NEWS AND NOTES

-For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day between Ohio U and Iona – CLICK HERE

-So for the second night in a row, a UTR (Under the Radar) team went on the road against a ranked team and beat them.  Although it was just a little over 24 hours ago that Winthrop knocked off Saint Mary’s, most people probably aren’t even thinking about that anymore.  Evansville went into Rupp Arena and knocked off #1 ranked Kentucky last night.

Now, I want to make sure this is put into the proper perspective in two different areas.  First, the upset itself.  It’s the first time a UTR (or mid-major if you insist on using a term that I hate) has beaten the #1 ranked team in a true road game since the 1992-1993 season when Long Beach State knocked off Kansas.  So whenever something happens that hasn’t happened in over a quarter of a century, it’s a pretty big deal.  Our good friend Kyle Lamb (@kylamb8) was on the phone with me last night, and he was trying to find the last time a team that was a 24pt underdog had won a game.  He couldn’t.  Now that’s not to say that it’s never happened, but Kyle Lamb is to sports trivia and data what Santa Claus is to Christmas.  He just knows crazy stuff like that, and he could not find the last time that big of an underdog actually won a game.  As an FYI, UMBC was a 20pt underdog to Virginia when they pulled off that upset.  What you saw last night was historic in terms of how big the upset was.

Now, having said that…

From Kentucky’s side of the fence, it’s a kick to the gut.  It’s a bruise to the ego.  It’s kind of embarrassing.  But, that’s really all it is.  I made the comment last night that OOC upsets are like fireworks.  They are these big exciting explosions that everyone sees, but after a few seconds they’re over and there is nothing else to see.  Kentucky is still very good.  They are still (I think) one of the four or five best teams in the country.  I think there is a far better chance that they end up as the overall #1 seed than there is of them not ending up as a protected seed.  The next time they take down a ranked team (which is something they’ve already done) this will fade away.  So as big and as historic as the upset was, it isn’t a damaging or season ending upset for Kentucky.  Not by a long shot.

-Hmmm….did anything else happen last night??

-Oregon got a big win over Memphis, which should shoot them up in the rankings and make us look at them like a potential protected seed caliber team.  James Wiseman continues to play for Memphis, so that saga continues.

-Xavier needed overtime to get past Missouri.  Overtime games are generally exciting, but this was a horrendously played game by both teams.  Still, on paper, it’s a solid win for Xavier.

-Auburn needed a shot in the final seconds to get by South Alabama.  Auburn (well, more specifically Bruce Pearl) sees value in games like this.  And..he’s right!  Say Auburn had lost.  The fireworks theory that I mentioned earlier kicks in.  It’s frustrating, and it’s this big thing that everyone sees, but it’s over so quickly that no one really thinks about it for very long.  They scheduled a four year deal with UAB prior to this, and all those games were battles as well.  While at Tennessee Bruce Pearl scheduled similar types of games against in-state teams.  So this whole idea that Auburn has everything to lose and nothing to gain is kind of false.  They really don’t have THAT much to lose, even if they lose.  And…it was a much better game than a buy game!

-In the Gavitt Games Michigan got a decent win at home against Creighton to remain unbeaten.  Butler also got a nice home win against Minnesota.  I wasn’t expecting much out of Butler this year, especially with all their injuries, but I’ve been impressed so far.

-It was about 1:30am by the time Oklahoma finished picking up what I think is a really big win against Oregon State in the second half of the Phil Knight Invitational.  I know no one is all that excited about Oregon State, but I think they’re going to be better than what most people realize and could end up sneaking into the NCAA Tournament.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-LSU AT VCU.  Will Wade returns to VCU!!  This should be a fun one between two likely tournament teams who are looking to add a good win to their resume early in the season.

-VILLANOVA AT OHIO STATE (Gavitt Tipoff Games).  Both teams are ranked.  Both could end up as protected seeds.  This is a good opportunity for both teams to pick up a pretty big OOC win.  It should be a fun one.  Ohio State was somewhat tested against Cincinnati, but this is the first real test of the season for Nova.

-LA SALLE AT PENN (Big Five).  Penn followed up their big win at Alabama with a 19 point loss to Rice.  I guess they celebrated a little too much??  They are the defending Big Five champs, and they begin that defense tonight against La Salle, who’s looking to pick up what would be a nice road win in a rivalry game.

-BOSTON U AT VERMONT.  The Catamounts are one of the best UTR teams out there and they’re looking to remain unbeaten.

-SAINT JOSEPH’S AT UCONN.  We weren’t expecting much out of Saint Joe’s this year, and we still thought UConn was about a year away, but both have looked at least decent early on and have the chance to pick up a nice win tonight.  I think it would help the winning team’s mental health and momentum more than it would help them on paper, but either way it’s a good early season game.

-TEXAS TECH VS HOUSTON BAPTIST (Midland TX).  Kind of an odd neutral site game, but I guess it could best be summed up by saying that it’s a very winnable game away from home for Texas Tech.

-EASTERN WASHINGTON AT SAINT LOUIS.  Both teams are unbeaten, and Eastern Washington is a favorite in the Big Sky.

-OKLAHOMA STATE AT CHARLESTON.  Both teams come into this game at 2-0, and it’s a fairly decent road test for Oklahoma State.  Charleston has been one of the better teams in the Colonial for the past several years, and appears to be a contender again this year.  This is a showcase home game for them against a P5 school, so it should be fun.

-SOUTHERN UTAH AT BYU.  It’s a buy game, but we’ll highlight it.  It’s an in-state match up between a very much improved Southern Utah team and a BYU team that’s looking to bounce back from their recent loss to San Diego State.

-PURDUE AT MARQUETTE (Gavitt Tipoff Games).  Purdue suffered a loss to Texas over the weekend and is looking to bounce back.  A win on the road would certainly qualify as a bounce back.  Marquette is facing their first real test tonight, so we should learn something about them as well.

-PROVIDENCE AT NORTHWESTERN (Gavitt Tipoff Games).  I thought about not even highlighting this one.  It’s a likely road win for a Providence team that’s a lot better than Merrimack, who beat Northwestern last Friday.

-GRAND CANYON AT SAN DIEGO STATE.  GCU has been somewhat disappointing this year.  San Diego State has been the complete opposite of disappointing.  They’re coming off a very nice win against BYU and should be able to stay unbeaten tonight.

BUY GAMES

-McNeese @ Wisconsin
-High Point @ Boston College
-Colgate @ Syracuse
-SC Upstate @ Virginia Tech
-Indiana State @ Louisville
-Monmouth @ Kansas State – Monmouth is a contender in the MAAC, but likely overmatched tonight
-Drexel @ Rutgers – Rutgers can get to 3-0
-Cal State Bakersfield @ Northern Iowa
-FIU @ NC State
-Green Bay @ New Mexico – New Mexico can get to 3-0

Under The Radar – Wednesday, November 13

Ohio (2-0, 1-0 D1) at Iona (0-1) – 7:00 PM EST (ESPN+)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day takes us to the burbs of New York City – the Iona Gaels will play host to the Ohio Bobcats. OU has already made one trip to the Empire State earlier this season and came up victorious with a 12-point win at St. Bonaventure in their season opener. Ben Vander Plas has averaged 15 points and 5 rebounds a game thus far for the Bobcats.

Iona is coming off of a tough 70-64 overtime loss at La Salle last Saturday at Tom Gola Arena – the Explorers did jump out to an 18-point lead at halftime before Iona mounted a 2nd half comeback that included a game-tying three-point shot with under 10 seconds to play in regulation. Tajuan Agee led Iona with 21 points and 9 rebounds in that game; they are also expected to have head coach Tim Cluess back on the bench after missing Saturday’s game due to illness.

NEWS AND NOTES

CLICK HERE for our latest Hoops HD Report where we discuss James Wiseman, recap the big action from last week, and preview a busy week this week

For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day, which highlights New Mexico State vs UTEP- CLICK HERE

-We had two surprises yesterday.  The biggest one was probably Winthrop’s 61-59 win at Saint Mary’s.  It’s always going to make people sit up and take notice when a UTR team takes down a ranked team, but one of the things that made this one a little shocking was that we didn’t even think Winthrop was a Big South frontrunner.  You can point to Saint Mary’s and talk about the things they didn’t do, but in truth this Winthrop team really played well.  In Winthrop’s previous game they nearly beat Fresno State, so while part of the story is that SMC may be ranked a little too high, the other part of the story is that Winthrop is potentially really good.

-The other surprise was DePaul’s win at Iowa.  If DePaul had simply won at Iowa it would have been a little unexpected, but DePaul went into Iowa and totally boat-raced them.  At no point was Iowa not getting blown out.  DePaul, who has been really bad for the past decade and a half, is off to a 4-0 start with a blowout road win at Iowa.  I think it’s time to start paying attention to the Blue Demons.  At least for right now.

-Dartmouth, who had a nice win at Buffalo this past Friday, picked up another win and remains unbeaten.  So much for me thinking they were the worst team in the Ivy!

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-PITTSBURGH AT ROBERT MORRIS.  A short road trip across town for Pitt as they look to bounce back after a somewhat surprising loss to Nicholls and pick up their first road win of the season.  Pitt does not play Duquesne this year, so this is the closest thing to the City Game that we are going to get.

-CREIGHTON AT MICHIGAN (Gavitt Tipoff Games).  Both teams come in after beating up on a creampuff and face their first test of the season tonight.  Both could use an early season quality win, and this is a resume building opportunity.

-MISSOURI AT XAVIER.  Both of these teams have won a pair of buy games and face their first real test of the season tonight.  Both teams missed The Dance last year and are hoping to have better seasons this year.  This is an early season resume building game for whoever ends up winning it.

-DAVIDSON AT CHARLOTTE.  Both teams are seeking their first win of the season in this crosstown OOC rivalry.  Davidson lost their opener to Auburn, but we still think they are a potential NCAA Tournament caliber team.

-NORTHEASTERN AT UMASS.  Northeastern is out to an impressive 2-0 start, and one of those wins came against a pretty good Harvard team.  If they can get this one and improve to 3-0, and 2-0 in true road games then you kind of have to keep paying attention to them.

-AUBURN AT SOUTH ALABAMA.  To their credit, Auburn likes to play the in-state teams on equal terms.  And why not?  These are winnable road games.  Tonight they go on the road to South Alabama who is unbeaten on the season so far.

-MINNESOTA AT BUTLER (Gavitt Tipoff Games).  Minnesota is coming off a somewhat surprising loss, so there is probably a slight sense of urgency to this game.  Picking up a road win would be a great way to bounce back.  Butler has blasted through two buy games, but this is their first real test.

-OREGON VS MEMPHIS (Phil Knight Invitational, Portland OR).  While it’s technically a neutral site game, it will be a pro-Oregon crowd.  This game is intriguing for several reasons.  It’s two ranked teams who should compete for protected seeds, and this would be a huge win on the resume going toward that.  It’s also the next chapter in the ongoing James Wiseman saga, who the NCAA says is likely ineligible, but who Memphis keeps playing anyway.

-OKLAHOMA VS OREGON STATE (Phil Knight Invitational, Portland OR).  Both teams come into this game at 2-0, and both have actually managed at least a decent win so far.  They’re also two teams that we have talked about as potential dark horses, so it’s going to be kind of fun watching them go at it tonight.

-MIAMI FL AT UCF.  Neither team is expected to do much this season, but both are off to semi-good starts and can at least get a little bit of early season momentum built up with a win tonight.

-NEW MEXICO STATE AT UTEP – UTR Game of the Day

-NORTH TEXAS AT ARKANSAS.  It’s a buy game, but both teams are unbeaten and since we think North Texas can make some noise in CUSA, then why not highlight it?

-WILLIAM & MARY AT WOFFORD.  Both teams 2-0

-FURMAN AT CHARLESTON SOUTHERN.  Furman is trying to get to 3-0 and pick up their second true road win.  Again, this is a team that we think can land inside the bubble.

-TEXAS ARLINGTON AT NEVADA.  I wasn’t really big on UTA this year, but if they get this win on the road and improve to 3-0 I will have to sit up and take notice.

-SOUTH DAKOTA STATE AT USC.  It’s a buy game, but both teams are unbeaten so it is a compelling enough buy game to highlight.

-FRESNO STATE AT SAN DIEGO.  Fresno State is looking to improve to 2-1 and pick up their first true road win.

-UNLV AT CALIFORNIA.  I don’t expect either team to be all that good, but we will follow both of them until they give us a reason not to.

BUY GAMES

-Evansville @ Kentucky
-Central Arkansas @ Duke
-North Alabama @ Indiana
-Howard @ Notre Dame – this is actually a home and home, but it’s practically a buy game
-New Hampshire @ Saint John’s – both teams 2-0
-The Citadel @ Georgia
-Lamar @ Duquesne – both teams unbeaten
-SC State @ Liberty
-Norfolk State @ Ole Miss
-Cal Baptist @ Texas
-Northern Illinois @ Iowa State
-Alabama State @ Houston
-New Orleans @ SMU – The Southland favorite against a currently unbeaten SMU team
-Louisiana @ TCU – both teams unbeaten
-North Dakota @ Gonzaga – both teams unbeaten
-Denver @ Utah State
-Mount Saint Mary’s @ Washington
-Murray State @ Tennessee – both teams unbeaten.  It’s a buy game, but an intriguing one
-Long Beach State @ Samford

For the Puppet’s initial Bracketology strictly based on current merit – CLICK HERE

New Mexico State (1-0, 0-0 D1) at UTEP (1-0, 0-0 D1) – 9:00 PM EST (CUSA.tv)

Tonight’s UTR Game of the Day is the first leg of the Battle for I-10 between New Mexico State and UTEP. Both teams have opened their respective seasons with non-D1 wins and will be making their respective D-1 debuts tonight. UTEP also had a victory agaisnt Texas Tech in a charity exhibition before opening their season with a win against New Mexico Highlands. Bryson Williams and Darryl Edwards both had 17 points in the Miners’ win last Tuesday.

New Mexico State is coming off of yet another season as the WAC champion – they missed a golden opportunity in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Auburn before losing in the closing seconds against the eventual Final Four-bound Tigers. The Aggies are again expected to win their league and began the year with a 92-46 victory against Western New Mexico. Jabari Rice led the Aggies with 21 points; William McNair also had 11 points and 7 rebounds in a game that saw 5 Aggies end up in double figures for points.

The Hoops HD Report: November 11th

Chad and the panel begin by discussing James Wiseman’s eligibility, and how Memphis opted to go ahead and play him despite being told by the NCAA that he was likely ineligible.  We discuss what we know about what’s happened so far, and what some of the potential consequences for Memphis could be once the NCAA comes down on them.

After that, we run through the ten multi-bid conferences and review the first week of college basketball.  Washington got a big win against Baylor, and the entire Pac 12 conference is off to a solid start.  The Big Ten, on the other hand, has had several surprising losses.  Pitt followed up their big win against Florida State with a loss to Nicholls, whereas FSU went on the road and took down Florida in one of the bigger road wins of the young season.  The Gavitt Tip-Off Games are under way, and DePaul picked up an impressive and decisive win at Iowa.  We look at that, and all of the other action coming up this week.

All that, and more!!

And for all you radio lovers, below is an audio only version of the show…

Puppet’s Merit Rankings/Bracket Projections: November 11th

For John Stalica’s UTR Game of the Day – CLICK HERE

Okay, it is VERY important you read this before scrolling down because I want to make sure everyone knows what they’re looking at.

These are strictly MERIT RANKINGS.  This is NOT an attempt to rank how good I think teams actually are, or how good they will be on Selection Sunday.  If a top 5 team has done nothing so far other than play and win a couple of buy games, they’ll be ranked behind a UTR team that went out and won a road game even if I think the top 5 team would absolutely dump truck the UTR team that I have ranked ahead of them.

Because of that, you get what amounts to insane looking rankings, and therefore an insane looking bracket.  I know it’s insane.  In fact, that’s actually part of what makes doing one this early kind of fun.  So, if you’re looking at it and you think “WTF is this??” what I mentioned above is what it is.

I do this for two reasons.  1) it gets me in the habit of evaluating teams the way a committee member would as early as possible, and 2) I like doing it this way.  I know it’s impractical, but it’s still fun.

I do not think you’ll see Villanova and Memphis as #15 seeds in March.

I do not think Michigan State will end up being just outside the bubble.

I do not think you will see teams like Vermont, Nicholls, Northeaster, South Dakota, and Dartmouth in the top half of the bracket in March.

This is strictly CURRENT MERIT, and it’s more about the exercise of evaluating teams than it is ranking them.  At this point, ranking teams based on merit isn’t just like splitting hairs, it’s like splitting BALD hairs.
