it then they can’t afford to lose a home game to a non-tournament team.

-ILLINOIS AT MARYLAND (Big Ten).  A win won’t really help Maryland out much.  The one thing they need on their resume is quality wins away from home.  Still, the Terps should end up as a protected seed.

-ARKANSAS LITTLE ROCK AT APPALACHIAN STATE (Sun Belt, Survival Board).  Little Rock has had a fantastic season, and they’ve almost gone the distance with, for the most part, avoiding bad losses in conference play.  They don’t want to slip up and fall on their face by losing a game to a team as bad as Appy State. A loss by Appy State also eliminates the Mountaineers from Sun Belt Tournament qualification.

-TROY AT TEXAS STATE (Sun Belt, Survival Board). A win by Texas State would move the Bobcats into an 8th place tie with Arkansas State for the 8th and final spot in the Sun Belt Tournament with 1 game left to play. This is important because TSU has a season sweep over the Red Wolves. A loss leaves Texas State on the brink of elimination.

-CONNECTICUT AT SMU (American).  UConn is relatively safe, but I wouldn’t consider them a lock just yet. But, if they win this game they likely will be.  It’d be one of their more impressive wins of the year.

-CINCINNATI AT HOUSTON (American).  Cincinnati is squarely on the bubble, and this is a hugely important game for them.  Houston is actually pretty good.  Their profile is kind of weak, but that’s largely due to their out of conference schedule.  They actually did themselves a disservice becasue they’re better than what their paper indicates.  This won’t be an easy game for Cincinnati to win, but it’s one that they really could use.

-SFA AT NORTHWESTERN STATE (Southland, Survival Board). SFA has two games remaining to go a perfect 18-0 in conference play. Northwestern State needs a win to avoid potentially falling below Nicholls State in the standings and potentially being eliminated from advancing to the Southland Conference tournament.

-SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA AT NEW ORLEANS (Southland, Survival Board). New Orleans also needs a win to avoid potentially falling into a tie with Nicholls State; a win all but wraps up a Southland Conference Tournament slot going into their regular season finale with Northwestern State.

-NICHOLLS STATE AT CENTRAL ARKANSAS (Southland, Survival Board). A win by New Orleans combined with a Nicholls loss would eliminate the Colonels from Southland Conference Tournament contention and lock in all 8 teams for the tournament.

-CALIFORNIA AT ARIZONA (Pac Twelve).  Both teams are safely in the field, and Cal’s profile has improved a ton since they’ve picked up some road wins.  It would improve a ton more if they manage to pick this one up against an Arizona team that has been good this year, but not nearly as good as many of us were expecting.

-STANFORD AT ARIZONA STATE (Pac Twelve).  I’m not big on Stanford, but they’re in a situation to where if they win their last two games against Arizona and Arizona State, then we would have to give them a serious look.
