Highlighted Games for Wednesday, Feb 6th

-UNITED STATES AT HONDURAS (CONCACAF). Okay, wrong sport, but it is still a big game, and if we can talk about it on the podcast, I can write about it. Much has been made about how this game is taking place in the most violent city in the world. That may be true, but it is one of the least violent stadiums to play in. It will be hostile, but not as hostile as the rest of CONCACAF, so if the USA doesn’t get at least a tie, they’re in trouble. Don’t Tread On Me!!!!

-BAYLOR AT OKLAHOMA STATE (Big Twelve). Oklahoma State has shot way inside the bubble with their win at Kansas. Baylor is still on it, if not outside of it, and could use a notable road win.

-CONNECTICUT AT SAINT JOHN’S (Big East). The Johnnies are a bubble team and every game has a pivotal feel to it.

-SOUTHERN MISS AT UCF (Conference USA). Southern Miss’s next top 100 win will be their first. They have a good record, but no quality wins, so this is a huge game for them. It would be their biggest statement win of the year by far.

-MINNESOTA AT MICHIGAN STATE (Big Ten). Michigan State is in better shape than Minnesota for the time being, but both are very solid teams and both could end up as protected seeds. That is important considering there are second/third round games in Auburn Hills.

-MARQUETTE AT SOUTH FLORIDA (Big East). Marquette is coming off a decisive loss at Louisville, but they’re still in good shape and can add another notable road win to their profile.

-SAINT BONAVENTURE AT BUTLER (Atlantic Ten). The top of the A10 is logjammed, and Butler is one of the players. They have great wins, but could use some more true road wins if they want a solid protected seed.

-CHARLOTTE AT TEMPLE (Atlantic Ten). This is a very pivotal game for both teams. Temple has quality wins, but they have some head scratching losses and are very schizophrenic in general. They seem to have fallen from safely in to right on the bubble. Charlotte is a bubble team with a good record, but lacks quality wins. So, both have a lot to gain and potentially a lot to lose in this one.

-CINCINNATI AT PROVIDENCE (Big East). Cincinnati is the better team with the better profile by far, but no road win is easy.

-CREIGHTON AT INDIANA STATE (Missouri Valley). Creighton appears to be safely in, but they are by no means a lock for a protected seed. Indiana State can play their way inside the bubble with a strong finish, and this is an opportunity for them to pick up a huge win of note.

-LOUISVILLE AT RUTGERS (Big East). The Cardinals may have blown their shot at a #1 seed, but they looked very good in their last game and appear to be back on track. Now they need to show up and look good in a true road game.

-ALABAMA AT AUBURN (SEC). If Alabama wants any shot at all they need a strong finish and cannot afford a loss in a game like this.

-SAINT LOUIS AT FORDHAM (Atlantic Ten). SLU has looked fantastic lately, and although they’re on the road they should have very little trouble winning this one.

-MEMPHIS AT SMU (Conference USA). It’s always the same story with Memphis. A great record, but no wins that are really notable up to this point. Therefore, the margin for error is small.

-MISSISSIPPI STATE AT OLE MISS (SEC). Ole Miss is having a great year, but they’ve hit a skid with two straight losses. Albeit both were to good teams, but they can’t afford to lose at home to teams that are nowhere close to the NIT like Mississippi State.

-KANSAS AT TCU (Big Twelve). Kansas is coming off of a loss, but they shouldn’t have too much trouble tonight.

-IOWA AT WISCONSIN (Big Ten). Iowa has looked good, but they still appear to be on the bubble and could use a huge win in a game like this.

-AIR FORCE AT NEW MEXICO (Mountain West). I’m not completely sold on Air Force, but I am getting there. They have looked good in conference and can really make a strong case for themselves with a win tonight.

-STANFORD AT ARIZONA (Pac Twelve). Stanford has played well at home lately, but will really be challenged tonight. Arizona still looks like a #2 or #3 seed caliber team.

-UNLV AT FRESNO STATE (Mountain West). Vegas could really use this win on the road.

-COLORADO STATE AT NEVADA (Mountain West). Colorado State has looked very strong lately, but they’ve done most of their damage at home. Nevada isn’t a tournament team, but they have given teams fits on their home court, so it’s an interesting test for the Rams tonight.

-WYOMIG AT CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD. An odd OOC road game for the Cowboys. It should end their losing skid, but it won’t do anything to help their profile.

-BOISE STATE AT SAN DIEGO STATE (Mountain West). There are some very good things on Boise’s profile, but not enough to sustain them if they don’t’ turn their slump around. Winning tonight would really help their cause.

Small Conference Game of the Day – February 6

Following last night’s 97-31 victory by Eastern Kentucky, the SCGD returns to more competitive action tonight as our focus shifts over to the Big South Conference.  Last season, UNC-Asheville took the conference tournament championship to advance to the NCAA tournament.  This year, the Big South has expanded to 12 teams and two divisions with the addition of Longwood.  The defending champions are half a game out of first place is the South Division, behind Charleston Southern.  While the Bulldogs host Winthrop tonight, it is the game involving the first place team that gets our attention.

The Buccaneers of Charleston Southern stand at 7-1, first place in their division, and have the best record in the conference.  They are 12-7 overall.  After starting the season losing 5 of their first 6 games, they have only lost twice, once at Wichita State, and the other time being upset last week by Gardner-Webb in overtime.  The Bucs are led by Saah Nimley who has scored 20 or more points in each of his last three games.

Tonight, the conference leaders try to rebound from their first loss of the season when they head out on the road to battle Coastal Carolina (7:00 PM Eastern).  The Chanticleers are 5-4 in conference and 10-10 overall, including wins over both Akron and Clemson.  However, they have had more than their share of bad losses, including Tennessee Tech, Liberty and Winthrop.  CCU has won 7 straight home games and is led by Anthony Raffa and Kierre Greenwood, who reached the 450 career assist mark last time out.

In terms of postseason implications, the Big South has been one of the weakest overall conferences all season, holding the second worst conference RPI among leagues with automatic bids.  Charleston Southern enters with an RPI of 184, while CCU has an RPI of 265.  Their KenPom ratings are not much better, sitting at 163 and 200 respectively.  What this most likely means is that, barring some crazy upsets during Championship Week, the Big South champion is destined for a trip to Dayton and a First Four matchup against another #16 seed.

Small Conference Game of the Day – February 5

The Battle of Chalk Bluff, May 1-2, 1863.  Union Brigadier General Vandever was repulsed in his attempt to prevent Confederate General Marmaduke from crossing the St. Francis River, though Marmaduke’s forces suffered considerable losses.  The battle was fought near the present day city of Paragould, Arkansas, at a geological formation known as Crowley’s Ridge.

Today, Crowley’s Ridge also gives its name to a tiny four year private college whose 2011 enrollment totaled 311 students.  Those students interested in playing basketball can fill out a simple signup form on the school’s web site (www.crc.edu).  The school is a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).  Through January 19 of this year, their men’s basketball team was 5-15 on the season.  Apparently, none of the 311 students at the school has bothered updating their website with the results of the four games they have played since then.*

Tonight, 7:00 PM Eastern, small Crowley’s Ridge College will send their Pioneers men’s basketball team on the road to Richmond, Kentucky to battle the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky out of the Ohio Valley Conference.  While on occasion a Division I school will face off against a Division 2 or 3 school, or even more rarely against an NAIA school, for a Division I team to play an NCCAA school is almost unheard of.  Almost.  This same Crowley’s Ridge team actually already played another OVC member, Tennessee Tech, back in November.  CRC lost 107-32.  Unfortunately, it is likely to be more of the same in tonight’s SCGD.

One more side note on CRC – they actually have only been a member of the NCCAA for about 4 years now.  Prior to that, they were in the Association of Christian College Athletics (ACCA), where they were actually the runner-up in the National Tournament in 2007.  If you want any further information about the team, feel free to check out their website.  The phone number and email address of Head Coach Chris Perkins is listed right on it.

*UPDATE: Through due diligence, it has been established they went 2-2 in those games, making their current overall record 7-17.

Bracket Racket Podcast, Feb 3rd

Lots of talk on the Indiana vs Michigan game, and the hugely important role it plays in determining which team will be the #1 seed in the Indianapolis Regional. Only one of the top Three Big Ten teams can be placed in Indianapolis. Other talking points were the Mountain West, and how the fact that no teams are breaking away from the pack could be detrimental to the seeds the teams earn.

Andy Glockner was this week’s guest.

All that, and much more….

Small Conference Game of the Day – February 4

Northwestern State stayed a game behind Stephen F. Austin and Oral Roberts in the Southland yesterday with their win over McNeese State.  We also saw the Baltimore Ravens win a game of mild importance.  With football finally behind us, the SCGD today turns its attention to a very special matchup in the Colonial Athletic Association.

At 7:00 PM Eastern tonight, UNC-Wilmington will be traveling to Towson, Maryland to take on the Towson Tigers.  The importance of this game:  it is a battle between the two members of the CAA that have been banned from postseason play this season due to their APR (Academic Progress Rate) scores.  Towson and UNC-Wilmington are two of nine teams that have been banned from postseason play due to APRs this season, with the most notable team being the UConn Huskies.

The other special note in this game has to do with last season’s performance by Towson.  As has been documented, Towson controversially won the “Centenary Award” last season with their 1-31 record.  Their one victory, of course, was a home win last January over none other than UNC-Wilmington.

As for this season, Towson has been one of the most surprising stories all year.  They are sitting at 11-12 heading into tonight’s game and 6-4 in the CAA.  UNC-Wilmington, on the other hand, is only 8-13 overall and 2-6 in conference.  Towson’s story would be all the better if they had a shot at picking up a bid to the Big Dance this season, but just finishing at or above .500 would be a huge accomplishment coming off their disastrous 2011-12 campaign.

Field of 68 – February 3

Here is my Field of 68, through games of February 3, broken down by conference.  Note that the winner of the conference is the team that I feel is the best team in the conference, which may at times not be the first place team.

First four out: Illinois, Baylor, Arizona State, Kentucky
Others considered: Virginia, Florida State, Maryland, Charlotte, UMass, St Joe’s, Richmond, Temple, St. John’s, Villanova, Northwestern, Wyoming, Washington, Stanford

A few notes about this week’s field:

The bubble just keeps getting bigger and bigger.  In the ACC, bubble teams Virginia, Florida State and Maryland continue to stumble, as did Villanova in the Big East.  The A-10 was also a complete mess this week with 9 times under consideration but only four making it into the field.

The Pac Twelve continues to look better and better this year as four teams made it into the field fairly easily and Arizona State almost made it five.  Washington and Stanford have both moved onto my radar as well and could play their way in.

In the SEC, Kentucky’s profile is starting to look better and I finally have them not only on my radar, but in fact as one of my first four teams out of the field.  However, Calipari’s team must continue winning if they want to make up for the lack of big wins as well as the overall weakness of the SEC.

Finally, the Mountain West had 7 of its 9 members on the board, with 6 of them finding a way in.  The big mover this week was Air Force, a team that just finds a way to keep winning games.  It wouldnt shock me to see the Falcons fall apart quickly, but if I had to pick a field right now, I would put them in.

Finally, here is my S-Curve of these 68 teams:

1. Indiana
