The end of the regular season means that it is time to recognize the best players/coaches in college basketball this season. HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel has reviewed all of the numbers and is ready to announce his picks for the 5 best players from each conference based on their all-around stats. Players are listed in a traditional 5-position lineup (G-G-F-F-C) whenever possible with several exceptions, plus special awards for each conference’s Player of the Year (POY), Rookie of the Year (ROY), Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY), 6th Man of the Year (6TH), and Coach of the Year (COY). Hoops HD BRACKET RUNDOWN: March 9th

This was recorded on Monday, March 9th at 9:30pm.  No games that went final after that, particularly the Gonzaga v San Francisco or the Saint Mary’s v BYU games, were considered

The Hoops HD panel each submitted a seedlist.  They were all compiled via a cross country ranking for a master seedlist, and those teams were then bracketed and the results are revealed line by line in a Selection Sunday type format.  They debate, discuss, and assess each team as they go in.  See who the #1 seeds are, who all the protected seeds are, who’s inside the bubble, and who just missed it.

All-Access at the CAA Tournament: HoopsHD is semi-impressed by the semifinals

Conference tournaments are about basketball but also so much more: the fans, bands, cheerleaders, etc. The CAA Tournament is taking place in Washington, DC this weekend and we could not be more excited to be there in person! HoopsHD will be covering all of the angles so you can look forward to a cascade of coverage in the days ahead. Jon Teitel continues our series with Monday’s semifinals:

After Asian night and BBQ night the past 2 evenings…tonight’s pregame meal was Italian: chicken parmesan/meatballs/noodles/breadsticks!  Let’s tip things off:

Game #1 (Delaware-Hofstra) was neck-and-neck through the 1st 10 minutes. Ryan Allen made a couple of layups and Justyn Mutts did a ton of damage in the lane including a reverse layup, REB/follow dunk, and an old-fashioned 3-PT play to keep the Dragons in the hunt. Eli Pemberton had a huge game on Sunday but was somehow even more lethal from long-range on Monday with 4 shots from behind the arc in the 1st half. His backcourt teammates Desure Buie/Jalen Ray each nailed a pair of threes to give the Pride a 40-28 halftime lead. Hofstra continued to pull away in the 2nd half via some help on the boards from their “big” men, as 6’7” Isaac Kante had 11 REB and 6’5” Tareq Coburn had 12 REB. The Pride opened up a 22-PT lead with 8 minutes to play and Delaware could have given up but they started full-court-pressing and forced several turnovers to keep it interesting. Coach Joe Mihalich was forced to call a timeout before the wheels came off the train:

Hofstra made some FTs down the stretch and ended up with a 75-61 win and a spot in the title game after losing that same game last March. In the postgame press conference I asked Coach Mihalich whether he preferred to play a Northeastern team who he swept this year by a combined 6 PTS or an Elon team who he swept by a combined 50 PTS(!). He answered that regardless of the opponent the tourney would have to be won by playing 3 tough games. He said that Elon is not the same team that they played earlier this year, and that while whatever his team did to sweep Northeastern worked, they will have to come up with some new ideas for Tuesday night:

I am sure that Game #2 (Northeastern-Elon) was fantastic but I have to be at work in the morning so I stuck around for tip-off to make sure it counted and then headed home: you can just read about it yourself in the morning. All-Access at the CAA Tournament: HoopsHD interviews Elon dancer Brielle Ricciardi

Conference tournaments are about basketball but also so much more: the fans, bands, cheerleaders, etc. The CAA Tournament is taking place in Washington, DC this weekend and we could not be more excited to be there in person! HoopsHD is all over it and covering all of the angles so you can look forward to a cascade of coverage in the days ahead. Jon Teitel continues our coverage by chatting with Elon dancer Brielle Ricciardi about her favorite moment this season and her team’s great run this week.

You grew up in New Jersey: what made you choose Elon? I wanted to be down South, I liked the size of the school, and they had a dance team. It was beautiful when I visited so I knew very quickly that I wanted to come here.

You are majoring in marketing: what would you like to do after graduation? I want to get a job doing marketing in either the sports or health/wellness industry: perhaps a company like CAA, Under Armour, or lululemon.

What was the atmosphere like on campus last week now that the postseason has arrived? Everyone is really excited…for the CAA women’s tournament that is taking place on campus this week.

How did you 1st get into dancing, and what is the best part of being on the dance team? I have been dancing since I was 3 years old both recreationally and competitively. I love being on this team because the girls are so close to each other. I can do what I love to do without having to major in dance and I enjoy cheering on our sports teams.

Will we see your group doing anything extra-special for the CAA Tournament this weekend? We have a halftime performance jazz dance which will be fun and we will also be doing sidelines/chants.

What do you think the role of a college dancer is today, and how has it changed over time? We are supposed to cheer on the team but we do a lot more than that. We compete at nationals, which is just for us, but we work really hard to be a D-1 sports team even though it is an art form.

How does your school decide who gets to go to DC, and what does it mean to you to see your group doing their thing in front of a national TV audience? Our school said that we can have 12 people on the floor as dancers and our coach decided who she wanted to bring based on performance/strength. My parents sent me photos that they took of me on TV, which has been fun.

What has been your favorite moment so far this season: playing at Michigan/UNC, beating Northeastern at home, Senior Night, other? Saturday night’s win over JMU was awesome. I loved seeing the comeback and dancing/cheering the whole time. The crowd was really into it!

The Phoenix started 6-17 before winning 5 of their next 6 in February: do you bring the same energy every single night or is it much easier to get up for a game when your team is on a winning streak? It is definitely nice when the team wins. We bring the same energy no matter what but morale is much higher when they win.

How exciting was the end of Saturday night’s win over JMU? I was nervous because we did not start out strong but then we were neck-and-neck for most of the 2nd half. When Hunter McIntosh fouled out it was scary because he is 1 of our best players but it was awesome to finish on a high note!
