Still Hanging with the Hoyas: Part 5

HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel will spend the upcoming months covering several Georgetown basketball home games, with a very special reward coming in March. You can find Parts 1-4 at:

He continues his series with Part 5 featuring the Hoyas’ matchup yesterday against American:

The pregame meal of deli sandwiches/potatoes was decent but the pastry selection for dessert was even nicer: cookie/brownie/croissant! I saw Len Elmore grabbing a beverage: the 6’10” FS1 color commentator is even taller in person than on TV. With all of the Georgetown students on winter break the fill-in for the band/cheerleaders was the Tech Prep Academy band/dance team, who performed very well:

The Hoyas entered today on a 5-game winning streak as they attempted to win 6 December games in a row for the 1st time in 8 years. Let’s tip things off:

Head coaches Patrick Ewing and Mike Brennan both have strong Georgetown ties so it is nice to see them both manning the sideline:

The scoring leader for American is SR Sa’eed Nelson, and he did not disappoint 1 bit. His signature move is to cut to the hoop/receive a pass/make a layup, but none was nicer than a circus-shot 2-handed layup flung over his head that somehow went in despite an apparent foul that was not called:

The scoring non-leader for Georgetown is SR George Muresan, son of Gheorghe (who remains the tallest player in NBA history. He had only 3 career PTS entering today’s game, but after getting fouled late in the half he swished a pair of FTs to everyone’s delight:

SR Omer Yurtseven continued his All-American caliber play, scoring 11 1st half PTS on a series of hook shots, layups, and what his become his signature shot: a silky-smooth turnaround baseline jumper.

Mac McClung got off to a great start with 8 PTS/3 REB/3 AST before going down in a heap with 3:30 left after getting poked in the right eye by Nelson, who was whistled for a flagrant foul. Somehow the 89% FT shooter was able to step up to the line and knock down 2 FTs, then he sat for the rest of the half while holding a towel to his eye:

In McClung’s absence his backcourt mate Terrell Allen picked up the scoring slack by getting into the lane over and over and making a series of jumpers/layups en route to 10 PTS/5-6 FG before halftime to help his team go on a late 14-0 run to build a 41-32 lead:

As the teams came out of the locker room 10 minutes later to warm up for the 2nd half I noticed no sign of McClung. I asked the Georgetown SID if she had an update and she said he would not be returning to the court in the 2nd half due to an injury. The Hoyas are having a hell of a month but I fear that it will be rough sledding in Big East play during January if the injury is even semi-serious. Nelson was kept in check for most of the final 20 minutes but still converted a pair of layups and played stifling defense to finish with a team-high 17 PTS/3 STL. His 1745 career PTS ranks #5 in school history, and if he can beat up on a couple of Patriot League teams in the month ahead he has a decent chance of becoming the #1 scorer in Eagles history (Russell Bowers has held the top spot for almost 4 decades with 2056).

If you like 3-PT shooting…then this was not the game for you, as both teams combined to shoot 5-32 from behind the arc. Fortunately for the Hoyas, Yurtseven continued making jump shots and Allen had a pair of great defensive plays by making steals that led to layup as the 2 veterans combined for 31 PTS/8 REB/5 AST/2 STL:

The breakout star was FR C Timothy Ighoefe. Playing in only his 3rd career game, he did a little of everything in only 5 minutes of action: a dunk, a REB/putback, a fadeaway jumper, and he even took a charge that received a smile/applause from his coach in an 80-60 win:

I usually do not stump a coach during the postgame press conference but I almost got Coach Brennan. Since he was an assistant coach on the last Georgetown team to win 6 straight in December (a team that just missed out on making the 2012 Sweet 16), I asked him if December success could be used to predict postseason success. He admitted that he was unsure but chuckled that having guys like Otto Porter on your team is the biggest thing:

I inquired of Coach Ewing whether Ighoefe’s garbage-time performance was evidence that he might be starting to figure things out. Ewing agreed and stated that he would need his FR big man during conference play because he would definitely help the team out at some point during this season:

That’s all for now, check back in the weeks ahead for Part 6.

NEWS AND NOTES

-The Louisville-Kentucky rivalry started out like it was going to be a rockfight in favor of Kentucky, but the Cards did rally to tie the game in regulation and narrowly avoided what could have been a buzzer-beater layup by UK as a Maxey layup rimmed out. All it ended up doing was prolonging the agony as the Wildcats took advantage of missed Louisville free throws and ended up winning by 8 in overtime. It ended a 2-game losing streak for Kentucky and now leaves Chris Mack 0-2 against UK in his brief UofL tenure.

-Wisconsin came into yesterday not having won a single game away from home, but they blew Tennessee out of the water and ended up blowing out the Vols from tip to buzzer. This was UT’s first game without Lamonte Turner (out for the season with a shoulder injury) and they suddenly look like a team in disarray with losses in three of their last four games.

-UCLA was not featured in yesterday’s lineup, but they definitely will be featured today after yet another embarrassing home loss against Cal State-Fullerton. The Bruins actually came back from a 14-point deficit in the 2nd half with a 17-0 run, but Fullerton never blinked and came back themselves with a pair of clutch shots in the final minute of the game. They didn’t allow UCLA to get off a final shot, and the end result was Yosemite Sam, err, Mick Cronin throwing the entire team under the bus during his postgame show.

-Belmont hasn’t played as consistently well as they did last season that saw them sneak into the NCAA Tournament as one of the last four teams in the field, but they looked solid yesterday with a 17-point win at Western Kentucky. Barring any major speed bumps or injuries along the way, Belmont will be the clear favorite in the OVC this season.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-WEST VIRGINIA VS OHIO STATE (Game in Cleveland, OH).  This should be a fun neutral court match-up between two top 25 teams, and a great resume building opportunity for both of them.  Ohio State just got a big win against Kentucky, and has the chance to add another one to an already really good resume today.  West Virginia has just one loss on the season, but they don’t have any wins that are anywhere close to as good as this one, so this is a really good opportunity for them as well. (There’s also going to be a lot of Buckeye fans in attendance with the mother of all hangovers after last night for some reason.)

-LIBERTY AT LSU.  Liberty is unbeaten, and if they win this game there is a very good chance they will run the table and enter the NCAA Tournament without a loss.  LSU is a decent team that has the room and ability to improve.  While it’s not a win that completely blows you away, it would still likely end up being the best win on Liberty’s resume at the end of the year if they’re able to pull it off.

-DUQUESNE VS MARSHALL (Game in Cleveland OH).  Duquesne is looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season and pick up a win away from home.

-KANSAS AT STANFORD.  This is a tough road game for the Jayhawks, but if they want a #1 seed then they’re going to have to be good enough to win tough road games.  Stanford is off to a surprising (at least to me) and impressive 11-1 start with some pretty good wins on their resume.  If they were to get this one at home it would ignite even more energy and excitement around this team.

-APPALACHIAN STATE AT NC STATE.  This is a buy game, and the end result should end up looking like a buy game, but Appalachian State is off to a HOT HOT HOT start and looks to be one of the better teams in the Sun Belt, so NC State better not overlook them!

-RHODE ISLAND AT MIDDLE TENNESSEE.  Rhody has a ton of work to do, and they’re still looking for their first road win.  They have potential, but they also have a very small margin for error.

-ARKANSAS AT INDIANA.  Both teams have good records, and Indiana has a few decent wins, but for the most part both teams have bloated their records out against cupcakes, and you get the sense that both could really benefit from a win today.

-TULSA AT KANSAS STATE.  Both teams need to put together a long string of wins if they want to end up on the right side of the bubble.  A win today would be a nice start.

-HARVARD AT CALIFORNIA.  Harvard got off to a disappointing start, but has been playing better and has what looks to be a winnable road game today.

-RICHMOND AT ALABAMA.  Richmond has had a good year so far and looks like they’re good enough to be inside the bubble come Selection Sunday.  A win today would be a huge step in the right direction.  Alabama has had an unimpressive season overall, but they are playing much better now than they were during what was a slow start, and a win today would be another big step in the right direction.

Under The Radar Game of the Day: Sunday, December 29th

Sam Houston State (8-4, 4-4 D1) at Rice (8-4, 6-4 D1) – 3:00 PM EST (CUSA.tv)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to Houston where the Rice Owls will play host to the nearby Sam Houston State Bearkats. The Owls are 4-1 at home this year with their only loss coming against their crosstown rival and one-time SWC rival Houston Cougars. Rice also finished 3rd in the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase with wins against Milwaukee and East Carolina with their only loss being against Liberty. Trey Murphy III averages just over 14 points a game for the Owls.

Sam Houston State has an extremely bloated record with the maximum number of 4 non-D1 games alloted on their schedule, but the Bearkats have won their last three games in a row against D1 competition. Their first win was at home against a Louisiana Tech team fresh off of a win at Mississippi State, and they also won their first two Southland games at home against Northwestern State and New Orleans. SHSU does have four losses on the year (at Mississippi State, at Central Michigan, at San Francisco and at UTRGV), but none of their losses have been by greater than 9 points. Kai Mitchell averages 14.2 points a game and 7.1 rebounds a game for the Bearkats.

Hofstra (9-4, 0-0 CAA) at James Madison (7-4. 7-4 CAA) – 4:00 PM EST (FloHoops)

Today’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to the campus of JMU where the Dukes will host the Hofstra Pride in the Colonial conference opener for both teams. This game will also be a rematch of the CAA Quarterfinals from last year in which Hofstra came out victorious. Hofstra has been all over the place this season – one minute they’re losing at home to San Jose State, another minute they’re winning at UCLA, but they do come into today’s game having won five out of their last six games. Their leading scorer Eli Pemberton (17.1 PPG) was named CAA Player of the Week for his efforts against Manhattan and at Princeton.

While James Madison was picked to finish fourth in the league this year, they did actually garner 3 first-place votes in the coaches/media preseason poll. They brought in a freshman class of six players, one of whom is starting (Michael Christmas – 8.1 PPG/6.7 RPG) and three of whom have played in each game thus far this season. The Dukes recently won at Fordham thanks to a 22-point performance from Matt Lewis.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Saturday, Dec 28th

NEWS AND NOTES

-Houston won this year’s Diamond Head Classic by beating Washington in the championship game and picking up a desperately needed quality win away from home.  Houston’s profile suddenly looks a lot better than it did before Christmas.

-Evansville head coach Walter McCarty has been placed on administrative leave pending a Title IX investigation – assistant head coach Bennie Seltzer will serve as interim head coach in the absence of McCarty.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-WISCONSIN AT TENNESSEE.  Wisconsin has been a rather big disappointment this year.  They’re just 6-5 with no real notable wins on their resume.  Tennessee is a very respectable 8-3 and will remain in good shape if they’re able to hold serve in this one.

-LOUISVILLE AT KENTUCKY.  Louisville is ranked #3 in the country, and they can validate that high ranking today if they’re able to knock off their rivals on the road.  Kentucky has lost two straight, but they’re starting to shoot the ball a little better and they played what was arguably their best game of the season so far in their last game where they lost to Ohio State.  A win in a game like this is what can really turn their season around.  It would certainly turn their mood around.  This is a bitter rivalry, so it means as much off paper as it does on paper.

UMass-Lowell (6-7, 5-7 D1) at Loyola-Maryland (7-4, 6-4 D1) – 7:00 PM EST (WatchStadium.com)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day resumes in Baltimore where the hometown Loyola Greyhounds host the River Hawks of UMass-Lowell. Loyola started the season 3-4 with three losses coming via bracketed and nonbracketed games in the mainland Cayman Islands Classic, but they have since gone on a four-game winning streak that includes home wins against Binghamton (and a non-D1 win) and on the road against Delaware State and Mount St. Mary’s. Andrew Kostecka averages over 21 points a game for Loyola.

The River Hawks started their season with three tough losses in their own River Hawk Invitational with losses against Jacksonville, Merrimack and Dartmouth. They have since rebounded with wins in four of their last six games; their most notable win was on the road at NJIT last week. Christian Lutete averages 19.2 points a game and 8.5 rebounds a game for the River Hawks.
