Tourney Talk: HoopsHD interviews Colgate JR F Will Rayman

Everyone loves Hamilton, both the Broadway play as well as the location of the best team in the Patriot League! On Wednesday Colgate beat Bucknell 94-80 in the Patriot tourney title game to earn an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA tournament. To give you an idea of how long it has been since the Raiders made the NCAA tourney, it was 1996 when Adonal Foyle had 21 PTS/14 REB/6 BLK in a 9-PT loss to UConn. Earlier this week HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to speak with Colgate JR F Will Rayman about winning 13 games in a row and what it feels like to make the tourney for the very 1st time.

You grew up in New York: what made you choose Colgate? Just the relationships I made with the coaches. They recruited me for 2 years and eventually I knew that this was where I wanted to be.

You play for 2-time defending conference COY Matt Langel: what makes him such a good coach, and what is the most important thing that you have learned from him so far? He is really honest and will tell you the truth rather than what you want to hear. He is a players’ coach and is there for us whenever we need him.

In December of 2017 you scored a career-high 34 PTS in 35 minutes in a 10-PT win at Lafayette: was it just 1 of those situations where every shot you put up seemed to go in because you were “in the zone”? I play with a lot of confidence so I feel that every shot I take is going in. Lafayette let me take 11 open threes that night and they are a fast-paced team. I felt like I was on top of the world in my very 1st Patriot League game.

You finished that season by being named conference ROY: how were you able to come in and contribute right from the start? It was hard to get minutes but I am a really competitive kid and kept on working hard until I got a starting spot. We were struggling to score so my role was to be a scorer. Every year is a brand-new team so you just have to find your role. It was not fun losing 22 games that year.

In the 2018 CBI you had 12 PTS/3 STL in a 4-PT loss to San Francisco: what did you learn from that game that will help you this March? Last year we were not playing our game and doing too much 1-on-1 instead. This year we just need to do what we have done during the past 34 games because I have so much confidence in my guys.

In November you scored 13 PTS in a loss at Syracuse: how did your team lose by 21 PTS despite make 12 threes? I think it was due to our turnovers. Syracuse is tough to play against due to their length and it was hard for us to score inside. They scored a lot of fast-break points and really turned up the intensity in the 2nd half, but it will help us when we face a top seed next week.

You began the month of February with a home loss to BU that put your record at 13-10: what has changed since then to allow you to win 13 games in a row (including each of your final 3 by double-digits)? That loss to BU was our 1st home loss all season (which became Colgate’s only home loss all season): they just came at us and we played soft. A few games later against Loyola-Maryland we were down by 17 PTS in the 2nd half and assistant coach Mike Jordan (yet another Penn alum!) said they were calling us soft and dunking in their layup lines. We battled back, won that game by 2 PTS, and gained a lot of confidence which helped us just keep on winning.

In the Patriot tourney title game on Wednesday you scored 18 PTS in a win over Bucknell: what did it mean to you to win a title, and what has the reaction been like since returning to campus? It means everything: we lost to Bucknell on the road last spring by 30 PTS: they were dancing and it was very disrespectful. I went to get a haircut downtown the other day and everyone was waving to me: even my barber knew everything about our team! To win titles in football/soccer/basketball in the same year when you are at a small school is awesome.

In addition to an award-winning coach you have the conference POY (JR PF Rapolas Ivanauskas)/conference tourney MVP (SO PG Jordan Burns)/conference ROY (FR G Tucker Richardson): is the school going to have to build your team a new trophy case to handle all the hardware?! Maybe! It is great to get all of that recognition because Bucknell usually wins all of those awards. JB was not highly recruited and has become 1 of the best PGs in the country, and when he got hurt Tucker came in and led us in AST (which is ridiculous for a freshman!). I am so proud of all of them and it shows that all of their hard work has paid off.

What kind of seed do you think that you deserve, and what kind of seed do you think that you are going to get? It would be awesome to get a 13 seed because that is our lucky # but I just want to go out there with my brothers and win a game. It will be awesome for all of our alumni to see.

Tourney Talk: HoopsHD interviews Bradley SR PF Luuk van Bree

Bitterballen and basketball: that’s what the Netherlands does! On Sunday Bradley beat Northern Iowa 57-54 in the MVC tourney title game to earn an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA tournament. The Braves last made the NCAA tourney in 2006 but earned their way in this year by winning 3 conference tourney games in 3 days by 3 PTS or less. Earlier this week HoopsHD’s Jon Teitel got to speak with SR PF Luuk van Bree about celebrating his birthday last month and what it feels like to make the tourney for the very 1st time.

You grew up in the Netherlands: what made you choose Bradley, and what was the best part of your team’s trip to Amsterdam last summer? They reached out to me while I was playing in Spain at the time. I did not look into it too much: I was just excited to play D-1 basketball. The Amsterdam trip was special: I got to talk to the guys and show them where I was from. Playing in front of my family/friends felt kind of surreal with my 2 worlds coming together: I was really grateful for the opportunity.

You play for Coach Brian Wardle: what makes him such a good coach, and what is the most important thing that you have learned from him so far? He is always ready to go with a lot of energy and is efficient/intense. He has taught me that it is important to have a good work ethic: wake up early, pay attention to details, etc.

You lost 27 games as a freshman: for a guy who has trouble sleeping after a loss, how was your mental/physical health doing in March of 2016? That 1st year was really tough because we had 10 freshmen and were a very young team. I really struggled with it at the time but it has made me grow up a lot faster. Those were dark times but now I am able to stay level-headed. I had people looking out for me and helping me out, which helped me grow both on/off the court.

In January you scored a career-high 21 PTS/3-4 3PM in a win over Illinois State: was it just 1 of those situations where every shot you put up seemed to go in because you were “in the zone”? My team did a great job of finding me and our opponent’s defense was set up to allow me some good looks.

You turned 23 last month: what did you do for the big day? We always bring cupcakes to practice for anyone’s birthday so that was nice, and that night I went out to dinner with my girlfriend.

You won the MVC tourney last weekend via a 3-PT win over Missouri State/2-PT win over Loyola-Chicago/3-PT win over Northern Iowa: how was your team able to win 3 games in 3 days that all came down to the wire? This group has been though a lot of ups and downs and played a lot of close games. We keep rooting for each other and never give up. It showed how competitive and gritty a team we are: we feel that when the game is tied down the stretch that we will end up winning.

SO SF Elijah Childs was named conference tourney MVP: what makes him such a great player? He is very versatile and can score both inside/outside. What makes him special is that he can affect a game in so many ways and plays with a lot of energy. He has improved so much during the past 2 years.

What did it mean to you to win a title, and what has the reaction been like since returning to campus? As a senior it is obviously special and a great sense of accomplishment that we have always been working for. We had a bus escort back to campus and everyone here is very excited.

What is your post-college plan? Go on vacation! I would like to play professionally somewhere/somehow after college.

What kind of seed do you think that you deserve, and what kind of seed do you think that you are going to get? I really do not know but I have seen us listed around a 15 seed: I hope it is as high as possible but at this point it does not really matter. We are having a big watch party on Sunday and it will be fun. No matter what seed we get we are just going to go out and give it our best shot.

The 2019 Hoops HD Selection Committee: Friday, March 15th

Tonight was the second day of the Hoops HD Selection Committee meetings – our main tasks today were to do another scrub of the Under Consideration Board, fill in more at-large spots into the field and also begin building the Master Seed list.

The list of teams Under Consideration were reduced to 19 teams; teams like Georgetown and Xavier were scrubbed off the board after losses in the Big East Tournament. As the night progressed, bids were guaranteed to open up in the Big East, Big 12, SEC and the Big Ten. There were four more teams added to the four carryover teams from last night in terms of at-large voting. After ranking the teams one through eight, the top four vote-getters were Oklahoma, Florida, TCU and Utah State. The four carryover teams (Belmont, Ohio State, St. John’s and Temple are all marked in red on the Under Consideration Board) can still make the at-large field, but there is no guarantee they all ultimately end up making the field.

Tonight’s major task was building the first eight seed lines of the Master Seed List (see the board below on the right hand side). After debate of the teams, each member sent via secret ballot to Chad Sherwood twelve teams in the first round of voting (whereas the NCAA Committee would send eight teams in the first round). The top twelve teams were ranked one through twelve; the top eight vote-getters were added to the #1 and #2 seed lines. For the next round of voting, each member of the Hoops HD Committee  submitted eight more teams to Chad for addition into the Seed List (whereas the NCAA Committee would do four teams). The top eight teams were added to the four carryover teams and were ranked 1-12 by each member via secret ballot. The top eight teams then filled out the #3 and #4 seed lines. The process would be repeated each time until the first eight lines of the Master Seed List were complete. (In short, our committee added two lines at a time; the NCAA Selection Committee would build the list one line at a time.)

Tomorrow night will be the busiest night for our Committee – we will fill in the remaining at-large spots in the field along with any potential contingency teams (especially the Atlantic 10 and American – there is a decent chance that contingency brackets will be needed should either Houston or Cincinnati lose in the American semifinals tomorrow). We will also fill in the remaining eight lines of the Master Seed list along with all teams still alive in their respective conference tournaments in the Ivy League, Sun Belt, Big West, etc. Stay tuned to Hoops HD to see how your favorite team is faring this weekend as we lead up to Selection Sunday!
